With the rapid expansion of large language model (LLM) applications, there is an emerging shift in the role of LLM-based AI chatbots from serving merely as general inquiry tools to acting as professional service agents. However, current studies often overlook a critical aspect of professional service agents: the act of communicating in a manner consistent with their professional identities. This is of particular importance in the healthcare sector, where effective communication with patients is essential for achieving professional goals, such as promoting patient well-being by encouraging healthy behaviors. To bridge this gap, we propose LAPI (LLM-based Agent with a Professional Identity), a novel framework for designing professional service agent tailored for medical question-and-answer (Q\&A) services, ensuring alignment with a specific professional identity. Our method includes a theory-guided task planning process that decomposes complex professional tasks into manageable subtasks aligned with professional objectives and a pragmatic entropy method designed to generate professional and ethical responses with low uncertainty. Experiments on various LLMs show that the proposed approach outperforms baseline methods, including few-shot prompting, chain-of-thought prompting, across key metrics such as fluency, naturalness, empathy, patient-centricity, and ROUGE-L scores. Additionally, the ablation study underscores the contribution of each component to the overall effectiveness of the approach.

This technical report presents Prithvi-EO-2.0, a new geospatial foundation model that offers significant improvements over its predecessor, Prithvi-EO-1.0. Trained on 4.2M global time series samples from NASA's Harmonized Landsat and Sentinel-2 data archive at 30m resolution, the new 300M and 600M parameter models incorporate temporal and location embeddings for enhanced performance across various geospatial tasks. Through extensive benchmarking with GEO-Bench, the 600M version outperforms the previous Prithvi-EO model by 8\% across a range of tasks. It also outperforms six other geospatial foundation models when benchmarked on remote sensing tasks from different domains and resolutions (i.e. from 0.1m to 15m). The results demonstrate the versatility of the model in both classical earth observation and high-resolution applications. Early involvement of end-users and subject matter experts (SMEs) are among the key factors that contributed to the project's success. In particular, SME involvement allowed for constant feedback on model and dataset design, as well as successful customization for diverse SME-led applications in disaster response, land use and crop mapping, and ecosystem dynamics monitoring. Prithvi-EO-2.0 is available on Hugging Face and IBM terratorch, with additional resources on GitHub. The project exemplifies the Trusted Open Science approach embraced by all involved organizations.

This study introduces a novel approach to terrain feature classification by incorporating spatial point pattern statistics into deep learning models. Inspired by the concept of location encoding, which aims to capture location characteristics to enhance GeoAI decision-making capabilities, we improve the GeoAI model by a knowledge driven approach to integrate both first-order and second-order effects of point patterns. This paper investigates how these spatial contexts impact the accuracy of terrain feature predictions. Retrieval and recommendation are two essential tasks in modern search tools. This paper introduces a novel retrieval-reranking framework leveraging Large Language Models (LLMs) to enhance the spatiotemporal and semantic associated mining and recommendation of relevant unusual climate and environmental events described in news articles and web posts. This framework uses advanced natural language processing techniques to address the limitations of traditional manual curation methods in terms of high labor cost and lack of scalability. Specifically, we explore an optimized solution to employ cutting-edge embedding models for semantically analyzing spatiotemporal events (news) and propose a Geo-Time Re-ranking (GT-R) strategy that integrates multi-faceted criteria including spatial proximity, temporal association, semantic similarity, and category-instructed similarity to rank and identify similar spatiotemporal events. We apply the proposed framework to a dataset of four thousand Local Environmental Observer (LEO) Network events, achieving top performance in recommending similar events among multiple cutting-edge dense retrieval models. The search and recommendation pipeline can be applied to a wide range of similar data search tasks dealing with geospatial and temporal data. We hope that by linking relevant events, we can better aid the general public to gain an enhanced understanding of climate change and its impact on different communities.

