We present a detailed review on the mechanistic understanding and catalyst development of CeO2-based CO2 methanation catalysts. Current challenges for deeper investigations and future perspectives are presented as well.

Electroacupuncture (EA) is an efficient treatment for visceral hypersensitivity (VH). However, the mechanism underlying VH remains obscure. This study aimed to examine the effect of EA at Housanli acupoint on PAR2 and PAR4 expression in the periaqueductal gray (PAG), rostral ventromedial medulla (RVM), and spinal cord dorsal horn (SCDH) axes, as well as on expression of the proinflammatory cytokines IL-1β and TNF-α, COX-2 enzyme, c-Fos, and the neuropeptides CGRP and SP in the same areas of the descending pain modulatory system. To induce VH in male goats, a 2,4,6-trinitrobenzene-sulfonic acid (TNBS)–ethanol solution was administered to the ileal wall. The visceromotor response (VMR) and nociceptive response at different colorectal distension pressures were measured to evaluate VH. Goats in the TNBS group displayed significantly increased VMR and nociceptive response scores, and elevated protein and mRNA levels of PAR2 and PAR4 in the descending pain modulatory system compared to those in the control group. EA alleviated VMR and nociceptive responses, decreased the protein and mRNA expression levels of PAR2, and elevated those of PAR4 in the descending pain modulatory system. EA may relieve VH by reducing PAR2 expression and increasing PAR4 expression in the descending pain modulatory system.

The development of superior low-temperature catalytic performance and inexpensive catalysts for the removal of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) is crucial for their industrial application. Herein, CuO/Ce0.6Zr0.4O2 catalysts calcinated at different temperatures (Cu/CZ-X, X represented calcination temperature) were prepared and used to eliminate toluene. It can be found that Cu/CZ-550 presented the highest low-temperature catalytic activity, with the lowest temperature (220 °C) 50% conversion of toluene, the highest normalized reaction rate (3.1 × 10−5 mol·g−1·s−1 at 180 °C) and the lowest apparent activation energy value (86.3 ± 4.7 kJ·mol−1). Systematically, the surface properties analysis results showed that the optimum redox property, abundant oxygen vacancies, and plentiful surface Ce3+ species over Cu/CZ-550 were associated with the strong interaction between Cu and support could significantly favor the adsorption and activation of toluene, thus resulting in its superior catalytic performance.

A series of LaCoO3 perovskite catalysts substituted by Sr in the A site (La1−xSrxCoO3) were prepared via a facile sol–gel method.

CuO–CeO2 (Cu–Ce) catalyst with a CuO/CeO2 mass ratio of 1 prepared by a sol–gel method is used in the CO catalytic oxidation reaction in the actual industrial sulfur-containing atmosphere. At a reaction temperature of 200 °C, the catalyst exhibits quite different stability under sulfur-containing and sulfur-free conditions. When 30 ppm SO2 was added to the feed gas, the Cu–Ce catalyst had an initial CO conversion rate of 100%, gradually decreasing after 26 h, and this catalyst completely deactivated at about 50 h. However, the CO conversion rate of the catalyst under sulfur-free conditions could be nearly maintained at 100% within the measured time range (60 h). The results of IR, Raman, and XPS characterizations proved that the accumulation of cerium sulfate on the Cu–Ce catalyst would cover the active sites of the catalyst, eventually leading to the complete deactivation of the catalyst, which provides favorable evidence for the actual industrial anti-sulfur application.

The Fe-Ti-Ox catalysts with the different Fe contents were used for the catalytic hydrolysis of hydrogen cyanide (HCN) in the presence of H2O, which investigated the roles of Fe chemical valence and oxygen species in HCN removal and the production (NH3 and CO). The results implied that more amounts of Fe3+ species over Fe-Ti-Ox could increase the catalytic hydrolysis activity of HCN while Fe2+ species contributed to the formation of NH3 at high temperatures. Furthermore, the abundance of surface oxygen species was in favour of the catalytic performance of HCN.

A broadband photonic-assisted microwave receiver with high cross-channel interference suppression and image rejection is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. At the input of the microwave receiver, a microwave signal is injected into an optoelectronic oscillator (OEO), which functions as a local oscillator (LO) to generate a low-phase noise LO signal as well as a photonic-assisted mixer to down-convert the input microwave signal to the intermediate frequency (IF). A microwave photonic filter (MPF), realized by the joint operation of a phase modulator (PM) in the OEO and a Fabry-Perot laser diode (FPLD), is used as a narrowband filter to select the IF signal. Thanks to the wide bandwidth of the photonic-assisted mixer and the wide frequency tunable range of the OEO, the microwave receiver can support broadband operation. The high cross-channel interference suppression and image rejection are enabled by the narrowband MPF. The system is evaluated experimentally. A broadband operation from 11.27 to 20.85 GHz is demonstrated. For a multi-channel microwave signal with a channel spacing of 2 GHz, a cross-channel interference suppression ratio of 21.95 dB and an image rejection ratio of 21.51 dB are realized. The spurious-free dynamic range (SFDR) of the receiver is also measured to be 98.25 dB·Hz2/3. The performance of the microwave receiver for multi-channel communications is also experimentally evaluated.

