The BL Lac Object PKS 1717+177 has been identified as potential neutrino-emitting AGN in the point source stacking analysis of IceCube data. We explore peculiarities in the morphology and kinematics of the jet and examine multi-wavelength light curves for distinctive effects which might allow to pinpoint a likely neutrino generation mechanism. We re-modeled 34 high resolution radio interferometric Very Long Baseline Array (VLBA) observations obtained at 15 GHz (between 1999/12/27 and 2023/05/03). A correlation and periodicity analysis of optical KAIT and Tuorla data, as well as for Fermi-LAT $\gamma$-ray data has been performed. The nuclear jet appears deflected and bent at about 0.5 mas distance from the radio core by an encounter with a dark, unseen object. The deviation of the jet evolves over 23.5 years from a simple apparent bend into a significantly meandering structure with increasing amplitude: a zig-zag line. To our knowledge, this is the first time that the temporal evolution of a jet deviation can be traced. The turning point shifts with time and the jet seems to brighten up almost periodically at the point of deviation. The radio core as well as the jet contribute approximately equally to the total flux-density at 15 GHz. We discuss scenarios which could explain the complex jet bending and quasi-regular flaring. We propose that the jet could either be deflected by the magnetosphere of a second massive black hole, by the pressure gradient due to a circumnuclear dense cloud, or via gravitational lensing by an intervening black hole., Comment: 22 pages, 9 figures, in print in MNRAS

The extremes of Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) variability offer valuable new insights into the drivers and physics of AGN. We discuss some of the most extreme cases of AGN variability; the highest amplitudes, deep minima states, extreme spectral states, Seyfert-type changes, and semi-periodic signals, including new X-ray observations. The properties of changing-look (CL) AGN are briefly reviewed and a classification scheme is proposed which encompasses the variety of CL phenomena; distinguishing slow and fast events, repeat events, and frozen-look AGN which do not show any emission-line response. Long-term light curves that are densely covered over multiple years, along with follow-up spectroscopy, are utilized to gain insight into the underlying variability mechanisms including accretion disk and broad-line region physics. Remarkable differences are seen, for instance, in the optical spectral response to extreme outbursts, implying distinct intrinsic variability mechanisms. Furthermore, we discuss methods for distinguishing between CL AGN and CL look-alike events (tidal disruption events or supernovae in dense media). Finally, semi-periodic light curve variability is addressed and the latest multiwavelength (MWL) light curve of the binary supermassive black hole (SMBH) candidate OJ 287 from the MOMO project is presented. In this paper, we study and compare the optical and X-ray counterparts of subparsec supermassive black hole binaries (SMBHBs). With that aim, we simulated the profiles of optical spectral lines emitted from the broad line region (BLR) as well as X-ray spectral lines emitted from the relativistic accretion disks around both black holes and compared them with each other. The obtained results showed that SMBHBs could cause a specific, but different variability of the lines from the optical part and Fe K$\alpha$ line, leaving potentially detectable imprints in their profiles. Since these imprints depend on the orbital phase of the system, they could be used for reconstructing the Keplerian orbits of the components in the observed SMBHBs. Moreover, such signatures in the optical and X-ray line profiles of the observed SMBHBs could be used as a tool for the detection of these objects as well as for studying their properties., Comment: 18 pages, 1 table, 10 figures. We discuss the polarization of broad emission lines in the type 1 active galactic nuclei (AGNs). The polarization depends on the geometry of the broad line region (BLR), and also on the polarization mechanism, or distribution of the scattering material. Therefore the polarization measurements can indicate the geometry of the BLR and the mechanism of polarization (equatorial or polar scattering). In addition, the polarization angle (PA) shape across the line profile can be used to measure the supermassive black hole (SMBH) mass, and constrain the BLR characteristics. We give an overview of ours and other recent investigations of the polarization in broad lines from both aspects: theoretical and observational., Comment: accepted in Ast.Nach. The perfect case for time-domain investigations are active galactic nuclei (AGNs) since they are luminous objects that show strong variability. Key result from the studies of AGNs variability is the estimated mass of a supermassive black hole (SMBH), which resides in the center of an AGN. Moreover, the spectral variability of AGN can be used to study the structure and physics of the broad line region, which in general can be hardly directly observed. We present new spectroscopic and polarimetric observations of the first discovered gravitational lens Q0957+561 obtained with the 6m telescope of the Special Astrophysical Observatory (SAO, Russia). We explore spectropolarimetric parameters of Q0957+561 A,B components to investigate the innermost structure of the quasar, and explore the nature of polarization in lensed quasars. Additionally, we compare their present-day spectral characteristics with previous observations in order to study long-term spectral changes. We analyze spectral characteristics of lensed quasar comparing spectra of A and B images, as well as comparing previously observed image spectra with present-day ones. The polarization parameters of A-B images are compared. We also model the macro-lens influence on the polarization of the images representing the gravitational lens with a singular isothermal elliptical potential. We find that the brightness and SED ratio of components A and B changed during a long period. Polarization in broad lines of components A and B showed that the equatorial scattering cannot be detected in this quasar. We find wavelength-dependent polarization that may be explained as a combination of the polarization from the disc and outflowing material. There is a significant difference between polarization parameters of the A and B images: the B component shows a higher polarization degree and polarization angle. However, both polarization vectors are nearly perpendicular to the observed radio jet projection. It indicates that the polarization in the continuum is coming from the accretion disc. Our simple lensing model of a polarized source showed that macro-lens can cause the observed differences in polarization parameters of Q0957+561 A,B images. Using Mg II broad line and luminosity of component A we estimated that the Q0957+561 black hole mass is M~(4.8-6.1) $10^8$ M$\odot$, Comment: accepted in AA

