Abstract

We show that the initial value problem associated to the dispersive generalized Benjamin-Ono-Zakharov-Kuznetsov equation$$ u\_t-D\_x^\alpha u\_{x} + u\_{xyy} = uu\_x,\quad (t,x,y)\in\R^3,\quad 1\le \alpha\le 2,$$is locally well-posed in the spaces $E^s$, $s\textgreater{}\frac 2\alpha-\frac 34$, endowed with the norm$\|f\|\_{E^s} = \|\langle |\xi|^\alpha+\mu^2\rangle^s\hat{f}\|\_{L^2(\R^2)}.$As a consequence, we get the global well-posedness in the energy space $E^{1/2}$ as soon as $\alpha\textgreater{}\frac 85$. Abstract

High-quality education helps in finding a job - but student skills heterogeneity and student reluctance to move towards a professional attitude are important barriers to employability. We re-engineered some of the technical courses of a Masters in software development using a Problem-Based Learning (PBL) approach. Although initial results are encouraging, the cost of using PBL must be taken into account. Two aspects are particularly expensive: (i) set-up of the software development practicum, a mid-sized information system and its environment; (ii) screenwriting of problem-based learning scenarios, including procurement of input artefacts.

Abstract

Neutropenia is defined by either an absolute or functional defect (acute myeloid leukemia or myelodysplastic syndrome) of polymorphonuclear neutrophils and is associated with high risk of specific complications that may require intensive care unit (ICU) admission. Specificities in the management of critically ill neutropenic patients prompted the establishment of guidelines dedicated to intensivists. These recommendations were drawn up by a panel of experts brought together by the French Intensive Care Society in collaboration with the French Group for Pediatric Intensive Care Emergencies, the French Society of Anesthesia and Intensive Care, the French Society of Hematology, the French Society for Hospital Hygiene, and the French Infectious Diseases Society. Literature review and formulation of recommendations were performed using the Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development and Evaluation system. Each recommendation was then evaluated and rated by each expert using a methodology derived from the RAND/UCLA Appropriateness Method. Six fields are covered by the provided recommendations: (1) ICU admission and prognosis, (2) protective isolation and prophylaxis, (3) management of acute respiratory failure, (4) organ failure and organ support, (5) antibiotic management and source control, and (6) hematological management. Most of the provided recommendations are obtained from low levels of evidence, however, suggesting a need for additional studies. Seven recommendations were, however, associated with high level of evidences and are related to protective isolation, diagnostic workup of acute respiratory failure, medical management, and timing surgery in patients with typhlitis.

6. Spin-induced symmetry breaking in orbitally ordered NiCr_2O_4 and CuCr_2O_4

Abstract

At room temperature, the normal oxide spinels NiCr_2O_4 and CuCr_2O_4 are tetragonally distorted and crystallize in the I4_1/amd space group due to cooperative Jahn-Teller ordering driven by the orbital degeneracy of tetrahedral Ni$^{2+}$ ($t_2^4$) and Cu$^{2+}$ ($t_2^5$). Upon cooling, these compounds undergo magnetic ordering transitions; interactions being somewhat frustrated for NiCr_2O_4 but not for CuCr_2O_4. We employ variable-temperature high-resolution synchrotron X-ray powder diffraction to establish that at the magnetic ordering temperatures there are further structural changes, which result in both compounds distorting to an orthorhombic structure consistent with the Fddd space group. NiCr_2O_4 exhibits additional distortion, likely within the same space group, at a yet-lower transition temperature of $T$ = 30 K. The tetragonal to orthorhombic structural transition in these compounds appears to primarily involve changes in NiO_4 and CuO_4 tetrahedra.

Abstract

In this note we study the generalized 2D Zakharov-Kuznetsov equations $\partial_tu+\Delta\partial_xu+u^k\partial_xu=0$ for $k\ge 2$. By an iterative method we prove the local well-posedness of these equations in the Sobolev spaces $H^s(\mathbb{R}^2)$ for $s>1/4$ if $k=2$, $s>5/12$ if $k=3$ and $s>1-2/k$ if $k\ge 4$.

Abstract

We prove the local well-posedness of the three-dimensional Zakharov-Kuznetsov equation $\partial_tu+\Delta\partial_xu+ u\partial_xu=0$ in the Sobolev spaces $H^s(\R^3)$, $s>1$, as well as in the Besov space $B^{1,1}_2(\R^3)$. The proof is based on a sharp maximal function estimate in time-weighted spaces.

