We report terahertz (THz)-pump/mid-infrared probe near-field studies on Si-doped GaAs–InGaAs core–shell nanowires utilizing THz radiation from the free-electron laser FELBE. Upon THz excitation of free carriers, we observe a red shift of the plasma resonance in both amplitude and phase spectra, which we attribute to the heating of electrons in the conduction band. The simulation of heated electron distributions anticipates a significant electron population in both the L- and X-valleys. The two-temperature model is utilized for quantitative analysis of the dynamics of the electron gas temperature under THz pumping at various power levels.

High-quality epitaxial nanowires (NWs) based on III–V semiconductors such as (In)GaAs offer the possibility to fabricate ultrafast optical devices due to their direct bandgap and the high electron mobility. Contactless investigation of the average charge carrier concentration and mobility in NWs is enabled by terahertz time domain spectroscopy [1]. The determination of these properties locally on individual NWs can be carried out by scattering type scanning near-field optical microscopy (s-SNOM), which provides spatial resolution far beyond the diffraction limit. In optical-pump THz-probe experiments the response of photoexcited carriers has been investigated with 10 nm and 10 fs spatial and temporal resolution [2]. Time-resolved studies are still missing in both far-field and near-field spectroscopy for doped nanowires excited by THz radiation via intraband excitation. Here we report on THz-pump MIR-probe s SNOM studies on highly-doped GaAs/InGaAs core-shell NWs utilizing intense narrowband THz radiation from the free-electron laser (FEL) FELBE. The samples under study are Si-doped GaAs-InGaAs core-shell NWs grown by molecular beam epitaxy. They consist of a 25-nm-thick GaAs core and an 80-nm-thick In0.44Ga0.56As shell that is homogeneously doped with Si at a concentration of 9 × 1018 cm-3. For s-SNOM studies, these NWs are transferred to a (100) Si substrate and dispersed randomly over the substrate. The experiment was carried out with an s-SNOM setup from Neaspec GmbH equipped with a broadband difference-frequency generation (DFG) source (5 – 15 µm; 20 – 60 THz). For the pump-probe measurements the laser oscillator of the DFG source was synchronized to the FEL and the time delay between the pulses was varied by an optical delay line. A low-pass filter suppresses the scattered THz FEL radiation from the nano-FTIR unit (Fig 1a). In the unpumped case, a sharp plasma edge around 130 meV is observed. Cadmium (Cd) adversely affects human health by entering the food chainviaanthropogenic activity. In order to mitigate risk, a better understanding of the biogeochemical mechanisms limiting Cd mobility in the environment is needed. While Cd is not redox-active, Cd speciation varies (i.e., aqueous, complexed, adsorbed), and influences mobility. Here, the cycling of Cd in relation to initial speciation during the growth ofGeobacter sulfurreducenswas studied. Either fumarate or ferrihydrite (Fh) was provided as an electron acceptor and Cd was present as: (1) an aqueous cation, (2) an aqueous complex with cysteine, which is often present in metal stressed soil environments, or (3) adsorbed to Fh. During microbial Fe(iii) reduction, the removal of Cd was substantial (similar to 80% removal), despite extensive Fe(ii) production (ratio Fe(ii)(total) : Fe-total= 0.8). When fumarate was the electron acceptor, there was higher removal from solution when Cd was complexed with cysteine (97-100% removal) compared to aqueous Cd (34-50%) removal. Confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM) demonstrated the formation of exopolymeric substances (EPS) in all conditions and that Cd was correlated with EPS in the absence of Fe minerals (r= 0.51-0.56). Most notable is that aqueous Cd was more strongly correlated withGeobactercells (r= 0.72) compared to Cd-cysteine complexes (r= 0.51). This work demonstrates that Cd interactions with cell surfaces and EPS, and Cd solubility during metabolic activity are dependent upon initial speciation. These processes may be especially important in soil environments where sulfur is limited and Fe and organic carbon are abundant.

Much biodiversity data is collected worldwide, but it remains challenging to assemble the scattered knowledge for assessing biodiversity status and trends. The concept of Essential Biodiversity Variables (EBVs) was introduced to structure biodiversity monitoring globally, and to harmonize and standardize biodiversity data from disparate sources to capture a minimum set of critical variables required to study, report and manage biodiversity change. Here, we assess the challenges of a ‘Big Data’ approach to building global EBV data products across taxa and spatiotemporal scales, focusing on species distribution and abundance. The majority of currently available data on species distributions derives from incidentally reported observations or from surveys where presence-only or presence–absence data are sampled repeatedly with standardized protocols. Most abundance data come from opportunistic population counts or from population time series using standardized protocols (e.g. repeated surveys of the same population from single or multiple sites). Enormous complexity exists in integrating these heterogeneous, multi-source data sets across space, time, taxa and different sampling methods. Integration of such data into global EBV data products requires correcting biases introduced by imperfect detection and varying sampling effort, dealing with different spatial resolution and extents, harmonizing measurement units from different data sources or sampling methods, applying statistical tools and models for spatial inter- or extrapolation, and quantifying sources of uncertainty and errors in data and models. To support the development of EBVs by the Group on Earth Observations Biodiversity Observation Network (GEO BON), we identify 11 key workflow steps that will operationalize the process of building EBV data products within and across research infrastructures worldwide. We report on an outburst of the high mass X-ray binary 4U 0115+634 with a pulse period of 3.6 s in 2008 March/April as observed with RXTE and INTEGRAL. During the outburst the neutron star's luminosity varied by a factor of 10 in the 3-50 keV band. In agreement with earlier work we find evidence of five cyclotron resonance scattering features at 10.7, 21.8, 35.5, 46.7, and 59.7 keV. Previous work had found an anticorrelation between the fundamental cyclotron line energy and the X-ray flux. We show that this apparent anticorrelation is probably due to the unphysical interplay of parameters of the cyclotron line with the continuum models used previously, e.g., the negative and positive exponent power law (NPEX). For this model, we show that cyclotron line modeling erroneously leads to describing part of the exponential cutoff and the continuum variability, and not the cyclotron lines. When the X-ray continuum is modeled with a simple exponentially cutoff power law modified by a Gaussian emission feature around 10 keV the correlation between the line energy and the flux vanishes, and the line parameters remain virtually constant over the outburst.