We present observations from the short-term intensive optical campaign (from Sep2019 to Jan2020) of the changing-look Seyfert NGC 3516. This active galactic nucleus is known to have strong optical variability and has changed its type in the past. It has been in the low-activity state in the optical since 2013, with some rebrightening from the end of 2015 to the beginning of 2016, after which it remained dormant. We aim to study the photometric and spectral variability of NGC 3516 from the new observations in U- and B-bands and examine the profiles of the optical broad emission lines in order to demonstrate that this object may be entering a new state of activity. NGC 3516 has been monitored intensively for the past 4 months with an automated telescope in U and B filters, enabling accurate photometry of 0.01 precision. Spectral observations were triggered when an increase in brightness was spotted. We support our analysis of past-episodes of violent variability with the UV and X-ray long-term light curves constructed from the archival Swift data. An increase of the photometric magnitude is seen in both U and B filters to a maximum amplitude of 0.25mag and 0.1 mag, respectively. During the flare, we observe stronger forbidden high-ionization iron lines than reported before, as well as the complex broad Ha and Hb lines. This is especially seen in Ha which appears to be double-peaked. It seems that a very broad component of ~10,000 km/s in width in the Balmer lines is appearing. The trends in the optical, UV, and X-ray light curves are similar, with the amplitudes of variability being significantly larger in the case of UV and X-ray bands. The increase of the continuum emission, the variability of the coronal lines, and the very broad component in the Balmer lines may indicate that the AGN of NGC 3516 is finally leaving the low-activity state in which it has been for the last ~3 years., Comment: 7 pages, 6 figures, accepted in A&A (corrected after receiving comments from the language editor)

Here we give an observational method for measurements of the equatorial scattering region radius using variability in the polarized broad lines in Type 1 active galactic nuclei (AGNs). The polarization in broad lines of Type 1 AGNs is mostly caused by equatorial scattering, where specific features allow one to separate its contribution from the total polarized flux. We propose to monitor variability in the polarized line flux and find the time lag between the nonpolarized continuum and polarized broad line variability. The distance to the scattering screen can then be determined from the time delay. The method was, for the first time, applied to the observations of the Type 1 AGN Mrk 6, and we found that the size of the scattering region in this AGN is around 100 light days. That is significantly smaller than the dusty region size estimated by the infrared interferometric observations and also larger than known broad line region (BLR) size. This indicates that the scattering region lies between the BLR and the dusty region and could be used as a probe of the dust sublimation radius., Comment: Accepted to ApJ

We study the Baldwin Effect (BE) in 96 core-jet blazars with optical and ultraviolet spectroscopic data from a radio-loud AGN sample obtained from the MOJAVE 2 cm survey. A statistical analysis is presented of the equivalent widths ($W_{\lambda}$) of emission lines H$\beta\,\lambda$4861, Mg II\,$\lambda$2798, C IV\,$\lambda$1549, and continuum luminosities at 5100\,\AA, 3000\,\AA, and 1350\,\AA. The BE is found statistically significant (with confidence level \textit{c.l.} $\geq\,$ 95\%) in H$\beta$ and C IV emission lines, while for Mg II the trend is slightly less significant (\textit{c.l.} = 94.5\%). The slopes of the BE in the studied samples for H$\beta$ and Mg II are found steeper and with statistically significant difference than those of a comparison radio-quiet sample. We present simulations of the expected BE slopes produced by the contribution to the total continuum of the non-thermal boosted emission from the relativistic jet, and by variability of the continuum components. We find that the slopes of the BE between radio-quiet and radio-loud AGN should not be different, under the assumption that the broad line is only being emitted by the canonical broad line region around the black hole. We present new spectroscopic and polarimetric observations of the gravitational lens SDSS J1004+4112 taken with the 6m telescope of the Special Astrophysical Observatory (SAO, Russia). In order to explain the variability that is observed only in the blue wing of the C IV emission line, corresponding to image A, we analyze the spectroscopy and polarimetry of the four images of the lensed system. Spectra of the four images were taken in 2007, 2008, and 2018, and polarization was measured in the period 2014-2017. Additionally, we modeled the microlensing effect in the polarized light, assuming that the source of polarization is the equatorial scattering in the inner part of the torus. We find that a blue enhancement in the CIV line wings affects component A in all three epochs. We also find that the UV continuum of component D was amplified in the period 2007-2008, and that the red wings of CIII] and CIV appear brighter in D than in the other three components. We report significant changes in the polarization parameters of image D, which can be explained by microlensing.Our simulations of microlensing of an equatorial scattering region in the dusty torus can qualitatively explain the observed changes in the polarization degree and angle of image D. We do not detect significant variability in the polarization parameters of the other images (A, B, and C), although the averaged values of the polarization degree and angle are different for the different images. Microlensing of a broad line region model including a compact outflowing component can qualitatively explain the CIV blue wing enhancement (and variation) in component A. Here we study the potential observational signatures of supermassive black hole binaries (SMBHBs) in the Fe K$\alpha$ line profiles emitted from the accretion disks around their components. We simulated the Fe K$\alpha$ line emission from the relativistic accretion disks using ray tracing method in Kerr metric. The obtained profiles from the SMBHBs are then compared with those in the case of the single supermassive black holes (SMBHs). We considered two models of the SMBHBs: a model when the secondary SMBH is embedded in the accretion disk around the primary, causing an empty gap in the disk, and a model with clearly separated components, where the accretion disks around both primary and secondary give a significant contribution to the composite Fe K$\alpha$ line emission of a such SMBHB. The obtained results showed that both models of SMBHBs can leave imprints in the form of ripples in the cores of the emitted Fe K$\alpha$ line profiles, which may look like an absorption component in the line profile. However, in the case of the composite line profiles emitted from two accretion disks, these ripples could have much higher amplitudes and strongly depend on orbital phase of the system, while for those emitted from a disk with an empty gap, the corresponding ripples mostly have lower amplitudes and do not vary significantly with orbital phase. The present day X-ray telescopes are not able to detect such signatures in the observed X-ray spectra of SMBHBs. However this will be possible with the next generation of X-ray observatories, which will also enable application of such effects as a tool for studying the properties of these objects., Comment: 16 pages, 5 figures, 1 table. Here we present the long-term optical spectral monitoring of a changing-look active galactic nuclei (AGN) NGC 3516 that covers 22 years (from 1996 to 2018). We explore a variability in the broad lines and continuum, finding that the continuum is changing by more than a factor of 2, while the broad lines are varying by more than a factor of 10. The minimum of activity is observed in 2014, when the broad lines almost disappeared. We confirm that NGC 3516 is a changing-look AGN, and the absorption seen in the UV and X-ray may indicate that there is an obscuring region which is responsible for this. The line profiles are also changing. The mean profiles of the broad Halpha and Hbeta lines show shoulder-like structure in the wings, and enhanced peak, that may indicate a complex BLR. The rms-profiles of both lines seem to have the same shape and width of around 4200 km/s, indicating practically the same kinematics in the Halpha and Hbeta emitting regions. Measured time-lags between the continuum and Halpha and Hbeta broad-line variability are ~15 and 17 days, respectively, that in combination with the broad lines width allows us to estimate the NGC 3516 central black hole mass. We find that the black hole mass is 4.73+-1.40 x 10^7M_sun which is in agreement with previous estimates., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS

