Within this paper we will account for a cooperation between Ghent University based Assyriologists and computational linguists that has set up a pilot study to analyse the language used in Old Babylonian (OB) letters using Natural Language Processing (NLP) techniques. OB letters make up an interesting dataset because (1) they form an invaluable source for everyday vernacular language, and (2) more than 5000 have been recovered, many of which are accessible in transliteration and translation through the series Altbabylonische Briefe and the Cuneiform Digital Library Initiative. Based on a first batch of letters from OB Sippar, later extended by other Akkadian letters, we aim to develop machine learning approaches to perform semi-automatic text analysis and annotation of the letters. We will here present a Part-of-Speech (PoS) tag prediction model using machine learning. The input data is Akkadian in transliteration and the best performing model is a fine-tuned Multilingual BERT Transformer with Word embeddings (weighted avg F1: 90.19 %). When compared to the benchmark attempt of PoS tagging on a larger Akkadian corpus (97.67 %), it leaves room for improvement. However, analysing the results shows us that multilingual word embeddings improve the model performance and with an enlargement of the corpus targeting certain classes, we could considerably better the macro average F1 scores. Several cuneiform tablets from the Old Babylonian period (2004–1595 BCE) deal with blended families in Mesopotamia. This family situation resulted from various causes, such as death, divorce, or polygyny. It often created a cohabitation between step-children, leading to a significant challenge for the parents, regarding inheritance. This issue has not yet been studied from a legal perspective. This paper, based on the study of contracts, lawsuits, and letters, analyzes some of the legal solutions found by Mesopotamian parents, who anticipated situations of competition between heirs and protected their children, showing the value they attached to them. Despite being a major demographic component, our reconstructions of Old Babylonian social, economic, and legal history have tended not to consider how children fit into them. In part, this is because scholars' opinion was that syntheses at this level required the publication of the remaining unpublished sources. But this thesis will argue that, due to the more than 30,000 texts published by now, more can be teased out of Old Babylonian sources than previously supposed (for reasons of space, archaeological evidence is not considered). The main aim of this thesis is to introduce children into our reconstruction of Old Babylonian society (Iraq and Syria, 2000-1600 BC) and to provide insights into their lived experience. To do that it is also necessary to understand the Old Babylonian concept(s) of childhood, or the lack thereof. Research into several periods of history (up to Medieval and early modern times) has illustrated how our modern conception of childhood cannot be projected onto ancient evidence easily and has shown the need to conceptualise childhood within its respective sociocultural setting. The thesis explores the terminology and semantic fields associated with children, and monitors diachronic and regional variation thereof, in order to reconstruct Old Babylonian "age" classification systems and to understand in which situations or contexts a differentiation between young and old mattered. The thesis contains different case studies pertaining to children, each highlighting different aspects of the intersection between family and society, such as "child labour", the role of gender on children's experience and identity, as well as parent-child relations. Additionally, this thesis will provide a theoretical and methodological framework for the study of ancient Mesopotamian childhood that can be applied to other periods of Mesopotamian history as well.

This paper provides a first approach to the emotions people could feel during wars in the Old Babylonian period (ca. 2002–1595 BCE), a subject that has been generally overlooked in research. We pay special attention to soldiers but, as far as possible, we also look at how civilians felt throughout these events to gain a deeper understanding of their perspective. We conclude that texts expressing positive emotions toward war, mostly literature, pretended to naturalize an activity that caused fear. This last emotion appears to be especially documented in letters. Texts of this kind prove that soldiers in the Old Babylonian period felt fear during wars. We also analyze if war caused traumas and we suggest that war traumas were present in the Old Babylonian period. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

11. If a Lion Eats Him...

- Abstract
This article, starting from the analysis of the expression "if a lion kills/eats him" (i.e., a slave received on pledge), which appears in a limited number of surety contracts in the archive of the famous Balaĝunamḫe of Larsa (1829-1792 BC), gives a brief overview of the threat that lions posed not only to livestock but also to human beings in secondmillennium Mesopotamia. Letters and administrative documents inform us of attacks on animals and, more rarely, even people. By contrast, collections of laws and legal principles seem to deal exclusively with problems arising from lions attacking domestic animals, without any mention of attacks on humans. In the light of this brief investigation, the author concludes that the expression "if a lion kills/eats him" must be considered a unicum, since it is not found in any other real-life or school contract. She assumes that the scribe decided to add this formula to the liability clause of Balaĝunamḫe's surety contracts in order to cover as many scenarios as possible, including the chance of being eaten by a lion, clearly representing an event of force majeure. 13. The mathematics of canal construction in the kingdoms of Larsa and Babylon.

