Runoff originating from ground ice contained in rock glaciers represents a significant water supply for lowlands. Pseudo-relict rock glaciers contain patchy permafrost but appear to be relict, and therefore they can be misinterpreted when using standard classification approaches. The permafrost content, spatial distribution and frequency of this type of rock glacier are poorly known. Therefore, identifying pseudo-relict rock glaciers that might still contain permafrost, and potentially ice, is crucial for understanding their hydrological role in a climate change context. This work analyses rock–glacier spring-water temperature in a 795 km2 catchment in the eastern Italian Alps to understand how many rock glaciers classified as relict could have spring-water temperatures comparable to active or transitional rock glaciers as possible evidence of their pseudo-relict nature. Spring-water temperature, often auxiliary to other approaches for specific sites, was used for a preliminary estimate of the permafrost presence in 50 rock glaciers classified as relict. In addition, we present electrical resistivity tomography (ERT) results on two relict rock glaciers with opposing spring-water temperature and surface characteristics to constrain spring-water temperature results at the local scale. The results show that about 50 % of the rock glaciers classified as relict might be pseudo-relict, thus potentially containing permafrost. Both supposedly relict rock glaciers investigated by geophysics contain frozen sediments. The majority of the cold springs are mainly associated with rock glaciers with blocky and scarcely vegetated surfaces, but geophysics suggest that permafrost may also exist in rock glaciers below 2000 m a.s.l., entirely covered by vegetation and with a spring-water temperature of up to 3.7 °C. We estimate that pseudo-relict rock glaciers might contain a significant portion (20 %) of all the ice stored in the rock glaciers in the study area. These results highlight the relevance of pseudo-relict rock glaciers in periglacial environments. Even if not a conclusive method, spring-water temperature analyses can be used to preliminarily distinguish between relict and pseudo-relict rock glaciers in wide regions.

Background: Out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA) is a major health concern in Europe, leading to significant morbidity and mortality. Survivors often suffer from cognitive deficits, anxiety, and depression, that affect significantly their quality of life. Current post-discharge care is inconsistent and frequently overlooks subtle but disabling symptoms. The ENFORCER trial aims to significantly enhance the health and quality of life of OHCA survivors by providing a comprehensive, accessible, and user-friendly internet-based lifestyle intervention. Methods: ENFORCER is a multicentre, parallel group randomized controlled trial involving OHCA survivors aged 18–80 years with cognitive impairment or anxiety/depression measured through validated instruments.Participants will be randomized 1:1 to the intervention or the control group. The intervention group will receive a one-year program via a secure web application, offering cognitive, emotional, and physical rehabilitation support. The control group will receive standard care.The primary outcome is the difference in the proportion of patients without cognitive or emotional symptoms between the two groups after one year.Secondary outcomes include changes in the level of patients’ cognitive and emotional symptoms, quality of life, sleep quality, sexual interest and satisfaction, and caregivers’ burden, quality of life, sleep quality and emotional symptoms in the two groups. Discussion: The trial addresses the need for consistent post-discharge care, and the timely detection and treatment of cognitive and emotional problems. The internet-based approach allows to potentially reach many patients, ensuring cost-effectiveness and high adherence rates.The study results could establish a standard for post-OHCA care, improving long-term recovery and quality of life for survivors.Trial registration.The trial is registered at clinicaltrials.gov (NCT06395558).

Seismic refraction tomography is a commonly used technique to characterise rock glaciers, as the boundary between unfrozen and ice-bearing layers represents a strong impedance contrast. In several rock glaciers, we observed a reversed polarity of the waves refracted by an extended ice-bearing layer compared to direct-wave arrivals. This phase change may be related to the presence of a thin low-velocity layer (LVL), such as fine- to coarse-grained sediments, above a thicker ice-rich layer. Our results are confirmed by the modelling and analysis of synthetic seismograms to demonstrate that the presence of a low-velocity layer can produce a polarity reversal on the seismic gather.

