1. Nihilism Lost and Found: Brassier, Jonas, and Nishitani on Embracing and/or Overcoming Nihilism

Abstract: This essay confronts Ray Brassier’s vindication of nihilism with other two important but frequently underexamined philosophical attempts to overcome nihilism: Hans Jonas’ and Keiji Nishitani’s. By putting these different takes on nihilism into dialogue, it explores some blind spots in Brassier’s position, as well as some of the practical consequences, for our current planetary situation, of undertaking a radical divorce between the normative and the natural that results from his radical nihilism. The article opts for a more moderate acceptance and eventual self-overcoming of nihilism, according to which, even if natural entities are indifferent to human reasons and meanings, this does not entail that nature is bereft of a human-independent normative dimension. In other words, the essay argues that care must be taken not to confuse criticisms of an anthropocentric conception of reasons and meanings with the belief that meaning is completely absent from the natural world. Thus, the central contention of the article is that, given our current climate and ecological catastrophe, one of the most pressing tasks of contemporary philosophy is to understand normativity in non-anthropocentric ways, so that humans are no longer considered as the only entities that respond to normativity. Such an attitude conceives humans as estranged normative creatures amidst a meaningless, indifferent natural world, toward which they would have no ethical responsibilities. The essay finishes by suggesting ways in which to develop an account that does not fall into this ethical vacuum.

2. Well-posedness of a first order in time nonlinear wave equation with nonhomogeneous Dirichlet or Neumann type boundary conditions in fractional Sobolev spaces

Abstract: In this paper, we analyze the well-posedness of a first order in time nonlinear wave equation with nonhomogeneous Dirichlet or Neumann type boundary conditions, also known as known as Hodge, Lions or Navier-slip boundary conditions, in fractional Sobolev spaces. We do this by first showing the well-posedness of an abstract system and then apply the results to concrete operators and function spaces that represent the different boundary conditions in an appropriate sense. The analysis of the abstract system is based on a spectral decomposition of a positive self adjoint operator. The regularity of the solution is given in terms of the domains of fractional powers of this operator. Using Galerkins method and Newton-Kantorovich Theorem, we prove well-posedness of the abstract nonlinear system with possibly nonhomogeneous boundary conditions. The connection between the domains of fractional powers of the operator and fractional Sobolev spaces makes it possible to obtain results for a system with nonhomogeneous Dirichlet boundary conditions with fractional Sobolev space regularity. For the Neumann type boundary conditions we show an integer valued Sobolev regularity of the solution.

3. Figuring Out Gas & Galaxies in Enzo (FOGGIE). IX: The Angular Momentum Evolution of Milky Way-like Galaxies and their Circumgalactic Gas

Abstract: We investigate the co-evolution of the angular momentum of Milky Way-like galaxies, their circumgalactic gas, and their dark matter halos using zoom-in simulations from the Figuring Out Gas & Galaxies in Enzo (FOGGIE) suite. We examine how the magnitude and orientation of the angular momentum varies over time within the halo and between the components of mass. From z~2 to today, and in general across the simulated halos, the specific angular momenta of the central galaxies and the cool gas in their circumgalactic media (T < 10^5 K) increase together. Over that same period, the specific angular momenta of the hot (>10^6 K) and dark components of the halo change minimally. By z~1, the central galaxies have generally lost association with the angular momentum of their full dark matter halo -- both in magnitude and orientation. We find a wide distribution of angular momentum orientations in the halo, varying by up to 180 degrees over small (~tens of kpc) scales and between the different components of mass. The net angular momenta of the galaxies, their circumgalactic gas, and their dark matter halos are generally misaligned with one another at all cosmic times. 4. Designing and Implementing a Generator Framework for a SIMD Abstraction Library

