Abstract

This paper is a companion to the book, "Smoking, Drinking, and Drug Use in Young Adulthood: The Impacts of New Freedoms and New Responsibilities," by Bachman, Wadsworth, O'Malley, Johnston, and Schulenberg (1997). The book attempts to disentangle the effects of post-high school roles on drug use by conducting a variety of analyses on data from the Monitoring the Future project. The purpose of this paper is to provide supplemental material to the book, including the full set of regression results upon which the book was written. This paper is not meant to stand alone, nor does it need to be read cover to cover; for the most part it is simply a vehicle for making accessible the data and results of analyses that did not readily fit into the book but may be useful for understanding the findings. It provides the reader with: (1) supplemental material on sample characteristics; (2) descriptive statistics of patterns of change in drug use; (3) a complete set of regression results relating post-high school roles to changes in drug use; (4) a discussion of background factors and their relationship to changes in drug use; and (5) data tables for figures which appear in Bachman et al. (1997). The body of this paper is divided into chapter corresponding to items 1 through 4. The last item includes a set of tables. (Contain 10 references and 67 tables.) (Author/JDM)

Abstract

This occasional paper is intended to disseminate information from the project, Monitoring the Future. Each year since 1975, about 17,000 seniors have participated in the survey, which is conducted in some 130 high schools nationwide. In addition, subsamples of seniors from previously participating classes receive follow-up questionnaires by mail each year. Information from the follow-up studies is examined in this monograph. The information concerns changes in drug use during the first 10 years after high school, and specifically focuses on the ways in which social roles and experiences in post-high school years relate to the use of cigarettes, alcohol, marijuana, and cocaine. Chapter one is an introduction, and chapter two provides a description of the sample in terms of roles and experiences of each group at intervals post- high school. Chapters three, four, five, and six are devoted to types of drug use. Chapter seven summarizes the impacts of post-high school roles and experiences on drug use. Some general conclusions from the analyses include: (1) among full-time college students there is a larger than average increase in alcohol use; (2) being married is associated with reduction in use of alcohol; and (3) military service is associated with increased use of cigarettes and alcohol. Abstract

Survey Research Center, University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. Objective. This study investigates cohort differences in cognitive functioning among Americans aged 70 or older in 1993, 1995, 1998, and 2000. Methods. The study draws on self-respondent data from four waves of the Asset and Health Dynamics Among the Oldest Old Study and the Health and Retirement Study surveys collected between 1993 and 2000. Cognitive performance scores for each of four components (immediate recall, delayed recall, serial 7s, and mental status) and their sum are compared across cohorts, unadjusted and with adjustments for survey design features and demographic characteristics. Results. Unadjusted scores suggest cohort improvements in several components of cognitive functioning between 1993 and 1998, and little change between 1998 and 2000. However, these improvements largely disappear after confounding features of the survey design (changes in age distribution of the sample across waves and prior exposure to the cognitive tests) and changes in the demographic composition of the sample (race, ethnicity, and gender) are adjusted for. Discussion. There appears to have been little improvement of cognitive functioning across recent cohorts of older Americans. However, the study points out the complexities of using panel data to study cohort differences, particularly when the measures of interest are likely influenced by prior wave participation. Future studies based on other data sources are needed.

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to identify maternal, child, and family factors related to the employment status and employment history of single mothers of low-birth-weight (LBW) and full-term preschoolers. A sample of 121 female-headed, single-parent families with 3-, 4-, and 5-year-old LBW and full-term children was recruited through admission records to three Level III neonatal intensive care units (NICUs) and birth records of two normal newborn nurseries. Results show that the birth of an LBW infant was not related to employment status, number of hours employed per week, or employment history for single mothers. Employed mothers had significantly more education and more positive attitudes toward employment. Controlling for other factors, never being married, and having more children, more federal income, and less positive employment attitudes were predictive of nonemployment. Both employed and nonemployed women expressed preference for employment.

42. Comparison of Alternative Approaches to Causal Analysis with Panel Data.

Abstract

This paper explores various procedures of panel data in the estimation of causal models. The reported analyses are from the Monitoring the Future study, a nationwide questionnaire survey of 16,000 to 17,000 high school seniors conducted annually since 1975. First, the parameters of causal models are estimated in which the dependent variables are two reports on the overall quality of life. The exercise is then repeated using two measures of drug abuse as the dependent variables. Multiple regression analyses were performed and results are presented briefly in tabular form. Change scores offered a clear advantage over the use of static scores by reducing the potential for misspecified models. In general, the standard errors of estimates based on change scores are greater than those based on static scores. However, present results indicate that for reasonably large sample sizes, and for a wide range of stabilities of the true values and measurement errors in the predictor variables, the ratio of sampling errors for estimates based on change scores to those based on static scores is not excessively large. Panel data as estimates of dynamic causal models are also discussed. (PN)

43. The Structure of Subjective Well-Being in Different Age Groups.

Abstract

Interrelationships between measures of satisfaction and a variety of life domains were used to test the similarity of the underlying factor structure of subjective well-being across age levels. Findings indicated that for respondents of age levels between 25 and 75, the nature of the underlying factors are similar. (Author)