- Abstract
Mathematical texts describing canal construction and maintenance abound in ancient Mesopotamia, where irrigation was vital to crop production. Indeed, this land's survival was dependent upon irrigated agriculture. Intensification required new canals, which required the mobilization of significant resources. Old canals required maintenance, or they would silt up. This required planning and so surveyors and administrators needed to learn mathematical processes involved in planning and maintaining irrigation works. This paper examines these mathematical processes. It explores both mathematical texts from the Old Babylonian period (the beginning of the second millennium BCE in southern Iraq), as well as mathematical processes witnessed in administrative texts that deal with irrigation and excavation. It will be seen how well mathematical texts reflected administrative practice when it comes to canal maintenance. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Childlessness ,social identity ,Old Babylonian period ,nadītu women ,Cultural Sciences ,otherness - Abstract
In Old Babylonian society, nadītu and other women who held religious offices were not allowed to bear children. Traditionally, this taboo on childbearing has been explained as a taboo on sex (chastity) or a taboo on blood (cultic impurity). I believe these traditional explanations to be faulty and inadequate, and suggest an alternative approach based on the concepts of alterity and constructed social identity. By not fitting the norm of their social group, viz. women, by definition birth giving beings, they are ‘othered’ as non-birth-giving-beings, which indeed is the literal meaning of nadītu: ‘the fallow (woman).’ However, their ‘otherness’ is not conceived as negative or problematic, on the contrary, it added greatly to their social status as a privileged group within society. As such, their childlessness was an important part of their social identity.

- Abstract
This book examines education as a means to explore knowledge and literacy in the Old Babylonian period. It further employs a new method to research these topics. Contrary to numerous existing studies on the subject, the author examines elementary education globally, that is, in pursuit of Old Babylonian education in its entirety. Typically, education is examined in a piecemeal fashion. It's as if education centered on lexicography alone or mathematics alone. This work encompasses a view about educational content and knowledge systems, as opposed to only specific aspects or branches of them. In doing so, a characterization of institution and society is made possible allowing the work to open new general perspectives on Mesopotamian knowledge, literacy, and education.

– The discovery of new fragments of the Mari god-list in 1998-2000 as well as new readings proposed by different scholars since its publication lead to a better understanding of the list. For example, it is argued that the section of the Nin-deities is organized according to the principle of a life cycle. This article also highlights the affiliation of Mari god-list with other Old Babylonian god-lists, which form a group whose organization dates back to the 3rd millennium: god-lists from Isin, Mari, and Uruk as well as others of unknown provenance are interconnected through their main organization as well as through thematic groups of deities based on, among others, the motif of weeping mothers or the seven children of Enmešara. Finally, this article proposes several new readings in these lists and also aims to clarify the function of some minor deities during the Old Babylonian period, such as NINniĝar, Ninsig, Ninpiriĝ or Ninkur(a), through the analysis of their place in the different lists.

AbstractCultural Identity, Archaeology, and the Amorites of the Early Second Millennium BCE:An Analytical Paradigmatic ApproachbyMadeline Lawson PruittDoctor of Philosophy in Near Eastern StudiesUniversity of California, BerkeleyProfessor Benjamin Porter, Co-ChairProfessor Aaron Brody, Co-ChairAncient Near Eastern textual sources portray the Amorites as a group that arose in the span of a century at the beginning of the second millennium BCE from being obscure pastoral nomads on the periphery of Mesopotamian civilization to establishing a dynasty that ruled the region for four hundred years. Yet, according to a commonly-held scholarly view, they left no archaeologically discernible cultural imprint. This paradoxical understanding contributes to widely varied speculations about the nature of their group identity and has generated a lack of consensus that impedes the development of further insights about the group and, consequently, other aspects of Ancient Near Eastern history and cultures. The interpretation of archaeological evidence for cultural identity is in itself a problematized issue. Consideration of the factors involved in the Amorite scenario indicates the need for an analytical approach to cultural identity that will provide a foundation from which the multiple evidentiary dimensions can be considered on common ground. Drawing upon interdisciplinary insights from such fields as social psychology, cognitive science, and sociology, in addition to anthropology, this project develops a relational approach to identity at four levels—personal, individual, group, and categorical. From that perspective, cultural identity is found to be a categorical identification with a matrix of interrelated features that is greater than the sum of its constituent elements. In combination with the theoretical lenses of materiality, social memory, and landscape theory from the social archaeology toolkit, the Self Other approach advanced in this thesis allows the various compositional aspects of cultural identity to be analyzed holistically. It provides a framework through which the textual, visual, and material evidence can be considered in light of the underlying identity processes at work. In application to the singularly complex Amorite paradox, the efficacy of the framework is validated by revealing—on an analytical basis grounded in established theory and methods—that there is more than sufficient evidence for viewing the Amorites as an ethnic group. These results, which are derived from applying the paradigm to the data set of Amorite identity markers, provide a starting point for more contextualized studies of the evidence from specific sites and assemblages in both synchronic and diachronic cases. The paradigm is proposed as an analytical tool that will allow for a grounded commonality that can move the field closer toward consensus and to continued advancements in understanding the history of the Ancient Near East. Additionally, it has the potential to facilitate research into the cultural identity of other groups in different places and times.

