Developments in artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning, and big data analytics have completely transformed the diagnosis, treatment, and care of patients. AI‐powered solutions are enhancing the efficiency and accuracy of healthcare delivery by demonstrating exceptional skills in personalized medicine, early disease detection, and predictive analytics. Furthermore, telemedicine and remote patient monitoring systems have overcome geographical constraints, offering easy and accessible healthcare services, particularly in underserved areas. Wearable technology, the Internet of Medical Things, and sensor technologies have empowered individuals to take an active role in tracking and managing their health. These devices facilitate real‐time data collection, enabling preventive and personalized care. Additionally, the development of 3D printing technology has revolutionized the medical field by enabling the production of customized prosthetics, implants, and anatomical models, significantly impacting surgical planning and treatment strategies. Accepting these advancements holds the potential to create a more patient‐centered, efficient healthcare system that emphasizes individualized care, preventive care, and better overall health outcomes. This review's novelty lies in exploring how these technologies are radically transforming the healthcare industry, paving the way for a more personalized and effective healthcare for all. It highlights the capacity of modern technology to revolutionize healthcare delivery by addressing long‐standing challenges and improving health outcomes. Although the approval and use of digital technology and advanced data analysis face scientific and regulatory obstacles, they have the potential for transforming translational research. as these technologies continue to evolve, they are poised to significantly alter the healthcare environment, offering a more sustainable, efficient, and accessible healthcare ecosystem for future generations. Innovation across multiple fronts will shape the future of advanced healthcare technology, revolutionizing the provision of healthcare, enhancing patient outcomes, and equipping both patients and healthcare professionals with the tools to make better decisions and receive personalized treatment. As these technologies continue to develop and become integrated into standard healthcare practices, the future of healthcare will probably be more accessible, effective, and efficient than ever before.

Abstract Mosquitoes are important vectors for the transmission of several infectious diseases that lead to huge morbidity and mortality. The exhaustive use of synthetic insecticides has led to widespread resistance and environmental pollution. Using essential oils and nano-emulsions as novel insecticides is a promising alternative approach for controlling vector borne diseases. In the current study, Lantana camara EO and NE were evaluated for their larvicidal and pupicidal activities against Anopheles culicifacies. The inhibitory effect of EO and NE on AChE, NSE (α/β), and GST was also evaluated and compared. GC-MS analysis of oil displayed 61 major peaks. The stable nano-emulsion with an observed hydrodynamic diameter of 147.62 nm was formed using the o/w method. The nano-emulsion exhibited good larvicidal (LC50 50.35 ppm and LC90 222.84 ppm) and pupicidal (LC50 54.82 ppm and LC90 174.58 ppm) activities. Biochemical evaluations revealed that LCEO and LCNE inhibited AChE, NSE (α/β), and GST, displaying LCNE to be a potent binder to AChE and NSE enzyme, whereas LCEO showed higher binding potency towards GST. The nano-emulsion provides us with novel opportunities to target different mosquito enzymes with improved insecticidal efficacy. Due to its natural origin, it can be further developed as a safer and more potent larvicide/insecticide capable of combating emerging insecticide resistance.

Abstract This paper presents a novel, dual-band, four-port multi-input–multi-output (MIMO) antenna for 28/38 GHz millimeter wave 5G wearable applications. In the proposed work, we have used a novel design approach to get the dual-band behavior from a MIMO design with a small footprint of 18 × 8.5 × 0.25 mm3. For this purpose, each MIMO element is designed as a composite form of a circular and elliptical structure connected with a narrow strip and fed by a tapered feedline. The peak realized gains and total efficiencies of the antenna, evaluated in free space, are 4.15 dBi, 7.73 dBi and 80.13%, 85.44% at 28 GHz and 38 GHz frequencies, respectively. To appraise the thorough behavior of the MIMO antenna, we have evaluated all the parameters of the antenna: Envelope Correlation Coefficient (ECC), Diversity Gain (DG), Mean Effective Gain (MEG), Channel Capacity Loss (CCL), and Total Active Reflection Coefficient (TARC), and found them satisfactory. Channel capacity of the antenna at SNR = 20 dB is found to be 21.61 bps/Hz. For wearable applications, the proposed 4-port MIMO antenna is designed on a flexible Rogers 3003 substrate, and the performance is checked by evaluating bending analysis. The safety of the antenna is verified by analyzing the 1 g/10 g SAR at 28/38 GHz and the corresponding average SAR values are 0.11/0.08 W/kg and 0.05/0.04 W/kg, respectively. All the average SAR values for the proposed MIMO antenna are within the acceptable limits according to FCC/ICNIRP standards.

Rice, a staple food for a significant portion of the global population, faces persistent threats from various pathogens and pests, necessitating the development of resilient crop varieties. Deployment of resistance genes in rice is the best practice to manage diseases and reduce environmental damage by reducing the application of agro-chemicals. Genome editing technologies, such as CRISPR-Cas, have revolutionized the field of molecular biology, offering precise and efficient tools for targeted modifications within the rice genome. This study delves into the application of these tools to engineer novel alleles of resistance genes in rice, aiming to enhance the plant’s innate ability to combat evolving threats. By harnessing the power of genome editing, researchers can introduce tailored genetic modifications that bolster the plant’s defense mechanisms without compromising its essential characteristics. In this study, we synthesize recent advancements in genome editing methodologies applicable to rice and discuss the ethical considerations and regulatory frameworks surrounding the creation of genetically modified crops. Additionally, it explores potential challenges and future prospects for deploying edited rice varieties in agricultural landscapes. In summary, this study highlights the promise of genome editing in reshaping the genetic landscape of rice to confront emerging challenges, contributing to global food security and sustainable agriculture practices.

