2. How to evaluate the calibration of a disease risk prediction tool

Abstract

To evaluate the calibration of a disease risk prediction tool, the quantity $E/O$, i.e., the ratio of the expected number of events to the observed number of events, is generally computed. However, because of censoring, or more precisely because of individuals who drop out before the termination of the study, this quantity is generally unavailable for the complete population study and an alternative estimate has to be computed. In this paper, we present and compare four methods to do this. We show that two of the most commonly used methods generally lead to biased estimates. Our arguments are first based on some theoretic considerations. Then, we perform a simulation study to highlight the magnitude of the previously mentioned biases. Abstract

We calculate directly the rates of emission of energy and linear momentum by a point charge in arbitrary motion using mathematical results that render the calculation of solid-angle integrals very simple. We show that the results of these explicit calculations agree with those based on covariance, illustrating how deeply special relativity is rooted in classical electrodynamics. Then, we use these covariance arguments to calculate the emission of angular momentum, which is a new result. We also indicate how this calculation can be done in the direct, but much longer, way.

Abstract

Typhlodromus longilaterus is a generalist phytoseiid mite described by Athias-Henriot in 1957 and commonly found in Israel on spontaneous herbaceous plants. As very little is known about this species, the present study reports preliminary results on the predation capacity of phytoseiid females on eggs and juveniles of two tetranychid mites very common in the Mediterranean area, Tetranychus urticae and Panonychus citri. After 24 hours the phytoseiid females preyed on 15% of offered eggs of both tetranychids, while the prey ratio was higher on T. urticae eggs after this period (33.4% and 33.5% vs 20.8% and 16.2% after 2 and 3 days for T. urticae and P. citri respectively). The phytoseiid showed its preference also for nymphs of T. urticae preying on 44-50% of nymphs offered, while the predation range was lower on nymphs of P. citri (from 30.3 to 36.3%).

Abstract

The aim of this study was to evaluate the antioxidant and anti-acetylcholinesterase properties and phytochemical constituents of the latex from Euphorbia dendroides L. (Euphorbiaceae) growing wild in Sicily. Phytochemical analysis revealed that into E. dendroides latex the triterpenoids were the most abundant among the identified compounds. Furthermore, a high content of polyphenols mainly as phenolic acids, was found. The antioxidant and free-radical scavenging properties, by several in vitro assays such as DPPH, TEAC and FRAP, have been evaluated. The results showed that E. dendroides latex has significant antioxidant activity, as measured by DPPH assay (2927.01 ± 98.03 µmols of Trolox equivalent (TE)/100g FW). Reactivity towards ABTS radical cation and ferric-reducing antioxidant power (FRAP) values were 7580.95 ± 97.65 µmols of TE/100g FW and 4383.13 ± 95.30 μmol of TE/100g FW, respectively. The latex exhibited also significant inhibition of acetylcholinesterase activity with an IC50 value of 4.46 µg/mL (C.L. = 2.002–9.947). Furthermore, Brine shrimp (Artemia salina) cytotoxicity bioassay showed that the larvae viability was significantly affected at higher concentrations than those capable to induce significant antioxidant and anti-acetylcholinesterase effects (LD50 25 µg/mL). The results suggest that polyphenols and terpenoids can contribute significantly to antioxidant and anti-acetylcholinesterase activities of E. dendroides latex. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Laboratory trials were carried out to verify the predatory capacity of two generic phytoseiid predators upon eggs of the two most important tetranychids damaging Citrus orchards in Sicily: Tetranychus urticae and Panonychus citri. Both Typhlodromus laurentii and Typhlodromus rhenanoides are autochthonous and common species on spontaneous and cultivated plants. The research aimed at investigating the predatory behaviour of the phytoseiids upon the prey stage considered more vulnerable. The predation rate of the two phytoseiids was different on the two prey eggs, both on each observation day and for the whole observation period. Both phytoseiids clearly preferred T. urticae eggs, on which the predation rate was significantly higher for T. laurentii (12.5±0.28 preyed eggs/female/day), than for T. rhenanoides (9.7±0.21 preyed eggs/female/day). On the contrary, the predation upon P. citri eggs was very scarse, without significant differences for both phytoseiids: 0.5±0.09 and 0.2±0.04 eggs/female/day for T. laurentii and T. rhenanoides respectively. The predatory activity, naturally, influenced the oviposition rate of the two phytoseiids. T. laurentii was the most prolific species with 2.1±0.08 eggs/female/day, when eggs of T. urticae were supplied as food, while upon P. citri eggs only 0.3±0.05 eggs/female/day was layed by the predator. The oviposition rate of T. rhenanoides on T. urticae eggs (1.3±0.06 eggs/female/day) was significantly lower, if compared to that of T. laurentii. However, no significant differences were found when the phytoseiid preyed upon P. citri eggs.

Abstract

Aim. The importance of vaginal pH and vaginal flora in maintaining a well-balanced vaginal ecosystem is well known and has been widely described. However, no systematic nationwide studies have been carried out concerning the correlation between vaginal pH, life style and different physiopathological conditions in women of different ages. Methods. SOPHY (Study on pH and Hygiene) collected data concerning the lifestyle, vaginal pH, and the presence of symptoms, stratified into different subgroups (prepuberal, fertile, pregnancy, postpartum, premenopause and menopause) in a representative sample of the Italian gynecological population (264 gynaecologists for a total of 2 641 women) with the aid of a specific Internet site for data entry. Results. A more acid vaginal pH was related to a better satisfactory sexual activity and to more healthy genital condition. A positive relationship was detected between education level and good perception of sexuality. Certain clothing habits and a higher frequency of candidiasis and bacterial vaginosis was shown. Conclusion. SOPHY revealed some interesting correlations between clothing and the frequency of candidiasis and bacterial vaginosis, between vaginal pH and satisfactory sexual activity, and between education and sexuality. SOPHY had a considerable educational impact, leading the physicians and women to consider vaginal pH as an important aspect of everyday life.