In this paper, we study the global in time existence problem for the Groma-Balogh model describing the dynamics of dislocation densities. This model is a two-dimensional model where the dislocation densities satisfy a system of transport equations such that the velocity vector field is the shear stress in the material, solving the equations of elasticity. This shear stress can be expressed as some Riesz transform of the dislocation densities. The main tool in the proof of this result is the existence of an entropy for this system

Abstract

UnlabelledBackgroundIn some clinical situations, for which RCT are rare or impossible, the majority of the evidence comes from observational studies, but standard estimations could be biased because they ignore covariates that confound treatment decisions and outcomes.MethodsThree observational studies were conducted to assess the benefit of Allo-SCT in hematological malignancies of multiple myeloma, follicular lymphoma and Hodgkin's disease. Two statistical analyses were performed: the propensity score (PS) matching approach and the inverse probability weighting (IPW) approach.ResultsBased on PS-matched samples, a survival benefit in MM patients treated by Allo-SCT, as compared to similar non-allo treated patients, was observed with an HR of death at 0.35 (95%CI: 0.14-0.88). Similar results were observed in HD, 0.23 (0.07-0.80) but not in FL, 1.28 (0.43-3.77). Estimated benefits of Allo-SCT for the original population using IPW were erased in HR for death at 0.72 (0.37-1.39) for MM patients, 0.60 (0.19-1.89) for HD patients, and 2.02 (0.88-4.66) for FL patients.ConclusionDifferences in estimated benefits rely on whether the underlying population to which they apply is an ideal randomized experimental population (PS) or the original population (IPW). These useful methods should be employed when assessing the effects of innovative treatment in non-randomized experiments.

Abstract

La neutropénie est définie par une baisse du nombre absolu de polynucléaires ou par une dysfonction de ces derniers. Elle est source de complications pouvant nécessiter une admission en réanimation. Les spécificités de prise en charge des patients neutropéniques admis en réanimation ont motivé ce référentiel. Ces recommandations ont été réalisées sous l’égide de la Société de réanimation de langue française (SRLF) par un panel d’experts choisis au sein de la SRLF, du Groupe francophone de réanimation et d’urgences pédiatriques (GFRUP), de la Société française d’anesthésie et de réanimation (Sfar), de la Société française d’hématologie (SFH), de la Société française d’hygiène hospitalière (SF2H) et de la Société de pathologie infectieuse de langue française (SPILF). L’analyse du niveau de preuve et la formulation des recommandations ont suivi la méthode « GRADE » (grading of recommendations assessment, development and evaluation system). Les recommandations ont été cotées selon la méthode RAND/UCLA. Six champs ont été définis : 1) admission en réanimation et pronostic ; 2) isolement et prophylaxies ; 3) diagnostic des complications respiratoires ; 4) prise en charge des complications viscérales ; 5) traitements anti-infectieux : antibiothérapie et contrôle de la source ; 6) prise en charge hématologique. La plupart des recommandations sont de bas niveau de preuve, soulignant les besoins d’études spécifiques dans cette population. Cependant, sept recommandations de haut niveau de preuve ont pu être formulées concernant l’isolement protecteur, la stratégie diagnostique de l’insuffisance respiratoire aiguë, la prise en charge médicale et le délai de la chirurgie de l’entérocolite du neutropénique. 20. LPCVD Silicon Nitride Photonic Integrated Components Designed at 532 Nm Wavelength for a Novel Retinal Projection Concept and Visible Domain Applications

Abstract

This paper describes the design, fabrication, and experimental characterization of several photonic integrated components specifically made for a novel retinal projection concept for augmented reality applications. The retinal projection concept is based on the combination of integrated optics and holography to generate a self-focusing image on the retina. The photonic integrated circuit used for the retinal projector is made of several passive photonic components fabricated with stoichiometric Si3N4: single-mode strip waveguides, variable radius bent waveguides, MMI couplers (Multi-Mode Interference), diffraction grating couplers and waveguide crossings. The photonic components are designed to work in the visible spectrum at λ = 532 nm. They are compact and generally show low losses, which are the two main requirements to easily insert the photonic integrated circuit on wearable glasses and enhance the image quality of the retinal projector. Our photonic components can also find applications in a variety of other fields related to the visible spectrum, such as biophotonics, optical phased arrays, visible light communication and more.
