For millennia, humans have gravitated towards coastlines for their resource potential and as geopolitical centres for global trade. A basic requirement ensuring water security for coastal communities relies on a delicate balance between the supply and demand of potable water. The interaction between freshwater and saltwater in coastal settings is, therefore, complicated by both natural and human-driven environmental changes at the land-sea interface. In particular, ongoing sea level rise, warming and deoxygenation might exacerbate such perturbations. In this context, an improved understanding of the nature and variability of groundwater fluxes across the land-sea continuum is timely, yet remains out of reach. The flow of terrestrial groundwater across the coastal transition zone as well as the extent of freshened groundwater below the present-day seafloor are receiving increased attention in marine and coastal sciences because they likely represent a significant, yet highly uncertain component of (bio)geochemical budgets, and because of the emerging interest in the potential use of offshore freshened groundwater as a resource. At the same time, “reverse” groundwater flux from offshore to onshore is of prevalent socio-economic interest as terrestrial groundwater resources are continuously pressured by overpumping and seawater intrusion in many coastal regions worldwide. An accurate assessment of the land-ocean connectivity through groundwater and its potential responses to future anthropogenic activities and climate change will require a multidisciplinary approach combining the expertise of geophysicists, hydrogeologists, (bio)geochemists and modellers. Such joint activities will lay the scientific basis for better understanding the role of groundwater in societal-relevant issues such as climate change, pollution and the environmental status of the coastal oceans within the framework of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. Excess nutrient supply by the rivers and the atmosphere are considered as the major causes for the persistently poor ecological status of the Baltic Sea. More than 97% of the Baltic Sea still suffers from eutrophication due to past and present inputs of nitrogen and phosphorus. One of the poorly quantified nutrient sources in the Baltic Sea is submarine groundwater discharge (SGD). Through seepage meter deployments and a radium mass balance model, a widespread occurrence of SGD along the coastline of Eckernförde Bay was detected. Mean SGD was 21.6 cm d −1 with a calculated freshwater fraction of 17%. Where SGD was detected, pore water sampled by a piezometer revealed a wide range of dissolved inorganic nitrogen (DIN: 0.05–1.722 µmol L −1 ) and phosphate (PO 4 3− : 0.03–70.5 µmol L −1 ) concentrations. Mean DIN and PO 4 3− concentrations in non-saline (salinity < 1) pore waters were 59 ± 68 µmol L −1 and 1.2 ± 1.9 µmol L −1 , respectively; whereas pore water with salinities > 1 revealed higher values, 113 ± 207 µmol L −1 and 6 ± 12 µmol L −1 for DIN and PO 4 3− , respectively. The nutrient concentrations along the salinity gradient do not suggest that land-derived groundwater is the definitive source of nutrients in the Baltic Sea. Still, SGD may contribute to a major autochthonous nutrient source, resulting from remineralization or dissolution processes of organic matter in the sediments. The DIN and PO 4 3− fluxes derived from SGD rates through seepage meters are 7.9 ± 9.2 mmol m −2 d −1 and 0.5 ± 0.4 mmol m −2 d −1 , lower by a factor of ~ 2 and ~ 5 when compared to the fluxes derived with the radium mass balance model (mean DIN: 19 ± 28 mmol m −2 d −1 ; mean PO 4 3− : 1.5 ± 2.7 mmol m −2 d −1 ). Assuming that these mean radium-based nutrient fluxes are representative for the coastline of Eckernförde Bay, we arrive at SGD-borne nutrient fluxes of about 1 t km −1 y −1 of nitrogen and 0.2 t km −1 y −1 of phosphorous. Enhanced weathering of mafic and ultra-mafic minerals has been suggested as a strategy for carbon dioxide removal (CDR) and a contribution to achieve a balance between global CO2 sources and sinks (net zero emission). This study was designed to assess CDR by dissolution of ultramafic sand (UMS) in artificial seawater (ASW). Fine grained UMS with an olivine content of ~75% was reacted in ASW for up to 134 days at 1 bar and 21.5–23.9°C. A decline in total alkalinity (TA) was observed over the course of the experiments. This unexpected result indicates that TA removal via precipitation of cation-rich authigenic phases exceeded the production of TA induced by olivine dissolution. The TA decline was accompanied by a decrease in dissolved inorganic carbon and Ca concentrations presumably induced by CaCO3 precipitation. Temporal changes in dissolved Si, Ca, Mg, and TA concentrations observed during the experiments were evaluated by a numerical model to identify secondary mineral phases and quantify rates of authigenic phase formation. The modeling indicates that CaCO3, FeOOH and a range of Mg-Si-phases were precipitated during the experiments. Chemical analysis of precipitates and reacted UMS surfaces confirmed that these authigenic phases accumulated in the batch reactors. Nickel released during olivine dissolution, a potential toxic element for certain organisms, was incorporated in the secondary phases and is thus not a suitable proxy for dissolution rates as proposed by earlier studies. The overall reaction stoichiometry derived from lab experiments was applied in a box model simulating atmospheric CO2 uptake in a continental shelf setting induced by olivine addition. The model results indicate that CO2 uptake is reduced by a factor of 5 due to secondary mineral formation and the buffering capacity of seawater. We present pore-fluid geochemistry and heat-flow data along the SWIM1 fault in the Horseshoe Abyssal Plain (northeastern Atlantic Ocean). The SWIM1 fault is part of the transcurrent plate boundary between Africa and Eurasia and cuts through as much as 5-km-thick sediments overlying >140 Ma oceanic lithosphere. In a number of places, restraining segments (as long as 15 km) of the SWIM1 fault generate anticlines (positive flower structures) that protrude as ~100-m-high hills above the abyssal plain. Heat flow and gradients of dissolved constituents in pore water are enhanced at these seafloor highs. Transport-reaction modeling confirms that slow advection of deep-seated fluids, depleted in Mg and enriched in Sr and CH4, can explain the observations. The geochemical signature is similar to the one observed at deep-sea mud volcanoes located eastward on the SWIM1 fault. The upward-migrating fluids have interacted with carbonate rocks at maximum 5 km depth, which represent the oldest sedimentary unit on top of the basement. We argue that deep-rooted fluids can generally be mobilized and transported upward along flower structures that formed in restraining-bend segments of long strike-slip faults. Such tectonic settings represent largely unrecognized corridors for mass exchange between lithosphere and ocean.