In this paper, a dual-band 4-port Multiple Input Multiple Output (MIMO) antenna with very small footprints of $16 \times 12 \times 0.25$ mm3 is proposed for mm-wave applications. The proposed antenna operates in dual frequency bands at 28 GHz and 41.69 GHz. The isolation of the MIMO antenna is achieved >20dB at both the operating frequency bands by etching the slot at optimized position in the ground plane. The calculated diversity parameters of the antenna are acceptable for MIMO applications. The realized peak gain, Envelope Correlation Coefficient (ECC) and Diversity Gain (DG) are found to be 6.05 dBi, $\le 0.10$ , and 9.89 dB, respectively. Moreover, the Mean Effective Gain (MEG), Channel Capacity Loss (CCL) and Total Active Reflection Coefficient (TARC) are evaluated to verify the proposed antenna performance in MIMO technology. The channel capacity is evaluated to demonstrate the superiority of the MIMO antenna over single port antenna. Bending analysis of the antenna is also done to check the feasibility of this antenna for high data rate mm-wave wearable applications. In addition to that, antenna reflection coefficient is measured on chest and hand of human body for wireless body area network. Finally, to ensure the electromagnetic radiation safety, the specific absorption ratio (SAR) is evaluated at 28/41.69 GHz for input power of 500mW and found within the acceptable range.

Purpose: There has been a sudden increase in the number of rhino-orbital mucormycosis cases, primarily affecting patients recovering from COVID-19 infection. The local health authorities have declared the current situation an epidemic. In this study, we assess the role of exenteration in preventing disease progression and improving survival in patients with rhino-orbital mucormycosis. Methods: The patients undergoing exenteration were grouped into the exenteration arm and those denying exenteration were grouped into the nonexenteration arm. The patients were followed at 1 month and 3 months. The 6-month survival data were collected telephonically. Continuous data were presented as Mean ± SD/Median (IQR) depending on the normality distribution of data, whereas the frequency with percentages was used to present the categorical variables. Kaplan–Meier survival curves were created to estimate the difference in survival of patients with exenteration in rhino-orbital mucormycosis versus those without exenteration. Results: A total of 14 patients were recruited for our study based on the inclusion and exclusion criteria. All the patients were qualified for exenteration; however, only eight patients underwent exenteration and six patients did not consent to exenteration. At the end of 3 months in the exenteration group, four (50%) patients died. Two patients died within a week of exenteration, whereas two patients died after 2 weeks of exenteration. The deaths in the first week were attributed to septic shock and the deaths happening beyond 2 weeks were attributed to severe meningitis. The Kaplan–Meier survival analysis showed the cumulative probability of being alive at 1 month in the exenteration arm to be 85%, and it decreased to 67% by 53 days and subsequently remained stable until the end of 3 months. Conclusion: The Kaplan–Meier survival analysis did not show a survival benefit of exenteration at 3 months and 6 months in COVID-associated rhino-orbital mucormycosis.

Cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) remain a major global health burden, and emerging evidence suggests that the gut microbiome plays a pivotal role in their pathogenesis and progression. This review paper aims to comprehensively analyze the intricate interplay between the gut microbiome and cardiovascular health. An extensive examination of existing literature explores how gut microbial composition and function influence CVD risk factors, such as inflammation, lipid metabolism, and blood pressure regulation. Additionally, we delve into the impact of dietary patterns, medications, and lifestyle factors on shaping the gut microbiota and how these changes can exacerbate or ameliorate cardiovascular outcomes. We also discuss COVID-19, gut microbiome and CVDs. Furthermore, we discuss the potential of gut microbiome-targeted interventions as promising avenues for preventing and managing CVDs. By consolidating the current knowledge, this review aims to shed light on the intricate link between the gut microbiome and cardiovascular diseases and highlights the potential for novel therapeutic strategies to combat this significant public health challenge.

In this paper, we present the design of a millimeter-wave 1 × 4 linear MIMO array antenna that operates across multiple resonance frequency bands: 26.28–27.36 GHz, 27.94–28.62 GHz, 32.33–33.08 GHz, and 37.59–39.47 GHz, for mm-wave wearable biomedical telemetry application. The antenna is printed on a flexible substrate with dimensions of 11.0 × 44.0 mm2. Each MIMO antenna element features a modified slot-loaded triangular patch, incorporating ‘cross’-shaped slots in the ground plane to improve impedance matching. The MIMO antenna demonstrates peak gains of 6.12, 8.06, 5.58, and 8.58 dBi at the four resonance frequencies, along with a total radiation efficiency exceeding 75%. The proposed antenna demonstrates excellent diversity metrics, with an ECC < 0.02, DG > 9.97 dB, and CCL below 0.31 bits/sec/Hz, indicating high performance for mm-wave applications. To verify its properties under flexible conditions, a bending analysis was conducted, showing stable S-parameter results with deformation radii of 40 mm (Rx) and 25 mm (Ry). SAR values for the MIMO antenna are calculated at 28.0/38.0 GHz. The average SAR values for 1 gm/10 gm of tissues at 28.0 GHz are found to be 0.0125/0.0079 W/Kg, whereas, at 38.0 GHz, average SAR values are 0.0189/0.0094 W/Kg, respectively. Additionally, to demonstrate the telemetry range of biomedical applications, a link budget analysis at both 28.0 GHz and 38.0 GHz frequencies indicated strong signal strength of 33.69 dB up to 70 m. The fabricated linear MIMO antenna effectively covers the mm-wave 5G spectrum and is suitable for wearable and biomedical applications due to its flexible characteristics.