Large-area image acquisition techniques are essential in underwater investigations: high-resolution 3D image-based reconstructions have improved coral reef monitoring by enabling novel seascape ecological analysis. Artificial intelligence (AI) offers methods for significantly accelerating image data interpretation, such as automatically recognizing, enumerating, and measuring organisms. However, the rapid proliferation of these technological achievements has led to a relative lack of standardization of methods. Remarkably, there are notable differences in procedures for generating human and AI annotations, and there is also a scarcity of publicly available datasets and shared machine-learning models. The lack of standard procedures makes it challenging to compare and reproduce scientific findings. One way to overcome this problem is to make the most used platforms by coral reef scientists interoperable so that the analyses can all be exported into a common format. This paper introduces functionality to promote interoperability between three popular open-source software tools dedicated to the digital study of coral reefs: TagLab, CoralNet, and Viscore. As users of each platform may have different analysis pipelines, we discuss several workflows for managing and processing point and area annotations, improving collaboration among these tools. Our work sets the foundation for a more seamless ecosystem that maintains the established investigation procedures of various laboratories but allows for easier result sharing.

Justificativa e Objetivos: Arboviroses impactam a saúde pública mundialmente, causando graves prejuízos à saúde humana. Os arbovírus causam síndromes febris agudas semelhantes, desafiando o diagnóstico diferencial e a notificação adequada. O objetivo desta pesquisa foi descrever o perfil epidemiológico e laboratorial dos casos suspeitos de arboviroses notificados no sudeste de Mato Grosso (MT) durante a primeira emergência brasileira do Zika vírus. Métodos: as características clínicas e epidemiológicas das arboviroses foram analisadas de forma retrospectiva e descritiva. Amostras de soro foram avaliadas por reação em cadeia da polimerase em tempo real via transcriptase reversa para detecção de Zika, Dengue e Chikungunya, e por imunoensaio para detecção de IgM e IgG contra Zika. Resultados:Dos 197 pacientes, 63% eram do sexo feminino e oito estavam grávidas. A média de idade foi de 32 anos, dos quais 44% tinham 19 e 59 anos; 28% eram brancos; 34% eram alfabetizados; e 58,9% eram residentes urbanos. Cerca de 61% dos casos ocorreram durante os períodos chuvosos, sendo 12,1% em três regiões da área de estudo. Os distúrbios musculoesqueléticos foram as principais queixas (22,8%), seguidos de febre (13,7%), exantema e petéquias (12,6%), cefaleia (11,7%), prurido (10%), manifestações oftalmológicas (6,1%) e manifestações gastrointestinais (5,6%). Por meio de ensaios moleculares, foram detectados 8,9% e 1,7% de Zika e Dengue, respectivamente, nas amostras testadas. Os ensaios sorológicos para Zika mostraram 10,6% de amostras positivas para IgM e 55,8% para IgG. Conclusão: Este estudo fornece o perfil clínico, epidemiológico e laboratorial da emergência do Zika vírus em ambientes de alta endemicidade de dengue. A relevância do estudo é compreender a introdução e ocorrência concomitante de uma nova arbovirose.

Introduction Transition of care from hospital to primary care has been recognised globally as a high-risk scenario for older patients’ safety by the WHO. Indeed, sub-optimal care transitions are associated with increased mortality, morbidity and adverse events.Improving communication through timely and accurate clinical information transfer has been identified as a key component of optimal care transitions. However, timely and accurate clinical information transfer from hospital to primary care varies across countries and institutions. Information transfer practices are heterogeneous, in some places depending on individual initiative and sometimes not occurring at all.To improve current practices, we will conduct a scoping review to identify the current and suggested practices of information transfer between hospital-based physicians or pharmacists and the primary care team of older patients.Methods and analysis This scoping review will be conducted using Arksey and O’Malley’s methodological framework, augmented by Levac et al and the JBI Manual for Evidence Synthesis, and the findings reported according to the PRISMA extension for Scoping Reviews. We will use a search strategy developed with a specialised librarian to search four databases (MEDLINE, Embase, CINAHL and AgeLine) and reference lists of selected studies. All studies adhering to our iteratively created eligibility criteria outlined by the population, concept and context elements will be included. The data extraction table will also be constructed iteratively with the research team, and results will be presented tabularly and qualitatively.Ethics and dissemination Ethics approval was obtained. We plan to disseminate the results as scientific communication (peer-reviewed journal and presentations) and during a deliberative dialogue workshop with key stakeholders in order to generate recommendations to improve current practices in our own clinical setting, potentially to be adapted and scaled up with our collaborators provincially, nationally and internationally.This protocol has been registered on the Open Science Framework: https://osf.io/eg958.