Abstract: The Single Instruction Multiple Data (SIMD) parallel paradigm is a well-established and heavily-used hardware-driven technique to increase the single-thread performance in different system domains such as database or machine learning. Depending on the hardware vendor and the specific processor generation/version, SIMD capabilities come in different flavors concerning the register size and the supported SIMD instructions. Due to this heterogeneity and the lack of standardized calling conventions, building high-performance and portable systems is a challenging task. To address this challenge, academia and industry have invested a remarkable effort into creating SIMD abstraction libraries that provide unified access to different SIMD hardware capabilities. However, those one-size-fits-all library approaches are inherently complex, which hampers maintainability and extensibility. Furthermore, they assume similar SIMD hardware designs, which may be invalidated through ARM SVE's emergence. Additionally, while existing SIMD abstraction libraries do a great job of hiding away the specifics of the underlying hardware, their lack of expressiveness impedes crucial algorithm design decisions for system developers. To overcome these limitations, we present TSLGen, a novel end-to-end framework approach for generating an SIMD abstraction library in this paper. We have implemented our TSLGen framework and used our generated Template SIMD Library (TSL) to program various system components from different domains. As we will show, the programming effort is comparable to existing libraries, and we achieve the same performance results. Abstract: We present results from a search for X-ray/gamma-ray counterparts of gravitational-wave (GW) candidates from the third observing run (O3) of the LIGO-Virgo-KAGRA (LVK) network using the Swift Burst Alert Telescope (Swift-BAT). The search includes 636 GW candidates received in low latency, 86 of which have been confirmed by the offline analysis and included in the third cumulative Gravitational-Wave Transient Catalogs (GWTC-3). Targeted searches were carried out on the entire GW sample using the maximum--likelihood NITRATES pipeline on the BAT data made available via the GUANO infrastructure. We do not detect any significant electromagnetic emission that is temporally and spatially coincident with any of the GW candidates. We report flux upper limits in the 15-350 keV band as a function of sky position for all the catalog candidates. For GW candidates where the Swift-BAT false alarm rate is less than 10$^{-3}$ Hz, we compute the GW--BAT joint false alarm rate. Finally, the derived Swift-BAT upper limits are used to infer constraints on the putative electromagnetic emission associated with binary black hole mergers., Comment: 50 pages, 10 figures, 4 tables

6. The curvature dependence of gravitational-wave tests of General Relativity

Abstract: High-energy extensions to General Relativity modify the Einstein-Hilbert action with higher-order curvature corrections and theory-specific coupling constants. The order of these corrections imprints a universal curvature dependence on observations while the coupling constant controls the deviation strength. In this Letter, we leverage the theory-independent expectation that modifications to the action of a given order in spacetime curvature (Riemann tensor and contractions) lead to observational deviations that scale with the system length-scale to a corresponding power. Focusing on gravitational wave observations, the relevant scale is the binary total mass, and deviations scale as a power of mass $p$ related to the action order. For example, $p=4,6$ arise in effective field theory for cubic and quartic theories respectively. We incorporate this universal scaling into theory-agnostic tests of General Relativity with current gravitational-wave observations, thus enabling constraints on the curvature scaling without compromising the agnostic nature of these tests. 7. A Diffusion Model Framework for Unsupervised Neural Combinatorial Optimization

Abstract: Learning to sample from intractable distributions over discrete sets without relying on corresponding training data is a central problem in a wide range of fields, including Combinatorial Optimization. Currently, popular deep learning-based approaches rely primarily on generative models that yield exact sample likelihoods. This work introduces a method that lifts this restriction and opens the possibility to employ highly expressive latent variable models like diffusion models. Our approach is conceptually based on a loss that upper bounds the reverse Kullback-Leibler divergence and evades the requirement of exact sample likelihoods. 8. Nonlinear studies of modifications to general relativity: Comparing different approaches