Electrocatalytic proton exchange membranes (PEMs) represent a promising avenue for advancing the field of electrochemical energy conversion and storage by combining the proton-conducting function of PEMs with enhanced catalytic activity by incorporation of metal ions. Here, we systematically studied the ZnO-based metal-organic framework (MOF) and found the introduction of pegylated ZnO to the (diethyl methylamine)/(H2PO4) matrix to form the p-type conducting MOF membrane with a bandgap of 3.67 eV. This membrane not only has a high protonic conductivity of 0.027 S/cm at 300 K with a transference number >0.99 but also possesses high activity (Tafel slope ∼36 mV/decade). The high reaction kinetics supported by finite element modeling simulations shows its ability to produce efficient and sustainable hydrogen. Our results suggest high current density of 1.52 mA/cm2, a turn over frequency [H2 (s−1)] ∼0.474×1018s−1, and a stability of 168 h in neutral medium (pH = 7). This work will enhance new strategies for fabricating membranes with ionic liquid in order to get membranes with protonic conductivity along with high activity for large-scale water electrolysis.

Background: A healthy lid-wiper is an important component of a healthy ocular surface. Any abnormality or irregularity of the lid wiper can potentially damage a relatively healthy ocular surface. Stevens–Johnson syndrome, toxic epidermal necrolysis, and ocular cicatricial pemphigoid are some of the examples that can result in lid-margin keratinization during the course of the disease. These permanent changes at the lid margin mechanically abrade the corneal surface and facilitate corneal neovascularization. The corneal clarity is lost over time, and the patients have corneal blindness. Purpose: This video discusses the role of a healthy lid-wiper, conditions causing lid-margin keratinization and subsequent lid-wiper keratopathy, and surgical technique in mucous membrane grafting. Synopsis: The video demonstrates the technique of restoration of a healthy lid margin by doing a mucous membrane graft for lid-margin keratinization and its role in the prevention of corneal blindness. Highlights: Lid-margin keratinization is essentially a chronic sequela and is often ignored till irreversible corneal changes develop. Iron redox flow batteries (IRFBs) are cost-efficient RFBs that have the potential to develop low-cost grid energy storage. Electrode kinetics are pivotal in defining the cycle life and energy efficiency of the battery. In this study, graphite felt (GF) is heat-treated at 400, 500 and 600 °C, and its physicochemical and electrochemical properties are studied using XPS, FESEM, Raman and cyclic voltammetry. Surface morphology and structural changes suggest that GF heat-treated at 500 °C for 6 h exhibits acceptable thermal stability while accessing the benefits of heat treatment. Specific capacitance was calculated for assessing the wettability and electrochemical properties of pristine and treated electrodes. The 600 °C GF has the highest specific capacitance of 34.8 Fg−1 at 100 mV s−1, but the 500 °C GF showed the best battery performance. The good battery performance of the 500 °C GF is attributed to the presence of oxygen functionalities and the absence of thermal degradation during heat treatment. The battery consisting of 500 °C GF electrodes offered the highest voltage efficiency of ~74%, Coulombic efficiency of ~94%, and energy efficiency of ~70% at 20 mA cm−2. Energy efficiency increased by 7% in a battery consisting of heat-treated GF in comparison to pristine GF. The battery is capable of operating for 100 charge–discharge cycles with an average energy efficiency of ~ 67% for over 100 cycles.

Electrodes are one of the key components that influence the performance of all-vanadium redox flow batteries (VRFBs). A porous graphite felt with modified fiber surfaces that can provide a high specific activation surface is preferred as the electrode of a VRFB. In this study, a simple binder-free approach is developed for preparing stable carbon nanotube modified graphite felt electrodes (CNT-GFs). Heat-treated graphite felt electrodes (H-GFs) are dip-coated using CNT homogeneous solution. Cyclic voltammetry (CV) and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) results conclude that CNT-GFs have less resistance, better reaction currents, and reversibility as compared to H-GF. Cell performances showed that CNT-GFs significantly improve the performance of a VRFB, especially for the CNT-GF served in the positive side of the VRFB. CNT presence increases the electrochemical properties of the graphite electrode; as a result, reaction kinetics for both VO2+/VO2+ and V3+/V2+ are improved. Positive CNT-GF (P-CNT-GF) configured VRFB exhibits voltage efficiency, coulombic efficiency, and energy efficiency of 85%, 97%, and 82%, respectively, at the operating current density of 100 mA cm−2. At high current density of 200 mA cm−2, the VRFB with P-CNT-GF shows 73%, 98%, and 72% of the voltage, coulombic, and energy efficiencies, respectively. The energy efficiency of the CNT-GF is 6% higher when compared with that of B-H-GF. The VRFB with CNT-GF can provide stable performance for 300 cycles at 200 mA cm−2.