Unlike the scenario in traditional high-order QAM signals, Viterbi and Viterbi (V&V) algorithm becomes more powerful for carrier phase recovery (CPR) in probabilistically shaped (PS) signals. The reason relies on that the PS signals assign much higher probability to the innermost 4 constellation points, which are qualified for V&V algorithm. In this article, we compare the performance of V&V algorithm to that of blind phase search (BPS) algorithm for PS-64 QAM and PS-256 QAM in the aspects of window size and signal to noise ratio under the constraint of different laser linewidths. Besides, the impact of signal entropy on both algorithms is investigated. The computational complexity and running time for both algorithms are also summarized. Results show that the two algorithms perform similarly for PS-64 QAM signals when the linewidth is less than 1 MHz while the running time of BPS algorithm is at least 45 times longer than that of V&V algorithm. Finally, we conduct a coherent detection based optical back-to-back experiment where the laser linewidths of both transmitter laser and local oscillator are 100 kHz. For PS-64 QAM, both V&V and BPS algorithms show negligible penalty compared to the performance of homodyne detection, verifying the feasibility of applying V&V algorithm in the CPR of PS-64 QAM.

We demonstrate an effective wavelength multicast scheme to generate 16 new channels with low penalty and high spectral efficiency using a single optical pump. The scheme capitalizes on cross-phase modulation of an input signal by a rate-multiplied pump pulse train to generate multiple wavelength channels. The pulse rate is multiplied in an energy-efficient way via the temporal Talbot effect. In the experiment, we have successfully achieved more than 20 multicast copies of a 40-Gb/s QPSK OFDM single-sideband signal. The copied channels are spaced by 50 GHz which is determined by five times multiplication on the repetition rate of a 10-GHz input pump pulse train. The BER performances of the central 16 channels are evaluated, showing less than 1.3-dB OSNR difference among the channels. Compared to the original single-sideband signal, the central channel experiences only a 0.1-dB OSNR penalty in our approach. The result verifies the effectiveness of our scheme in realizing spectrally efficient and high-channel-count wavelength multicast by using a single pump generated with relatively low-speed electronic resources.

Metformin, the first-line oral antidiabetic medicine, has shown great antineoplastic potential in various cancer types, despite an unclear mechanism. This study aimed to elucidate the possible mechanism of metformin as a chemotherapy agent with less reproductive and genetic toxicity in human endometrial cancer. The type I endometrial carcinoma cell lines Ishikawa and RL95-2 were treated with metformin. Cell functions, such as proliferation, migration, and invasion, were analyzed. Flow cytometry was performed for cell cycle and apoptosis analyses. Simultaneously, RT-qPCR and western blotting were performed to explore the possible mechanism. Moreover, YAP1 knockout Ishikawa cells were established via lentivirus to demonstrate the underlying mechanism. The results showed that metformin mediated Ishikawa and RL95-2 cell growth inhibition in a dose- and time-dependent manner. The IC50 values of metformin in Ishikawa and RL95-2 cells were 10 mM and 8 mM, respectively. The migration and invasion abilities were also inhibited in the metformin-treated group using wound healing assays and transwell migration and invasion assays, and Ishikawa and RL95-2 cells were arrested in the G1 or G2 phase, respectively. Moreover, the cell proportions of cells in both early and late apoptosis stages were dramatically elevated when treated with metformin, as was the ratio of Bax/Bcl-2 expression. Additionally, the expression levels of YAP1 mRNA and protein in the treatment group were much lower than those in the control group. The cellular behaviors of YAP1 knockout Ishikawa cells were similar to those in the metformin-treated group. Our results demonstrated that it is an attractive alternative to cytotoxic chemotherapy in human endometrial cancer, and YAP of the Hippo pathway may be a potential molecular target. This study provides novel ideas for the adjuvant therapy of endometrial cancer patients, especially for women with strong fertility desires and demands.

