The entire eigenvalue spectrum of the operators on the squashed $S^7$ that appear in the Freund-Rubin compactification of eleven-dimensional supergravity was recently derived in [1 - 4]. Here we give a brief account of this work which started with [1] where the complete spectrum of irreducible isometry representations of the fields in $AdS_4$ was derived for the squashed $S^7$ compactification. The operator spectra determine the mass spectrum of the fields in $AdS_4$ and are important for the corresponding $\mathcal{N} =1$ supermultiplet structure which appears in two versions depending on the choice of boundary conditions. By an orientation-flip on the squashed $S^7$ we can also determine the spectrum of the corresponding non-supersymmetric theory, and, e.g., its spectrum of marginal operators on the boundary of $AdS_4$ which may have some relevance for the $AdS$ stability conjecture in the swampland program. The role of singletons is discussed and a possible new Higgsing phenomenon turning them into bulk fields is suggested. Details are here given primarily for 2-forms and comments are made on the key role of $G_2$ and octonions for the structure of the operator equations and mode functions on the squashed $S^7$. Some important features of these improved methods were obtained in Joel Karlsson's 2021 MSc thesis [5]. The two-watchman route problem is that of computing a pair of closed tours in an environment so that the two tours together see the whole environment and some length measure on the two tours is minimized. Two standard measures are: the minmax measure, where we want the tours where the longest of them has smallest length, and the minsum measure, where we want the tours for which the sum of their lengths is the smallest. It is known that computing a minmax two-watchman route is NP-hard for simple rectilinear polygons and thus also for simple polygons. Also, any c-approximation algorithm for the minmax two-watchman route is automatically a 2c-approximation algorithm for the minsum two-watchman route. We exhibit two constant factor approximation algorithms for computing minmax two-watchman routes in simple polygons with approximation factors 5.969 and 11.939, having running times O(n^8) and O(n^4) respectively, where n is the number of vertices of the polygon. We also use the same techniques to obtain a 6.922-approximation for the fixed two-watchman route problem running in O(n^2) time, i.e., when two starting points of the two tours are given as input., Comment: 36 pages, 14 figures

We study the Art Gallery Problem under $k$-hop visibility in polyominoes. In this visibility model, two unit squares of a polyomino can see each other if and only if the shortest path between the respective vertices in the dual graph of the polyomino has length at most $k$. In this paper, we show that the VC dimension of this problem is $3$ in simple polyominoes, and $4$ in polyominoes with holes. Furthermore, we provide a reduction from Planar Monotone 3Sat, thereby showing that the problem is NP-complete even in thin polyominoes (i.e., polyominoes that do not a contain a $2\times 2$ block of cells). Complementarily, we present a linear-time $4$-approximation algorithm for simple $2$-thin polyominoes (which do not contain a $3\times 3$ block of cells) for all $k\in \mathbb{N}$., Comment: 17 pages, 11 figures. The squashed seven-sphere operator spectrum is completed by deriving the spectrum of the spin-3/2 operator. The implications of the results for the $AdS_4$ $\mathcal{N} = 1$ supermultiplets obtained from compactification of eleven-dimensional supergravity are analysed. The weak $G_2$ holonomy plays an important role when solving the eigenvalue equations on the squashed sphere. Here, a novel and more universal algebraic approach to the whole eigenvalue problem on coset manifolds is provided. Having obtained full control of all the operator spectra, we can finally determine the irreps $D(E_0, s)$ for all supermultiplets in the left-squashed vacuum. This includes an analysis of possible boundary conditions. By performing an orientation flip on the seven-sphere, we also obtain the full spectrum for the non-supersymmetric right-squashed compactification which is of interest in the swampland context and in particular for the $AdS$ swampland conjecture. Here, a number of boundary condition ambiguities arise making the analysis of dual marginal operators somewhat involved. Placing a minimum number of guards on a given watchman route in a polygonal domain is called the {\em minimum vision points problem}. We prove that finding the minimum number of vision points on a shortest watchman route in a simple polygon is APX-Hard. We then extend the proof to the class of rectilinear polygons having at most three dent orientations., Comment: 9 pages, 5 figures. We study the art gallery problem for opposing half guards: guards that can either see to their left or to their right only. We present art gallery theorems, show that the location of half guards in 2-guardable polygons is not restricted to extensions, show that the problem is NP-hard in monotone polygons, and present approximation algorithms for spiral and staircase polygons., Comment: 17 pages, 12 figures. We consider the online two-dimensional vector packing problem, showing a lower bound of $11/5$ on the competitive ratio of any {\sc AnyFit} strategy for the problem. We provide strategies with competitive ratio $\max\!\left\{2,6\big/\big(1+3\tan(\pi/4-\gamma/2)\big)+\epsilon\right\}$ and logarithmic advice, for any instance where all the input vectors are restricted to have angles in the range $[\pi/4-\gamma/2,\pi/4+\gamma/2]$, for $0\leq\gamma<\pi/3$ and $\max\left\{5/2,4\big/\big(1+2\tan(\pi/4-\gamma/2)\big)+\epsilon\right\}$ and logarithmic advice, for any instance where all the input vectors are restricted to have angles in the range $[\pi/4-\gamma/2,\pi/4+\gamma/2]$, for $0\leq\gamma\leq\pi/3$. In addition, we give a $5/2$-competitive strategy also using logarithmic advice for the unrestricted vectors case. We consider the watchman route problem for a $k$-transmitter watchman: standing at point $p$ in a polygon $P$, the watchman can see $q\in P$ if $\overline{pq}$ intersects $P$'s boundary at most $k$ times -- $q$ is $k$-visible to $p$. Traveling along the $k$-transmitter watchman route, either all points in $P$ or a discrete set of points $S\subset P$ must be $k$-visible to the watchman. We aim for minimizing the length of the $k$-transmitter watchman route. We show that even in simple polygons the shortest $k$-transmitter watchman route problem for a discrete set of points $S\subset P$ is NP-complete and cannot be approximated to within a logarithmic factor (unless P=NP), both with and without a given starting point. Online routing in a planar embedded graph is central to a number of fields and has been studied extensively in the literature. For most planar graphs no $O(1)$-competitive online routing algorithm exists. A notable exception is the Delaunay triangulation for which Bose and Morin [Online routing in triangulations. SIAM Journal on Computing, 33(4):937-951, 2004] showed that there exists an online routing algorithm that is $O(1)$-competitive. However, a Delaunay triangulation can have $\Omega(n)$ vertex degree and a total weight that is a linear factor greater than the weight of a minimum spanning tree. We show a simple construction, given a set $V$ of $n$ points in the Euclidean plane, of a planar geometric graph on $V$ that has small weight (within a constant factor of the weight of a minimum spanning tree on $V$), constant degree, and that admits a local routing strategy that is $O(1)$-competitive. Moreover, the technique used to bound the weight works generally for any planar geometric graph whilst preserving the admission of an $O(1)$-competitive routing strategy.

