Abstract

For a finite group G, we introduce the complete suboperad $Q_G$ of the categorical G-Barratt-Eccles operad $P_G$. We prove that $P_G$ is not finitely generated, but $Q_G$ is finitely generated and is a genuine $E_\infty$ G-operad (i.e., it is $N_\infty$ and includes all norms). For G cyclic of order 2 or 3, we determine presentations of the object operad of $Q_G$ and conclude with a discussion of algebras over $Q_G$, which we call biased permutative equivariant categories., Comment: To appear in HHA

13. French Vocabulary--Looking for 'le mot juste.'

Abstract

The apparent difficulty of students of French as a second language to acquire French vocabulary is examined, drawing on experience with teaching Irish university students and the structures and stylistic traits peculiar to French. It is noted that while certain kinds of words (noun, verb, adjective, adverb) occupy little space in text, they take up the most room in a dictionary, and conversely, while others (pronoun, preposition, determiner, conjunction) use much space in text and relatively little in dictionaries. Grammar (structure) and vocabulary are also often taught separately, with grammar receiving more attention. It is proposed that vocabulary deficit has two causes: (1) the obvious word is not always obvious at all; and (2) meaning does not always reside within single words. These concepts are expanded upon and illustrated. It is suggested that while having students keep a list of vocabulary words is a classic technique and using picture dictionaries is handy for concrete vocabulary, a more useful technique is for students to begin with "obvious" words (e.g., "ferme") and cluster around them related terms (e.g., "exploitation, exploitation agricole, recolte, vendange, culture," etc.). This more expansive system for developing vocabulary may be more effective than the conventional linear approach. (MSE)

15. Reception theory : philosophical hermeneutics, literary theory, and biblical interpretation

Abstract

The goal of this thesis is to explore the possibility of applying Hans Robert Jauss' hermeneutic of reception theory to biblical interpretation. The traditional methods employed in biblical interpretation involve a two-way dialogue between the text and the reader. Reception theory expands this into a three-way dialogue, with the third partner being the history of the text's interpretation and application. This third partner has been ignored by biblical interpreters but recently the need to include this has gained some attention. In the first part of the thesis, the work of Hans-Georg Gadamer will be examined in order to provide the philosophical hermeneutical framework for reception theory and its significance for biblical studies. In the second part, this framework will be fleshed out by Hans Robert Jauss' conception of reception theory. Jauss not only builds upon Gadamer's work but his literary hermeneutic provides a model which is applicable to the biblical text and its tradition of interpretation. In the final part, the parable of the Wedding Feast in Matthew 22:1-14 and its Wirkungsgeschichte will be considered as a case study.