In this letter, we investigate the performances of different learning rate decay schedules in least mean square (LMS) based equalization. The required iteration numbers for convergence are 275, 150 and 150 for time-based, staircase and exponential decay schedules respectively, which are much less than 1000, the required iteration number for constant learning rate schedule in processing our experimental data. Meanwhile, the corresponding training times are reduced to shorter than one third, one fifth and one fourth of that in constant schedule. The system performances in the aspects of carrier to signal power ratio and optical signal to noise ratio are measured in a 110 Gbit/s probabilistically shaped 64 QAM direct detection system to evaluate different learning rate decay schedules.

The improved Ni/SBA-15 catalysts were prepared by thermal inducing method and applied to dry reforming of methane. The promoting effect exerted by thermal activated reconstruction was studied systematically by means of various characterization techniques. TEM results indicated that the thermal inducing process led to the reconstruction of Ni particles to form ultra-fine Ni nanoparticles (2–3 nm) uniformly distributed on SBA-15. The resulting Ni nanoparticles not only improved catalytic activity but also inhibited the formation of carbon deposition during the DRM reaction. The thermal treatment catalyst with tiny particles presented the superior catalytic performance in the DRM reaction, where H2/CO ratio was close to 1 and no deactivation was discovered after continuous reaction at 750 °C for 50 h. Additionally, it was found that the metal-support interaction was strengthened observably after the thermal activated reconstruction. The strong interaction anchored Ni particles to prevent their high temperature sintering, thus forming stable catalytic centers. Therefore, the conversions of both CO2 and CH4 almost stabilized at 90% and 85%, respectively, for the thermal activated reconstruction samples during the long-term catalytic test.

Catalytic desulfurization is favored for its ability to desulfurize low concentrations of SO2 by generating sulfur without the need for flue gas conditioning or additives. Maintaining reaction efficiency at a low temperature would justify the industrial scale use of this method. To that end, in this study, we modified a previously reported highly efficient CuO-ZrSnO4 catalyst and investigated its desulfurization performance. The non-thermal plasma (NTP) method was used to enhance the low-temperature efficiency of the catalyst. The desulfurization rate was significantly improved without generating excess heat or by-products in the low-output mode of post-plasma-catalysis-type (PPC-type) dielectric barrier discharge (DBD). In addition, we studied the physicochemical properties of the catalyst (pore structure, physical structure, morphology, electronic properties, and chemical state) under plasma enhancement conditions. The catalyst loaded with 20 wt% Cu and aged at 40 °C exhibited optimum desulfurization performance. This study provides a theoretical foundation for the analysis of plasma-enhanced catalytic desulfurization under low-temperature conditions.

We demonstrate a 355 nm ultraviolet nanosecond laser produced by the type I phase-matched frequency doubling in a K3B6O10Br (KBOB) nonlinear optical crystal. The use of 5022 μJ, 710 nm pump pulses at 10 Hz repetition rate produces 4.273 ns, 355 nm, 717 μJ pulses that corresponds to a frequency doubling conversion efficiency of 14.3%. The energy instability of the frequency-doubled pulse train measured is less than ±1% for maximum output pulse energy (∼717 μJ). Our experimental results show that KBOB is a promising nonlinear optical crystal for generating ultraviolet nanosecond laser pulses through frequency doubling.

Fe(OH)3 and Fe2O3 were first prepared by a precipitation method and then sulfated to obtain the SO2−4 -functionalized SO2−4/Fe(OH)3 and SO2−4/Fe2O3 catalysts for the selective catalytic reduction of NOx with NH3 (NH3-SCR); the promoting effect of SO2−4 functionalization on the performance of Fe2O3 catalyst in NH3-SCR was then investigated. The results indicate that the SCR activity of the SO2−4 -functionalized Fe2O3 catalysts is significantly improved in comparison with that of unmodified Fe2O3. In particular, the SO2−4/Fe(OH)3 catalyst exhibits excellent performance in NH3-SCR, with the NOx conversion of over 80% at 250–450°C; besides, it also display high catalytic stability and resistance towards H2O + SO2. A series of characterization results including XRD, Raman spectroscopy, TG analysis, FTIR spectroscopy, H2-TPR, NH3-TPD and in situ DRIFTS reveal that the functionalization with sulfuric acid can inhibit the growth of Fe2O3 grains; moreover, SO2−4 combines with Fe3+ to form the sulfate complex, leading to an increase in the number of surface acid sites and the acid strength, which can inhibit the ammonia over-oxidation on Fe2O3 and enhance the deNOx performance of Fe2O3.