In the context of three-dimensional conformal higher spin theory we derive, in the frame field formulation, the full non-linear spin 3 Cotton equation coupled to spin 2. This is done by solving the corresponding Chern-Simons gauge theory system of equations, that is, using $F=0$ to eliminate all auxiliary fields and thus expressing the Cotton equation in terms of just the spin 3 frame field and spin 2 covariant derivatives and tensors (Schouten). In this derivation we neglect the spin 4 and higher spin sectors and approximate the star product commutator by a Poisson bracket. The resulting spin 3 Cotton equation is complicated but can be related to linearized versions in the metric formulation obtained previously by other authors. The expected symmetry (spin 3 "translation", "Lorentz" and "dilatation") properties are verified for Cotton and other relevant tensors but some perhaps unexpected features emerge in the process, in particular in relation to the non-linear equations. We discuss the structure of this non-linear spin 3 Cotton equation but its explicit form is only presented here, in an exact but not completely refined version, in appended files obtained by computer algebra methods. We propose field equations for the conformal higher spin system in three dimensions coupled to a conformal scalar field with a sixth order potential. Both the higher spin equation and the unfolded equation for the scalar field have source terms and are based on a conformal higher spin algebra which we treat as an expansion in multi-commutators. Explicit expressions for the source terms are suggested and subjected to some simple tests. We also discuss a cascading relation between the Chern-Simons action for the higher spin gauge theory and an action containing a term for each spin that generalizes the spin 2 Chern-Simons action in terms of the spin connection expressed in terms of the frame field. Clique clustering is the problem of partitioning the vertices of a graph into disjoint clusters, where each cluster forms a clique in the graph, while optimizing some objective function. In online clustering, the input graph is given one vertex at a time, and any vertices that have previously been clustered together are not allowed to be separated. The goal is to maintain a clustering with an objective value close to the optimal solution. For the variant where we want to maximize the number of edges in the clusters, we propose an online strategy based on the doubling technique. It has an asymptotic competitive ratio at most 15.646 and an absolute competitive ratio at most 22.641. We also show that no deterministic strategy can have an asymptotic competitive ratio better than 6. For the variant where we want to minimize the number of edges between clusters, we show that the deterministic competitive ratio of the problem is $n-\omega(1)$, where n is the number of vertices in the graph., Comment: This paper combines and extends the results from 2 conference publications at CIAC 2013 and CIAC 2015