Abstract: Studying the dynamical, nonlinear regime of modified theories of gravity remains a theoretical challenge that limits our ability to test general relativity. Here we consider two generally applicable, but approximate methods for treating modifications to full general relativity that have been used to study binary black hole mergers and other phenomena in this regime, and compare solutions obtained by them to those from solving the full equations of motion. The first method evolves corrections to general relativity order by order in a perturbative expansion, while the second method introduces extra dynamical fields in such a way that strong hyperbolicity is recovered. We use shift-symmetric Einstein-scalar-Gauss-Bonnet gravity as a benchmark theory to illustrate the differences between these methods for several spacetimes of physical interest. We study the formation of scalar hair about initially non-spinning black holes, the collision of black holes with scalar charge, and the inspiral and merger of binary black holes. By directly comparing predictions, we assess the extent to which those from the approximate treatments can be meaningfully confronted with gravitational wave observations. We find that the order-by-order approach cannot faithfully track the solutions when the corrections to general relativity are non-negligible. 10. Energy-based Hopfield Boosting for Out-of-Distribution Detection

Abstract: Out-of-distribution (OOD) detection is critical when deploying machine learning models in the real world. Outlier exposure methods, which incorporate auxiliary outlier data in the training process, can drastically improve OOD detection performance compared to approaches without advanced training strategies. We introduce Hopfield Boosting, a boosting approach, which leverages modern Hopfield energy (MHE) to sharpen the decision boundary between the in-distribution and OOD data. Hopfield Boosting encourages the model to concentrate on hard-to-distinguish auxiliary outlier examples that lie close to the decision boundary between in-distribution and auxiliary outlier data. Our method achieves a new state-of-the-art in OOD detection with outlier exposure, improving the FPR95 metric from 2.28 to 0.92 on CIFAR-10 and from 11.76 to 7.94 on CIFAR-100.

Abstract: We study electromagnetic and gravitational properties of AdS black shells (also referred to as AdS black bubbles) -- a class of quantum gravity motivated black hole mimickers, that in the classical limit are described as ultra compact shells of matter. We find that their electromagnetic properties are remarkably similar to black holes. 12. Infinite dimensional Slow Manifolds for a Linear Fast-Reaction System

Abstract: The aim of this expository paper is twofold. We start with a concise overview of the theory of invariant slow manifolds for fast-slow dynamical systems starting with the work by Tikhonov and Fenichel to the most recent works on infinite-dimensional fast-slow systems. The main part focuses on a class of linear fast-reaction PDE, which are particular forms of fast-reaction systems. The first result shows the convergence of solutions of the linear system to the limit system as the time-scale parameter $\varepsilon$ goes to zero. Moreover, from the explicit solutions the slow manifold is constructed and the convergence to the critical manifold is proven. The subsequent result, then, states a generalized version of the Fenichel-Tikhonov theorem for linear fast-reaction systems.

13. A first order in time wave equation modeling nonlinear acoustics

Abstract: In this paper we focus on a small amplitude approximation of a Navier-Stokes-Fourier system modeling nonlinear acoustics. Omitting all third and higher order terms with respect to certain small parameters, we obtain a first order in time system containing linear and quadratic pressure and velocity terms. Subsequently, the well-posedness of the derived system is shown using the classical method of Galerkin approximation in combination with a fixed point argument. We first prove the well-posedness of a linearized equation using energy estimates and then the well-posedness of the nonlinear system using a Newton-Kantorovich type argument. Based on this, we also obtain global in time well-posedness for small enough data and exponential decay. This is in line with semigroup results for a linear part of the system that we provide as well.

Abstract: Computational methods for assessing the likely impacts of mutations, known as variant effect predictors (VEPs), are widely used in the assessment and interpretation of human genetic variation, as well as in other applications like protein engineering. Many different VEPs have been released to date, and there is tremendous variability in their underlying algorithms and outputs, and in the ways in which the methodologies and predictions are shared. This leads to considerable challenges for end users in knowing which VEPs to use and how to use them. Here, to address these issues, we provide guidelines and recommendations for the release of novel VEPs. Emphasising open-source availability, transparent methodologies, clear variant effect score interpretations, standardised scales, accessible predictions, and rigorous training data disclosure, we aim to improve the usability and interpretability of VEPs, and promote their integration into analysis and evaluation pipelines. Abstract: In August 2023, IT experts and scientists came together for a workshop to discuss the possibilities of building a computer cluster fully on renewable energies, as a test-case at Havana University in Cuba. The discussion covered the scientific needs for a computer cluster for particle physics at the InSTEC institute at Havana University, the possibilities to use solar energy, new developments in computing technologies, and computer cluster operation as well as operational needs for computing in particle physics. This computer cluster on renewable energies at the InSTEC institute is seen as a prototype for a large-scale computer cluster on renewable energies for scientific computing in the Caribbean, hosted in Cuba. The project is called "Humboldt Highway", to remember Alexander von Humboldt's achievements in bringing cultures of the American and European continents closer together by exchange and travel. In this spirit, we propose a project that enables and intensifies the scientific exchange between research laboratories and universities in Europe and the Caribbean, in particular Cuba.