In the past few years, Artificial Intelligence (AI)-based weather forecasting methods have widely demonstrated strong competitiveness among the weather forecasting systems. However, these methods are insufficient for high-spatial-resolution short-term nowcasting within 6 hours, which is crucial for warning short-duration, mesoscale and small-scale weather events. Geostationary satellite remote sensing provides detailed, high spatio-temporal and all-day observations, which can address the above limitations of existing methods. Therefore, this paper proposed an advanced data-driven thermal infrared cloud images forecasting model, "DaYu." Unlike existing data-driven weather forecasting models, DaYu is specifically designed for geostationary satellite observations, with a temporal resolution of 0.5 hours and a spatial resolution of ${0.05}^\circ$ $\times$ ${0.05}^\circ$. DaYu is based on a large-scale transformer architecture, which enables it to capture fine-grained cloud structures and learn fast-changing spatio-temporal evolution features effectively. Moreover, its attention mechanism design achieves a balance in computational complexity, making it practical for applications. DaYu not only achieves accurate forecasts up to 3 hours with a correlation coefficient higher than 0.9, 6 hours higher than 0.8, and 12 hours higher than 0.7, but also detects short-duration, mesoscale, and small-scale weather events with enhanced detail, effectively addressing the shortcomings of existing methods in providing detailed short-term nowcasting within 6 hours. Furthermore, DaYu has significant potential in short-term climate disaster prevention and mitigation.

Geospatial Knowledge Graphs (GeoKGs) model geoentities (e.g., places and natural features) and spatial relationships in an interconnected manner, providing strong knowledge support for geographic applications, including data retrieval, question-answering, and spatial reasoning. However, existing methods for mining and reasoning from GeoKGs, such as popular knowledge graph embedding (KGE) techniques, lack geographic awareness. This study aims to enhance general-purpose KGE by developing new strategies and integrating geometric features of spatial relations, including topology, direction, and distance, to infuse the embedding process with geographic intuition. The new model is tested on downstream link prediction tasks, and the results show that the inclusion of geometric features, particularly topology and direction, improves prediction accuracy for both geoentities and spatial relations. KnowWhereGraph is one of the largest fully publicly available geospatial knowledge graphs. It includes data from 30 layers on natural hazards (e.g., hurricanes, wildfires), climate variables (e.g., air temperature, precipitation), soil properties, crop and land-cover types, demographics, and human health, various place and region identifiers, among other themes. These have been leveraged through the graph by a variety of applications to address challenges in food security and agricultural supply chains; sustainability related to soil conservation practices and farm labor; and delivery of emergency humanitarian aid following a disaster. In this paper, we introduce the ontology that acts as the schema for KnowWhereGraph. This broad overview provides insight into the requirements and design specifications for the graph and its schema, including the development methodology (modular ontology modeling) and the resources utilized to implement, materialize, and deploy KnowWhereGraph with its end-user interfaces and public query SPARQL endpoint.

Research on geospatial foundation models (GFMs) has become a trending topic in geospatial artificial intelligence (AI) research due to their potential for achieving high generalizability and domain adaptability, reducing model training costs for individual researchers. Unlike large language models, such as ChatGPT, constructing visual foundation models for image analysis, particularly in remote sensing, encountered significant challenges such as formulating diverse vision tasks into a general problem framework. This paper evaluates the recently released NASA-IBM GFM Prithvi for its predictive performance on high-level image analysis tasks across multiple benchmark datasets. Prithvi was selected because it is one of the first open-source GFMs trained on time-series of high-resolution remote sensing imagery. A series of experiments were designed to assess Prithvi's performance as compared to other pre-trained task-specific AI models in geospatial image analysis. New strategies, including band adaptation, multi-scale feature generation, and fine-tuning techniques, are introduced and integrated into an image analysis pipeline to enhance Prithvi's domain adaptation capability and improve model performance. In-depth analyses reveal Prithvi's strengths and weaknesses, offering insights for both improving Prithvi and developing future visual foundation models for geospatial tasks.

