- Abstract
The Center for Invention and Development has compiled an annotated bibliography which identifies sources and sets parameters in the use of games and simulation in the classroom. The introduction attempts to clarify the difference between simulation and gaming and the relative position of each in teacher education. There are 134 items which cover general references, six journals and newsletters, and 23 simulations and games. Most items have been published or developed since 1960. The source of a large percentage of the references are documents from Resources in Education (RIE) and Current Index to Journals in Education (CIJE). (Author/DS)

- Abstract
In this policy road map, Jobs for the Future (JFF) offers common-sense, field-tested policy solutions that state and federal lawmakers can enact today to begin reengineering education and workforce systems toward the vision and core principles of No Dead Ends. These policy recommendations are organized under four key priority areas: (1) Empower people with data, guidance, and resources that enable them to navigate their work and learning journeys and flourish throughout their lives; (2) Recognize everyone's skills, knowledge, and expertise, regardless of when and where their learning and development experiences occur; (3) Blur the lines between learning and work systems to foster common purpose among educators and employers and to smooth pathways to economic advancement; and (4) Help people get ahead during times of economic uncertainty and personal adversity.

The spectral energy distribution (SED) of observed stars in wide-field images is crucial for chromatic point spread function (PSF) modelling methods, which use unresolved stars as integrated spectral samples of the PSF across the field of view. This is particularly important for weak gravitational lensing studies, where precise PSF modelling is essential to get accurate shear measurements. Previous research has demonstrated that the SED of stars can be inferred from low-resolution observations using machine-learning classification algorithms. However, a degeneracy exists between the PSF size, which can vary significantly across the field of view, and the spectral type of stars, leading to strong limitations of such methods. We propose a new SED classification method that incorporates stellar spectral information by using a preliminary PSF model, thereby breaking this degeneracy and enhancing the classification accuracy. Our method involves calculating a set of similarity features between an observed star and a preliminary PSF model at different wavelengths and applying a support vector machine to these similarity features to classify the observed star into a specific stellar class. The proposed approach achieves a 91\% top-two accuracy, surpassing machine-learning methods that do not consider the spectral variation of the PSF. Additionally, we examined the impact of PSF modelling errors on the spectral classification accuracy.

We investigate two related questions regarding the $\lambda$-invariants of Mazur--Tate elements of elliptic curves defined over the field of rational numbers. At additive primes, we explain their growth and how these invariants relate to other better understood invariants depending on the potential reduction type. At good ordinary primes dividing the denominator of the normalised $L$-value of the elliptic curve, we prove that the $\lambda$-invariant grows as $p^n-1$, which is the maximum value. In addition, we give examples and a conjecture for the additive potentially supersingular case, supported by computational data from Sage in this setting.

- Abstract
Student debt has exploded over the past several decades, rising to over $1.7 trillion. Federal student loans represent over 90% of student loan balances, with private financing making up the remainder. Research has shown that the negative impact of student debt has not been distributed equally across different demographics, with Black borrowers disproportionately feeling the adverse effects of student debt. Yet to date, little research has explored how monthly repayment burdens-- defined as the borrower's monthly payment as a share of their earnings--vary across different demographic groups or how that may relate to the specific fixed-payment structure of student loans. This study uses the 2019 Survey of Consumer Finances (SCF), a comprehensive national survey of U.S. families' financial lives, to identify differences in monthly repayment burdens across racial groups. The study found that, on average, Black borrowers pay a greater percentage of their monthly income toward student loans than white borrowers.

Viral lower respiratory tract infection (vLRTI) is a leading cause of hospitalization and death in children worldwide. Despite this, no studies have employed proteomics to characterize host immune responses to severe pediatric vLRTI in both the lower airway and systemic circulation. To address this gap, gain insights into vLRTI pathophysiology, and test a novel diagnostic approach, we assayed 1,305 proteins in tracheal aspirate (TA) and plasma from 62 critically ill children using SomaScan. We performed differential expression (DE) and pathway analyses comparing vLRTI (n = 40) to controls with non-infectious acute respiratory failure (n = 22), developed a diagnostic classifier using LASSO regression, and analyzed matched TA and plasma samples. We further investigated the impact of viral load and bacterial coinfection on the proteome. The TA signature of vLRTI was characterized by 200 DE proteins (Padj