Abstract: We report the observation of a coalescing compact binary with component masses $2.5\text{-}4.5~M_\odot$ and $1.2\text{-}2.0~M_\odot$ (all measurements quoted at the 90% credible level). The gravitational-wave signal GW230529_181500 was observed during the fourth observing run of the LIGO-Virgo-KAGRA detector network on 2023 May 29 by the LIGO Livingston Observatory. The primary component of the source has a mass less than $5~M_\odot$ at 99% credibility. We cannot definitively determine from gravitational-wave data alone whether either component of the source is a neutron star or a black hole. However, given existing estimates of the maximum neutron star mass, we find the most probable interpretation of the source to be the coalescence of a neutron star with a black hole that has a mass between the most massive neutron stars and the least massive black holes observed in the Galaxy. We provisionally estimate a merger rate density of $55^{+127}_{-47}~\text{Gpc}^{-3}\,\text{yr}^{-1}$ for compact binary coalescences with properties similar to the source of GW230529_181500; assuming that the source is a neutron star-black hole merger, GW230529_181500-like sources constitute about 60% of the total merger rate inferred for neutron star-black hole coalescences. 17. Locally finite graphs and their localization numbers

Abstract: We study the Localization game on locally finite graphs trees, where each of the countably many vertices have finite degree. In contrast to the finite case, we construct a locally finite tree with localization number $n$ for any choice of positive integer $n$. Our examples have uncountably many ends, and we show that this is necessary by proving that locally finite trees with finitely or countably many ends have localization number at most 2. Finally, as is the case for finite graphs, we prove that any locally finite graph contains a subdivision where one cop can capture the robber.

18. Self-avoiding walk is ballistic on graphs with more than one end

Abstract: We prove that on any transitive graph $G$ with infinitely many ends, a self-avoiding walk of length $n$ is ballistic with extremely high probability, in the sense that there exist constants $c,t>0$ such that $\mathbb{P}_n(d_G(w_0,w_n)\geq cn)\geq 1-e^{-tn}$ for every $n\geq 1$. Furthermore, we show that the number of self-avoiding walks of length $n$ grows asymptotically like $\mu_w^n$, in the sense that there exists $C>0$ such that $\mu_w^n\leq c_n\leq C\mu_w^n$ for every $n\geq 1$. Our results extend more generally to quasi-transitive graphs with infinitely many ends, satisfying the additional technical property that there is a quasi-transitive group of automorphisms of $G$ which does not fix an end of $G$., Comment: 53 pages, 3 figures

Abstract: Among the various candidates for dark matter (DM), ultralight vector DM can be probed by laser interferometric gravitational wave detectors through the measurement of oscillating length changes in the arm cavities. In this context, KAGRA has a unique feature due to differing compositions of its mirrors, enhancing the signal of vector DM in the length change in the auxiliary channels. Here we present the result of a search for $U(1)_{B-L}$ gauge boson DM using the KAGRA data from auxiliary length channels during the first joint observation run together with GEO600. By applying our search pipeline, which takes into account the stochastic nature of ultralight DM, upper bounds on the coupling strength between the $U(1)_{B-L}$ gauge boson and ordinary matter are obtained for a range of DM masses. While our constraints are less stringent than those derived from previous experiments, this study demonstrates the applicability of our method to the lower-mass vector DM search, which is made difficult in this measurement by the short observation time compared to the auto-correlation time scale of DM., Comment: 20 pages, 5 figures

