In this work, we examine seven systems discovered by TESS, to see whether there is any room in those systems for an additional planet (or several) to lurk unseen between the two planets already confirmed therein. In five of those systems (namely HD 15337; HD 21749; HD 63433; HD 73583 and LTT 3780) we find that there is ample room for an undiscovered planet to move between those that have already been discovered. In other words, as they currently stand, those systems are not tightly packed. In stark contrast, the perturbative influence of the two known TOI-1670 planets is such that additional planets in between are ruled out. The final system, TOI 421, is more challenging. In the vast majority of cases, adding an Earth-mass planet to that system between the orbits of the known planets caused catastrophic instability. Just ~1.1% of our simulations of the modified system proved dynamically stable on a timescale of one million years. As a result, it seems that there is very little room between the two known planets in the TOI 421 system for an addition unseen world to exist, but the existence of such a planet can not be definitely ruled out on dynamical grounds alone., Comment: 21 pages; 8 figures; accepted for publication in AJ on 31st October 2024

The most prominent of the IRAS debris disk systems, $\alpha$ Lyrae (Vega), at a distance of 7.7 pc, has been observed by both the NIRCam and MIRI instruments on the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST). This paper describes NIRCam coronagraphic observations which have achieved F444W contrast levels of 3$\times10^{-7}$ at 1\arcsec\ (7.7 au), 1$\times10^{-7}$ at 2\arcsec\ (15 au) and few $\times 10^{-8}$ beyond 5\arcsec\ (38 au), corresponding to masses of $<$ 3, 2 and 0.5 MJup for a system age of 700 Myr. Two F444W objects are identified in the outer MIRI debris disk, around 48 au. One of these is detected by MIRI, appears to be extended and has a spectral energy distribution similar to those of distant extragalactic sources. The second one also appears extended in the NIRCam data suggestive of an extragalactic nature.The NIRCam limits within the inner disk (1\arcsec\ --10\arcsec) correspond to a model-dependent masses of 2$\sim$3 \mj. \citet{Su2024} argue that planets larger even 0.3 MJup would disrupt the smooth disk structure seen at MIRI wavelengths. Eight additional objects are found within 60\arcsec\ of Vega, but none has astrometric properties or colors consistent with planet candidates. These observations reach a level consistent with expected Jeans Mass limits. Deeper observations achieving contrast levels $<10^{-8}$ outside of $\sim$4\arcsec\ and reaching masses below that of Saturn are possible, but may not reveal a large population of new objects., Comment: 19 pages, 12 figures. accepted for Astronomical Journal

The purpose of this paper is to analyze a nonlinear elasticity model previously introduced by the authors for comparing two images, regarded as bounded open subsets of $\R^n$ together with associated vector-valued intensity maps. Optimal transformations between the images are sought as minimisers of an integral functional among orientation-preserving homeomorphisms. The existence of minimisers is proved under natural coercivity and polyconvexity conditions, assuming only that the intensity functions are bounded measurable. Variants of the existence theorem are also proved, first under the constraint that finite sets of landmark points in the two images are mapped one to the other, and second when one image is to be compared to an unknown part of another. The question is studied as to whether for images related by a linear mapping the unique minimizer is given by that linear mapping. For a natural class of functional integrands an example is given guaranteeing that this property holds for pairs of images in which the second is a scaling of the first by a constant factor. However for the property to hold for arbitrary pairs of linearly related images it is shown that the integrand has to depend on the gradient of the transformation as a convex function of its determinant alone. This suggests a new model in which the integrand depends also on second derivatives of the transformation, and an example is given for which both existence of minimizers is assured and the above property holds for all pairs of linearly related images., Comment: Minor changes and new references added

Hot and warm Jupiters might have undergone the same formation and evolution path, but the two populations exhibit different distributions of orbital parameters, challenging our understanding on their actual origin. The present work, which is the results of our warm Jupiters survey carried out with the CHIRON spectrograph within the KESPRINT collaboration, aims to address this challenge by studying two planets that could help bridge the gap between the two populations. We report the confirmation and mass determination of a hot Jupiter (orbital period shorter than 10 days), TOI-2420\,b, and a warm Jupiter, TOI-2485\,b. We performed a joint analysis using a wide variety of spectral and photometric data in order to characterize these planetary systems. We found that TOI-2420\,b has an orbital period of P$_{\rm b}$=5.8 days, a mass of M$_{\rm b}$=0.9 M$_{\rm J}$ and a radius of R$_{\rm b}$=1.3 R$_{\rm J}$, with a planetary density of 0.477 \gc; while TOI-2485\,b has an orbital period of P$_{\rm b}$=11.2 days, a mass of M$_{\rm b}$=2.4 M$_{\rm J}$ and a radius of R$_{\rm b}$=1.1 R$_{\rm J}$ with density 2.36 \gc. With current parameters, the migration history for TOI-2420\,b and TOI-2485\,b is unclear: the high-eccentricity migration scenarios cannot be ruled out, and TOI-2485\,b's characteristics may rather support this scenario.