- Abstract
Transcription factors are frequent cancer driver genes, exhibiting noted specificity based on the precise cell of origin. We demonstrate that ZIC1 exhibits loss-of-function (LOF) somatic events in group 4 (G4) medulloblastoma through recurrent point mutations, subchromosomal deletions and mono-allelic epigenetic repression (60% of G4 medulloblastoma). In contrast, highly similar SHH medulloblastoma exhibits distinct and diametrically opposed gain-of-function mutations and copy number gains (20% of SHH medulloblastoma). Overexpression of ZIC1 suppresses the growth of group 3 medulloblastoma models, whereas it promotes the proliferation of SHH medulloblastoma precursor cells. SHH medulloblastoma ZIC1 mutants show increased activity versus wild-type ZIC1, whereas G4 medulloblastoma ZIC1 mutants exhibit LOF phenotypes. Distinct ZIC1 mutations affect cells of the rhombic lip in diametrically opposed ways, suggesting that ZIC1 is a critical developmental transcriptional regulator in both the normal and transformed rhombic lip and identifying ZIC1 as an exquisitely context-dependent driver gene in medulloblastoma.

Plastic pollution threatens almost every ecosystem in the world. Critically, many animals consume plastic, in part because plastic particles often look or smell like food. Plastic ingestion is thus an evolutionary trap, a phenomenon that occurs when cues are decoupled from their previously associated high fitness outcomes. Theory predicts that dominance hierarchies could dictate individual responses to evolutionary traps across social environments, but the social dimension of evolutionary trap responses has rarely been investigated. We tested how variation in group size influences the formation of dominance relationships and, in turn, how these dominance relationships drive differences in foraging behavior in Western mosquitofish (Gambusia affinis). This included foraging for a variety of familiar and novel food-like items, including microplastics. Overall, dominant individuals were often the first to sample food and had higher bite rates than subordinates, including when foraging for microplastics. Importantly, how dominance affected foraging behavior depended on group size and on whether groups were presented with familiar or novel foods. Furthermore, individuals were consistent in their foraging behavior across trials with different group sizes, indicating the formation of stable social roles. These results suggest that predicting the ecological and evolutionary consequences of evolutionary traps will require an understanding of how social structures influence trap susceptibility.

This study investigates baseline differences in couples enrolled in the "It Takes Two" HIV prevention intervention for transgender women and their partners, comparing in-person participation pre-COVID-19 and digital participation during the pandemic. Among 52 couples (40% in-person, 60% digital), bivariate analyses revealed that in-person participants were more likely to be African American, have cisgender male partners, report higher unemployment, incarceration histories, greater relationship stigma, and lower relationship quality. The findings highlight the limitations of digital modalities in engaging transgender women of color and those with structural vulnerabilities. The study emphasizes that reliance on digital methods in HIV research jeopardizes the inclusion of those lacking technological access and literacy, especially communities disproportionately impacted by HIV. Researchers must incorporate hybrid or in-person options and engage communities to ensure equity and inclusion, thus overcoming barriers and ensuring comprehensive population reach in HIV prevention studies.

For an atomic domain $D$, the $elasticity$ $\rho(D)$ of $D$ is defined as $\sup\{r/s: \pi_1\cdots \pi_r = \rho_1 \cdots \rho_s,~ \text{where each $\pi_i, \rho_j$ is irreducible}\}$; the elasticity provides a concrete measure of the failure of unique factorization in $D$. Fix a quadratic number field $K$ with discriminant $\Delta_K$, and for each positive integer $f$, let $\mathcal{O}_f = \mathbb{Z} + f\mathcal{O}_K$ denote the order of conductor $f$ in $K$. Results of Halter-Koch imply that $\mathcal{O}_f$ has finite elasticity precisely when $f$ is $\textit{split-free}$, meaning not divisible by any rational prime $p$ with $(\Delta_K/p)=1$. When $K$ is imaginary, we show that for almost all split-free $f$, \[ \rho(\mathcal{O}_f) = f/(\log{f})^{\frac{1}{2}\log\log\log{f} + \frac{1}{2}C_K+o(1)}, \] for a constant $C_K$ depending on $K$. When $K$ is real, we prove under the assumption of the Generalized Riemann Hypothesis that \[ \rho(\mathcal{O}_f)= (\log{f})^{\frac12 +o(1)} \] for almost all split-free $f$. Underlying these estimates are new statistical theorems about class groups of orders in quadratic fields, whose proofs borrow ideas from investigations of Erd\H{o}s, Hooley, Li, Pomerance, Schmutz, and others into the multiplicative groups $(\mathbb{Z}/m\mathbb{Z})^\times$. One novelty of the argument is the development of a weighted version of the Tur\'{a}n--Kubilius inequality to handle a variety of sums over split-free integers., Comment: 55 pages; submitted