Some Type-1 active galactic nuclei (AGNs) are showing extremely asymmetric Balmer lines with the broad peak redshifted or blueshifted by thousands of km/s. These AGNs may be good candidates for supermassive binary black holes (SMBBHs). The complex line shapes can be very well due to the complex kinematics of the two broad line regions (BLRs). Therefore another methods should be applied to confirm the SMBBHs. One of them is spectropolarimetry. We rely on numerical modeling of the polarimetry of binary black holes systems since polarimetry is sensitive to geometry, in order to find specific influence of supermassive binary black hole (SMBBH) geometry and dynamics on polarized parameters across the broad line profiles. We apply our method to SMBBHs in which both components are assumed to be AGNs with distances at the sub-pc scale. We use a Monte Carlo radiative transfer code that simulates the geometry, dynamics and emission of a binary system where two black holes are getting increasingly closer. Each gravitational well is accompanied by its own BLR and the whole system is surrounded by an accretion flow from the distant torus. We examine the emission line deformation and predict the polarization that could be observed. We model broad line polarization for various BLR geometries with complex kinematics. We find that the presence of SMBBHs can produce complex polarization angle profiles and strongly affect the polarized and unpolarized line profiles. Depending on the phase of the SMBBH, the resulting double-peaked emission lines either show red or blue peak dominance, or both the peak can have the same intensity. In some cases, the whole line profile appears as a single Gaussian line, hiding the true nature of the source. Our results suggest that observations with the high resolution spectropolarimetry of optical broad emission lines could play an important role in detecting sub-pc SMBBHs., Comment: 20 pages, 24 pictures, accepted to A&A

Here we present the spectropolarimetric observations of a sample of 30 Type 1 AGNs and an analysis of the observed polarization in these AGNs. The observations have been performed with the 6-meter telescope of SAO RAS using the modified SCORPIO-2 spectropolarimeter. We measured the Stokes parameters for the continuum and the broad H$\alpha$ line and obtained the values of polarization degree and the angle of polarization. We found that equatorial scattering is dominant polarization mechanism in the sample, that allows us to use the observed polarization in the broad lines for determination of the central black hole (BH) masses and characteristics (the inclination and emissivity) of the Broad Line Region (BLR). We demonstrated that the recently proposed method of \cite{ap15} for BH mass measurement gives accurate BH masses which are in a good correlation with the stellar velocity dispersion, and consequently the masses determined by the polarization method can be used with calibration purposes. Additionally we found that the BLR in the sample of 30 AGN has an averaged inclination of $35^\circ\pm9^\circ$ (mostly between 20 and 40 degrees) and emissivity $\alpha\sim -0.57$ that is more flat than one expected for the classical accretion disc $\alpha\sim -0.75$., Comment: 19 pages, 15 figures, MNRAS accepted

It is well-known that the higher policyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) abundance, lower black hole mass, higher accretion rate and lower luminosities are among the major characteristics of Narrow-Line Seyfert galaxies (NLS1), when they are compared to Broad line Seyfert galaxies (BLS1). NLS1s may be normal Seyfert galaxies at an early stage of evolution, their black holes may still be growing and/or they could be special for some other reason. In this work we discuss the findings that NLS1s have most of line and continuum luminosities correlated with FWHM(H$\beta$), which may be the trace of their rapid black hole mass grow. BLS1 do not show such trends. We give an overview of the polarization in the broad lines of Active Galactic Nuclei (AGNs), where we can use the polarization angle for determination of the black hole masses (as given in [1]). Especially, we considered nine AGNs with strong optical Fe II lines in the spectra, where five of them are typical Narrow Line Sy1 (NLSy1) and four Broad Line Sy1 (BLSy1) AGNs . Active galactic nuclei (AGN) are one of the most luminous objects in the Universe, emitting powerful continuum and line emission across all wavelength bands. They represent an important link in the investigations of the galaxy evolution and cosmology. The resolving of the AGN inner structure is still a difficult task with current instruments, therefore the spectroscopy and spectropolarimetry are crucial tools to investigate these objects and their components, such as the properties of the supermassive black hole, the broad line region, and the dusty torus. The innermost regions in active galactic nuclei (AGNs) were not being spatially resolved so far but spectropolarimetry can provide us insight about their hidden physics and the geometry. From spectropolarimetric observations in broad emission lines and assuming equatorial scattering as a dominant polarization mechanism, it is possible to estimate the mass of supermassive black holes (SMBHs). We explore the possibilities and limits and to put constraints on the usage of the method for determining SMBH masses using polarization in broad emission lines by providing more in-depth theoretical modeling. Methods. We use the Monte Carlo radiative transfer code STOKES for exploring polarization of Type 1 AGNs. We model equatorial scattering using flared-disk geometry for a set of different SMBH masses assuming Thomson scattering. In addition to the Keplerian motion in the BLR, we also consider cases of additional radial inflows and vertical outflows. We model the profiles of polarization plane position angle, degree of polarization and total unpolarized line for different BLR geometries and different SMBH masses. Our modeling confirms that the method can be widely used for Type-1 AGNs when viewing inclinations are between 25 and 45 degrees. We show that the distance between the BLR and scattering region (SR) has a significant impact on the mass estimates and the best mass estimates are when the SR is situated at the distance 1.5-2.5 times larger than the outer BLR radius. Our models show that if Keplerian motion can be traced through the polarized line profile, then the direct estimation of the mass of the SMBH can be performed. When radial inflows or vertical outflows are present in the BLR, this method can be applied if velocities of the inflow/outflow are less than 500 km/s. One of the most important parameters in ionospheric plasma research also having a wide practical application in wireless satellite telecommunications is the total electron content (TEC) representing the columnal electron number density. The F region with high electron density provides the biggest contribution to TEC while the relatively weakly ionized plasma of the D region (60 km - 90 km above Earths surface) is often considered as a negligible cause of satellite signal disturbances. However, sudden intensive ionization processes like those induced by solar X ray flares can cause relative increases of electron density that are significantly larger in the D-region than in regions at higher altitudes. Therefore, one cannot exclude a priori the D region from investigations of ionospheric influences on propagation of electromagnetic signals emitted by satellites. We discuss here this problem which has not been sufficiently treated in literature so far. The obtained results are based on data collected from the D region monitoring by very low frequency radio waves and on vertical TEC calculations from the Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) signal analyses, and they show noticeable variations in the D region electron content (TECD) during activity of a solar X ray flare (it rises by a factor of 136 in the considered case) when TECD contribution to TEC can reach several percent and which cannot be neglected in practical applications like global positioning procedures by satellites.

