Precision measurements with ultracold atoms and molecules are primed to probe beyond-the-Standard Model physics. Isotopologues of homonuclear molecules are a natural testbed for new Yukawa-type mass-dependent forces at nanometer scales, complementing existing mesoscopic-body and neutron scattering experiments. Here we propose using isotopic shift measurements in molecular lattice clocks to constrain these new interactions from new massive scalar particles in keV$/c^2$ range: the new interaction would impart an extra isotopic shift to molecular levels on top of one predicted by the Standard Model. For the strontium dimer, a Hz-level agreement between experiment and theory could constrain the coupling of the new particles to hadrons by up to an order-of-magnitude over the most stringent existing experiments., Comment: 7 pages, 4 figures, submitted

We report calculations of the high harmonic generation spectra of the C\textsubscript{60} fullerene molecule, employing a diverse set of real-time time-dependent quantum chemical methods. All methodologies involve expanding the propagated electronic wavefunction in bases consisting of the ground and singly excited time-independent eigenstates obtained through the solution of the corresponding linear-response equations. We identify the correlation and exchange effect in the spectra by comparing the results from methods relying on the Hartree-Fock reference determinant with those obtained using approaches based on the density functional theory with different exchange-correlation functionals. The effect of the full random phase approximation treatment of the excited electronic states is also analyzed and compared with the configuration interaction singles and the Tamm-Dancoff approximation. We also showcase that the real-time extension of the semiempirical method INDO/S can be effectively applied for an approximate description of laser-driven dynamics in large systems., Comment: 50 pages, 9 figures

We report calculations of the high-order harmonic spectra of few-atomic clusters of two noble gases, helium and krypton, subjected to laser pulses of intensities above $10^{13}$ W/cm\textsuperscript{2}. We employ a fully \textit{ab intio} framework, namely the real-time time-dependent configuration interaction singles coupled to a discrete Gaussian basis set. Our model reproduces the observed higher than quadratic dependence between the high-order harmonic yield and the number of atoms, and the obtained value of the enhancement rate is in quantitative agreement with experimental results. We suggest a mechanism responsible for the high-order harmonic enhancement, according to which, after the tunneling ionization, the residual ion polarizes the electron densities of surrounding atoms in the cluster, which leads to increased electron-electron repulsion during the recollision. The proposed mechanism is not only fully consistent with both our calculations and the experimental data, but can also explain the limitations of previous theoretical studies on high-order harmonic generation in clusters., Comment: 15 pages, 7 figures

Molecular lattice clocks enable the search for new physics, such as fifth forces or temporal variations of fundamental constants, in a manner complementary to atomic clocks. Blackbody radiation (BBR) is a major contributor to the systematic error budget of conventional atomic clocks and is notoriously difficult to characterize and control. Here, we combine infrared Stark-shift spectroscopy in a molecular lattice clock and modern quantum chemistry methods to characterize the polarizabilities of the Sr$_2$ molecule from dc to infrared. Using this description, we determine the static and dynamic blackbody radiation shifts for all possible vibrational clock transitions to the $10^{-16}$ level. This constitutes an important step towards mHz-level molecular spectroscopy in Sr$_2$, and provides a framework for evaluating BBR shifts in other homonuclear molecules., Comment: 7 pages, 4 figures, added supplemental with 3 extra figures

We present the expansion to the expectation value coupled cluster theory (XCC) to the wavefunctions that include the inter electronic distances $r_{12}$ explicitly. We have extended our algebraic manipulation code \paldus to deal with the rems arising in the CC-F12 theory. We present the full working expressions for the one-electron density matrix (1RDM) and cumulant of the two-electron density matrix ($\lambda$-2RDM) in the framework of XCC-F12 theory. We discuss the possible approximations the expressions.

In this manuscript we report on the scintillation properties and pulse shape discrimination (PSD) performance of new organic glass scintillator. Two cylindrical samples with dimensions of 2x2 inches were tested. Additionally, this two samples were used in stack configuration in order to measure the PSD characteristics of a sample with a size of 2x4 inches. The study covers the measurements of neutron/gamma discrimination capability, emission spectra, photoelectron yield and analysis of the light pulse shapes originating from events related to gamma-rays and fast neutrons. The results were compared to data recorded previously using an EJ-276 plastic scintillator, an EJ-309 liquid scintillator and a stilbene single crystal.