Purpose: To determine the demographic and microbiological profile involved in the causation of corneal ulcers in Eastern India during the COVID era. Method: Patients presenting with corneal ulcers fulfilling the inclusion and exclusion criteria were taken as the case. The study duration was from January 2021 to December 2021. Socio-demographic details and information about risk factors were noted. A detailed corneal examination followed by corneal scraping was performed for microbiological evaluation. Results: In 1 year, 99 infective corneal ulcer patients were evaluated. Farmers (24.2%) were found to be maximally affected by corneal ulcers. The peak in cases was recorded from October to December (38.4%). Ocular trauma was the commonest risk factor (42.4%). The majority (80.8%) of patients were already on some topical antimicrobials. 22.2% of samples showed fungal filaments on KOH mount; 54.5% of these cases turned out to be culture-positive. 17.56% of KOH-negative samples turned out to be culture-positive (fungal). Overall, the culture positivity rate was 28.28% out of which fungal isolates were 89.28% and bacterial isolates were 10.72%. Fusarium species were identified as the most common organism contributing 42.85%, followed by Aspergillus fumigatus (14.28%). 10.72% of cases were culture positive for Pseudomonas aeuroginosa. Conclusion: Trauma with the organic matter was the predominant cause of fungal keratitis. In this study, fungal keratitis was found to be more common. Fusarium was the most common isolate.

Purpose: To analyze the correlation between the mean retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) and ganglion cell layer (GCL) thickness with axial length and refractive errors among children aged 5–15 years. Methods: This cross-sectional, observational study was done on 130 eyes of 65 consecutive subjects with refractive errors. The patients were evaluated for RNFL thickness and macular GCL thickness using spectral domain- optical coherence tomography. Results: One hundred and thirty eyes of 65 subjects aged between 5 and 15 years were divided into three groups based on their spherical equivalent in diopters (D). The children with a spherical equivalent of ≤−0.50 D were considered myopic, ≥−0.5 to ≤+0.5 D were considered emmetropic, and ≥+0.50 D were considered hypermetropic. RNFL thickness and GCL thickness were correlated with age, gender, spherical equivalent, and axial length. The mean global RNFL thickness was 104.58 μm ± 7.567. Conclusion: There exists a negative correlation between RNFL thickness and macular GCL thickness with increasing severity of myopia and increase in axial length, and the possible reason could be stretching of the sclera, which further leads to stretching of the retina, resulting in thinner RNFL and macular GCL thickness.

Background: The current embryo selection methods rely on subjective grading of embryo morphology or a real-time monitoring of the embryonic development and assessment of multiple quantitative endpoints. Even up to 40% of morphologically normal embryos harbour aneuploidies. Preimplantation genetic testing (PGT) is a technology, which gives opportunity to identify euploid embryos before implantation. Aims: This study seeks to determine the role of PGT in poor prognosis patients, i.e., patients with advanced maternal age (AMA) (maternal age ≥35 years), recurrent pregnancy loss (RPL) (miscarriages ≥2) and recurrent implantation failures (RIFs) (in vitro fertilisation failures ≥3). Setting and Design: A retrospective case–control study was done on a group of patients who underwent intracytoplasmic sperm injection for the indications of AMA, RPL and RIF. Materials and Methods: In 33 cases who opted for PGT, day 5 blastocysts were subjected to trophectoderm biopsy with the help of next-generation sequencing. Euploid blastocyst was transferred in hormone replacement cycle at a later date. In 154 controls, blastocyst transfer was done based on morphological grading. Pregnancy outcomes are compared in terms of implantation rate, pregnancy rate, miscarriage rate and multiple pregnancy rate. Statistical Analysis Used: Chi-square test was used for comparisons between the study groups with respect to percentage. P < 0.05 was considered statistically significant. Results: The highest aneuploidy rate was found in embryos with AMA. Implantation rate was found to be statistically significantly higher in the PGT group as compared to the non-PGT group. However, take-home baby rates were not improved by PGT. There were less number of mean embryos transferred in the PGT group and lower multiple pregnancy rate. Conclusions: With the application of PGT, embryo selection rates and implantation rates improved in poor prognosis patients.

Abstract Morphology-controlled strontianite nanostructures have attracted interest in various fields, such as electrocatalyst and photocatalysts. Basic additives in aqueous strontium solutions is commonly used in controlling strontianite nanostructures. Here, we show that trace water also serves an important role in forming and structuring vertically oriented strontianite nanorod arrays on strontium compounds. Using in situ Raman spectroscopy, we monitored the structural evolution from hydrated strontium to strontianite nanorods, demonstrating the epitaxial growth by vapor–liquid–solid mechanism. Water molecules cause not only the exsolution of Sr liquid droplets on the surface but also the uptake of airborne CO2 followed by its ionization to CO3 2−. The existence of intermediate SrHO+–OCO2 2− phase indicates the interaction of CO3 2− with SrOH+ in Sr(OH)x(H2O)y cluster to orient strontianite crystals. X-ray diffraction simulation and transmission electron microscopy identify the preferred-orientation plane of the 1D nanostructures as the (002) plane, i.e., the growth along the c-axis. The anisotropic growth habit is found to be affected by the kinetics of carbonation. This study paves the way for designing and developing 1D architecture of alkaline earth metal carbonates by a simple method without external additives at room temperature.