We present the results of the long-term (20-year period, from 1996 to 2015) optical spectral monitoring of the Seyfert 1 galaxy NGC 7469. The variation in the light-curves of the broad He II {\lambda}4686A H{\beta} and H{\alpha} lines, and the continuum at 5100A and 6300A have been explored. The maximum of activity was in 1998, and the variability in the continuum and lines seems to have two periods of around 1200 and 2600 days, however these periodicities should be taken with caution because of the red-noise. Beside these periods, there are several short-term (1-5 days) flare-like events in the light-curves. There are good correlations between the continuum fluxes and H{\alpha} and H{\beta} line fluxes, but significantly smaller correlation between the He II and continuum. We found that the time-lags between the continuum and broad lines are different for H{\beta} (~20 l.d.) and H{\alpha} (~3 l.d.), and that He II also has a smaller lag (~2-3 l.d.). The H{\alpha} and H{\beta} line profiles show a slight red asymmetry, and the broad line profiles did not changed in the 20-year period. Using the lags and widths of H{\alpha} and H{\beta} we estimated the central black hole mass and found that it is ~(1-6)x$10^7 M_{\odot}$, which is in agreement with previous reverberation estimates., Comment: Accepted in Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society

We present an analysis of 43 years (1972 to 2015) of spectroscopic observations of the Seyfert 1 galaxy NGC 5548. This includes 12 years of new unpublished observations (2003 to 2015). We compiled about 1600 H$\beta$ spectra and analyzed the long-term spectral variations of the 5100 \AA\ continuum and the H$\beta$ line. Our analysis is based on standard procedures including the Lomb-Scargle method, which is known to be rather limited to such heterogeneous data sets, and new method developed specifically for this project that is more robust and reveals a $\sim$5700 day periodicity in the continuum light curve, the H$\beta$ light curve and the radial velocity curve of the red wing of the H$\beta$ line. The data are consistent with orbital motion inside the broad emission line region of the source. We discuss several possible mechanisms that can explain this periodicity, including orbiting dusty and dust-free clouds, a binary black hole system, tidal disruption events, and the effect of an orbiting star periodically passing through an accretion disc., Comment: Accepted in ApJS, 64 pages, 10 figures and 4 tables

We report the results of the first long-term (1990-2014) optical spectro-photometric monitoring of a binary black hole candidate QSO E1821+643, a low-redshift high-luminosity radio-quiet quasar. In the monitored period the continua and H$\gamma$ fluxes changed for around two times, while the H$\beta$ flux changed around 1.4 times. We found the periodical variations in the photometric flux with the periods of 1200, 1850 and 4000 days, and 4500 days periodicity in the spectroscopic variations. However, the periodicity of 4000-4500 days covers only one cycle of variation and should be confirmed with a longer monitoring campaign. There is an indication of the period around 1300 days in the spectroscopic light curves, but with small significance level, while the 1850 days period could not be clearly identified in the spectroscopic light curves. The line profiles have not significantly changed, showing an important red asymmetry and broad line peak redshifted around +1000 km s$^{-1}$. However, H$\beta$ shows broader mean profile and has a larger time-lag ($\tau\sim120$ days) than H$\gamma$ ($\tau\sim60$ days). We estimate that the mass of the black hole is $\sim2.6\times10^9\rm M_\odot$. The obtained results are discussed in the frame of the binary black hole hypothesis. To explain the periodicity in the flux variability and high redshift of broad lines we discuss a scenario where dense gas-rich cloudy-like structures are orbiting around a recoiling black hole., Comment: Accepted in ApJS