20. The COS CGM Compendium V: The Dichotomy of OVI Associated with Low- and High-Metallicity Cool Gas at z < 1

Abstract: We analyze the \ovi\ content and kinematics for 126 {\hi}-selected absorbers at $0.14 \lesssim z \lesssim 0.73$ for which the metallicities of their cool photoionized phase have been determined. We separate the absorbers into 100 strong {\lya} forest systems (SLFSs with $15 \la$\,{\colden}\,$< 16.2$) and 26 partial Lyman Limit systems (pLLSs with $16.2\le$\,{\colden}\,$\le 17.2$). The sample is drawn from the COS CGM Compendium (CCC) and has \ovi\ coverage in $\sn \geq 8$ {\it HST}/COS G130M/G160M QSO spectra, yielding a $2\sigma$ completeness level of {\coldenovi}$\,\geq 13.6$. The \ovi\ detection rates differ substantially between low-metallicity (LM; {\xh} $\leq -1.4$) and high-metallicity (HM; {\xh} $> -1.4$) SLFSs, with 20\% and 60\% detection rates, respectively. The \ovi\ detection frequency for the HM and LM pLLSs is, however, similar at $\sim$60\%. The SLFSs and pLLSs without detected \ovi\ are consistent with the absorbing gas being in a single phase, while those with \ovi\ trace multiphase gas. We show that the \ovi\ velocity widths and column densities have different distributions in LM and HM gas. We find a strong correlation between \ovi\ column density and metallicity. The strongest (\coldenovi$\,\ga 14$) and broadest {\ovi} absorbers are nearly always associated with HM absorbers, while weaker \ovi\ absorbers are found in both LM and HM absorbers. From comparisons with galaxy-selected and blind \ovi\ surveys, we conclude absorbers with \coldenovi$\,\ga 14$ most likely arise in the circumgalactic medium (CGM) of star-forming galaxies. 21. Folding polyominoes into cubes

Abstract: Which polyominoes can be folded into a cube, using only creases along edges of the square lattice underlying the polyomino, with fold angles of $\pm 90^\circ$ and $\pm 180^\circ$, and allowing faces of the cube to be covered multiple times? Prior results studied tree-shaped polyominoes and polyominoes with holes and gave partial classifications for these cases. We show that there is an algorithm deciding whether a given polyomino can be folded into a cube. This algorithm essentially amounts to trying all possible ways of mapping faces of the polyomino to faces of the cube, but (perhaps surprisingly) checking whether such a mapping corresponds to a valid folding is equivalent to the unlink recognition problem from topology. We also give further results on classes of polyominoes which can or cannot be folded into cubes. Our results include (1) a full characterisation of all tree-shaped polyominoes that can be folded into the cube (2) that any rectangular polyomino which contains only one simple hole (out of five different types) does not fold into a cube, (3) a complete characterisation when a rectangular polyomino with two or more unit square holes (but no other holes) can be folded into a cube, and (4) a sufficient condition when a simply-connected polyomino can be folded to a cube. These results answer several open problems of previous work and close the cases of tree-shaped polyominoes and rectangular polyominoes with just one simple hole.

22. Overcoming Saturation in Density Ratio Estimation by Iterated Regularization

Abstract: Estimating the ratio of two probability densities from finitely many samples, is a central task in machine learning and statistics. In this work, we show that a large class of kernel methods for density ratio estimation suffers from error saturation, which prevents algorithms from achieving fast error convergence rates on highly regular learning problems. To resolve saturation, we introduce iterated regularization in density ratio estimation to achieve fast error rates. Our methods outperform its non-iteratively regularized versions on benchmarks for density ratio estimation as well as on large-scale evaluations for importance-weighted ensembling of deep unsupervised domain adaptation models.