In the following communication, the results of collations conducted on the Old Babylonian archival documents of the Altorientalisches Institut of the Universität Leipzig in 2014 are presented. These results allow for a more precise determination of the tablets’ dates, places of origin, as well as their connections to already-known individuals’ activities and dossiers (‚archives‘). The importance of this data is crucial, because all of the material was acquired on the antiquities market early on in the 20th century, and therefore nothing is known about the archaeological context of these tablets. The paper closes with remarks on three Ur III documents of the same collection. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This article presents some reflections on slavery in the Ancient Near East during the Old Babylonian period. Particular attention is paid to an analysis of the sources for prisoners of war originating from Uruk in which the bīt asīrī , "the house of prisoners of war" is mentioned. These texts from the bīt asīrī date to the short reign of Rīm-Anum, who held power in Uruk for about eighteen months, between 1742 and 1740 BC. The use of war prisoners as labor force and slaves is examined in detail. It is suggested that the bīt asīrī was an institutional entity, managed by the state, and moreover that it was connected with the production of flour. This investigation also makes comparisons with other references to prisons in the Ancient Near East and especially in the Bible. Lastly, the ways in which war captives could be freed are discussed. This thesis is a philological study of redemption as it was practiced in Mesopotamia in the Old Babylonian period (c. 2000-1600 BC). It reconstructs, edits, and analyses texts and private archives showing the working of this traditional right in a number of local traditions in the Old Babylonian period. It contributes to the study of redemption of persons a philological treatment of key technical terms. The traditional right of redemption also had a royal analogue, and chapter 4 of the thesis provides a critical treatment of a putative royal edict from the kingdom of Larsa mandating redemption based on a new classification of the text.

International audience; Education in Mesopotamia is remarkably well documented. The reason for this abundance of sources is the nature of the writing support that was used in the Ancient Near East, namely, clay, an indestructible material that has survived from antiquity to the present day. School exercises have been found by the tens of thousands during archaeological excavations in Iraq, Syria, and Iran. The work of masters left traces on many documents, for example, mathematical exercises for beginners or sets of problems for advanced students. These traces allow us to partly reconstruct the organization of teaching. In this paper, I focus on didactical structures conveyed by sets of mathematical texts from diverse levels of education. I show the diversity of these structures, distinguishing, for example, the curricula produced by long-term institutional mechanisms, from progressions reflecting specific teaching projects of masters. I try to grasp the mathematical notions conveyed by the different didactical structures. To do this, I rely on homogeneous sets of documents produced by quite well-identified communities of students or masters. A discussion on the relevance of the concept of “resource system” in the context of scribal schools is proposed in conclusion.

International audience; In this article are published three clay tablets kept in the Lloyd Cotsen Cuneiform Tablets Collection (UCLA) dating to the early second millennium BCE. These tablets are copies of an Akkadian model letter known at first only through two duplicates kept in a private collection in Paris and published in 2002 by Pierre Marello. The latter understood the tablets from Paris as real archival letters, but I showed that all five duplicates are school exercises. Found during illegal excavations, they probably come from the same locus in Iraq. After editing the three tablets from UCLA, I compared the five duplicates from Paris and Los Angeles and explored their school setting. Finally, what scribes learned by copying these texts and the connection between Old Babylonian school letters and real contemporary letters are investigated.

In general, borders represent not only a physical issue but also a social one. All over time, social actors circulated through borders implicitly or explicitly forced by the political powers (tribe, state, etc.). In oriental antiquity, the borders (pat.um) of the realms were unstable: they were in constant mutation and movement. For this reason, it is necessary to investigate the circulation of people through such borders in order to achieve a better understanding of them. In the syro-mesopotamian area during the Old Babylonian period, borders between realms, cities and villages were an important axis of the socio-political layout. At this time, the kingdom of Mari gives us a signifi cant amount of written sources where we can track and analyze people's movements between kingdoms. In this paper, we want to inquire into some topics related with forced circulation of people set on the premise that not all the movements that were considered voluntary were actually so. International audience; This chapter offers an analysis of the segmentation of texts into lists of mathematical problems written on clay tablets during the Old Babylonian period (early second millennium BCE). The study focuses on mathematical series texts, that is, long lists of statements written on several numbered tablets. Two aspects are considered: material segmentation (sections, columns, tablets...) and textual segmentation (statements, groups of statements), as well as the relationship between these two aspects. It is shown that the analysis of parts of text may be a powerful tool for the reconstruction of the entire series and for detecting the operations on texts which produced the series.

The first volume of Materials on toponymy and topography presents results of the French-German collaboration on the historical geography of Upper Mesopotamia in the 2nd millennium BCE. The three parts present archeological and textual data which provide a basis for a global approach to the socio-political history of the region. A paper-version of the three volumes can be ordered on the webside of the SEPOA publications. MTT I/1 provides the attestations, a selected bibliography, and short-notes on the localization and historica importance for almost 700 toponyms in Upper-Mesopotamia, cross-referenced with the Middle Assyrian toponyms and archeological sites presented in MTT I/2 and MTT I/3.