Data fusion models based on Coupled Matrix and Tensor Factorizations (CMTF) have been effective tools for joint analysis of data from multiple sources. While the vast majority of CMTF models are based on the strictly multilinear CANDECOMP/PARAFAC (CP) tensor model, recently also the more flexible PARAFAC2 model has been integrated into CMTF models. PARAFAC2 tensor models can handle irregular/ragged tensors and have shown to be especially useful for modelling dynamic data with unaligned or irregular time profiles. However, existing PARAFAC2-based CMTF models have limitations in terms of possible regularizations on the factors and/or types of coupling between datasets. To address these limitations, in this paper we introduce a flexible algorithmic framework that fits PARAFAC2-based CMTF models using Alternating Optimization (AO) and the Alternating Direction Method of Multipliers (ADMM). The proposed framework allows to impose various constraints on all modes and linear couplings to other matrix-, CP- or PARAFAC2-models. Experiments on various simulated and a real dataset demonstrate the utility and versatility of the proposed framework as well as its benefits in terms of accuracy and efficiency in comparison with state-of-the-art methods., Comment: 15 pages, 15 figures,1 table

We report the discovery and validation of HD 21520 b, a transiting planet found with TESS and orbiting a bright G dwarf (V=9.2, $T_{eff} = 5871 \pm 62$ K, $R_{\star} = 1.04\pm 0.02\, R_{\odot}$). HD 21520 b was originally alerted as a system (TOI-4320) consisting of two planet candidates with periods of 703.6 and 46.4 days. However, our analysis supports instead a single-planet system with an orbital period of $25.1292\pm0.0001$ days and radius of $2.70 \pm 0.09\, R_{\oplus}$. Three full transits in sectors 4, 30 and 31 match this period and have transit depths and durations in agreement with each other, as does a partial transit in sector 3. We also observe transits using CHEOPS and LCOGT. SOAR and Gemini high-resolution imaging do not indicate the presence of any nearby companions, and MINERVA-Australis and CORALIE radial velocities rule out an on-target spectroscopic binary. Additionally, we use ESPRESSO radial velocities to obtain a tentative mass measurement of $7.9^{+3.2}_{-3.0}\, M_{\oplus}$, with a 3-$\sigma$ upper limit of 17.7 $M_{\oplus}$. Due to the bright nature of its host and likely significant gas envelope of the planet, HD 21520 b is a promising candidate for further mass measurements and for atmospheric characterization., Comment: Submitted to MNRAS

We present a new analysis of the KELT-24 system, comprising a well-aligned hot Jupiter, KELT-24~b, and a bright ($V=8.3$), nearby ($d=96.9~\mathrm{pc}$) F-type host star. KELT-24~b was independently discovered by two groups in 2019, with each reporting best-fit stellar parameters that were notably inconsistent. Here, we present three independent analyses of the KELT-24 system, each incorporating a broad range of photometric and spectroscopic data, including eight sectors of TESS photometry and more than 200 new radial velocities (RVs) from MINERVA. Two of these analyses use KELT-24's observed spectral energy distribution (SED) through a direct comparison to stellar evolutionary models, while our third analysis assumes an unknown additional body contributing to the observed broadband photometry and excludes the SED. Ultimately, we find that the models that include the SED are a poor fit to the available data, so we adopt the system parameters derived without it. We also highlight a single transit-like event observed by TESS, deemed likely to be an eclipsing binary bound to KELT-24, that will require follow-up observations to confirm. We discuss the potential of these additional bodies in the KELT-24 system as a possible explanation for the discrepancies between the results of the different modeling approaches, and explore the system for longer-period planets that may be weakly evident in the RV observations. There is currently significant interest in emulating the essential characteristics of black holes, such as their Hawking radiation or their optimal scrambling behavior, using condensed matter models. In this article, we investigate a chiral spin-chain, whose mean field theory effectively captures the behavior of Dirac fermions in the curved spacetime geometry of a black hole. We find that within the region of the chain that describe the interior of the black hole, strong correlations prevail giving rise to many-body chaotic dynamics. Employing out-of-time-order correlations as a diagnostic tool, we numerically compute the associated Lyapunov exponent. Intriguingly, we observe a linear increase in the Lyapunov exponent with temperature within the black hole's interior at low temperatures, indicative of optimal scrambling behavior. This contrasts with the quadratic temperature dependence exhibited by the spin-chain on the region outside the black hole. Our findings contribute to a deeper understanding of the interplay between black hole geometry and quantum chaos, offering insights into fundamental aspects of quantum gravity., Comment: 12 pages, 6 figures