We explore to what extent the relation between the absolute continuous spectrum and non-existence of subordinate generalized eigenvectors, known for scalar Jacobi operators, can be formulated also for block Jacobi operators with $d$-dimensional blocks. The main object here which allows us to make some progress in the above direction is the new notion of the barrier nonsubordinacy. We prove that the barrier nonsubordinacy implies the absolute continuity for block Jacobi operators, thus it can be treated as a partial generalization of the non-existence of subordinate solutions. We also present an example showing that the reverse implication in general does not hold. Finally, we extend to $d \geq 1$ some well-known $d=1$ conditions guaranteeing the absolute continuity and we give applications of our results to some concrete classes of block Jacobi matrices., Comment: 50 pages

We study finitely cyclic self-adjoint operators in a Hilbert space, i.e. self-adjoint operators that posses such a finite subset in the domain that the orbits of all its elements with respect to the operator are linearly dense in the space. One of the main goals here is to obtain the representation theorem for such operators in a form analogous to the one well-known in the cyclic self-adjoint operators case. To do this, we present here a detailed introduction to matrix measures, to the matrix measure $L^2$ spaces, and to the multiplication by scalar functions operators in such spaces. This allows us to formulate and prove in all the details the less known representation result, saying that the finitely cyclic self-adjoint operator is unitary equivalent to the multiplication by the identity function on $\mathbb{R}$ in the appropriate matrix measure $L^2$ space. Time-dependent quantum chemical methods coupled to Gaussian basis sets are gaining popularity in modeling the electron dynamics of atoms and molecules interacting with intense laser fields. Two approaches most widely used for this purpose, the real-time time-dependent configuration interaction singles and the real-time time-dependent density functional theory, both have their limitations, so the development of more accurate yet computationally efficient time-dependent methods is still in demand. In this work we explore the applicability of the real-time time-dependent configuration interaction singles and doubles (RT-TDCISD) in modeling strong field phenomena. Since the main drawback of RT-TDCISD is its unfavourable scaling, we develop several algorithms for reducing the effective propagation space by selecting these CISD eigenstates that should have dominant contribution to the time-evolution of the wavefunction. We test them by performing calculations of the high harmonic spectra of the H\textsubscript{2} molecule. We find out that the laser-driven electron dynamics is mostly realized in a very small subspace of eigenstates dominated by single excitations, that constitutes about one percent of the whole CISD eigenspectrum. Therefore, by properly selecting this subspace one can reduce the dimension of the propagation equation by two orders of magnitude without affecting the time-resolved observables., Comment: 24 pages in single column, 5 figures

Neutral quantum absorbers in optical lattices have emerged as a leading platform for achieving clocks with exquisite spectroscopic resolution. However, the studies of these clocks and their systematic shifts have so far been limited to atoms. Here, we extend this architecture to an ensemble of diatomic molecules and experimentally realize an accurate lattice clock based on pure molecular vibration. We evaluate the leading systematics, including the characterization of nonlinear trap-induced light shifts, achieving a total systematic uncertainty of $4.6\times10^{-14}$. The absolute frequency of the vibrational splitting is measured to be 31 825 183 207 592.8(5.1) Hz, enabling the dissociation energy of our molecule to be determined with record accuracy. Our results represent an important milestone in molecular spectroscopy and THz-frequency standards, and may be generalized to other neutral molecular species with applications for fundamental physics, including tests of molecular quantum electrodynamics and the search for new interactions., Comment: 17 pages, 8 figures

Photocurrent-voltage characteristic (PC-V) is a method of determining the critical parameter in X-ray and gamma-ray detector plates, i.e., the carrier mobility - lifetime product, mt. We show on the (Cd,Mn)Te samples that the measurement results depend strongly on the surface treatment and the charge space distribution. The PC-V characteristics obtained for hv > Eg and hv ~ Eg indicated that etching with 20% HCl caused an appearance of a significant concentration of very shallow surface traps at the (Cd,Mn)Te sample surface. These traps seriously changed the measurements of PC-V characteristics and PC kinetics. We also noticed a small contribution of holes to photoconductivity in the PC kinetics. In this paper, we investigate the effects of full electronic correlation on the high harmonic generation in the helium atom subjected to laser pulses of extremely high intensity. To do this, we perform real-time propagations of the helium atom wavefunction using quantum chemistry methods coupled to Gaussian basis sets. The calculations are done within the real-time time-dependent configuration interaction framework, at two levels of theory: time-dependent configuration interation with single excitations (TD-CIS, uncorrelated method) and time-dependent full configuration interaction (TD-FCI, fully correlated method), and analyse obtained HHG spectra. The electronic wavefunction is expanded in Dunning basis sets supplemented with functions adapted to describing highly excited continuum states. We also compare the TD-CI results with grid-based propagations of the helium atom within the single-active-electron approximation. Our results show when including the dynamical electron correlation, a noticeable improvement to the description of HHG can be achieved, in terms of e.g. a more constant intensity in the lower energy part of the harmonic plateau. However, such effects can be captured only if the basis set used suffices to reproduce the most basic features, such as the HHG cutoff position, at the uncorrelated level of theory., Comment: 14 pages, 2 figures