The Gromov--Hausdorff distance measures the similarity between two metric spaces by isometrically embedding them into an ambient metric space. In this work, we introduce an analogue of this distance for metric spaces endowed with directed structures. The directed Gromov--Hausdorff distance measures the distance between two new (extended) metric spaces, where the new metric, on the same underlying space, is induced from the length of the zigzag paths. This distance is then computed by isometrically embedding the directed spaces, endowed with the zigzag metric, into an ambient directed space with respect to such zigzag distance. Analogously to the standard Gromov--Hausdorff distance, we propose alternative definitions based on the distortion of d-maps and d-correspondences. Unlike the classical case, these directed distances are not equivalent.

Understanding the complex nature of spatial information is crucial for problem solving in social and environmental sciences. This study investigates how the underlying patterns of spatial data can significantly influence the outcomes of spatial predictions. Recognizing unique characteristics of spatial data, such as spatial dependence and spatial heterogeneity, we delve into the fundamental differences and similarities between spatial and non-geospatial prediction models. Through the analysis of six different datasets of environment and socio-economic variables, comparing geospatial models with non-geospatial models, our research highlights the pervasive nature of spatial dependence beyond geographical boundaries. This innovative approach not only recognizes spatial dependence in geographic spaces defined by latitude and longitude but also identifies its presence in non-geographic, attribute-based dimensions. Our findings reveal the pervasive influence of spatial dependence on prediction outcomes across various domains, and spatial dependence significantly influences prediction performance across all spaces. Our findings suggest that the strongest spatial dependence is typically found in geographic space for environment variables, a trend that does not uniformly apply to socio-economic variables. This investigation not only advances the theoretical framework for spatial data analysis, but also proposes new methodologies for accurately capturing and expressing spatial dependence under complex conditions. Our research extends spatial analysis to non-geographic dimensions such as social networks and gene expression patterns, emphasizing the role of spatial dependence in improving prediction accuracy, thereby supporting interdisciplinary applications across fields such as geographic information science, environmental science, economics, sociology, and bioinformatics.

As a potential non-invasive biomarker for ischaemic stroke, intracranial arterial calcification (IAC) could be used for stroke risk assessment on CT head scans routinely acquired for other reasons (e.g. trauma, confusion). Artificial intelligence methods can support IAC scoring, but they have not yet been developed for clinical imaging. Large heterogeneous clinical CT datasets are necessary for the training of such methods, but they exhibit expected and unexpected data anomalies. Using CTs from a large clinical trial, the third International Stroke Trial (IST-3), we propose a pipeline that uses as input non-enhanced CT scans to output regions of interest capturing selected large intracranial arteries for IAC scoring. Our method uses co-registration with templates. We focus on quality control, using information presence along the z-axis of the imaging to group and apply similarity measures (structural similarity index measure) to triage assessment of individual image series. Additionally, we propose superimposing thresholded binary masks of the series to inspect large quantities of data in parallel. We identify and exclude unrecoverable samples and registration failures. In total, our pipeline processes 10,659 CT series, rejecting 4,322 (41%) in the entire process, 1,450 (14% of the total) during quality control, and outputting 6,337 series. Dielectrics are crucial for technologies like flash memory, CPUs, photovoltaics, and capacitors, but public data on these materials are scarce, restricting research and development. Existing machine learning models have focused on predicting scalar polycrystalline dielectric constants, neglecting the directional nature of dielectric tensors essential for material design. This study leverages multi-rank equivariant structural embeddings from a universal neural network potential to enhance predictions of dielectric tensors. We develop an equivariant readout decoder to predict total, electronic, and ionic dielectric tensors while preserving O(3) equivariance, and benchmark its performance against state-of-the-art algorithms. Virtual screening of thermodynamically stable materials from Materials Project for two discovery tasks, high-dielectric and highly anisotropic materials, identifies promising candidates including Cs2Ti(WO4)3 (band gap $E_g=2.93 \mathrm{eV}$, dielectric constant $\varepsilon=180.90$) and CsZrCuSe3 (anisotropic ratio $\alpha_r = 121.89$). The results demonstrate our model's accuracy in predicting dielectric tensors and its potential for discovering novel dielectric materials.