A $Q$-exact off-shell action is constructed for twisted abelian (2,0) theory on a Lorentzian six-manifold of the form $M_{1,5} = C\times M_4$, where $C$ is a flat two-manifold and $M_4$ is a general Euclidean four-manifold. The properties of this formulation, which is obtained by introducing two auxiliary fields, can be summarised by a commutative diagram where the Lagrangian and its stress-tensor arise from the $Q$-variation of two fermionic quantities $V$ and $\lambda^{\mu\nu}$. In this note we discuss some aspects of the frame formulation of conformal higher spins in three dimensions. We give some exact formulae for the coupled spin two - spin three part of the full higher spin theory and propose a star product Lagrangian for all spins from two and up. Since there is no consistent Lagrangian formulation based on the Poisson bracket we start the construction from the field equations in this approximation of the star product. The higher spin algebra is then realized in terms of classical variables which leads to certain important simplifications that we take advantage of. The suggested structure of the all-spin Lagrangian given here is, however, obtained using an expansion of the star product beyond the Poisson bracket in terms of multi-commutators and the Lagrangian should be viewed as a starting point for the derivation of the full theory based on a star product. How to do this is explained as well as how to include the coupling to scalar fields. In this paper we discuss some special (critical) background solutions that arise in topological gauged ${\mathcal N}=8$ three-dimensional CFTs with SO(N) gauge group. These solutions solve the TMG equations (containing the parameters $\mu$ and $l$) for a certain set of values of $\mu l$ obtained by varying the number of scalar fields with a VEV. Apart from Minkowski, chiral round $AdS_3$ and null-warped $AdS_3$ (or Schr\"odinger(z=2)) we identify also a more exotic solution recently found in $TMG$ by Ertl, Grumiller and Johansson. We also discuss the spectrum, symmetry breaking pattern and the supermultiplet structure in the various backgrounds and argue that some properties are due to their common origin in a conformal phase. Some of the scalar fields, including all higgsed ones, turn out to satisfy three-dimensional singleton field equations. Damages are created in a sacrificial layer of silicon dioxide by ion implantation to enhance the etch rate of silicon-dioxide in liquid and vapor phase hydrofluoric acid. The etch rate ratio between implanted and unimplanted silicon dioxide is more than 150 in vapor hydrofluoric acid (VHF). This feature is of interest to greatly reduce the underetch of microelectromechanical systems anchors. Based on the experimentally extracted etch rate of unimplanted and implanted silicon dioxide, the patterning of the sacrificial layer can be predicted by simulation.

By coupling {\cal N}=8 superconformal matter to {\cal N}=8 superconformal Chern-Simons gravity in three dimensions we obtain theories with novel terms in the scalar potential leading to AdS_3 solutions and superconformal symmetry breaking. If we start from the theory derived by Bagger, Lambert and Gustavsson, our coupled theory either inherits the SO(4) gauge group or reduces it to SO(3). If the construction is instead based on a free matter theory we find that the gravitational topological gauging also requires the introduction of a Chern-Simons gauge sector resulting in a consistent theory for any SO(N) gauge group., Comment: 46 pages, typos corrected, references added, discussion on background solutions in section 2.4 extended

In this note we review the construction of topologically gauged M2 branes with 6 supersymmetries and discuss some of its properties. This is done using the 3-algebra formulation thereby covering all possible gauge groups. We will elaborate upon 1) the fundamental identity and its solutions noting, provided these gauged theories describe stacks of branes, the case of a single brane, 2) the chiral point solution to the field equations (occuring even for a single brane) that breaks the superconformal symmetries down to those of AdS_3 (TMG) supergravity, 3) physical parameters and how they scale in the compactification from 11d to 10d and give rise to matter theories in curved space-times, and finally 4) a more speculative comment on "sequential AdS/CFT". Here we propose that the superconformal symmetry breaking in topologically gauged theories leads to the sequence AdS_4/CFT_3 -> AdS_3/CFT_2 and that the higgsing in the 3d boundary theory is related to a change of foliation in the AdS_4 bulk theory., Comment: 21 pages, based on talks at Johns Hopkins Workshop, Budapest, June 2011 and QTS7, Prague, August 2011

We give a superspace description of D=3, N=8 supergravity. The formulation is off-shell in the sense that the equations of motion are not implied by the superspace constraints (but an action principle is not given). The multiplet structure is unconventional, which we connect to the existence of a "Dragon window", that is modules occurring in the supercurvature but not in the supertorsion. According to Dragon's theorem this cannot happen above three dimensions. We present the higgsing of three-dimensional N=6 superconformal ABJM type theories coupled to conformal supergravity, so called topologically gauged ABJM theory, thus providing a gravitational extension of previous work on the relation between N M2 and N D2-branes. The resulting N=6 supergravity theory appears at a chiral point similar to that of three-dimensional chiral gravity introduced recently by Li, Song and Strominger, but with the opposite sign for the Ricci scalar term in the lagrangian. We identify the supersymmetry in the broken phase as a particular linear combination of the supersymmetry and special conformal supersymmetry in the original topologically gauged ABJM theory. Type IIA string theory compactified on a rigid Calabi-Yau threefold gives rise to a classical moduli space that carries an isometric action of U(2,1). Various quantum corrections break this continuous isometry to a discrete subgroup. Focussing on the case where the intermediate Jacobian of the Calabi-Yau admits complex multiplication by the ring of quadratic imaginary integers O_d, we argue that the remaining quantum duality group is an arithmetic Picard modular group PU(2,1;O_d). Based on this proposal we construct an Eisenstein series invariant under this duality group and study its non-Abelian Fourier expansion. This allows the prediction of non-perturbative effects, notably the contribution of D2- and NS5-brane instantons.