Purpose: To evaluate practice patterns in the treatment of corneal ulcer by ophthalmologists during COVID-19 pandemic in the Indian subcontinent. Methods: This was an online questionnaire-based survey circulated via google form to reach ophthalmologists practising cornea as a subspeciality between January 4, 2021 and February 3, 2021. The survey comprised of 21 questions to evaluate the prevailing practice patterns in corneal ulcer management during pandemic. Results: In total, 39.3% of government ophthalmology clinics and 41.5% of private ophthalmology clinics reported an average delay of 2 weeks in presenting to the hospital after the onset of symptoms. Totally, 60.5% of participants reported that the clinical outcomes of infectious keratitis cases during the COVID-19 pandemic were worse than before. In total, 61.3 and 41.1% of ophthalmologists in private and government sectors, respectively, were routinely performing corneal scrapings for corneal ulcer patients. The procedures were performed with adequate protective measures. In total, 68.5% participants mentioned decreased availability of donor cornea during the pandemic, and 44.4% reported compromised cornea practice due to the limited availability of essentials (tissue adhesives, BCLs, medications, etc.). A statistically significant difference of effect of pandemic on cost of services was noted between government and private hospitals. Cancer is the utmost common disease-causing death worldwide, characterized by uncontrollable cell division with the potential of metastasis. Overexpression of the Inhibitors of Apoptosis proteins (IAPs) and autophagy correlates with tumorigenesis, therapeutic resistance, and reoccurrence after anticancer therapies. This study illuminates the role and efficacy of smac mimetic compound BV6 alone and in co-treatment with death ligands such as TRAIL and TNFα in the regulation of cell death mechanisms, i.e., apoptosis and autophagy. In this study, MTT assays, wound healing assays, and cellular and nuclear morphological studies were done. DAPI staining, AO/EtBr staining and AnnexinV/PI FACS was done to study the apoptosis. The expression of IAPs and autophagy biomarkers was analyzed using Real time-PCR and western blotting. Meanwhile, TEM demonstrated autophagy and cellular autophagic vacuoles in response to the BV6. The result shows a promising anti-cancer effect of BV6 alone as well as in combinational treatment with TRAIL and TNFα, compared to the lone treatment of TRAIL and TNFα in both breast cancer cell lines. The smac mimetic compound might provide an alternative combinational therapy with conventional anticancer therapies to tackle their inefficiency at the advanced stage of cancer, cancer resistance, and reoccurrence. Also, IAPs and autophagic proteins could act as potent target molecules for the development of novel anti-cancer drugs in pathogenesis and the betterment of regimens for cancer.

The excessive use of digital platforms with rapidly increasing users in the wireless domain enforces communication systems to provide information with high data rates, high reliability and strong transmission connection quality. Wireless systems with single antenna elements are not able to accomplish the desired needs. Therefore, multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) antennas are getting more attention in modern high-speed communication systems and play an essential part in the current generation of wireless technology. However, along with their ability to significantly increase channel capacity, it is a challenge to achieve an optimal isolation in a compact size for fifth-generation (5G) terminals. Portable devices, automobiles, handheld gadgets, smart phones, wireless sensors, radio frequency identification and other applications use MIMO antenna systems. In this review paper, the fundamentals of MIMO antennas, the performance parameters of MIMO antennas, and different design approaches and methodologies are discussed to realize the three most commonly used MIMO antennas, i.e., ultra-wideband (UWB), dual-band and circularly polarized antennas. The recent MIMO antenna design approaches with UWB, dual band and circularly polarized characteristics are compared in terms of their isolation techniques, gain, efficiency, envelope correlation coefficient (ECC) and channel capacity loss (CCL). This paper is very helpful to design suitable MIMO antennas applicable in UWB systems, satellite communication systems, GSM, Bluetooth, WiMAX, WLAN and many more. The issues with MIMO antenna systems in the indoor environment along with possible solutions to improve their performance are discussed. The paper also focuses on the applications of MIMO characteristics for future sixth-generation (6G) technology.

Patients with moderate to severe dry eyes are often screened at the Dry Eye Clinic to rule out connective tissue diseases. Rheumatoid factor (RF) is one of the screening tools to rule out rheumatoid arthritis (RA). Patients who turn out positive for the RF are often subjected to anti-CCP antibody evaluation for confirmation of disease. This article tries to highlight 3 cases of negative and anti-CCP antibody positive cases which presented to the ophthalmic clinic, unaware of their systemic status. Though RF is the cheapest modality to screen for RA, it is not always a reliable marker. One should order anti-CCP antibody for patients where suspicion is high, despite RF being normal.

Background: Steven–Johnson syndrome (SJS) is a serious disorder affecting the skin and mucous membrane, causing multiple flaccid bullae and purpuric rashes with sheet-like epithelial detachment including the ocular surface. The long-term outcomes following SJS are dismal and manifest as corneal vascularization, lid-wiper keratopathy, and severe dry eyes. The disease course can be modified if amniotic membrane graft is performed at the first week of disease, and the above-said complications can be avoided. This procedure thus not only decreases the morbidity but also improves the quality of life. Purpose: This video discusses the long-term sequelae of SJS which can be modified with timely intervention during the acute stage and thus significantly decreases morbidity. Synopsis: The video demonstrates the simple technique of amniotic membrane transplantation in the acute stage in SJS and its impact in long run. Highlights: There should be a low threshold for doing early amniotic membrane transplantation in patients with SJS with ocular surface involvement. This case series aims to highlight three different clinical variants of microbiologically proven epithelial microsporidiosis, and their customised management wherein the current series, patients with suspected epithelial microsporidiosis were subjected to corneal scraping to confirm the diagnosis. Different microbiologically proven clinical variants were observed and documented. Three clinical variants of epithelial microsporidiosis were noted. The first was of 45-years-old male patient, presented with only raised punctate lesions, and responded to topical lubricants only. The second variant, 28-years-old male patient, had anterior chamber reaction (flare and cells), Keratic Precipitates and descemets folds. This variant also responded with topical lubricants over a period of one month. The third variant, 32-years-old male patient at presentation, had typical epithelial raised punctate corneal lesions, however at one week subepithelial infiltrates appeared. These lesions responded to topical steroids. The current series highlights three different clinical variants of microbiologically proven epithelial microsporidiosis and their customised management.