Here we present a short overview and main results of our investigations of several effects which can induce shifts in the broad Fe K$\alpha$ line emitted from relativistic accretion disks around single and binary supermassive black holes. We used numerical simulations based on ray-tracing method in the Kerr metric to study the role of classical Doppler shift, special relativistic transverse Doppler shift and Doppler beaming, general relativistic gravitational redshift, and perturbations of the disk emissivity in the formation of the observed Fe K$\alpha$ line profiles. Besides, we also investigated whether the observed line profiles from the binary systems of supermassive black holes could be affected by the Doppler shifts due to dynamics of such systems. The presented results demonstrate that all these effects could have a significant influence on the observed profiles of the broad Fe K$\alpha$ line emitted from relativistic accretion disks around single and binary supermassive black holes., Comment: 9 pages, 5 figures, 1 table. The spectral variability of active galactic nuclei (AGN) is one of their key features that enables us to study in more details the structure of AGN emitting regions. Especially, the broad line profiles, that vary both in flux and shape, give us invaluable information about the kinematics and geometry of the broad line region (BLR) where these lines are originating from. We give here a comparative review of the line shape variability in a sample of five type 1 AGN, those with broad emission lines in their spectra, of the data obtained from the international long-term optical monitoring campaign coordinated by the Special Astrophysical Observatory of the Russian Academy of Science. The main aim of this campaign is to study the physics and kinematics of the BLR on a uniform data set, focusing on the problems of the photoionization heating of the BLR and its geometry, where in this paper we give for a first time a comparative analysis of the variabilty of five type 1 AGN, discussing their complex BLR physics and geometry in the framework of the estimates of the supermassive black hole mass in AGN., Comment: Accepted in Journal of Astrophysics and Astronomy, Springer

Here we present the spectropolarimetric observations of the radio loud active galaxy 3C 390.3 in the period 2009-2014 (24 epochs). The galaxy has been observed with the 6-meter telescope of SAO RAS using the SCORPIO spectropolarimeter. We explore the variability and lags in the polarized light of the continuum and broad H$\alpha$ line. We give the Stokes parameters $Q, U$, degree of linear polarization $P$ and the position angle of the polarization plane, $\varphi$, for 24 epochs. We find a small lag~(10-40 days) between the unpolarized and polarized continuum that is significantly smaller than the estimated lags for the unpolarized broad emission lines (lag(H$\alpha$)$\sim$138-186 and lag(H$\beta$)$\sim$60-79 days). This shows that the region of the variable polarized continuum is significantly smaller than the broad line region, indicating that a part of the polarized continuum is coming from the jet. The lag of the polarized light in the H$\alpha$ line (89-156 days) indicates an additional component to the disc one that has an outflowing velocity of $\sim$-1200 km s$^{-1}$. We investigate a long-term (26 years, from 1987 to 2013) variability in the broad spectral line properties of the radio galaxy Arp 102B, an active galaxy with broad double-peaked emission lines. We use observations presented in Paper I (Shapovalova et al. 2013) in the period from 1987 to 2011, and a new set of observations performed in 2012--2013. To explore the BLR geometry, and clarify some contradictions about the nature of the BLR in Arp 102B we explore variations in the H$\alpha$ and H$\beta$ line parameters during the monitored period. We fit the broad lines with three broad Gaussian functions finding the positions and intensities of the blue and red peaks in H$\alpha$ and H$\beta$. Additionally we fit averaged line profiles with the disc model. We find that the broad line profiles are double-peaked and have not been changed significantly in shapes, beside an additional small peak that, from time to time can be seen in the blue part of the H$\alpha$ line. The positions of the blue and red peaks { have not changed significantly during the monitored period. The H$\beta$ line is broader than H$\alpha$ line in the monitored period. The disc model is able to reproduce the H$\beta$ and H$\alpha$ broad line profiles, however, observed variability in the line parameters are not in a good agreement with the emission disc hypothesis. It seems that the BLR of Arp 102B has a disc-like geometry, but the role of an outflow can also play an important role in observed variation of the broad line properties., Comment: 17 pages, Accepted for publication in A&A

We investigated the efficiency of estimating characteristics of stellar populations (SP) and Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) emission using ULySS code. To analyse simultaneously AGN and SP components in the integrated spectrum of Type 2 active galaxies, we modelled the featureless continuum (FC) and emission lines, and we used PEGASE.HR stellar population models provided by ULySS. In order to validate the method, we simulated over 7000 integrated spectra of Seyfert 2 galaxies. Spectra were generated using different characteristics of the featureless AGN continuum, signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), spectral ranges, properties of emission lines and single stellar population (SSP) model whose initial mass function (IMF) and abundance pattern is similar to the solar neighbourhood. Simulated spectra were fitted with ULySS to evaluate the ability of the method to extract SP and AGN properties. We found that the analysis with ULySS can efficiently restore the characteristics of SP in spectra of Seyfert 2 AGNs, where signal-to-noise ratio is higher than 20, and where SP contributes with more than 10% to the total flux. Degeneracies between AGN and SP parameters increase with increasing the AGN continuum fraction, which points out the importance of simultaneous fitting of the FC and SP contributions., Comment: 28 pages, 8 figures, appears in Advances in Space Research (2014)

We used the Z-transformed Discrete Correlation Function (ZDCF) and the Stochastic Process Estimation for AGN Reverberation (SPEAR) methods for the time series analysis of the continuum and the H${\alpha}$ and H${\beta}$ line fluxes of a sample of well known type 1 active galactic nuclei (AGNs): Arp 102B, 3C 390.3, NGC 5548, and NGC 4051, where the first two objects are showing double-peaked emission line profiles. The aim of this work is to compare the time lag measurements from these two methods, and check if there is a connection with other emission line properties. We found that the obtained time lags from H$\beta$ are larger than those derived from the H$\alpha$ analysis for Arp 102B, 3C 390.3 and NGC 5548. This may indicate that the H$\beta$ line originates at larger radii in these objects. Moreover, we found that the ZDCF and SPEAR time lags are highly correlated ($r \sim0.87$), and that the error ranges of both ZDCF and SPEAR time lags are correlated with the FWHM of used emission lines ($r\sim 0.7$). This increases the uncertainty of the black hole mass estimates using the virial theorem for AGNs with broader lines., Comment: Accepted for publication in Advances in Space Research