Reviews of Geophysics, 59(1), (2021): e2020RG000706, https://doi.org/10.1029/2020RG000706., First reported in the 1960s, offshore freshened groundwater (OFG) has now been documented in most continental margins around the world. In this review we compile a database documenting OFG occurrences and analyze it to establish the general characteristics and controlling factors. We also assess methods used to map and characterize OFG, identify major knowledge gaps, and propose strategies to address them. OFG has a global volume of 1 × 106 km3; it predominantly occurs within 55 km of the coast and down to a water depth of 100 m. OFG is mainly hosted within siliciclastic aquifers on passive margins and recharged by meteoric water during Pleistocene sea level lowstands. Key factors influencing OFG distribution are topography-driven flow, salinization via haline convection, permeability contrasts, and the continuity/connectivity of permeable and confining strata. Geochemical and stable isotope measurements of pore waters from boreholes have provided insights into OFG emplacement mechanisms, while recent advances in seismic reflection profiling, electromagnetic surveying, and numerical models have improved our understanding of OFG geometry and controls. Key knowledge gaps, such as the extent and function of OFG, and the timing of their emplacement, can be addressed by the application of isotopic age tracers, joint inversion of electromagnetic and seismic reflection data, and development of three-dimensional hydrological models. An extensive data set of biogenic silica (BSi) fluxes is presented for the Peruvian oxygen minimum zone (OMZ) at 11ºS and 12ºS. Each transect extends from the shelf to the upper slope (∼1000 m) and dissects the permanently anoxic waters between ∼200 – 500m water depth. BSi burial (2100 mmol m‐2 yr‐1) and recycling fluxes (3300 mmol m‐2 yr‐1) were highest on the shelf with mean preservation efficiencies (34±15%) that exceed the global mean of 10 – 20%. BSi preservation was highest on the inner shelf (up to 56%), decreasing to 7% and 12% under anoxic waters and below the OMZ, respectively. The data suggest that the main control on BSi preservation is the rate at which reactive BSi is transported away from undersaturated surface sediments by burial and bioturbation to the underlying saturated sediment layers where BSi dissolution is thermodynamically and/or kinetically inhibited. BSi burial across the entire Peruvian margin between 3ºS to 15ºS and down to 1000m water depth is estimated to be 0.1 – 0.2 Tmol yr‐1; equivalent to 2 – 7% of total burial on continental margins. Existing global data permit a simple relationship between BSi rain rate to the seafloor and the accumulation of unaltered BSi, giving the possibility to reconstruct rain rates and primary production from the sediment archive in addition to benthic Si turnover in global models.

Abstract: At the place where the submarine Aden Ridge encroaches on the African continent and interacts with the East African Rift system, two small basins form: Ghoubbet-al-Kharab and Lake Asal. Whereas Ghoubbet-al-Kharab is connected to the open ocean, Lake Asal is a typical example of oceanic “embryo”, which is defined as a system that is detached from the ocean, but has features of a marine basin with an oceanic type crust and a seawater-based water body. In order to shed light on the source of water, type of hydrothermal activity and hydrothermal deposits, and controls on the water chemistry in an oceanic “embryo”, we undertook a mineralogical-geochemical study of the lake water, hydrothermal fluids and hydrothermal carbonate deposits of Lake Asal. The geochemical analyses of lake water and hydrothermal fluids show that Lake Asal (located in an arid zone with strong evaporation and with no riverine input) is fed by seafloor-type hydrothermal fluids according to the following scenario: percolation of seawater along faults and cracks of extension in the rift, reaction of seawater with the hot basaltic rocks and hydrothermal fluid generation, discharge of the hydrothermal fluid in the Asal depression and accumulation of the Lake Asal water body. The fluid venting at the Lake Asal bottom is a mixture of 97% end-member hydrothermal fluid and 3% lake water. The calculated end-member hydrothermal fluid of this oceanic “embryo” is poorer in metals than the seafloor hydrothermal fluids of an open and evolved ocean. Abstract We present noble gas concentrations determined in pore water of deep-sea sediments close to a recently discovered hydrothermal vent site, consisting of a mound structure and several black smokers, located in the northern Guaymas Basin, Gulf of California. Noble gases were used as tracers to identify the origin of fluids within the sediment pore space and to gain insight into transport dynamics of hydrothermal fluids in this region. Our data suggest that Guaymas Basin bottom water is the only source of pore water in the pelagic sediment body close to the hydrothermal vent field. In particular, there is no evidence of any direct (diffusive or advective) transport of hydrothermal fluids through the deep-sea sediments surrounding the black smoker system. This finding implies that at this black smoker site hydrothermal fluids are transported upwards from the fluid source in very narrow pathways below the smokers. Thus, the fluids are only injected into the ocean directly through the chimneys of the black smokers and no additional emission from the surrounding sediment takes place. Helium isotope data show that during a more active phase of the vent field in the past (supposedly representing the early onset of the black smokers 5–6 kyrs ago), bottom water with a different isotopic signature was incorporated into the sediment column.