Clouds play a crucial role in the Earth's water and energy cycles, underscoring the importance of high spatiotemporal resolution data on cloud phase and properties for accurate numerical modeling and weather prediction. Currently, Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) provides cloud products with a spatial resolution of 1 km. However, these products suffer from a lengthy revisit cycle. This study develops a generative diffusion model (donated as CloudDiff) for super-resolution retrieval of high spatiotemporal cloud phase and properties, applicable both day and night. Leveraging 2 km spatial resolution Himawari-8 Advanced Himawari Imager (AHI) thermal infrared (TIR) radiances and viewing geometry as condition, alongside daytime MODIS products as targets, the model can generate cloud phase (CLP), cloud top height (CTH), cloud optical thickness (COT), and cloud effective radius (CER) at 1 km spatial resolution and 10-minute temporal resolution. The conditional diffusion model can generate sharper images and capture finer local features than deterministic super-resolution approaches. It draws multiple samples based on the underlying probability distribution, enabling retrieval uncertainty assessment. Evaluations show agreement between cloud phase and properties derived from the CloudDiff and MODIS cloud products. The ensemble mean is found to enhance retrieval accuracy and credibility, outperforming the deterministic model.

Flood inundation mapping is a critical task for responding to the increasing risk of flooding linked to global warming. Significant advancements of deep learning in recent years have triggered its extensive applications, including flood inundation mapping. To cope with the time-consuming and labor-intensive data labeling process in supervised learning, deep active learning strategies are one of the feasible approaches. However, there remains limited exploration into the interpretability of how deep active learning strategies operate, with a specific focus on flood inundation mapping in the field of remote sensing. In this study, we introduce a novel framework of Interpretable Deep Active Learning for Flood inundation Mapping (IDAL-FIM), specifically in terms of class ambiguity of multi-spectral satellite images. In the experiments, we utilize Sen1Floods11 dataset, and adopt U-Net with MC-dropout. In addition, we employ five acquisition functions, which are the random, K-means, BALD, entropy, and margin acquisition functions. Based on the experimental results, we demonstrate that two proposed class ambiguity indices are effective variables to interpret the deep active learning by establishing statistically significant correlation with the predictive uncertainty of the deep learning model at the tile level. In this paper, we study pointwise finite-dimensional (p.f.d.) $2$-parameter persistence modules where each module admits a finite convex isotopy subdivision. We show that a p.f.d. $2$-parameter persistence module $M$ (with a finite convex isotopy subdivision) is isomorphic to a $2$-parameter persistence module $N$ where the restriction of $N$ to each chamber of the parameter space $(\mathbb{R},\leq)^2$ is a constant functor. Moreover, we show that the convex isotopy subdivision of $M$ induces a finite encoding of $M$. The polarization characteristics of atmospheric scattering are important and should not be ignored in radiative transfer simulations. In this study, a new vector radiative transfer model called the polarized adding method of discrete ordinate approximation (POLDDA) is proposed for use in remote sensing applications for ultraviolet-visible and near-infrared spectra. The single-layer radiative transfer process and inhomogeneous multi-layer connection are solved using the discrete ordinate method (DOM) and adding methods, respectively. By combining the advantages of DOM and the adding method, the Stokes vector (including the I-, Q-, U-, and V-components) calculated using the new method conforms to the results of PolRadtran/RT3, whether in a Rayleigh scattering atmosphere or the water cloud case. Moreover, the relative root-mean-square error (RMSE) values of the Stokes vector for the test cases between MYSTIC and the new method or RT3 prove the accuracy of the proposed method. Meanwhile, the new method has a higher computational efficiency than RT3, particularly for an atmosphere with a large scattering optical depth. Unlike RT3, the computation time of the proposed method does not increase with the optical depth of each layer.