Some quantum algorithms have "quantum speedups": improved time complexity as compared with the best-known classical algorithms for solving the same tasks. Can we understand what fuels these speedups from an entropic perspective? Information theory gives us a multitude of metrics we might choose from to measure how fundamentally 'quantum' is the behavior of a quantum computer running an algorithm. The entanglement entropies for subsystems of a quantum state can be analyzed for subsystems of qubits in a quantum computer throughout the running of an algorithm. Here, a framework for making this entropic analysis is constructed, and performed on a selection of quantum circuits implementing known fast quantum algorithms and subroutines: Grover search, the quantum Fourier transform, and phase estimation. Our results are largely unsatisfactory: known entropy inequalities do not suffice to identify the presence or absence of quantum speedups. Although we know our algorithms must have quantum "magic", the Ingleton inequality, which holds for all entropies of subsystems of stabilizer states, is not violated in any of our examples. In some cases, however, monogamy of mutual information, which is obeyed for product states but violated for highly entangled bipartite states such as the $GHZ$ states, fails at some point in the course of our quantum circuits., Comment: 18 pages, 11 figures; Submitted for QIP 2025, comments welcome

This paper introduces a novel track-length extension fitting algorithm for measuring the kinetic energies of inelastically interacting particles in liquid argon time projection chambers (LArTPCs). The algorithm finds the most probable offset in track length for a track-like object by comparing the measured ionization density as a function of position with a theoretical prediction of the energy loss as a function of the energy, including models of electron recombination and detector response. The algorithm can be used to measure the energies of particles that interact before they stop, such as charged pions that are absorbed by argon nuclei. The algorithm's energy measurement resolutions and fractional biases are presented as functions of particle kinetic energy and number of track hits using samples of stopping secondary charged pions in data collected by the ProtoDUNE-SP detector, and also in a detailed simulation. Additional studies describe the impact of the dE/dx model on energy measurement performance. The method described in this paper to characterize the energy measurement performance can be repeated in any LArTPC experiment using stopping secondary charged pions.

Replication through cell division is one of the most fundamental processes of life and a major driver of dynamics in systems ranging from bacterial colonies to embryogenesis, tissues and tumors. While regulation often plays a role in shaping self-organization, mounting evidence suggests that many biologically relevant behaviors exploit principles based on a limited number of physical ingredients, and particle-based models have become a popular platform to reconstitute and investigate these emergent dynamics. However, incorporating division into such models often leads to aberrant mechanical fluctuations that hamper physically meaningful analysis. Here, we present a minimal model focusing on mechanical consistency during division. Cells are comprised of two nodes, overlapping disks which separate from each other during cell division, resulting in transient dumbbell shapes. Internal degrees of freedom, cell-cell interactions and equations of motion are designed to ensure force continuity at all times, including through division, both for the dividing cell itself as well as interaction partners, while retaining the freedom to define arbitrary anisotropic mobilities. As a benchmark, we also translate an established model of proliferating spherocylinders with similar dynamics into our theoretical framework. Numerical simulations of both models demonstrate force continuity of the new disk cell model and quantify our improvements. We also investigate some basic collective behaviors related to alignment and orientational order and find consistency both between the models and with the literature. A reference implementation of the model is freely available as a package in the Julia programming language based on $\mathit{InPartS}$. Our model is ideally suited for the investigation of mechanical observables such as velocities and stresses, and is easily extensible with additional features., Comment: 18 pages, 6 figures