The text explores the notion of urban atmosphere, its ordinary rhythm, and the debilitating effects that it might have on the bodies that breathe through it, by looking at Nuri Bilge Ceylan’s third movie, and first international success, Uzak [2002]. In the first two sections, the theoretical background is laid out, both presenting a ‘tensional’ concept of atmosphere and proposing the employment of the notion of ‘ordinary’ as a way to explore how atmospheres unfold in everyday life. How can we attune to the fleeting consistency of the ordinary, however? The third section makes an argument for the capacity of cinema to do so, mainly drawing from the work of Gilles Deleuze and Lauren Berlant. In the subsequent sections, Uzak is explored by showing how these themes are brought forward through the slow-paced aesthetics of the film.

Over the last few decades, tick-borne encephalitis (TBE) has become a growing public health problem in Europe. The tick-borne encephalitis virus (TBEV) is a zoonotic virus that affects the central nervous system (CNS). TBEV has been detected in 27 European countries, and the rise in TBE cases is mainly due to environmental and ecological factors, and factors that increase the risk of human exposure to infected ticks. The infection via the alimentary route is the second most common means of TBEV transmission to humans. Raw milk from infected goats, sheep, or cows has been identified as a source of human food-borne infections. This study aims to gather new information on the prevalence of tick-borne encephalitis virus (TBEV) in raw goat’s and cow’s milk and related raw products in the Lombard Alps (Italy). This is important due to the close proximity of Lombardy to the Triveneto region, where TBE is endemic, and southern Switzerland, where numerous TBEV-positive mammals have been found. Throughout 2023, a passive monitoring plan was implemented on samples delivered for TBEV analyses from the Alpine pastures. In total, 248 specimens including raw milk, raw milk cheese, and butter were tested. This is the first monitoring of food at risk of TBEV transmission in a non-endemic region with evidence of TBEV circulation. Despite testing a wide range of dairy products, no sample tested positive for RNA-TBEV by real-time RT-PCR. Preliminary results suggest that raw milk and raw dairy products do not pose a significant risk of TBEV transmission to humans in the territory of Lombardy.

ObjectiveThe aim of the present retrospective study was to compare the changes resulting from treatment using the MA and the TB with special regard to the oro-and naso-pharyngeal sagittal airway dimensions in subjects with dentoskeletal Class II malocclusions and positive history of Sleep Disorder Breathing (SDB) diagnosed through the Pediatric Sleep Questionnaire (PSQ).Materials and methodsThis retrospective study involved 2 groups of subjects: patients treated with Twin Block (TB group: n = 22, 10 males, 12 females; mean age 12.0 ± 1.3 years) and patients treated with Mandibular Advancement (MA group: n = 23, 11 males, 12 females; mean age 12.2 ± 1.1 years). Pretreatment (T1) and posttreatment (T2) lateral cephalograms were analyzed. All patients underwent the PSQ to diagnose SDB.ResultsIn both treated groups there was an increase in the airways dimensions and an improvement in symptoms related SDB. The statistical comparison of the changes between T1 and T2 in the TB group showed a significant increment in upper airway size (PNS-AD2, +1.50 mm + −3.30; McNamara's upper pharynx dimension, +2.21 + −4.21) after active treatment. The MA group showed similar results during active treatment with a significant increase in both upper (PNS-AD2, +2.72 + −2.65; McNamara's upper pharynx dimension, +2.97 + −3.07) and lower (PNS-AD1, +2.17 mm + −3.54) airway size.ConclusionsDespite the different structure of these two devices and the different advancement protocols, both appliances were valuable as a suitable treatment option for Class II patients with respiratory disorders, inducing an increase of upper and lower airway size and a significant reduction in diurnal symptoms.