As part of the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) Guaranteed Time Observation (GTO) program "Direct Imaging of YSOs" (program ID 1179), we use JWST NIRCam's direct imaging mode in F187N, F200W, F405N, and F410M to perform high contrast observations of the circumstellar structures surrounding the protostar HL Tau. The data reveal the known stellar envelope, outflow cavity, and streamers, but do not detect any companion candidates. We detect scattered light from an in-flowing spiral streamer previously detected in $\textrm{HCO}^+$ by ALMA, and part of the structure connected to the c-shaped outflow cavity. For detection limits in planet mass we use BEX evolutionary tracks when $M_\textrm{p}<2M_\textrm{J}$ and AMES-COND evolutionary tracks otherwise, assuming a planet age of 1 Myr (youngest available age). Inside the disk region, due to extended envelope emission, our point-source sensitivities are $\sim5$ mJy ($37~M_{\rm J}$) at 40 AU in F187N, and $\sim0.37$ mJy ($5.2~M_{\rm J}$) at 140 AU in F405N. Outside the disk region, the deepest limits we can reach are $\sim0.01$ mJy ($0.75~M_{\rm J}$) at a projected separation of $\sim525$ AU., Comment: 13 pages, 6 figures, 2 tables, accepted to AAS Astronomical Journal

The isolated globule B335 contains a single, low luminosity Class 0 protostar associated with a bipolar nebula and outflow system seen nearly perpendicular to its axis. We observed the innermost regions of this outflow as part of JWST/NIRCam GTO program 1187, primarily intended for wide-field slitless spectroscopy of background stars behind the globule. We find a system of expanding shock fronts with kinematic ages of only a few decades emerging symmetrically from the position of the embedded protostar, which is not directly detected at NIRCam wavelengths. The innermost and youngest of the shock fronts studied here shows strong emission from CO. The next older shock front shows less CO and the third shock front shows only H_2 emission in our data. This third and most distant of these inner shock fronts shows substantial evolution of its shape since it was last observed with high spatial resolution in 1996 with Keck/NIRC. This may be evidence of a faster internal shock catching up with a slower one and of the two shocks merging., Comment: This paper is accepted by The Astronomical Journal

We present JWST/NIRCam F187N, F200W, F405N and F410M direct imaging data of the disk surrounding SAO 206462. Previous images show a very structured disk, with a pair of spiral arms thought to be launched by one or more external perturbers. The spiral features are visible in three of the four filters, with the non-detection in F410M due to the large detector saturation radius. We detect with a signal-to-noise ratio of 4.4 a companion candidate (CC1) that, if on a coplanar circular orbit, would orbit SAO 206462 at a separation of $\sim300$ au, $2.25\sigma$ away from the predicted separation for the driver of the eastern spiral. According to the BEX models, CC1 has a mass of $M_\mathrm{CC1}=0.8\pm0.3~M_\mathrm{J}$. No other companion candidates were detected. At the location predicted by simulations of both spirals generated by a single massive companion, the NIRCam data exclude objects more massive than $\sim2.2~M_\mathrm{J}$ assuming the BEX evolutionary models. In terms of temperatures, the data are sensitive to objects with $T_{\text{eff}}\sim650-850$ K, when assuming planets emit like blackbodies ($R_\mathrm{p}$ between 1 and $3 R_\mathrm{J}$). From these results, we conclude that if the spirals are driven by gas giants, these must be either cold or embedded in circumplanetary material. In addition, the NIRCam data provide tight constraints on ongoing accretion processes. In the low extinction scenario we are sensitive to mass accretion rates of the order $\dot{M}\sim10^{-9} M_\mathrm{J}$ yr$^{-1}$. Thanks to the longer wavelengths used to search for emission lines, we reach unprecedented sensitivities to processes with $\dot{M}\sim10^{-7} M_\mathrm{J}$ yr$^{-1}$ even towards highly extincted environments ($A_\mathrm{V}\approx50$~mag)., Comment: 18 pages, 8 figures, 3 tables