Despite the early promise of centering structural racism in explanatory models of firearm violence, there are noticeable gaps in whats been produced thus far; in particular, a deeper and more serious engagement with long-standing theories of racism is needed to further enrich our understanding of how structural inequalities produce unequal burdens of firearm-related harms. Thus, building on theories and concepts from a range of academic fields and Black philosophical perspectives, we developed a theoretical framework to help explain the role of place-based structural racism on firearm violence disparities. A central component of our framework is the concept racial capitalism, which contends that racial exploitation and the accumulation of assets depend on and reinforce one another. In this article, we present our framework and highlight how two processes related to racial capitalism-racialized dispossession and racialized spatial stigma-are connected with geographic disparities in firearm violence. We also present the results of an ecological cross-sectional study that reveals a potential key association between racial capitalism and firearm violence disparities on the neighborhood-level. We used a structural intersectionality approach and descriptive epidemiological methods to highlight and quantitatively describe spatial firearm violence disparities that could potentially be linked to the varying exposure of two dimensions of racial capitalism-historical redlining and contemporary racialized subprime mortgage lending. We found that sustained disadvantaged census tracts (tracts that were historically redlined and experienced higher contemporary subprime lending) experienced the highest burden of firearm violence in Baltimore City between 2015 and 2019. Our research suggests that racial capitalism could potentially be a root cause of firearm violence disparities. A theoretical framework based on racial capitalism can inform the development and usage of indicators and analytic methods for racism-related firearm violence research. Moreover, this framework can identify factors to prioritize in equity-based violence prevention policies and programs.

Long COVID is a debilitating, multisystemic illness following a SARS-CoV-2 infection whose duration may be indefinite. Over four years into the pandemic, little knowledge has been generated from clinical trials. We analyzed the information available on ClinicalTrials.gov, and found that the rigor and focus of trials vary widely, and that the majority test non-pharmacological interventions with insufficient evidence. We highlight promising trials underway, and encourage the proliferation of clinical trials for treating Long COVID and other infection-associated chronic conditions and illnesses (IACCIs). We recommend several guidelines for Long COVID trials: First, pharmaceutical trials with potentially curative, primary interventions should be prioritized, and both drug repurposing and new drug development should be pursued. Second, study designs should be both rigorous and accessible, e.g., triple-blinded randomized trials that can be conducted remotely, without participants needing to leave their homes. Third, studies should have multiple illness comparator cohorts for IACCIs such as myalgic encephalomyelitis (ME/CFS) and dysautonomia, and screen for the full spectrum of symptomatology and pathologies of these illnesses. Fourth, studies should consider inclusion/exclusion criteria with an eye towards equity and breadth of representation, including participants of all races, ethnicities, and genders most impacted by COVID-19, and including all levels of illness severity. Fifth, involving patient-researchers in all aspects of studies brings immensely valuable perspectives that will increase the impact of trials. We also encourage the development of efficient clinical trial designs including methods to study several therapies in parallel.

Long COVID is a chronic and often disabling illness with long-term consequences. Although progress has been made in the clinical characterization of long COVID, no approved treatments exist and disconnects between patients and researchers threaten to hinder future progress. Incorporating patients as active collaborators in long COVID research can bridge the gap and accelerate progress toward treatments and cures.

Introduction: Pain is a major driver of visits to the emergency department (ED). Clinicians must consider not only the efficacy of treatment options but also subsequent healthcare utilization and patient-centered outcomes such as side effects from prescribed medications. Our goal in this study was to determine whether there was an association between acute pain treatment regimen (opioids, intranasal non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs [NSAIDs], or both) and unscheduled healthcare visits following ED discharge. Methods: This study was a secondary analysis of the Acute Management of Pain from the Emergency Department (AMPED) prospective, observational cohort study. We used Cox proportional hazards analysis to assess the relationship between treatment regimen and time to first unscheduled healthcare visit. Repeated measures logistic regression analyses were used to determine the relationship between treatment regimen and any unscheduled visits, and to evaluate whether this relationship was mediated by pain severity and/or medication side effects. Results: Of 831 total enrolled participants, 141 (16.9%) experienced an unplanned healthcare visit within five days of ED discharge. A majority of these visits happened one day after the ED visit. Those who were treated with intranasal NSAIDs only were less likely to have an unscheduled healthcare visit compared to those who received opioids only, with an adjusted odds ratio (AOR) of 0.63. The higher odds of unscheduled healthcare visits with opioids were mediated by both the presence of side effects and higher pain levels, with AORs of 2.24 and 1.33, respectively. Conclusion: Opioid treatment for acute pain is associated with increased unscheduled healthcare visits compared to those treated with intranasal ketorolac. This difference can be explained by higher levels of ongoing pain and greater medication side effects.

