35. The role of novel tiered reporting system in serous fluid cytology and risk of malignancy assessment: A retrospective study in a tertiary care center

Abstract

Background: Serous effusion cytology (SEC) reporting is important for the management of the cancer patient. The International System for Reporting Serous Fluid Cytology (ISRSFC) provides tiered reporting terminology to standardize practice, looking into the risk of malignancy (MAL) for each category. In this study, we have assessed the utility of the ISRSFC and reported our experience at a tertiary cancer center. Materials and Methods: Serous fluid cytology reported from January 2019 to December 2020 was categorized according to ISRSFC diagnostic categories: nondiagnostic (ND), negative for MAL (NFM), atypia of undetermined significance (AUS), suspicious for MAL (SFM), and MAL. The risk of MAL (ROM) and performance parameters were calculated. Results: A total of 2150 serous effusions including 1160 pleural, 929 peritoneal, and 61 pericardial effusions from 2071 patients were reported. There were 742 males and 1329 females. The patient's age ranged from less than 1 yr to 95 years. The volume of the sample ranged from 0.5 ml to 2000 ml. There were 114 ND (5.32%), 1068 NFM (49.67%), 144 AUS (6.69%), 82 SFM (3.81%), and 742 MAL (34.51%) cases. Adenocarcinoma was the most common MAL involving serous fluids (91.50%). The calculated ROM was 15.38% for ND, 24.26% for NFM, 62.96% for AUS, 79.16% for SFM, and 100% for MAL. Sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value, negative predictive value, and diagnostic accuracy were, respectively, 68.04%, 96.96%, 96.35%, 72.07%, and 81.33%. Conclusion: ISRSFC provides consistent reporting terminology and the ROM for each category aids in clinical correlation and management.

Abstract

Bismuth substituted lutetium iron garnet (BLIG) films exhibit larger Faraday rotation, and have a higher Curie temperature than yttrium iron garnet. We have observed magnetic stripe domains and measured domain widths of 1.4 {\mu}{\mu}m using Fourier domain polarization microscopy, Faraday rotation experiments yield a coercive field of 5 Oe. These characterizations form the basis of micromagnetic simulations that allow us to estimate and compare spin wave excitations in BLIG films. We observed that these films support thermal magnons with a precessional frequency of 7 GHz with a line width of 400 MHz. Further, we studied the dependence of precessional frequency on the externally applied magnetic field. Abstract

Diabetes is a fast-developing medical issue that causes most renal and cardiac illnesses. Thus, diabetes management requires regular glucose monitoring. One potential technology is non-invasive glucometer monitoring. This work aims to develop a user-friendly near-infrared sensor-based non-invasive glucose monitoring system, correlating sensor output voltage variations with glucose levels, to provide accurate and convenient glucose monitoring for diabetes management. The objective is to validate the system's accuracy against existing fingerpick methods and analyze its performance across different age groups and food intake conditions through experimental testing and Clarke grid analysis. In our research, we propose a near-infrared sensor-based non-invasive-type glucose monitoring technique which is a user-friendly system. The experimental setup and prototype system are designed and implemented for measuring the variation of glucose level with respect to a sensor output voltage. Using Beer Lambert's law, the established results correlated the absorbance property of light with the sample concentration level. Demonstration of testing for different aged people was done under various food intake conditions. The obtained results are tabulated and validated with the existing fingerpick method and achieved an accuracy of 97.8%. Also, Clarke grid analysis has been done and depicted the pattern obtained. 42. Ni-P SiC composite coatings on piston rings by plate and bumper technique and its tribological properties.

Abstract

Breakdown of piston rings in the automotive sector due to wear, corrosion and high temperatures is common. Conventional hard chrome and chrome ceramic coatings with hexavalent chromium possess environmental risks due to its carcinogenic effects. Nickel-phosphorus (Ni-P) plating is not hazardous and hence silicon carbide (SiC) uniformly distributed in Ni-P coating by plate and bumper method is made as an eco-friendly and cost-effective approach. This Ni-P SiC composite coating provides high hardness, wear resistance, corrosion resistance and improved friction resistance due to the uniform distribution of the SiC composite particles. The amorphous Ni-P coating is converted to nickel phosphide intermetallic crystalline form during the heat treatment at 300 °C and is confirmed by XRD. The heat treatment also increases the microhardness in the rage of 810 to 1015 HV for Ni-P SiC composite coating.