MWC 758 is a young star hosting a spiral protoplanetary disk. The spirals are likely companion-driven, and two previously-identified candidate companions have been identified -- one at the end the Southern spiral arm at ~0.6 arcsec, and one interior to the gap at ~0.1 arcsec. With JWST/NIRCam, we provide new images of the disk and constraints on planets exterior to ~1". We detect the two-armed spiral disk, a known background star, and a spatially resolved background galaxy, but no clear companions. The candidates that have been reported are at separations that are not probed by our data with sensitivity sufficient to detect them -- nevertheless, these observations place new limits on companions down to ~2 Jupiter-masses at ~150 au and ~0.5 Jupiter masses at ~600 au. Owing to the unprecedented sensitivity of JWST and youth of the target, these are among the deepest mass-detection limits yet obtained through direct imaging observations, and provide new insights into the system's dynamical nature., Comment: Accepted for publication in AJ

Purpose: The aim of this study was to explore the feasibility of natural capital accounting for the purpose of strengthening sustainability claims by reporting entities. The study linked riparian land improvement to ecosystem services and tested options for incorporating natural capital into financial accounting practices, specifically on the balance sheet. Methodology: To test the approach, the study used a public asset manager (a water utility) with accountabilities to protect the environment including maintaining and enhancing riparian land assets. Research activities included stakeholder engagement, physical asset measurement, monetary valuation and financial recognition of natural capital income and assets. Natural capital income was estimated by modelling and valuing ecosystem services relating to stormwater filtration and carbon storage. Findings: This research described how a water utility could disclose changes in the natural capital assets they manage either through voluntary disclosures, in notes to the financial statements or as balance sheet items. We found that current accounting standards allowed the recognition of some types of environmental income and assets where ecosystem services were associated with cost savings. The proof-of-concept employed to estimate environmental income through ecosystem service modelling proved useful to strengthen sustainability claims or report financial returns on natural capital investment. Originality/value: This study applied financial accounting processes and principles to a realistic public asset management scenario with direct participation by the asset manager working together with academic researchers and a sub-national government environment management agency. In an era in which public postsecondary institutions increasingly face budget constraints, the state residency of students has become an important factor in complex decisions on tuition-setting policies and enrollment management. This report examines the current trends and impact of out-of-state tuition premiums -- defined as the additional amount of tuition and fees for nonresident students -- at public four-year institutions in the U.S. Regional approaches to reducing out-of-state tuition premiums are described, and past research on the effects of tuition premiums is summarized.

It is shown that a possibly infinite-valued proper lower semicontinuous convex function on ${\mathbb R}^n$ has an extension to a convex function on the half-space ${\mathbb R}^n\times[0,\infty)$ which is finite and smooth on the open half-space ${\mathbb R}^n\times(0,\infty)$. The result is applied to nonlinear elasticity, where it clarifies how the condition of polyconvexity of the free-energy density $\psi(Dy)$ is best expressed when $\psi(A)\to\infty$ as $\det A\to 0+$., Comment: To appear in Calc Var PDE

We report observations with the JWST/NIRCam coronagraph of the Fomalhaut system. This nearby A star hosts a complex debris disk system discovered by the IRAS satellite. Observations in F444W and F356W filters using the round 430R mask achieve a contrast ratio of ~ 4 x 10-7 at 1'' and ~ 4 x 10-8 outside of 3''. These observations reach a sensitivity limit <1 MJup across most of the disk region. Consistent with the hypothesis that Fomalhaut b is not a massive planet but is a dust cloud from a planetesimal collision, we do not detect it in either F356W or F444W (the latter band where a Jovian-sized planet should be bright). We have reliably detected 10 sources in and around Fomalhaut and its debris disk, all but one of which are coincident with Keck or HST sources seen in earlier coronagraphic imaging; we show them to be background objects, including the "Great Dust Cloud" identified in MIRI data. However, one of the objects, located at the edge of the inner dust disk seen in the MIRI images, has no obvious counterpart in imaging at earlier epochs and has a relatively red [F356W]-[F444W]>0.7 mag (Vega) color. Whether this object is a background galaxy, brown dwarf, or a Jovian mass planet in the Fomalhaut system will be determined by an approved Cycle 2 follow-up program. Finally, we set upper limits to any scattered light from the outer ring, placing a weak limit on the dust albedo at F356W and F444W., Comment: 24 pages, 17 figures