Mathematics - Number Theory - Abstract
Bruinier and Raum, building on work of Ibukiyama-Poor-Yuen, have studied a notion of ``formal Siegel modular forms". These objects are formal sums that have the symmetry properties of the Fourier expansion of a holomorphic Siegel modular form. These authors proved that formal Siegel modular forms necessarily converge absolutely on the Siegel half-space, and thus are the Fourier expansion of an honest Siegel modular form. The purpose of this note is to give a new proof of the cuspidal case of this ``automatic convergence" theorem of Bruinier-Raum. We use the same basic ideas in a separate paper to prove an automatic convergence theorem for cuspidal quaternionic modular forms on exceptional groups., Comment: 8 pages

The international collaboration designing and constructing the Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment (DUNE) at the Long-Baseline Neutrino Facility (LBNF) has developed a two-phase strategy toward the implementation of this leading-edge, large-scale science project. The 2023 report of the US Particle Physics Project Prioritization Panel (P5) reaffirmed this vision and strongly endorsed DUNE Phase I and Phase II, as did the European Strategy for Particle Physics. While the construction of the DUNE Phase I is well underway, this White Paper focuses on DUNE Phase II planning. DUNE Phase-II consists of a third and fourth far detector (FD) module, an upgraded near detector complex, and an enhanced 2.1 MW beam. The fourth FD module is conceived as a "Module of Opportunity", aimed at expanding the physics opportunities, in addition to supporting the core DUNE science program, with more advanced technologies. This document highlights the increased science opportunities offered by the DUNE Phase II near and far detectors, including long-baseline neutrino oscillation physics, neutrino astrophysics, and physics beyond the standard model. It describes the DUNE Phase II near and far detector technologies and detector design concepts that are currently under consideration. A summary of key R&D goals and prototyping phases needed to realize the Phase II detector technical designs is also provided. DUNE's Phase II detectors, along with the increased beam power, will complete the full scope of DUNE, enabling a multi-decadal program of groundbreaking science with neutrinos.

Mathematics - Number Theory - Abstract
We prove that the space of cuspidal quaternionic modular forms on the groups of type $F_4$ and $E_n$ have a purely algebraic characterization. This characterization involves Fourier coefficients and Fourier-Jacobi expansions of the cuspidal modular forms. The main component of the proof of the algebraic characterization is to show that certain infinite sums, which are potentially the Fourier expansion of a cuspidal modular form, converge absolutely. As a consequence of the algebraic characterization, we deduce that the cuspidal quaternionic modular forms have a basis consisting of forms all of whose Fourier coefficients are algebraic numbers.

ProtoDUNE Single-Phase (ProtoDUNE-SP) is a 770-ton liquid argon time projection chamber that operated in a hadron test beam at the CERN Neutrino Platform in 2018. We present a measurement of the total inelastic cross section of charged kaons on argon as a function of kaon energy using 6 and 7 GeV/$c$ beam momentum settings. The flux-weighted average of the extracted inelastic cross section at each beam momentum setting was measured to be 380$\pm$26 mbarns for the 6 GeV/$c$ setting and 379$\pm$35 mbarns for the 7 GeV/$c$ setting.

Mathematics - Number Theory ,11F67 (11F80, 11F85, 11F33) - Abstract
This article explains how to practically compute L-invariants of p-new eigenforms using p-adic L-series and exceptional zero phenomena. As proof of the utility, we compiled a data set consisting of over 150,000 L-invariants. We analyze qualitative and quantitative features found in the data. This includes conjecturing a statistical law for the distribution of the valuations of L-invariants in a fixed level as the weights of eigenforms approach infinity. One novel point of our investigation is that the algorithm is sensitive to compiling data for fixed Galois representations modulo p. Therefore, we explain new perspectives on L-invariants that are related to Galois representations. We propose understanding the structures in our data through the lens of deformation rings and moduli stacks of Galois representations., Comment: 43 pages. 24 figures and 3 tables