In this work we present a coupled cluster based approach to the computation of the spin orbit coupling matrix elements. The working expressions are derived from the quadratic response function with the coupled cluster parametrization, using the auxiliary excitation operator S. Systematic approximations are proposed with the CCSD and CC3 levels of theory. The new method is tested by computing lifetimes of several electronic states of Ca, Sr and Ba atoms, with Gaussian and Slater basis sets. We report efficient all-optical creation of an ultracold gas of alkaline-earth-metal dimers, $^{88}\rm{Sr}_2$, in their absolute ground state. Starting with weakly bound singlet molecules formed by narrow-line photoassociation in an optical lattice, followed by stimulated Raman adiabatic passage (STIRAP) via a singlet-dominant channel in the $(1)0_u^+$ excited potential, we prepare pure samples of more than 5500 molecules in $X^1\Sigma_g^+(v=0,J=0)$. We observe two-body collisional loss rates close to the universal limit for both the least bound and most bound vibrational states in $X^1\Sigma_g^+$. We demonstrate the enhancement of STIRAP efficiency in a magic-wavelength optical lattice where thermal decoherence is eliminated. Our results pave the way for the use of alkaline-earth-metal dimers for high-precision spectroscopy, and indicate favorable prospects for robust quantum state preparation of ultracold molecules involving closed-shell atoms, as well as molecule assembly in deep optical traps tuned to a magic wavelength.

Visualizing molecular transformations in real-time requires a structural retrieval method with {\AA}ngstr\"om spatial and femtosecond temporal atomic resolution. Imaging of hydrogen-containing molecules additionally requires an imaging method that is sensitive to the atomic positions of hydrogen nuclei, with most methods possessing relatively low sensitivity to hydrogen scattering. Laser-induced electron diffraction (LIED) is a table top technique that can image ultrafast structural changes of gas-phase polyatomic molecules with sub-{\AA}ngstr\"om and femtosecond spatiotemporal resolution together with relatively high sensitivity to hydrogen scattering. Here, we image the umbrella motion of an isolated ammonia molecule (NH$_3$) following its strong field ionization. Upon ionization of a neutral ammonia molecule, the ammonia cation (NH$_3^+$) undergoes an ultrafast geometrical transformation from a pyramidal ($\Phi_{HNH} = 107 ^\circ$) to planar ($\Phi_{HNH}=120^\circ$) structure in approximately 8 femtoseconds. Using LIED, we retrieve a near-planar ($\Phi_{HNH}=117 \pm 5^\circ$) field-dressed NH$_3^+$ molecular structure $7.8-9.8$ femtoseconds after ionization. Our measured field-dressed NH$_3^+$ structure is in excellent agreement with our calculated equilibrium field dressed structure using quantum chemical ab initio calculations.

This paper presents the results of the fast neutron irradiation (E$_n$ > 0.5MeV) of an EJ-276 scintillator performed in the MARIA research reactor with fluence up to 5.3$\times$10$^{15}$ particles/cm$^2$. In our work, four samples with size $\phi$25.4~mm$\times$5~mm were tested. The changes in the light yield, emission and absorption spectrum and neutron/gamma discrimination using PuBe source before and after irradiation are presented. The figure of merit in neutron/gamma discrimination based on the charge integration method for different neutron fluences and different short gate integration times are determined., Comment: 13 pages, 15 figures