It is becoming clear that we can define two different types of nearby AGN belonging to the Seyfert 1 class (S1), on the basis of the match of the intensities of their Broad Balmer Lines (BBL) with the Boltzmann Plots (BP). These two types of S1 galaxies, that we call BP-S1 and NoBP-S1, are characterized, in first approximation, by Broad Line Regions (BLR) with different structural and physical properties. In this communication, we show that these features can be well pointed out by a multi-wavelength analysis of the continuum and of the broad recombination Hydrogen lines, that we carry out on a sample of objects detected at optical and X-ray frequencies. The investigation is addressed to verify whether BP-S1 are the ideal candidates for the study of the kinematical and structural properties of the BLR, in order to derive reliable estimates of the mass of their central engine and to constrain the properties of their nuclear continuum spectrum., Comment: 26 pages, 4 figures (1 multi-paged). Here we present an analysis of spectro-polarimetric observations of type 1.5 AGN Mrk 6, performed with 6m telescope SAO RAN in 12 epochs (2010 -- 2013). Additionally, the inter-stellar mater (ISM) polarization has been observed and its contribution to the AGN spectral polarization is taken into account. We measured Stokes parameters and determined the polarization parameters in 12 spectra with and without correction for the ISM polarization. We estimated the time lag between the unpolarized and polarized continuum flux variation of about ~2 days, that indicates a compact scattering region which contributes to the polarized continuum variability. The polarization in H{\alpha} is complex, showing three prominent components in the BLR, one redshifted around +3000 km/s that corresponds to the red shoulder in H{\alpha}, and two blue-shifted around -2000 km/s and -6000 km/s. We found that the ISM polarization has a very significant influence on the measured AGN polarization parameters. After correcting the observations for the ISM polarization we were able to detect the Keplerian motion in the BLR. We give a new method for the black hole mass estimation using spectro-polarimetric observation in the line profile, finding the black hole mass in Mrk 6 of $M_{BH} \sim 1.53 \cdot 10^8 M_{\odot}$, that is in a good agreement with reverberation estimates., Comment: Version submitted to MNRAS, after minor revision

Here we present results of the long-term (1987-2010) optical spectral monitoring of the broad line radio galaxy Arp 102B, a prototype of active galactic nuclei with the double-peaked broad emission lines, usually assumed to be emitted from an accretion disk. To explore the structure of the broad line region (BLR), we analyze the light curves of the broad H\alpha and H\beta lines and the continuum flux. We aim to estimate the dimensions of the broad-line emitting regions and the mass of the central black hole. We use the CCF to find lags between the lines and continuum variations. We investigate in more details the correlation between line and continuum fluxes, moreover we explore periodical variations of the red-to-blue line flux ratio using Lomb-Scargle periodograms. The line and continuum light curves show several flare-like events. The fluxes in lines and in the continuum are not showing a big change (around 20%) during the monitoring period. We found a small correlation between the line and continuum flux variation, that may indicate that variation in lines has weak connection with the variation of the central photoionization source. In spite of a low line-continuum correlation, using several methods, we estimated a time lag for H\beta around 20 days. The correlation between the H\beta and H\alpha flux variation is significantly higher than between lines and continuum. During the monitoring period, the H\beta and H\alpha lines show double-peaked profiles and we found an indication for a periodical oscillation in the red-to-blue flux ratio of the H\alpha line. The estimated mass of the central black hole is \sim 1.1 \times 10^8 M\odot that is in an agreement with the mass estimated from the M-\sigma* relation., Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A

One of the most intriguing scenarios proposed to explain how active galactic nuclei are triggered involves the existence of a supermassive binary black hole system in their cores. Here we present an observational evidence for the first spectroscopically resolved sub-parsec orbit of a such system in the core of Seyfert galaxy NGC 4151. Using a method similar to those typically applied for spectroscopic binary stars we obtained radial velocity curves of the supermassive binary system, from which we calculated orbital elements and made estimates about the masses of components. Our analysis shows that periodic variations in the light and radial velocity curves can be accounted for an eccentric, sub-parsec Keplerian orbit of a 15.9-year period. The flux maximum in the lightcurve correspond to the approaching phase of a secondary component towards the observer. According to the obtained results we speculate that the periodic variations in the observed H{\alpha} line shape and flux are due to shock waves generated by the supersonic motion of the components through the surrounding medium. Given the large observational effort needed to reveal this spectroscopically resolved binary orbital motion we suggest that many such systems may exist in similar objects even if they are hard to find. We present the results of a long-term (1999--2010) spectral optical monitoring campaign of the active galactic nucleus (AGN) Ark 564, which shows a strong Fe II line emission in the optical. This AGN is a narrow line Seyfert 1 (NLS1) galaxies, a group of AGNs with specific spectral characteristics. We analyze the light curves of the permitted Ha, Hb, optical Fe II line fluxes, and the continuum flux in order to search for a time lag between them. Additionally, in order to estimate the contribution of iron lines from different multiplets, we fit the Hb and Fe II lines with a sum of Gaussian components. We found that during the monitoring period the spectral variation (F_max/F_min) of Ark 564 was between 1.5 for Ha to 1.8 for the Fe II lines. The correlation between the Fe II and Hb flux variations is of higher significance than that of Ha and Hb (whose correlation is almost absent). The permitted-line profiles are Lorentzian-like, and did not change shape during the monitoring period. We investigated, in detail, the optical Fe II emission and found different degrees of correlation between the Fe II emission arising from different spectral multiplets and the continuum flux. The relatively weak and different degrees of correlations between permitted lines and continuum fluxes indicate a rather complex source of ionization of the broad line emission region., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJS

We analyze the ratios of the broad hydrogen Balmer emission lines (from H\alpha to H\epsilon) in the context of estimating the physical conditions in the broad line region (BLR) of active galactic nuclei (AGN). The Balmer emission lines are obtained in three ways: i) using photoionization models obtained by a spectral synthesis code CLOUDY; ii) calculated using the recombination theory for hydrogenic ions; iii) measured from the sample of observed spectra taken from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey database. We investigate the Balmer line ratios in the frame of the so called Boltzmann-plot (BP), analyzing physical conditions of the emitting plasma for which we could use the BP method. The BP considers the ratio of Balmer lines normalized to the atomic data of the corresponding line transition, and is in that way different from the Balmer decrement. We found that for a certain range of thermodynamic parameters, there are objects that follow the BP. We present preliminary results of the long term spectral monitoring of two active galactic nuclei with different broad line shapes: Ark 564 and Arp 102B. Ark 564 is a bright nearby narrow line Syfert 1 (NLS1) galaxy with relatively narrow permitted optical emission lines and a high FeII/H${\beta}$ ratio, while Arp 102B is a nearby broad-line radio galaxy with broad double-peaked Balmer emission lines. In this contribution we report on the study of the optical emission lines and X-ray spectra of a sample of Type 1 AGNs, collected at the Sloan Digital Sky Survey database and observed by the XMM Newton satellite. Exploiting the different instruments carried onboard XMM, we identify the spectral components of the soft and hard energy bands (in the range from 0.3 keV up to 10 keV). The properties of the X-ray continuum and of the Fe Kalpha line feature are investigated in relation to the optical broad emission line profiles and intensity ratios. We report the extraordinary gamma-ray activity (E>100 MeV) of the gravitationally lensed blazar PKS 1830-211 (z=2.507) detected by AGILE between October and November 2010. The source experienced on October 14 a flux increase of a factor of ~ 12 with respect to its average value and kept brightest at this flux level (~ 500 x 10^{-8} ph cm^-2 sec^-1) for about 4 days. The 1-month gamma-ray light curve across the flare showed a mean flux F(E>100 MeV)= 200 x 10^{-8} ph cm^-2 sec^-1, which resulted in an enhancement by a factor of 4 with respect to the average value. Following the gamma-ray flare, the source was observed in NIR-Optical energy bands at the Cerro Tololo Inter-American Observatory and in X-rays by Swift/XRT and INTEGRAL/IBIS. The main result of these multifrequency observations is that the large variability observed in gamma-rays has not a significant counterpart at lower frequencies: no variation greater than a factor of ~ 1.5 resulted in NIR and X-ray energy bands. PKS 1830-211 is then a good "gamma-ray only flaring" blazar showing substantial variability only above 10-100 MeV. Narrow Line Seyfert 1 galaxies represent a distinct category in the larger family of Type 1 Active Galactic Nuclei. The occurrence of emission line profiles not broader than 2000 km/s, combined with luminosity estimates comparable to those of their broad line emitting analogues, suggests that some extreme property is characterizing the fueling of their central engines. Two hypotheses are more commonly considered: on the one hand, it was suggested that the peculiar features of NLS1s might be interpreted as the consequence of a nearly pole-on view over a geometrically flattened source; on the other, there are arguments favoring the interpretation of a relatively low mass black hole, accreting at very high rates. Both explanations provide advantages and drawbacks, but, in spite of the different assumed physics, they agree in identifying NLS1s as the crucial test ground for our understanding of the Broad Line Region structure and dynamics in AGN. Here we report the results obtained investigating asynchronous optical and X-ray spectroscopic observations, respectively extracted from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey and the XMM-Newton science archives, of a sample of both broad and narrow line emitting Seyfert 1 galaxies. Exploiting data collected by the different instruments carried on board XMM, we try to identify the various components which sum up in the observed broad band spectra of the two classes. We discuss the relation that thermal, non-thermal, line emission and broad band absorption components of the X-ray source show with the optical emission line profiles, as interpreted in the framework of a composite Broad Emission Line Region structural model., Comment: 15 pages, 5 figures (Fig. 4 with colors). A study of the variability of the broad emission-line parameters of 3C390.3, an active galaxy with the double-peaked emission-line profiles, is presented. We give a detail analysis of variation in the broad Ha and Hb profiles, the ratios, and the Balmer decrement of different line segments. Studying the variability of the line profiles we explore the disk structure, that is assumed to emit the broad double-peaked Ha and Hb emission lines. We divided the observed spectra in two periods (before and after the outburst in 2002) and analyzed separately the variation in these two periods. First we analyzed the spectral emission-line profiles of Ha and Hb, measuring the peak positions. Then, we divided lines into several segments, and we measured the line-segment fluxes. The Balmer decrement variation for total Ha and Hb fluxes, as well as for the line segments has been investigated and discussed. We modeled the line parameters variation using an accretion disk model. We compared the variability in the observed line parameters with the disk model predictions and found that the variation in line profiles and in line segments corresponds to the emission of a disk-like BLR. But, also there is probably one additional emission component that contributes to the Ha and Hb line center. We found that the variation in the line profiles is caused by the variation in the parameters of the disk-like BLR, first of all in the inner (outer) radius which can well explain the line parameter variations in the Period I. The Balmer decrement across the line profile has a bell-like shape, and it is affected not only by physical processes in the disk, but also by different emitting disk dimension of the Ha and Hb line. The geometry of the BLR of 3C390.3 seems to be very complex, and inflows/outflows might be present, but it is evident that the broad line region with disk-like geometry has dominant emission., Comment: Accepted for publication by A&A

We report the new spectroscopic observations of the gravitational lens RXJ 021+4529 with the multi-mode focal reducer SCORPIO of the SAO RAS 6-m telescope. The new spectral observations were compared with the previously observed spectra of components A and B of RXJ 0921+4529, i.e. the same components observed in different epochs. We found a significant difference in the spectrum between the components that cannot be explained with microlensing and/or spectral variation. We conclude that RXJ 0921+4529 is a binary quasar system, where redshifts of quasars A and B are 1.6535 +/- 0.0005 and 1.6625 +/- 0.0015, respectively., Comment: 6 pages, 5 figures, accepted for publication in The Astrophysical Journal Letters