Abstract: The multi-scale transport and exchange processes in the atmosphere over mountains -- programme and experiment (TEAMx) wants to advance the understanding of transport and exchange processes over mountainous terrain as well as to collect unique multi-scale datasets that can be used, e.g., for process studies, model development and model evaluation. The TEAMx Observational Campaign (TOC) is planned to take place between 2024 and 2025. In summer 2022 a TEAMx pre-campaign (TEAMx-PC22) was conducted in the Inn Valley and one of its tributaries, the Weer Valley, to test the suitability and required logistics of measurement sites, to evaluate their value for the main campaign, and to test new observation techniques in complex terrain. Scientifically, this campaign focused on resolving the mountain boundary layer and valley wind systems on multiple scales. Through the combined effort of six institutions the pre-campaign can be deemed successful. A detailed description of the setup at each sub-target area is given. Due to the spatial distribution of instruments and their spatio-temporal resolution, atmospheric processes and phenomena like valley winds have been investigated at different locations and on different scales. Furthermore, scale interactions were detected and are discussed in detail in two example cases. Additionally, observational gaps were determined which should be closed for the TOC. Abstract: We have characterized the electronic properties of a high-mobility two-dimensional electron system in modulation doped InAsSb quantum wells and compare them to InSb quantum wells grown in a similar fashion. Using temperature-dependent Shubnikov-de Haas experiments as well as FIR transmission we find an effective mass of $m^{\ast} \approx$ 0.022$m_{e}$, which is lower than in the investigated InSb quantum well, but due to a rather strong confinement still higher than in the corresponding bulk compound. The effective $g$-factor was determined to be $g^{\ast} \approx$ 21.9. These results are also corroborated by $k \cdot p$ band structure calculations. When spin polarizing the electrons in a tilted magnetic field, the $g$-factor is significantly enhanced by electron-electron interactions, reaching a value as large as $g^{\ast}$ = 60 at a spin polarization P = 0.75. Finally, we show that due to the low effective mass the quantum Hall effect in our particular sample can be observed up to a temperature of 60 K and we propose scenarios how to increase this temperature even further., Comment: 12 pages, 15 figures

Abstract: Several recent unsupervised learning methods use probabilistic approaches to solve combinatorial optimization (CO) problems based on the assumption of statistically independent solution variables. We demonstrate that this assumption imposes performance limitations in particular on difficult problem instances. Our results corroborate that an autoregressive approach which captures statistical dependencies among solution variables yields superior performance on many popular CO problems. We introduce subgraph tokenization in which the configuration of a set of solution variables is represented by a single token. This tokenization technique alleviates the drawback of the long sequential sampling procedure which is inherent to autoregressive methods without sacrificing expressivity. Abstract: We study the problem of conditional expectations in free random variables and provide closed formulas for the conditional expectation of resolvents of arbitrary non-commutative polynomials in free random variables onto the subalgebra of an arbitray subset of the variables. More precisely, given a linearization of the resolvent we compute a linearization of its conditional expectation. The coefficients of the expressions obtained in this process involve certain Boolean cumulant functionals which can be computed by solving a system of equations. On the way towards the main result we introduce a non-commutative differential calculus which allows to evaluate conditional expectations and the said Boolean cumulant functionals. Abstract: The strict classroom control philosophy often adopted within public schools can have counterproductive effects on students, especially African Diaspora and Latinx students. Public schools should ideally provide quality instruction for all students. Unfortunately, teacher-centered practices reinforce stereotypes that African Diaspora and Latinx students are unruly and need institutionally imposed discipline and management, thereby undermining the mission of equitable educational achievement. Students, especially diverse urban students, would benefit from a shift in classroom management from strict control and discipline to student-centered inclusion and cooperative inquiry. We recommend distributive classroom management and examine the practice in the context of its enactment by stakeholders in one social studies classroom in the East New York Alternative Learning Center. Under this model, students demonstrated distributed classroom management actions that fostered improved classroom behaviors and expressions of group solidarity. Students maintained a fertile learning environment by proposing a distributive management practice during the research period. Additionally, students enacted the same approach in the classroom. The study's findings suggest that teachers and students can integrate standard classroom management rules with transformative stakeholder-directed practices to benefit all participants.