A precise understanding of mechanisms governing the dynamics of electrons in atoms and molecules subjected to intense laser fields has a key importance for the description of attosecond processes such as the high-harmonic generation and ionization. From the theoretical point of view, this is still a challenging task, as new approaches to solve the time-dependent Schr\"odinger equation with both good accuracy and efficiency are still emerging. Until recently, the purely numerical methods of real-time propagation of the wavefunction using finite grids have been frequently and successfully used to capture the electron dynamics in small one- or two-electron systems. However, as the main focus of attoscience shifts toward many-electron systems, such techniques are no longer effective and need to be replaced by more approximate but computationally efficient ones. In this paper, we explore the increasingly popular method of expanding the wavefunction of the examined system into a linear combination of atomic orbitals and present a novel systematic scheme for constructing an optimal Gaussian basis set suitable for the description of excited and continuum atomic or molecular states. We analyze the performance of the proposed basis sets by carrying out a series of time-dependent configuration interaction calculations for the hydrogen atom in fields of intensity varying from $5 \times 10^{13}\:\rm W/cm^2$ to $5 \times 10^{14}\:\rm W/cm^2$. We report state-of-the-art ab initio calculations of the potential energy curve for the $a^3\Sigma_u^+$ state of the lithium dimer conducted to achieve spectroscopic accuracy ($<$1cm$^{-1}$) without any prior adjustment to fit the corresponding experimental data. The nonrelativistic clamped-nuclei component of the interaction energy is calculated with a composite method involving six-electron coupled cluster and full configuration interaction theories combined with basis sets of Slater-type orbitals ranging in quality from double- to sextuple-zeta. To go beyond the nonrelativistic Born-Oppenheimer picture we include both the leading-order relativistic and adiabatic corrections, and find both of these effects to be non-negligible within the present accuracy standards. The potential energy curve developed by us allowed to calculate molecular parameters ($D_e$, $D_0$, $\omega_e$ etc.) for this system, as well as the corresponding vibrational energy levels, with an error of only a few tenths of a wavenumber ($0.2-0.4\,$cm$^{-1}$). We also report an ab initio value for the scattering length of two $^2S$ lithium atoms which determines the stability of the related Bose-Einstein condensate.

Optical trapping of molecules with long coherence times is crucial for many protocols in quantum information and metrology. However, the factors that limit the lifetimes of the trapped molecules remain elusive and require improved understanding of the underlying molecular structure. Here we show that measurements of vibronic line strengths in weakly and deeply bound $^{88}$Sr$_2$ molecules, combined with \textit{ab initio} calculations, allow for unambiguous identification of vibrational quantum numbers. This, in turn, enables the construction of refined excited potential energy curves that inform the selection of magic wavelengths which facilitate long vibrational coherence. We demonstrate Rabi oscillations between far-separated vibrational states that persist for nearly 100 ms.

This paper presents the results of the proton irradiation of silicon photomulipliers (SiPMs) by mono-energetic 170 MeV protons with fluence up to 4.6$\times$10$^{9}$ particles/cm$^2$. In our work, three types of silicon photodetectors from Hamamatsu with areas 3$\times$3 mm$^2$ and different subpixel sizes of 25$\times$25 $\mu$m$^2$, 50$\times$50 $\mu$m$^2$, and 75$\times$75 $\mu$m$^2$ were used. The changes in the SiPM dark count rate (DCR) spectrum before and after irradiation in temperatures in the range of 20 $^\circ$C to -65 $^\circ$C are presented. The influence of the DCR changes on the energy resolution of the 662 keV gamma line from the $^{137}$Cs for a non-irradiated GAGG:Ce (1$\%$) scintillator is investigated. The time period of usability of the SiPM detector irradiated by protons in cosmic space was estimated.

In this work we present a new method of approximating the continuum wavefunctions with a discrete basis set. This method aims to be at least compatible with other well known methods of the electronic structure theory to describe processes in the electronic continuum. As an example of the application we present the results of the calculations of the photoionization cross sections for the hydrogen atom and hydrogen molecule and for the helium atom. We also obtained the photoelectron angular distribution for the hydrogen molecule. The agreement of our results with the experimental data is very good in the energy range from the ionization threshold up to photon energies of about 60 eV.

Observing changes in molecular structure requires atomic-scale {\AA}ngstrom and femtosecond spatio-temporal resolution. We use the Fourier transform (FT) variant of laser-induced electron diffraction (LIED), FT-LIED, to directly retrieve the molecular structure of ${\rm H_2O^+}$ with picometre and femtosecond resolution without a priori knowledge of the molecular structure nor the use of retrieval algorithms or ab initio calculations. We identify a symmetrically stretched ${\rm H_2O^+}$ field-dressed structure that is most likely in the ground electronic state. We subsequently study the nuclear response of an isolated water molecule to an external laser field at four different field strengths. We show that upon increasing the laser field strength from 2.5 to 3.8 V/{\AA}, the O-H bond is further stretched and the molecule slightly bends. The observed ultrafast structural changes lead to an increase in the dipole moment of water and, in turn, a stronger dipole interaction between the nuclear framework of the molecule and the intense laser field. Our results provide important insights into the coupling of the nuclear framework to a laser field as the molecular geometry of ${\rm H_2O^+}$ is altered in the presence of an external field.