Here we show that in the case when double peaked emission lines originate from outer parts of accretion disk, their variability could be caused by perturbations in the disk emissivity. In order to test this hypothesis, we introduced a model of disk perturbing region in the form of a single bright spot (or flare) by a modification of the power law disk emissivity in appropriate way. The disk emission was then analyzed using numerical simulations based on ray-tracing method in Kerr metric and the corresponding simulated line profiles were obtained. We applied this model to the observed H-beta line profiles of 3C 390.3 (observed in the period 1995-1999), and estimated the parameters of both, accretion disk and perturbing region. Our results show that two large amplitude outbursts of the H-beta line observed in 3C 390.3 could be explained by successive occurrences of two bright spots on approaching side of the disk. These bright spots are either moving, originating in the inner regions of the disk and spiralling outwards by crossing small distances during the period of several years, or stationary. Here we present the results of the long-term (1995-2007) spectral monitoring of the broad line radio galaxy \object{3C~390.3}, a well known AGN with the double peaked broad emission lines, usually assumed to be emitted from an accretion disk. To explore dimensions and structure of the BLR, we analyze the light curves of the broad H$\alpha$ and H$\beta$ line fluxes and the continuum flux. In order to find changes in the BLR, we analyze the H$\alpha$ and H$\beta$ line profiles, as well as the change in the line profiles during the monitoring period. First we try to find a periodicity in the continuum and H$\beta$ light curves, finding that there is a good chance for quasi-periodical oscillations. Using the line shapes and their characteristics (as e.g. peaks separation and their intensity ratio, or FWHM) of broad H$\beta$ and H$\alpha$ lines, we discuss the structure of the BLR. Also, we cross-correlate the continuum flux with H$\beta$ and H$\alpha$ lines to find dimensions of the BLR. We found that during the monitoring period the broad emission component of the H$\alpha$ and H$\beta$ lines, and the continuum flux varied by a factor of $\approx $4-5. Also, we detected different structure in the line profiles of H$\alpha$ and H$\beta$. It seems that an additional central component is present and superposed to the disk emission. In the period of high activity (after 2002), H$\beta$ became broader than H$\alpha$ and red wing of H$\beta$ was higher than the one of H$\alpha$. We found time lags of $\sim$95 days between the continuum and H$\beta$ flux, and about 120 days between the continuum and H$\alpha$ flux. Variation in the line profiles, as well as correlation between the line and continuum flux during the monitoring period is in the favor of the disk origin of the broad lines with the possible contribution of some additional region and/or some kind of perturbation in the disk., Comment: 32 pages, accepted to A&A, typos corrected

Results of the long-term (11 years, from 1996 to 2006) H$\alpha$ and H$\beta$ line variations of the active galactic nucleus of NGC 4151 are presented. High quality spectra (S/N>50 and R~8A) of H$\alpha$ and H$\beta$ were investigated. We analyzed line profile variations during monitoring period. Comparing the line profiles of H$\alpha$ and H$\beta$, we studied different details (bumps, absorption features) in the line profiles. The variations of the different H$\alpha$ and H$\beta$ line profile segments have been investigated. Also, we analyzed the Balmer decrement for whole line and for line segments. We found that the line profiles were strongly changing during the monitoring period, showing blue and red asymmetries. This indicates a complex BLR geometry of NGC 4151 with, at least, three kinematically distinct regions: one that contributes to the blue line wing, one to the line core and one to the red line wing. Such variation can be caused by an accelerating outflow starting very close to the black hole, where the red part may come from the region {closer to the black hole than the blue part, which is coming} from the region having the highest outflow velocities. Taking into account the fact that the BLR of NGC 4151 has a complex geometry (probably affected by an outflow) and that a portion of the broad line emission seems to have not a pure photoionization origin, one can ask the question whether the study of the BLR by reverberation mapping may be valid in the case of this galaxy., Comment: 24 pages, 18 figures, accepted for publications in A&A

In this work we investigate the properties of the broad emission line components in the Balmer series of a sample of Type 1 Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN). Using the Boltzmann Plot method as a diagnostic tool for physical conditions in the plasma, we detect a relationship among the kinematical and thermo-dynamical properties of these objects. In order to further clarify the influence of the central engines on the surrounding material, we look for signatures of structure in the broad line emitting regions, that could affect the optical domain of the observed spectra. Using a combination of line profile analysis and kinematical modeling of the emitting plasma, we study how the emission line broadening functions are influenced by different structural configurations. The observed profiles are consistent with flattened structures seen at quite low inclinations, typically smaller than 20 degrees. Since this result is in good agreement with some independent observations at radio frequencies, we apply a new formalism to study the properties of AGN central engines., Comment: 8 pages, 11 figures. The Broad Emission Lines (BELs) in spectra of type 1 Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) can be very complex, indicating a complex Broad Line Region (BLR) geometry. According to the standard unification model one can expect an accretion disk around a supermassive black hole in all AGN. Therefore, a disk geometry is expected in the BLR. However, a small fraction of BELs show double-peaked profiles which indicate the disk geometry. Here, we discuss a two-component model, assuming an emission from the accretion disk and one additional emission from surrounding region. We compared the modeled BELs with observed ones (mostly broad H$\alpha$ and H$\beta$ profiles) finding that the model can well describe single-peaked and double-peaked observed broad line profiles., Comment: accepted: New Astronomy Reviews

We study the disk emission component hidden in the single-peaked Broad Emission Lines (BELs) of Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN). We compare the observed broad lines from a sample of 90 Seyfert 1 spectra taken from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey with simulated line profiles. We consider a two-component Broad Line Region (BLR) model where an accretion disk and a surrounding non-disk region with isotropic cloud velocities generate the simulated BEL profiles. The analysis is mainly based in measurements of the full widths (at 10%, 20% and 30% of the maximum intensity) and of the asymmetries of the line profiles. Comparing these parameters for the simulated and observed H$\alpha$ broad lines, we {found} that the hidden disk emission {may} be present in BELs even if the characteristic {of two peaked line profiles is} absent. For the available sample of objects (Seyfert 1 galaxies with single-peaked BELs), our study indicates that, {in the case of the hidden disk emission in single peaked broad line profiles}, the disk inclination tends to be small (mostly $i<25^\circ$) and that the contribution of the disk emission to the total flux should be smaller than the contribution of the surrounding region., Comment: 18 Figures, 1 Table, MNRAS-accepted.