The determination of the direction of a stellar core collapse via its neutrino emission is crucial for the identification of the progenitor for a multimessenger follow-up. A highly effective method of reconstructing supernova directions within the Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment (DUNE) is introduced. The supernova neutrino pointing resolution is studied by simulating and reconstructing electron-neutrino charged-current absorption on $^{40}$Ar and elastic scattering of neutrinos on electrons. Procedures to reconstruct individual interactions, including a newly developed technique called ``brems flipping'', as well as the burst direction from an ensemble of interactions are described. Performance of the burst direction reconstruction is evaluated for supernovae happening at a distance of 10 kpc for a specific supernova burst flux model. The pointing resolution is found to be 3.4 degrees at 68% coverage for a perfect interaction-channel classification and a fiducial mass of 40 kton, and 6.6 degrees for a 10 kton fiducial mass respectively. Assuming a 4% rate of charged-current interactions being misidentified as elastic scattering, DUNE's burst pointing resolution is found to be 4.3 degrees (8.7 degrees) at 68% coverage., Comment: 25 pages, 16 figures

In this project, we investigate the accuracy of forecasting intraday and daily trading volume of the exchange-traded fund SPY. The ability to forecast volume over varying time intervals with high accuracy is a critical element to many trading strategies. After performing exploratory data analysis on intraday and daily SPY data we identify three methods for our analysis: ARIMA and ARIMAX models, with or without seasonality, as well as a Frequency Domain Process Representation. To evaluate predictive power of our models, we use mean squared error, mean absolute percentage error, and volume weighted average price (VWAP) tracking error. All models for both intraday and daily data output strong VWAP predictions in comparison to the VWAP estimates produced by naive baseline methodologies. In both cases volume is most accurately forecasted using ARIMA models with exogenous variables in the form of technical indicators, with intraday incorporating a seasonal component and daily not.

The current standard model of cosmology successfully describes a variety of measurements, but the nature of its main ingredients, dark matter and dark energy, remains unknown. Euclid is a medium-class mission in the Cosmic Vision 2015-2025 programme of the European Space Agency (ESA) that will provide high-resolution optical imaging, as well as near-infrared imaging and spectroscopy, over about 14,000 deg^2 of extragalactic sky. In addition to accurate weak lensing and clustering measurements that probe structure formation over half of the age of the Universe, its primary probes for cosmology, these exquisite data will enable a wide range of science. This paper provides a high-level overview of the mission, summarising the survey characteristics, the various data-processing steps, and data products. We also highlight the main science objectives and expected performance., Comment: Accepted for publication in the A&A special issue`Euclid on Sky'

Mathematics - Optimization and Control - Abstract
Markov Decision Processes (MDPs) are mathematical models of sequential decision-making under uncertainty that have found applications in healthcare, manufacturing, logistics, and others. In these models, a decision-maker observes the state of a stochastic process and determines which action to take with the goal of maximizing the expected total discounted rewards received. In many applications, the state space of the true system is large and there may be limited observations out of certain states to estimate the transition probability matrix. To overcome this, modelers will aggregate the true states into ``superstates" resulting in a smaller state space. This aggregation process improves computational tractability and increases the number of observations among superstates. Thus, the modeler's choice of state space leads to a trade-off in transition probability estimates. While coarser discretization of the state space gives more observations in each state to estimate the transition probability matrix, this comes at the cost of precision in the state characterization and resulting policy recommendations. In this paper, we consider the implications of this modeling decision on the resulting policies from MDPs for which the true model is expected to have a threshold policy that is optimal. We analyze these MDPs and provide conditions under which the aggregated MDP will also have an optimal threshold policy. Using a simulation study, we explore the trade-offs between more fine and more coarse aggregation. We explore the the show that there is the highest potential for policy improvement on larger state spaces, but that aggregated MDPs are preferable under limited data. We discuss how these findings the implications of our findings for modelers who must select which state space design to use.

Social vulnerability indices have increased traction for guiding infrastructure investment decisions to prioritize communities that need these investments most. One such plan is the Biden-Harris Justice40 initiative, which aims to guide equitable infrastructure investments by ensuring that disadvantaged communities defined by the Climate & Economic Justice Screening Tool (CEJST) receive 40% of the total benefit realized by the investment. However, there is limited research on the practicality of applying vulnerability indices like the CEJST to real-world decision-making for policy outcomes. In this paper, we study this gap by examining the effectiveness of vulnerability indices in a case study focused on power shutoff and undergrounding decisions in wildfire-prone regions. Using a mixed-integer program and a high-fidelity synthetic transmission network in Texas, we model resource allocation policies inspired by Justice40 and evaluate their impact on reducing power outages and mitigating wildfire risk for vulnerable groups. Our analysis reveals that the Justice40 framework may fail to protect certain communities facing high wildfire risk. In our case study, we show that indigenous groups are particularly impacted. We posit that this outcome is likely due to information losses from data aggregation and the use of generalized vulnerability indices. Through the use of explicit group-level protections, we are able to bound the best possible outcome for population groups that are proportionally most affected.