Abstract: Since real-world training datasets cannot properly sample the long tail of the underlying data distribution, corner cases and rare out-of-domain samples can severely hinder the performance of state-of-the-art models. This problem becomes even more severe for dense tasks, such as 3D semantic segmentation, where points of non-standard objects can be confidently associated to the wrong class. In this work, we focus on improving the generalization to out-of-domain data. We achieve this by augmenting the training set with adversarial examples. First, we learn a set of vectors that deform the objects in an adversarial fashion. To prevent the adversarial examples from being too far from the existing data distribution, we preserve their plausibility through a series of constraints, ensuring sensor-awareness and shapes smoothness. Then, we perform adversarial augmentation by applying the learned sample-independent vectors to the available objects when training a model. We conduct extensive experiments across a variety of scenarios on data from KITTI, Waymo, and CrashD for 3D object detection, and on data from SemanticKITTI, Waymo, and nuScenes for 3D semantic segmentation. Abstract: We study pairs $(A,B)$ of square matrices that are in additive (resp. multiplicative) finite free position, that is, the characteristic polynomial $\chi_{A+B}(x)$ (resp. $\chi_{AB}(x)$) equals the additive finite free convolution $\chi_{A}(x) \boxplus \chi_{B}(x)$ (resp. multiplicative finite free convolution $\chi_{A}(x) \boxtimes \chi_{B}(x)$), which equals the expected characteristic polynomial $\mathbb{E}_U \, [ \chi_{A+U^* BU}(x) ]$ (resp. $\mathbb{E}_U \, [ \chi_{AU^* BU}(x) ]$) over the set of unitary matrices $U$. We examine the lattice of algebraic varieties of matrices consisting of finite free complementary pairs with respect to the additive (resp. multiplicative) convolution. We show that these pairs include the diagonal matrices vs. the principally balanced matrices, the upper (lower) triangular matrices vs. the upper (lower) triangular matrices with a single eigenvalue, and the scalar matrices vs. the set of all square matrices.

Abstract: Despite the growing number of confident binary black hole coalescences observed through gravitational waves so far, the astrophysical origin of these binaries remains uncertain. Orbital eccentricity is one of the clearest tracers of binary formation channels. Identifying binary eccentricity, however, remains challenging due to the limited availability of gravitational waveforms that include effects of eccentricity. Here, we present observational results for a waveform-independent search sensitive to eccentric black hole coalescences, covering the third observing run (O3) of the LIGO and Virgo detectors. We identified no new high-significance candidates beyond those that were already identified with searches focusing on quasi-circular binaries. We determine the sensitivity of our search to high-mass (total mass $M>70$ $M_\odot$) binaries covering eccentricities up to 0.3 at 15 Hz orbital frequency, and use this to compare model predictions to search results. Assuming all detections are indeed quasi-circular, for our fiducial population model, we place an upper limit for the merger rate density of high-mass binaries with eccentricities $0 < e \leq 0.3$ at $0.33$ Gpc$^{-3}$ yr$^{-1}$ at 90\% confidence level., Comment: 24 pages, 5 figures

46. Observed humidity trends in dry regions contradict climate models.

Abstract: Arid and semi-arid regions of the world are particularly vulnerable to greenhouse gas-driven hydroclimate change. Climate models are our primary tool for projecting the future hydroclimate that society in these regions must adapt to, but here, we present a concerning discrepancy between observed and model-based historical hydroclimate trends. Over the arid/semi-arid regions of the world, the predominant signal in all model simulations is an increase in atmospheric water vapor, on average, over the last four decades, in association with the increased water vapor-holding capacity of a warmer atmosphere. In observations, this increase in atmospheric water vapor has not happened, suggesting that the availability of moisture to satisfy the increased atmospheric demand is lower in reality than in models in arid/semi-arid regions. This discrepancy is most clear in locations that are arid/semi-arid year round, but it is also apparent in more humid regions during the most arid months of the year. It indicates a major gap in our understanding and modeling capabilities which could have severe implications for hydroclimate projections, including fire hazard, moving forward.