The sulfur poisoning and performance recovery of the state-of-the-art SOFC cathodes (La0.80Sr0.20)0.95MnO3±δ (LSM) and (La0.60Sr0.40)0.95Co0.20Fe0.80O3–δ (LSCF), have been studied. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy measurements of LSCF|GDC and LSM|YSZ half-cells are carried out in alternating atmospheres of air and SO2–air at 700°C for hundreds of hours. In the presence of SO2, the electrochemical performance of both the cells decays with ohmic and non-ohmic losses, owing to the absorption and chemical interaction of SO2 with the electrodes. In LSCF, the SrO segregated on the surface tends to absorb and react with SO2, forming SrSO4 followed by the exsolution of Co-Fe. As for LSM, SO2 is absorbed onto the Sr-rich areas of LSM, including the active reaction sites near the TPBs, leading to Sr exsolution and SrSO4 formation, leaving a Sr-deficient LSM. During the subsequent exposure to air, the performance of the sulfur-contaminated LSM is almost restored. The LSM particles, exposed to alternating atmospheres of air and SO2-air during the electrochemical tests, show a relatively clean surface with sparsely distributed SrSO4 particles, indicating a high stability against sulfur poisoning. It is suggested that the loosely adsorbed SO2 at the TPBs is readily swept away by the SO2-free air flow, recovering its ORR activity, whereas the Sr-deficient LSM due to Sr-exsolution stays modified, contributing to the incomplete performance restoration. Unlike the case of LSM, the performance of the sulfur-poisoned LSCF partially recovers during the subsequent exposure to air. Correspondingly, the LSCF particles have a modified morphology covered with numerous nanoparticles, mostly SrSO4, showing the irreversible aspect of the sulfur poisoning. The morphology modification is not concentrated near the electrode/electrolyte interface but over the entire cathode, indicating that the degree of recovery from sulfur poisoning is closely related to the presence of SrO and chemical activity of Sr in the electrodes at the solid-gas interface. These results also show the potential application of LSM for a sulfur sensor available in high-temperature harsh conditions.

Ocular Surface Squamous Neoplasia (OSSN) co-existent with fungal keratitis in an immunodeficient individual has rarely been talked about in literature. Risk factors for fungal keratitis are trauma with vegetative matter, topical steroid abuse, poor ocular surface, corneal anaesthesia, systemic immunosuppression, etc., and for OSSN a major risk factor is immunodeficiency. In current report, patient had multiple risk factors. This report highlights the management of HIV positive 42-year-old male with OSSN and fungal keratitis. A comprehensive evaluation helps clinician decide on treatment priority and achieve good clinical outcome.

RNA seq analyses were performed in granulosa cells (GCs) collected from gonadotropin treated ESR2 mutant rats. Data obtained from a null mutant with Esr2 exon 3 deletion (∆3) and another DNA binding domain (DBD) mutant with exon 4 deletion (∆4) were compared to that of wildtype (WT) rats. The raw data were analyzed using CLC genomics workbench. High quality RNA-sequencing reads were aligned to the Rattus norvegicus genome. Differentially expressed genes in ∆3 or ∆4 Esr2-mutant GCs were identified based on the following criteria: FDR p-Value ≤0.05 and an absolute fold change of 2. Fewer differentially expressed genes were identified in ∆3 compared to the ∆4 mutant group. As both mutant groups demonstrated a common phenotype of ovulation failure, differentially expressed genes common to both in ∆3 and ∆4 mutant rats were emphasized and further analyzed in the companion article “ESR2 regulates granulosa cell genes essential for follicle maturation and ovulation” [1].

Fusarium species are among the most commonly isolated causes of fungal keratitis. Most species of the genus Fusarium belong to Fusarium solani species complex (FSSC). Fusarium lichenicola, a member of the FSSC complex, is a well-established plant and human pathogen. However, reports of fungal keratitis due to Fusarium lichenicola have not been frequently reported. To the best of our knowledge, only twelve cases of Fusarium lichenicola keratitis have been reported in the past fifty years. Clinical cases of Fusarium lichenicola may have most likely been misidentified because of the lack of clinical and microbiological suspicion, as well as inadequate diagnostic facilities in many tropical countries where the burden of the disease may be the highest. We report a case of fungal keratitis caused by Fusarium lichenicola and present a global review of the literature of all cases of fungal keratitis caused by this potentially blinding fungus.

Microplastic disposal into riverine ecosystems is an emergent ecological hazard that mainly originated from land-based sources. This paper presents a comprehensive review on physical processes involved in microplastics transport in riverine ecosystems. Microplastic transport is governed by physical characteristics (e.g., plastic particle density, shape, and size) and hydrodynamics (e.g., laminar and turbulent flow conditions). High-density microplastics are likely to prevail near riverbeds, whereas low-density particles float over river surfaces. Microplastic transport occurs either due to gravity-driven (vertical transport) or settling (horizontal transport) in river ecosystems. Microplastics are subjected to various natural phenomena such as suspension, deposition, detachment, resuspension, and translocation during transport processes. Limited information is available on settling and rising velocities for various polymeric plastic particles. Therefore, this paper highlights how appropriately empirical transport models explain vertical and horizontal distribution of microplastic in riverine ecosystems. Microplastics interact, and thus feedback loops within the environment govern their fate, particularly as these ecosystems are under increasing biodiversity loss and climate change threat. This review provides outlines for fate and transport of microplastics in riverine ecosystems, which will help scientists, policymakers, and stakeholders in better monitoring and mitigating microplastics pollution.