Computer Science - Neural and Evolutionary Computing - Abstract
Co-evolution is a powerful problem-solving approach. However, fitness evaluation in co-evolutionary algorithms can be computationally expensive, as the quality of an individual in one population is defined by its interactions with many (or all) members of one or more other populations. To accelerate co-evolutionary systems, we introduce phylogeny-informed interaction estimation, which uses runtime phylogenetic analysis to estimate interaction outcomes between individuals based on how their relatives performed against each other. We test our interaction estimation method with three distinct co-evolutionary systems: two systems focused on measuring problem-solving success and one focused on measuring evolutionary open-endedness. We find that phylogeny-informed estimation can substantially reduce the computation required to solve problems, particularly at the beginning of long-term evolutionary runs. Additionally, we find that our estimation method initially jump-starts the evolution of neural complexity in our open-ended domain, but estimation-free systems eventually "catch-up" if given enough time. More broadly, continued refinements to these phylogeny-informed interaction estimation methods offers a promising path to reducing the computational cost of running co-evolutionary systems while maintaining their open-endedness.

The Eigenstate Thermalization Hypothesis (ETH) has played a key role in recent advances in the high energy and condensed matter communities. It explains how an isolated quantum system in a far-from-equilibrium initial state can evolve to a state that is indistinguishable from thermal equilibrium, with observables relaxing to almost time-independent results that can be described using traditional statistical mechanics ensembles. In this work we probe the limits of ETH, pushing it outside its prototypical applications in several directions. We design a qutrit lattice system with conserved quasilocal charge, in which we verify a form of generalized eigenstate thermalization. We also observe signatures of thermalization in states well outside microcanonical windows of both charge and energy, which we dub `generic ETH.', Comment: 44 pages, 20 figures; v2 formatting changes, minor expanded discussions, additional citations

The Module-0 Demonstrator is a single-phase 600 kg liquid argon time projection chamber operated as a prototype for the DUNE liquid argon near detector. Based on the ArgonCube design concept, Module-0 features a novel 80k-channel pixelated charge readout and advanced high-coverage photon detection system. In this paper, we present an analysis of an eight-day data set consisting of 25 million cosmic ray events collected in the spring of 2021. We use this sample to demonstrate the imaging performance of the charge and light readout systems as well as the signal correlations between the two. We also report argon purity and detector uniformity measurements, and provide comparisons to detector simulations., Comment: 47 pages, 41 figures

ObjectiveWhen the peritoneal cavity cannot serve as the distal shunt terminus, nonperitoneal shunts, typically terminating in the atrium or pleural space, are used. The comparative effectiveness of these two terminus options has not been evaluated. The authors directly compared shunt survival and complication rates for ventriculoatrial (VA) and ventriculopleural (VPl) shunts in a pediatric cohort.MethodsThe Hydrocephalus Clinical Research Network Core Data Project was used to identify children ≤ 18 years of age who underwent either VA or VPl shunt insertion. The primary outcome was time to shunt failure. Secondary outcomes included distal site complications and frequency of shunt failure at 6, 12, and 24 months.ResultsThe search criteria yielded 416 children from 14 centers with either a VA (n = 318) or VPl (n = 98) shunt, including those converted from ventriculoperitoneal shunts. Children with VA shunts had a lower median age at insertion (6.1 years vs 12.4 years, p < 0.001). Among those children with VA shunts, a hydrocephalus etiology of intraventricular hemorrhage (IVH) secondary to prematurity comprised a higher proportion (47.0% vs 31.2%) and myelomeningocele comprised a lower proportion (17.8% vs 27.3%) (p = 0.024) compared with those with VPl shunts. At 24 months, there was a higher cumulative number of revisions for VA shunts (48.6% vs 38.9%, p = 0.038). When stratified by patient age at shunt insertion, VA shunts in children < 6 years had the lowest shunt survival rate (p < 0.001, log-rank test). After controlling for age and etiology, multivariable analysis did not find that shunt type (VA vs VPl) was predictive of time to shunt failure. No differences were found in the cumulative frequency of complications (VA 6.0% vs VPl 9.2%, p = 0.257), but there was a higher rate of pneumothorax in the VPl cohort (3.1% vs 0%, p = 0.013).ConclusionsShunt survival was similar between VA and VPl shunts, although VA shunts are used more often, particularly in younger patients. Children < 6 years with VA shunts appeared to have the shortest shunt survival, which may be a result of the VA group having more cases of IVH secondary to prematurity; however, when age and etiology were included in a multivariable model, shunt location (atrium vs pleural space) was not associated with time to failure. The baseline differences between children treated with a VA versus a VPl shunt likely explain current practice patterns.