48. A combination of carbonates and Opuntia ficus-indica extract protects esophageal cells against simulated acidic and non-acidic reflux in vitro

Abstract: Abstract Buffering of stomach acid by antacids is a well-established symptomatic therapy for heartburn. In addition, preparations from prickly pear (Opuntia ficus-indica) have been shown to reduce tissue damage in experimental gastritis models and to attenuate gastrointestinal discomfort in patients. Both active principles have been included in a fixed-combination product for symptomatic treatment of heartburn containing carbonate antacids (CaCO3 and MgCO3) and an extract from Opuntia ficus-indica cladodes. The aim of the study was to characterize the acid neutralization and esophageal cell protective activities of the product and its individual active ingredients in a set of in vitro assays. Acid neutralization was assessed in a simulated stomach model. Protective activity of individual constituents and in combination was analyzed in an esophageal cell line (COLO-680 N) exposed to low pH and deoxycholic acid to simulate acidic and non-acidic reflux challenge. The combination product protected cells against low pH mediated cytotoxicity via acid neutralization by carbonates. Opuntia extract itself and the combination product attenuated bile acid-induced cell irritation as measured by reduced release of proinflammatory interleukin-6 and -8. In conclusion, addition of Opuntia extract to a mineral antacid provides dual protection against acidic and non-acidic simulated reflux challenge.

Abstract: The ID10 beamline of the SESAME (Synchrotron-light for Experimental Science and Applications in the Middle East) synchrotron light source in Jordan was inaugurated in June 2023 and is now open to scientific users. The beamline, which was designed and installed within the European Horizon 2020 project BEAmline for Tomography at SESAME (BEATS), provides full-field X-ray radiography and microtomography imaging with monochromatic or polychromatic X-rays up to photon energies of 100 keV. The photon source generated by a 2.9 T wavelength shifter with variable gap, and a double-multilayer monochromator system allow versatile application for experiments requiring either an X-ray beam with high intensity and flux, and/or a partially spatial coherent beam for phase-contrast applications. Sample manipulation and X-ray detection systems are designed to allow scanning samples with different size, weight and material, providing image voxel sizes from 13 µm down to 0.33 µm. A state-of-the-art computing infrastructure for data collection, three-dimensional (3D) image reconstruction and data analysis allows the visualization and exploration of results online within a few seconds from the completion of a scan. Insights from 3D X-ray imaging are key to the investigation of specimens from archaeology and cultural heritage, biology and health sciences, materials science and engineering, earth, environmental sciences and more. Microtomography scans and preliminary results obtained at the beamline demonstrate that the new beamline ID10-BEATS expands significantly the range of scientific applications that can be targeted at SESAME.

Abstract: Abstract Objective Perineuronal nets (PNN) are specialized extracellular matrix (ECM) components of the central nervous system, frequently accumulating at the surface of inhibitory GABAergic interneurons. While an altered distribution of PNN has been observed in neurological disorders including Alzheimer's disease, schizophrenia and epilepsy, their anatomical distribution also changes during physiological brain maturation and aging. Such an age‐dependent shift was experimentally associated also with hippocampal engram formation during brain maturation. Our aim was to histopathologically assess PNN in the hippocampus of adult and pediatric patients with temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE) compared to age‐matched post‐mortem control subjects and to compare PNN‐related changes with memory impairment observed in our patient cohort. Methods Sixty‐six formalin‐fixed and paraffin‐embedded tissue specimens of the human hippocampus were retrieved from the European Epilepsy Brain Bank. Twenty‐nine patients had histopathologically confirmed hippocampal sclerosis (HS), and eleven patients suffered from TLE without HS. PNN were immunohistochemically visualized using an antibody directed against aggrecan and manually counted from hippocampus subfields and the subiculum. Results PNN density increased with age in both human controls and TLE patients. However, their density was significantly higher in all HS patients compared to age‐matched controls.