The Casimir force between dielectric bodies is well-understood, but not the Casimir force inside a dielectric, in particular its renormalization. We develop and analyse a simple model for the Casimir forces inside a medium that is completely free of renormalization and show then how renormalization emerges. We consider a one-dimensional chain of point particles interacting with each other by scattering the zero-point fluctuations of the electromagnetic field confined to one dimension. We develop a fast, efficient algorithm for calculating the forces on each particle and apply it to study the macroscopic limit of infinitely many, infinitely weak scatterers. The force density converges for piece-wise homogeneous media, but diverges in inhomogeneous media, which would cause instant collapse in theory. We argue that short-range counter forces in the medium prevent this collapse in reality. Their effect appears as the renormalization of the Casimir stress in dielectrics. Our simple model also allows us to derive an elementary analogue of the trace anomaly of quantum fields in curved space.

We report the discovery of two mini-Neptunes in near 2:1 resonance orbits ($P=7.610303$ d for HIP 113103 b and $P=14.245651$ d for HIP 113103 c) around the adolescent K-star HIP 113103 (TIC 121490076). The planet system was first identified from the TESS mission, and was confirmed via additional photometric and spectroscopic observations, including a $\sim$17.5 hour observation for the transits of both planets using ESA CHEOPS. We place $\leq4.5$ min and $\leq2.5$ min limits on the absence of transit timing variations over the three year photometric baseline, allowing further constraints on the orbital eccentricities of the system beyond that available from the photometric transit duration alone. With a planetary radius of $R_{p}=1.829^{+0.096}_{-0.067}\,R_{\oplus}$, HIP 113103 b resides within the radius gap, and this might provide invaluable information on the formation disparities between super-Earths and mini-Neptunes. Given the larger radius $R_{p}=2.40^{+0.10}_{-0.08}\,R_{\oplus}$ for HIP 113103 c, and close proximity of both planets to HIP 113103, it is likely that HIP 113103 b might have lost (or is still losing) its primordial atmosphere. We therefore present simulated atmospheric transmission spectra of both planets using JWST, HST, and Twinkle. It demonstrates a potential metallicity difference (due to differences in their evolution) would be a challenge to detect if the atmospheres are in chemical equilibrium. This report is an updated version of a report published in 2021 (ED623525). It examines whether levels of state funding for higher education are associated with college graduation rates, particularly among underrepresented racial and ethnic groups. The assessment is based on an analysis of state appropriations and the six-year graduation rates of all students as well as the graduation rates of three subgroups, including Black, Latinx, and White students. Using a six-year panel dataset of entering freshman cohorts at most public four-year institutions in the nation, the analyses show that graduation rates can be expected to change as a function of varying levels of state appropriations revenue within institutions. The first analysis examined the average effect of appropriations on graduation rates within institutions over the six-year period. The results indicated that a 10% increase in appropriations would yield a modest percentage point increase in graduation rates. While state appropriation levels have a positive effect on graduation rates on average, the second analysis demonstrated that the effect on graduation rates varies by institution. For the third analysis, tests were conducted to determine whether the effect of appropriations depended on three indicators of institutional type: Carnegie Classification, minority-serving status, and subsidy reliance. The results indicated that the effect of state appropriations does not vary according to whether an institution is classified as a bachelor's institution, master's university, research university, or Hispanic Serving Institution (HSI). However, the effect of appropriations on graduation rates was much larger at HBCUs than at other institutions. A 10% increase in appropriations was associated with a 1.55 greater percentage point increase in graduation rates of Black students at Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs).

An unidentified 3.55 keV X-ray line in stacked spectra of galaxies and clusters raises the interesting possibility that it originates from the decay of sterile neutrino dark matter. In this work, we explore mixed sterile neutrino dark matter models that combine cold dark matter and warmer sterile neutrino dark matter produced through lepton number-driven active-to-sterile neutrino transformation. We analyze the sensitivity of the sterile neutrino spectra on active-sterile mixing and on initial neutrino lepton numbers. Furthermore, we assess the viability of these models with estimates of the number of subhalos formed as the host sites of satellite galaxies., Comment: 10 pages, 12 figures