Abstract Currently food fraud and authenticity of products composition are topics of great concern; ingredients quantification could allow to identify small amounts of contaminats or voluntary addition of improper components. Many molecular methods are available for species identification in foodstuffs but, for a better application, they should not be affected by the interference of other ingredients. The main purpose of this work was to verify the Real Time PCR and the Digital PCR (dPCR) quantification performances on baby food samples, specifically selected for their high miscibility to limit variability; chicken was selected as target to verify the performance of quantification of methods after having spiked the same quantity in different baby foods. The other aims were: (1) to verify a constant genome copies ratio existence between mammalian and avian species (2) to verify the dPCR performance, set up on housekeeping, to quantify mammalian and avian species in commercial products. Digital PCR showed fewer differences respect to Real Time PCR, at the same 15% w/w chicken spiking level. Despite the constant difference between mammalian and avian genome copies, in samples with the same spiking weight, the confidence intervals increasing towards the extreme values, made impossible to use genome copies ratio as a sort of correction factor between species. Finally, the dPCR system using the myostatin housekeeping gene to determine the chicken content seemed reliable to verify the labelling compliance in meat-based commercial products.

Background: Although several conditions and specific risk factors have been associated with stillbirth (SB), in most of the cases it is difficult to identify the definitive etiopathology and cause of death. Specifically, the role of infections in SB is still debated. Our aim was to study maternal, placental, and fetal tissues in cases of SB in order to define the causative link between infections and fetal death, through a multidisciplinary clinical audit. Methods: Between 2014 and 2022, microbiological investigations on maternal, placental and fetal samples of SB cases were performed according to a standardized protocol including serology, cultures, and molecular biology. Autopsies and placental examination were mandatory in all SB cases. Results: A total of 182 cases of SB were investigated. Bacteria were detected in 22.2% of vaginal swabs, 65% of placental biopsies, 29% of fetal blood, and 14.1% of oropharyngeal swabs. Vaginal and oropharyngeal swabs were positive for urogenital mycoplasmas in 25.2% and 8.6%, respectively. Positive results of microbiological investigations, in association with histological features suggestive of infection, were observed in six cases, indicating that fetal death was likely related to a bacterial infection. In one case, a high SARS-CoV-2 load was found in the placenta of a SB due to placental abruption. Conclusions: Infections were likely associated with fetal death in 3.8% of cases. Thus, in developed countries, an infection, defined when positive microbiological findings are associated with histological evidence of organ damage, is a minor contributory factor in SB.

Psychodinae (Diptera: Psychodidae), commonly known as “drain flies”, are a subfamily of insects adapted to environments modified by humans. While often regarded as harmless, it has been reported that they may carry pathogenic microorganisms, contributing to hospital environmental contamination and potentially playing a role in healthcare-associated infections. This study aimed to investigate drain flies in a hospital setting to assess their role in carrying microbial pathogens. Twenty-six drain flies were collected from a tertiary hospital using sterile tubes and processed within two hours. The insects were identified as Clogmia albipunctata (Williston, 1893). Whole-body macerates were cultured on EMB media, and fungal isolates were identified using MALDI-TOF MS and ITS region sequencing. The emergent pathogen Trichosporon asahii was isolated, highlighting the potential role of C. albipunctata as a mechanical vector of fungal pathogens associated with HAIs. These findings underscore the importance of monitoring drain flies as part of infection prevention and control strategies in healthcare settings.

We performed a monocentric, retrospective real-world analysis (RWA) to evaluate the feasibility and the main results of an autologous stem cell transplantation (ASCT)-based program in a cohort of 90 newly diagnosed multiple myeloma patients aged > 65 years who were deemed eligible to such program on the basis of a simplified frailty score. Seventy-six patients received at least one ASCT and 14 patients received also the second. Median progression-free survival was 42 months and overall survival was 84 months. These results compare well with those of other RWAs, and pave the way to further improvements upon incorporation of an anti-CD38+ monoclonal antibody in the ASCT programs.