Atomic lattice clocks have spurred numerous ideas for tests of fundamental physics, detection of general relativistic effects, and studies of interacting many-body systems. On the other hand, molecular structure and dynamics offer rich energy scales that are at the heart of new protocols in precision measurement and quantum information science. Here we demonstrate a fundamentally distinct type of lattice clock that is based on vibrations in diatomic molecules, and present coherent Rabi oscillations between weakly and deeply bound molecules that persist for 10's of milliseconds. This control is made possible by a state-insensitive magic lattice trap that weakly couples to molecular vibronic resonances and enhances the coherence time between molecules and light by several orders of magnitude. The achieved quality factor $Q=8\times10^{11}$ results from 30-Hz narrow resonances for a 25-THz clock transition in Sr$_2$. Our technique of extended coherent manipulation is applicable to long-term storage of quantum information in qubits based on ultracold polar molecules, while the vibrational clock enables precise probes of interatomic forces, tests of Newtonian gravitation at ultrashort range, and model-independent searches for electron-to-proton mass ratio variations.

This paper has been prepared by the Symphony collaboration (University of Warsaw, Uniwersytet Jagiello\'nski, DESY/CNR and ICFO) on the occasion of the 25th anniversary of the "simple man's models" which underlie most of the phenomena that occur when intense ultrashort laser pulses interact with matter. The phenomena in question include High-Harmonic Generation, Above-Threshold Ionization, and Non-Sequential Multielectron Ionization. "Simple man's models" provide, both an intuitive basis for understanding the numerical solutions of the time-dependent Schr\"odinger equation, and the motivation for the powerful analytic approximations generally known as the Strong Field Approximation (SFA). In this paper we first review the SFA in the form developed by us in the last 25 years. In this approach SFA is a method to solve the TDSE using a systematic perturbation theory in a part of the Hamiltonian describing continuum-continuum transitions in the presence of the laser field. In this review we focus on recent applications of SFA to HHG, ATI and NSMI from multi-electron atoms and from multi-atom. The main novel part of the presented theory concerns generalizations of SFA to: (i) time-dependent treatment of two-electron atoms, allowing for studies of an interplay between Electron Impact Ionization (EII) and Resonant Excitation with Subsequent Ionization (RESI); (ii) time-dependent treatment in the single active electron (SAE) approximation of "large" molecules and targets which are themselves undergoing dynamics during the HHG or ATI process. In particular, we formulate the general expressions for the case of arbitrary molecules, combining input from quantum chemistry and quantum dynamics. We formulate also theory of time-dependent separable molecular potentials to model analytically the dynamics of realistic electronic wave packets for molecules in strong laser fields., Comment: We dedicate this work to the memory of Bertrand Carr\'e, who passed away in March 2018 at the age of 60. This work concerns \emph{ab initio} calculations of the complete potential energy curve and spectroscopic constants for the ground state $X^1\Sigma_g^+$ of the beryllium dimer, Be$_2$. High accuracy and reliability of the results is one of the primary goals of the paper. To this end we apply large basis sets of Slater-type orbitals combined with high-level electronic structure methods including triple and quadruple excitations. The effects of the relativity are also fully accounted for in the theoretical description. For the first time the leading-order quantum electrodynamics effects are fully incorporated for a many-electron molecule. Influence of the finite nuclear mass corrections (post-Born-Oppenheimer effects) turns out to be completely negligible for this system. The predicted well-depth ($D_e=934.5\pm2.5\,\mbox{cm}^{-1}$) and the dissociation energy ($D_0=808.0\,\mbox{cm}^{-1}$) are in a very good agreement with the most recent experimental data. We confirm the existence of the weakly bound twelfth vibrational level [Patkowski et al., Science 326, 1382 (2009)] and predict that it lies just about 0.5 $\mbox{cm}^{-1}$ below the onset of the continuum.