- Abstract
A lack of high-quality provider education hinders the delivery of standard-of-care delirium detection and prevention practices in the intensive care unit (ICU). To fill this gap, we developed and validated an e-learning ICU Delirium Playbook consisting of eight videos and a 44-question knowledge assessment quiz. Given the increasing Spanish-speaking population worldwide, we translated and cross-culturally adapted the playbook from English into Spanish. To translate and culturally adapt the ICU Delirium Playbook into Spanish, the second most common native language worldwide. The translation and cross-cultural adaptation process included double forward and back translations and harmonization by a 14-person interdisciplinary team of ICU nurses and physicians, delirium experts, methodologists, medical interpreters, and bilingual professionals representing many Spanish-speaking global regions. After a preeducation quiz, a nurse focus group completed the playbook videos and posteducation quiz, followed by a semistructured interview. The ICU Delirium Playbook: Spanish Version maintained conceptual equivalence to the English version. Focus group participants posted mean (standard deviation) pre- and post-playbook scores of 63% (10%) and 78% (12%), with a 15% (11%) pre-post improvement (P = 0.01). Participants reported improved perceived competency in performing the Confusion Assessment Method for the ICU and provided positive feedback regarding the playbook. After translation and cultural adaptation, the ICU Delirium Playbook: Spanish Version yielded significant knowledge assessment improvements and positive feedback. The Spanish playbook is now available for public dissemination.

We provide a uniform bound on the partial sums of multiplicative functions under very general hypotheses. As an application, we give a nearly optimal estimate for the count of $n \le x$ for which the Alladi-Erd\H{o}s function $A(n) = \sum_{p^k \parallel n} k p$ takes values in a given residue class modulo $q$, where $q$ varies uniformly up to a fixed power of $\log x$. We establish a similar result for the equidistribution of the Euler totient function $\phi(n)$ among the coprime residues to the "correct" moduli $q$ that vary uniformly in a similar range, and also quantify the failure of equidistribution of the values of $\phi(n)$ among the coprime residue classes to the "incorrect" moduli., Comment: 14 pages. Physics - Instrumentation and Detectors - Abstract
Doping of liquid argon TPCs (LArTPCs) with a small concentration of xenon is a technique for light-shifting and facilitates the detection of the liquid argon scintillation light. In this paper, we present the results of the first doping test ever performed in a kiloton-scale LArTPC. From February to May 2020, we carried out this special run in the single-phase DUNE Far Detector prototype (ProtoDUNE-SP) at CERN, featuring 720 t of total liquid argon mass with 410 t of fiducial mass. A 5.4 ppm nitrogen contamination was present during the xenon doping campaign. The goal of the run was to measure the light and charge response of the detector to the addition of xenon, up to a concentration of 18.8 ppm. The main purpose was to test the possibility for reduction of non-uniformities in light collection, caused by deployment of photon detectors only within the anode planes. Light collection was analysed as a function of the xenon concentration, by using the pre-existing photon detection system (PDS) of ProtoDUNE-SP and an additional smaller set-up installed specifically for this run. In this paper we first summarize our current understanding of the argon-xenon energy transfer process and the impact of the presence of nitrogen in argon with and without xenon dopant. We then describe the key elements of ProtoDUNE-SP and the injection method deployed. Two dedicated photon detectors were able to collect the light produced by xenon and the total light. The ratio of these components was measured to be about 0.65 as 18.8 ppm of xenon were injected. We performed studies of the collection efficiency as a function of the distance between tracks and light detectors, demonstrating enhanced uniformity of response for the anode-mounted PDS. We also show that xenon doping can substantially recover light losses due to contamination of the liquid argon by nitrogen., Comment: 36 pages, 20 figures.