Epilepsy affects around 50 million people across the globe and is the third most common chronic brain disorder. It is a non-communicable disease of the brain that affects people of all ages. It is accompanied by depression, anxiety, and substantially increased morbidity and mortality. A large number of third-generation anti-epileptic drugs are available, but they have multiple side-effects causing a decline in the quality of life. The inheritance and etiology of epilepsy are complex with multiple underlying genetic and epigenetic mechanisms. Different neurotransmitters play intricate functions to maintain the normal physiology of various neurons. If there is any dysregulation of neurotransmission due to aberrant transmitter levels or their receptor biology, it can result in seizures. In this review, we have discussed the roles played by various neurotransmitters and their receptors in the pathophysiology of epilepsy. Drug-resistant epilepsy (DRE) has remained one of the forefront areas of epilepsy research for a long time. Understanding the mechanisms underlying DRE is of utmost importance because of its high incidence rate among epilepsy patients and increased risks of psychosocial problems and premature death. Here we have enumerated various hypotheses of DRE. Further, we have discussed different non-conventional therapeutic strategies, including combination therapy and non-drug treatment. The recent studies supporting the modern approaches for the treatment of epilepsy have been deliberated with particular reference to the mTOR pathway, breakdown of the blood-brain barrier, and inflammatory pathways.

Ocular foreign bodies (FBs) are often encountered in clinical practices. However, there are cases in which the presence of the FB is difficult to diagnose based on mere history taking and/or clinical examination. We herein present a case of unusual subconjunctival foreign body in the form of the sting of a honey bee in a 63-year-old farmer. This was removed from the superior forniceal subconjunctival space in toto with forceps under a microscope in the operation theater. This case emphasizes the need to elicit a complete history and a careful ocular examination with double eversion of the eyelid to avoid missing any foreign body lodged in the fornices and subconjunctival space in patients who complained of foreign body sensation.

Solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs) have the potential to meet the growing need for electrical power generation if the cost per megawatt can be further reduced. Currently, SOFC stacks are replaced too frequently to be cost competitive. SOFC service life can be extended by preventing chromium- (Cr-) bearing species from evaporating from the interior surfaces of balance of plant (BOP) components and poisoning the cathode to increase the lifetime. We have developed yttria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ) and aluminum oxide- (Al2O3-) modified sol-gel paints or inks for coating BOP components. 430 stainless steel (430SS) substrates with three surface conditions were coated with the 0.8–1.5 µm thick YSZ and Al2O3 paints. The coated 430SS samples were tested for thermal cycling resistance, thermal soak, and Cr evaporation. Thermal soak and thermal cycling test results show promise for the YSZ-coated 430SS substrates. The Cr evaporation test of a coated substrate showed a 51% reduction in Cr generation, when compared with a bare substrate.

Curcumin, an active biphenolic molecule present in turmeric (Curcuma longa), has been reported to elicit plethora of health protective effects. The present study was carried out in vitro, in vivo and in silico to investigate the modulatory effects of curcumin on erythrocyte membrane Na+/K+-ATPase activity. In vitro curcumin (10−5 M to 10−8 M) was incubated with human erythrocytes membrane. In vivo curcumin (340 mg/kg b.w. and 170 mg/kg b.w.) was supplemented to wistar rats for 21 days. In silico, catalytic unit α of Na+/K+-ATPase (3b8e.pdb) protein was used as a receptor for the natural ligand ATP to study curcumin-mediated docking simulation using AutoDock4. In this article, a dual band annular ring patch antenna is theoretically investigated using the equivalent circuit concept.Two symmetrical rectangular notches are etched in radiating ring patch with respect to feed point. It is observed that the resonant frequency is directly proportional to the notch width and notch length. The bandwidth of the antenna at lower and higher ends are 134 MHz(1.815-1.681GHz) and 212MHz (2.849-2.637GHz) respectively for given antenna specifications. The calculated results are compared with the IE3D simulation software and previously reported results based on Artificial Neural Network (ANN). The theoretical results obtained from the proposed analysis are in good agreement with the simulated and ANN based results.

Perovskite anodes, nowadays, are used in any solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) instead of conventional nickel/yttria-stabilized zirconia (Ni/YSZ) anodes due to their better redox and electrochemical stability. A few compositions of samarium-substituted strontium titanate perovskite, SmxSr1−xTiO3−δ (x = 0.00, 0.05, 0.10, 0.15, and 0.20), were synthesized via the citrate-nitrate auto-combustion route. The XRD patterns of these compositions confirm that the solid solubility limit of Sm in SrTiO3 is x < 0.15. The X-ray Rietveld refinement for all samples indicated the perovskite cubic structure with a P m 3 ¯ m space group at room temperature. The EDX mapping of the field emission scanning electron microscope (FESEM) micrographs of all compositions depicted a lower oxygen content in the specimens respect to the nominal value. This lower oxygen content in the samples were also confirmed via XPS study. The grain sizes of SmxSr1−xTiO3 samples were found to increase up to x = 0.10 and it decreases for the composition with x > 0.10. The AC conductivity spectra were fitted by Jonscher’s power law in the temperature range of 500−700 °C and scaled with the help of the Ghosh and Summerfield scaling model taking νH and σdc T as the scaling parameters. The scaling behaviour of the samples showed that the conduction mechanism depends on temperature at higher frequencies. Further, a study of the conduction mechanism unveiled that small polaron hopping occurred with the formation of electrons. The electrical conductivity, in the H2 atmosphere, of the Sm0.10Sr0.90TiO3 sample was found to be 2.7 × 10−1 S∙cm−1 at 650 °C, which is the highest among the other compositions. Hence, the composition Sm0.10Sr0.90TiO3 can be considered as a promising material for the application as the anode in SOFCs.

