Abstract

Mechanical forces influence cellular proliferation, differentiation, tissue morphogenesis, and functional expression within the body. To comprehend the impact of these forces on living organisms, their quantification is essential. This study introduces a novel microdifferential pressure measurement device tailored for cellular-scale pressure assessments. The device comprises a glass substrate and a microchannel constructed of polydimethylsiloxane, polytetrafluoroethylene tubes, a glass capillary, and a microsyringe pump. This device obviates the need for electrical measurements, relying solely on the displacement of ultrapure water within the microchannel to assess the micropressure in embryos. First, the device was subjected to arbitrary pressures, and the relationship between the pressure and the displacement of ultrapure water in the microchannel was determined. Calibration results showed that the displacement dx [μm] could be calculated from the pressure P [Pa] using the equation dx = 0.36 P. The coefficient of determination was shown to be 0.87, indicating a linear response. When utilized to measure brain ventricular pressure in mouse embryos, the fabricated device yielded an average pressure reading of 1313 ± 640 Pa. This device can facilitate the measurement of pressure within microcavities in living tissues and other areas requiring precise and localized pressure evaluations. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

29. Effect of Wiping Pressure on Body Hygiene of Bed Bath with a Wet Washcloth

Abstract

Introduction: Dirt on the skin can be removed by friction, and the properties of wiping materials and wiping pressure are related to the friction coefficient of the skin. In the current study, we examined the possible relationships between wiping pressure and skin hygiene. Materials and Methods: The study subject was one healthy female in her twenties. The wiping pressure was measured using a pressure-sensitive film sheet attached to the skin. An adenosine triphosphate hygiene monitoring test was conducted as an indicator of skin hygiene, which was measured as the level of relative light units (RLU). We conducted an experiment 10 times on the left and right lower legs. A correlation analysis was conducted to examine the relationship between RLU level and wiping pressure. Results: No significant correlation was found between the reduction in RLU level by bed bathing and wiping pressure (r = −0.04; P = 0.79). Conclusion: The current findings did not indicate a clear relationship between wiping pressure and removing dirt from the skin during a bed bath. These results suggest the possibility that dirt can be removed and hygiene can be maintained regardless of the wiping pressure.

Abstract

Tissue formation from heterogeneous cell types, similar to those in vivo, is an important technique for development of new drugs and formation of artificial organs. In vivo tissues are complex arrangements of heterogeneous cells that interact with each other. To create such tissues in vitro, it is essential to develop a technique that arranges heterogeneous cells in an arbitrary configuration. Currently, we are developing a new gel patterning technique to create effective cell micropatterns by using photolithography and alginate gel, which inhibits cellular adhesion. In this study, we considered that a more flexible gel patterning technique was required for creating order-made formations of complex tissues. We created gel patterns by removing the alginate gel using laser processing, and cells were cultured on the formed patterns. Complex heterogeneous cell patterns were achieved by adjusting various technical parameters such as the laser power, spot diameter, and alginate gel film thickness. Abstract

Lower third molar extraction is the most common surgical treatment among routine dental and oral surgical procedures. while the surgical procedures for lower third molar extraction are well established, the difficulty of tooth extraction and the frequency of postoperative complications differ depending on the patient’s background. To establish a management protocol for the lower third molars, the prevalence of and risk factors for postoperative complications after lower third molar extraction were investigated in a large number of Japanese patients in a multicenter prospective study. During 6 consecutive months in 2020, 1826 lower third molar extractions were performed at the 20 participating institutions. The medical records of the patients were reviewed, and relevant data were extracted. The prevalence of and risk factors for postoperative complications were analyzed. The prevalence of postoperative complications after lower third molar extraction was 10.0%. Multivariate analysis indicated that age (≤32 vs >32, odds ratio [OR]: 1.428, 95% confidence interval [95% CI]: 1.040–1.962, P < .05), the radiographic anatomical relationship between the tooth roots and mandibular canal (overlapping of the roots and canal vs no close anatomical relationship between the roots and the superior border of the canal, OR: 2.078, 95% CI: 1.333–3.238, P < .01; overlapping of the roots and canal vs roots impinging on the superior border of the canal, OR: 1.599, 95% CI: 1.050–2.435, P < .05), and impaction depth according to the Pell and Gregory classification (position C vs position A, OR: 3.7622, 95% CI: 2.079–6.310, P < .001; position C vs position B, OR: 2.574, 95% CI: 1.574–4.210, P < .001) are significant independent risk factors for postoperative complications after lower third molar extraction. These results suggested that higher age and a deeply impacted tooth might be significant independent risk factors for postoperative complications after lower third molar extraction.