Electroacupuncture (EA) treatment has proved to significantly decrease nociception in inflammatory nociception model by suppressing the phosphorylation of p38 mitogen-activated protein kinase (p38MAPK). However, repeated EA treatment results in gradual attenuation of its analgesic effects, which was defined as “EA tolerance.” Recent studies have shown that let-7b-5p microRNA (miRNA) contributes to the EA tolerance. The present study aimed to explore the function of let-7b-5p in p38MAPK pathway and the development of EA tolerance in the inflammatory nociception. Dual luciferase reporter gene experiments were used in cortical neurons to determine the target gene locus of let-7b-5p. The threshold of nociception was assessed by tail flick latency (TFL) and paw withdrawal threshold (PWT). Western blots were used to measure the expression of mitogen-activated protein kinase phosphatase 1 (MKP-1) and phosphorylation level of p38MAPK after intracerebroventricular (ICV) injections of let-7b-5p agomir, antagomir, and controls. In vitro dual luciferase experiments demonstrated that the MKP-1-3′ untranslated region (UTR) is a target of let-7b-5p. In vivo experiment, rat with repeated EA treatment exhibits gradual decrease in TFL and PWT, which showed formation of EA tolerance. This trend was delayed after IVC injection of let-7b-5p antagomir and facilitated after IVC injection of let-7b-5p agomir. The protein levels of MKP-1 in the EA+let-7b-5p antagomir group were significantly higher than in the EA + let-7b-5p agomir group. However, P-p38MAPK in the EA+let-7b-5p antagomir group was significantly lower than in the EA+let-7b-5p agomir group. By upregulating the p38MAPK pathway through the inactivation of the MKP-1 gene, let-7b-5p contributes to EA tolerance in complete Freund’s adjuvant (CFA)-induced inflammatory nociception rats. Our work revealed the mechanism of EA tolerance and indicated that let-7b-5p could be targeted to improve the long-term effects of EA. We experimentally demonstrate an optical phase conjugation (OPC) enhanced transmission system based on the Kramers–Kronig direct detection scheme. The single-sideband signal is modulated at 80-Gb/s 16-QAM with orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing. In the 180-km transmission experiment, the OPC surpasses digital chromatic dispersion compensation in Q factor, optimum launched optical power (LOP) and optical signal-to-noise ratio (OSNR) sensitivity. The improvement in Q factor, optimum LOP and OSNR sensitivity are 0.9 dB, 1.0 dB, and 1.7 dB respectively. The superiority of OPC over pure optical dispersion compensation is also analyzed by simulation. The results indicate that the OPC is an effective means to enhance the transmission performance of single-sideband signals.

α2-Adrenegic receptors (α2Rs) are important presynaptic modulators of central noradrenergic function (auto receptors) and postsynaptic mediators of many of the widespread effects of catecholamines and related drugs. Studies have shown that ruminants (such as goats and cattle) express special α2DR subtypes in addition to α2BR and α2CR. Real-time quantitative PCR and Western blotting were used to investigate the distribution and density of α2R in different nuclei of the goat central nervous system, selected regions of the spinal cord (L4-L6), and in various peripheral tissues. α2-AR subtype-specific antibodies were injected intrathecally and intracerebroventricularly into the tested goats to block the corresponding subtype of receptors. Pain threshold and physiological parameters were evaluated to explore the functional characteristics of α2BR, α2CR and α2DR in goats. Our results suggest that the expression of the mRNAs and proteins of all three α2R subtypes are widely but unevenly distributed in the goat CNS and peripheral tissues. Furthermore, α2DR plays a more important role in α2R-mediated analgesia in goats than α2BR and α2CR, whereas α2CR activation exerts a greater effect on body temperature than α2BR and α2DR.

In this work, porous aromatic frameworks (PAFs) with different pore size were evaluated for simultaneous adsorption of 16 polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) with large difference in polarity and molecular size. Two other porous organic polymers containing electron pushing/withdrawing group were investigated along for a comparison, and PAF-120 with the pore size of appr. 2.1 nm exhibited the highest extraction efficiency. Based on water contact angle and molecular dynamics simulation, the adsorption of 16 PAHs on PAF-120 was attributed to hydrophobic interaction, π-π interaction and molecular sieving effect. PAF-120/PDMS coated stir bar was then prepared by physical adhesion, and a method of stir bar sorptive extraction-gas chromatography-flame ionization detector was established for trace PAHs analysis in environmental samples. Under the optimal experimental conditions, the limits of detection (S/N = 3) for 16 PAHs were found to be in the range of 42-375 ng/L, with the relative standard deviations of 4.1-14.6% (n = 7). The enrichment factors varied from 31 (Indeno[1,2,3-cd]pyrene) to 80-fold (anthracene), with the maximal enrichment factor of 100-fold. The proposed method was applied to the analysis of PAHs in local environmental water and atmospheric particle samples. None of the 16 PAHs were detected in the collected water samples. While for the collected atmospheric particles, 12 PAHs were detected in fine particulate matter (PM