Solid oxide electrochemical systems, such as solid oxide fuel cells (SOFC), solid oxide electrolysis cells (SOEC), and oxygen transport membranes (OTM) enable clean and reliable production of energy or fuel for a range of applications, including, but not limited to, residential, commercial, industrial, and grid-support. These systems utilize solid-state ceramic oxides which offer enhanced stability, fuel flexibility, and high energy conversion efficiency throughout operation. However, the nature of system conditions, such as high temperatures, complex redox atmosphere, and presence of volatile reactive species become taxing on solid oxide materials and limit their viability during long-term operation. Ongoing research efforts to identify the material corrosion and degradation phenomena, as well as discover possible mitigation techniques to extend material efficiency and longevity, is the current focus of the research and industrial community. In this review, degradation processes in select solid oxide electrochemical systems, system components, and comprising materials will be discussed. Overall degradation phenomena are presented and certain degradation mechanisms are discussed. State-of-the-art technologies to mitigate or minimize the above-mentioned degradation processes are presented.

Objective: The primary objective was to study the epidemiology of Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) positive tribal patients, and the secondary objective was to study the associated comorbidities in a tertiary care hospital in the tribal (Bastar) region of Chhattisgarh, India, between December 2006 and November 2008, and their relation to CD4 counts. Materials and Methods : In this study 90 tribal HIV positive subjects were enrolled. Information on demographics, that is, weight, height, age, educational status, sex, clinical finding, and laboratory parameters (CD4 counts) were noted. Results: Among 90 HIV patients, 54 (60%) were males and 36 (40%) were females. Among these, most patients, 37 (41.1%), were in the age group of 30 to 39 years. Among these patients, 79.56% belonged to the lower socioeconomic status, whereas, only 1.45% were from a high socioeconomic status. The largest group was made up of drivers (32.2%), with the second largest group being housewives (27.7%) and laborers (17.7%), respectively. A majority of the patients had a low education, 35.5% were educated only up to the fifth standard and 31.8% up to high school, while 18.8% were illiterate. The predominant mode of transmission was heterosexual contact (78.8%), only one patient (1.1%) was infected through transfusion of infected blood, five (5.5%) patients acquired infection via vertical (mother to child) transmission, and in 13 patients the transmission history was not clear. Conclusion: There was a high frequency of behavioral risk factors, together with unawareness, and very little health infrastructure, thus creating an impending risk for the rapid spread of HIV/AIDS (acquired immunodeficiency syndrome).

Electrical conductivity of Se90-xTe5Sn5Inx (x = 0, 3, 6 and 9) glassy systems was studied employing impedance spectroscopic technique in the frequency range 100 Hz to 1 MHz and in the temperature range 308-388 K. The DC conductivity (σdc) at each temperature was evaluated from the low frequency plateau region for all the samples under investigation. The bulk conductivity for each sample was also evaluated from Nyquist impedance plots. The semicircle shape of Nyquist plot exhibit dipolar nature of samples. The activation energy for glassy, amorphous and crystalline region from the Arrhenius plot of the DC conductivity and bulk conductivity was evaluated. From the results it is found that activation energy varied from 0.091 to 0.194 eV in glassy, 0.686 to 0.002 eV in amorphous and 0.215 to 0.503 eV in crystalline region. The activation energy (ΔE) from DC conductivity and bulk conductivity found to be close in corresponding regions. The pre-exponential factor was also calculated for all three regions.

Curcumin ((1E,6E)-1,7-Bis(4-hydroxy-3-methoxyphenyl)-1,6-heptadiene-3,5-dione), the yellow biphenolic pigment isolated from turmeric (Curcuma longa), has various medicinal benefits through antioxidation, anti-inflammation, cardiovascular protection, immunomodulation, enhancing of the apoptotic process, and antiangiogenic property. We explored the effects of curcumin in vitro (10−5 M to 10−8 M) and in vivo (340 and 170 mg/kg b.w., oral) on Na+/K+ ATPase (NKA), Na+/H+ exchanger (NHE) activity, and membrane lipid hydroperoxides (ROOH) in control and experimental oxidative stress erythrocytes of Wistar rats. As a result, we found that curcumin potently modulated the membrane transporters activity with protecting membrane lipids against hydro-peroxidation in control as well as oxidatively challenged erythrocytes evidenced by stimulation of NKA, downregulation of NHE, and reduction of ROOH in the membrane. The observed results corroborate membrane transporters activity with susceptibility of erythrocyte membrane towards oxidative damage. Results explain the protective mechanism of curcumin against oxidative stress mediated impairment in ions-transporters activity and health beneficial effects.

Abstract In this paper, a modified L-strip fed patch antenna is theoretically analyzed for wideband applications. Dual U-shaped slots are incorporated in the radiating patch and a maximum bandwidth of 16.93% (2.65 GHz to 3.14 GHz) is achieved. Further, when two parasitic elements are used, antenna bandwidth improves up to 25.89% (2.90 GHz to 3.77 GHz). The maximum gain of dual U-slotted patch and with parasitic elements is 8.23 dBi and 8.46 dBi respectively. Antenna parameters are calculated by CST Microwave studio and equivalent circuit model theory is presented. The proposed antenna is fabricated and the measured results compare well with the theoretical as well as simulated results.