At ultralow energies, atoms and molecules undergo collisions and reactions that are best described in terms of quantum mechanical wave functions. In contrast, at higher energies these processes can be understood quasiclassically. Here, we investigate the crossover from the quantum mechanical to the quasiclassical regime both experimentally and theoretically for photodissociation of ultracold diatomic strontium molecules. This basic reaction is carried out with a full control of quantum states for the molecules and their photofragments. The photofragment angular distributions are imaged, and calculated using a quantum mechanical model as well as the WKB and a semiclassical approximation that are explicitly compared across a range of photofragment energies. The reaction process is shown to converge to its high-energy (axial recoil) limit when the energy exceeds the height of any reaction barriers. This phenomenon is quantitatively investigated for two-channel photodissociation using intuitive parameters for the channel amplitude and phase. While the axial recoil limit is generally found to be well described by a commonly used quasiclassical model, we find that when the photofragments are identical particles, their bosonic or fermionic quantum statistics can cause this model to fail, requiring a quantum mechanical treatment even at high energies., Comment: 13 pages, 6 figures

Processes that break molecular bonds are typically observed with molecules occupying a mixture of quantum states and successfully described with quasiclassical models, while a few studies have explored the distinctly quantum mechanical low-energy regime. Here we use photodissociation of diatomic strontium molecules to demonstrate the crossover from the ultracold, quantum regime where the photofragment angular distributions strongly depend on the kinetic energy, to the energy-independent quasiclassical regime. Using time-of-flight velocity map imaging for photodissociation channels with millikelvin reaction barriers, we explore photofragment energies in the 0.1-300 mK range experimentally and up to 3 K theoretically, and discuss the energy scale at which the crossover occurs. Structural information on electronically excited neutral molecules can be indirectly retrieved, largely through pump-probe and rotational spectroscopy measurements with the aid of calculations. Here, we demonstrate the direct structural retrieval of neutral carbonyl disulfide (CS$_2$) in the B$^1$B$_2$ excited electronic state using laser-induced electron diffraction (LIED). We unambiguously identify the ultrafast symmetric stretching and bending of the field-dressed neutral CS$_2$ molecule with combined picometer and attosecond resolution using intrapulse pump-probe excitation and measurement. We invoke the Renner-Teller effect to populate the B$^1$B$_2$ excited state in neutral CS$_2$, leading to bending and stretching of the molecule. Our results demonstrate the sensitivity of LIED in retrieving the geometric structure of CS$_2$, which is known to appear as a two-center scatterer.

In this paper we consider the evaluation of the Araki-Sucher correction for arbitrary many-electron atomic and molecular systems. This contribution appears in the leading order quantum electrodynamics corrections to the energy of a bound state. The conventional one-electron basis set of Gaussian-type orbitals (GTOs) is adopted; this leads to two-electron matrix elements which are evaluated with help of generalised the McMurchie-Davidson scheme. We also consider the convergence of the results towards the complete basis set. A rigorous analytic result for the convergence rate is obtained and verified by comparing with independent numerical values for the helium atom. Finally, we present a selection of numerical examples and compare our results with the available reference data for small systems. In contrast with other methods used for the evaluation of the Araki-Sucher correction, our method is not restricted to few-electron atoms or molecules. Photodissociation of a molecule produces a spatial distribution of photofragments determined by the molecular structure and the characteristics of the dissociating light. Performing this basic chemical reaction at ultracold temperatures allows its quantum mechanical features to dominate. In this regime, weak applied fields can be used to control the reaction. Here, we photodissociate ultracold diatomic strontium in magnetic fields below 10 G and observe striking changes in photofragment angular distributions. The observations are in excellent qualitative agreement with a multichannel quantum chemistry model that includes nonadiabatic effects and predicts strong mixing of partial waves in the photofragment energy continuum. We present a general methodology to evaluate matrix elements of the effective core potentials (ECPs) within one-electron basis set of Slater-type orbitals (STOs). The scheme is based on translation of individual STO distributions in the framework of Barnett-Coulson method. We discuss different types of integrals which naturally appear and reduce them to few basic quantities which can be calculated recursively or purely numerically. Additionally, we consider evaluation of the STOs matrix elements involving the core polarisation potentials (CPP) and effective spin-orbit potentials. Construction of the STOs basis sets designed specifically for use with ECPs is discussed and differences in comparison with all-electron basis sets are briefly summarised. We verify the validity of the present approach by calculating excitation energies, static dipole polarisabilities and valence orbital energies for the alkaline earth metals (Ca, Sr, Ba). Finally, we evaluate interaction energies, permanent dipole moments and ionisation energies for barium and strontium hydrides, and compare them with the best available experimental and theoretical data., Comment: submitted to Phys.