GeoAI has emerged as an exciting interdisciplinary research area that combines spatial theories and data with cutting-edge AI models to address geospatial problems in a novel, data-driven manner. While GeoAI research has flourished in the GIScience literature, its reproducibility and replicability (R&R), fundamental principles that determine the reusability, reliability, and scientific rigor of research findings, have rarely been discussed. This paper aims to provide an in-depth analysis of this topic from both computational and spatial perspectives. We first categorize the major goals for reproducing GeoAI research, namely, validation (repeatability), learning and adapting the method for solving a similar or new problem (reproducibility), and examining the generalizability of the research findings (replicability). Each of these goals requires different levels of understanding of GeoAI, as well as different methods to ensure its success. We then discuss the factors that may cause the lack of R&R in GeoAI research, with an emphasis on (1) the selection and use of training data; (2) the uncertainty that resides in the GeoAI model design, training, deployment, and inference processes; and more importantly (3) the inherent spatial heterogeneity of geospatial data and processes. We use a deep learning-based image analysis task as an example to demonstrate the results' uncertainty and spatial variance caused by different factors. The findings reiterate the importance of knowledge sharing, as well as the generation of a "replicability map" that incorporates spatial autocorrelation and spatial heterogeneity into consideration in quantifying the spatial replicability of GeoAI research., Comment: Accepted by Annals of the American Association of Geographers

Satellite remote sensing serves as a crucial means to acquire cloud physical parameters. However, existing official cloud products derived from the advanced geostationary radiation imager (AGRI) onboard the Fengyun-4A geostationary satellite suffer from limitations in computational precision and efficiency. In this study, an image-based transfer learning model (ITLM) was developed to realize all-day and high-precision retrieval of cloud physical parameters using AGRI thermal infrared measurements and auxiliary data. Combining the observation advantages of geostationary and polar-orbiting satellites, ITLM was pre-trained and transfer-trained with official cloud products from advanced Himawari imager (AHI) and Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS), respectively. Taking official MODIS products as the benchmarks, ITLM achieved an overall accuracy of 79.93% for identifying cloud phase and root mean squared errors of 1.85 km, 6.72 um, and 12.79 for estimating cloud top height, cloud effective radius, and cloud optical thickness, outperforming the precision of official AGRI and AHI products. Compared to the pixel-based random forest model, ITLM utilized the spatial information of clouds to significantly improve the retrieval performance and achieve more than a 6-fold increase in speed for a single full-disk retrieval. Moreover, the AGRI ITLM products with spatiotemporal continuity and high precision were used to accurately describe the spatial distribution characteristics of cloud fractions and cloud properties over the Tibetan Plateau (TP) during both daytime and nighttime, and for the first time provide insights into the diurnal variation of cloud cover and cloud properties for total clouds and deep convective clouds across different seasons.

Big earth science data offers the scientific community great opportunities. Many more studies at large-scales, over long-terms and at high resolution can now be conducted using the rich information collected by remote sensing satellites, ground-based sensor networks, and even social media input. However, the hundreds of terabytes of information collected and compiled on an hourly basis by NASA and other government agencies present a significant challenge for atmospheric scientists seeking to improve the understanding of the Earth atmospheric system. These challenges include effective discovery, organization, analysis and visualization of large amounts of data. This paper reports the outcomes of an NSF-funded project that developed a geospatial cyberinfrastructure -- the A2CI (Atmospheric Analysis Cyberinfrastructure) -- to support atmospheric research. We first introduce the service-oriented system framework then describe in detail the implementation of the data discovery module, data management module, data integration module, data analysis and visualization modules following the cloud computing principles-Data-as-a-Service, Software-as-a-Service, Platform-as-a-Service and Infrastructure-as-a-Service. We demonstrate the graphic user interface by performing an analysis between Sea Surface Temperature and the intensity of tropical storms in the North Atlantic and Pacific oceans. We expect this work to contribute to the technical advancement of cyberinfrastructure research as well as to the development of an online, collaborative scientific analysis system for atmospheric science.

GeoAI, or geospatial artificial intelligence, is an exciting new area that leverages artificial intelligence (AI), geospatial big data, and massive computing power to solve problems with high automation and intelligence.