Com o advento do “estado de bem-estar social” e do neoliberalismo, o conceito de propriedade foi paulatinamente relativizado ao argumento de que ele não poderia ser absoluto, sob pena de violação dos demais “direitos sociais”. De outro lado, o avanço da tecnologia permitiu o surgimento da Bitcoin e de sua block chain, que têm o propósito de viabilizar transações entre duas partes sem a necessidade de um terceiro interveniente, ou seja, um sistema inteiramente baseado em criptografia, que prescinde da confiança em terceiros intermediários. Estabelecidas tais premissas, o presente ensaio pretende abordar como o surgimento da Bitcoin, talvez pretensiosamente, veio a resgatar e reafirmar o direito clássico à propriedade, dadas as características dessa criptomoeda, tais como sua condição de reserva de valor, possibilidade de sua utilização como meio de troca (moeda), sua capacidade de desburocratização das transações e, principalmente, seu caráter inconfiscável (desde que utilizada da forma como foi concebida, mediante custódia privada) e impassível de manipulação. A well-developed soil structure is crucial for a fertile soil and rules its influence on the ecosystem. Slight variations in the way soil components are organized and connected can greatly impact the soil mechanical and hydraulic characteristics. However, these features are challenging to measure at a scale that is relevant for agricultural management. In this study, we assess the capability of two seismic geophysical methods, i.e. Seismic Refraction Tomography and Multichannel Analysis of Surface Waves, to monitor the effects of compaction on agricultural bare soil. The purpose is to highlight the different mechanical response caused both by soil plastic deformation and soil water distribution due to increasing compaction. Results demonstrate that both geophysical techniques provide sufficient information to capture the effects of soil compaction and distinguish its significance, while traditional direct measurements, being punctual, lack sufficient spatial coverage. P-wave velocities carry a strong imprint of soil compaction, provided by seismic refraction, incorporating the information given by the multiphase medium in its entirety. On the other hand, S-wave velocity derived from Surface Waves discriminates the effect of solid matrix structure. This work, moreover, aims to pave the way for seismic methods to spatially characterize compaction at field scale, illustrating its potential and suggesting possible developments.

Sediments of alpine lakes serve as crucial records that reveal the history of lacustrine basins, offering valuable insights into the effects of global changes. One significant effect is the variation in rainfall regimes, which can substantially influence nutrient loads and sedimentation rates in lacustrine ecosystems, thereby playing a pivotal role in shaping biotic communities. In this study, we analyze subfossil chironomid assemblages within a sediment core from an alpine lake (western Italian Alps) to investigate the effects of rainfall and flood regime variations over the past 1200 years. Sediment characterization results highlight changes in sediment textures and C/N ratio values, indicating phases of major material influx from the surrounding landscape into the lake basin. These influxes are likely associated with intense flooding events linked to heavy rainfall periods over time. Flooding events are reflected in changes in chironomid assemblages, which in our samples are primarily related to variations in sediment texture and nutrient loads from the surrounding landscape. Increased abundances of certain taxa (i.e., Brillia, Chaetocladius, Cricotopus, Psectrocladius, Cricotopus/Orthocladius Parorthocladius) may be linked to higher organic matter and vegetation inputs from the surrounding landscape. Biodiversity decreased during certain periods along the core profile due to intense flood regimes and extreme events. These results contribute to our understanding of alpine lake system dynamics, particularly those associated with intense flooding events, which are still understudied.

Air pollutants are usually formed by easily spreading small molecules, representing a severe problem for human health, especially in urban centers. Despite the efforts to stem their diffusion, many diseases are still associated with exposure to these molecules. The present study focuses on modeling and designing two-dimensional systems called Layered Double Hydroxides (LDHs), which can potentially trap these molecules. For this purpose, a Density Functional Theory (DFT) approach has been used to study the role of the elemental composition of LDHs, the type of counterion, and the ability of these systems to intercalate NO2 and SO2 between the LDH layers. The results demonstrated how the counterion determines the different possible spacing between the layers, modulating the internalization capacity of pollutants and determining the stability degree of the system for a long-lasting effect. The variations in structural properties, the density of states (DOS), and the description of the charge transfer have been reported, thus allowing the investigation of aspects that are difficult to observe from an experimental point of view and, at the same time, providing essential details for the effective development of systems that can counteract the spread of air pollutants.
