Search

Exoplanets form from circumstellar protoplanetary discs whose fundamental properties (notably their extent, composition, mass, temperature and lifetime) depend on the host star properties, such as their mass and luminosity. B-stars are among the most massive stars and their protoplanetary discs test extreme conditions for exoplanet formation. This paper investigates the frequency of giant planet companions around young B-stars (median age of 16 Myr) in the Scorpius-Centaurus association, the closest association containing a large population of B-stars. We systematically search for massive exoplanets with the high-contrast direct imaging instrument SPHERE using the data from the BEAST survey, that targets an homogeneous sample of young B-stars from the wide Sco-Cen association. We derive accurate detection limits in case of non-detections. We found evidence in previous papers for two substellar companions around 42 stars. The masses of these companions are straddling the ~13 Jupiter mass deuterium burning limit but their mass ratio with respect to their host star is close to that of Jupiter. We derive a frequency of such massive planetary mass companions around B stars of 11-5+7%, accounting for the survey sensitivity. The discoveries of substellar companions bcen b and mu2sco B happened after only few stars in the survey had been observed, raising the possibility that massive Jovian planets might be common around B-stars. However our statistical analysis show that the occurrence rate of such planets is similar around B-stars and around solar-type stars of similar age, while B-star companions exhibit low mass ratios and larger semi-major axis., Comment: Accepted in A&A

$\eta$ Tel is an 18 Myr system with a 2.09 M$_{\odot}$ A-type star and an M7-M8 brown dwarf companion, $\eta$ Tel B, separated by 4.2'' (208 au). High-contrast imaging campaigns over 20 years have enabled orbital and photometric characterization. $\eta$ Tel B, bright and on a wide orbit, is ideal for detailed examination. We analyzed three new SPHERE/IRDIS coronagraphic observations to explore $\eta$ Tel B's orbital parameters, contrast, and surroundings, aiming to detect a circumplanetary disk or close companion. Reduced IRDIS data achieved a contrast of 1.0$\times 10^{-5}$, enabling astrometric measurements with uncertainties of 4 mas in separation and 0.2 degrees in position angle, the smallest so far. With a contrast of 6.8 magnitudes in the H band, $\eta$ Tel B's separation and position angle were measured as 4.218'' and 167.3 degrees, respectively. Orbital analysis using Orvara code, considering Gaia-Hipparcos acceleration, revealed a low eccentric orbit (e $\sim$ 0.34), inclination of 81.9 degrees, and semi-major axis of 218 au. $\eta$ Tel B's mass was determined to be 48 \MJup, consistent with previous calculations. No significant residual indicating a satellite or disk around $\eta$ Tel B was detected. We carried out very deep VLT/SPHERE imaging polarimetry of the nearby system Eps Eri based on 38.5 hours of integration time with a 600 - 900 nm broadband filter to search for polarized scattered light from a planet or from circumstellar dust using AO, coronagraphy, high precision differential polarimetry, and angular differential imaging. We have improved several data reduction and post-processing techniques and also developed new ones to further increase the sensitivity of SPHERE/ZIMPOL. The data provide unprecedented contrast limits, but no significant detection of a point source or an extended signal from circumstellar dust. For each observing epoch, we obtained a point source contrast for the polarized intensity between $2\cdot 10^{-8}$ and $4\cdot 10^{-8}$ at the expected separation of the planet Eps Eri b of 1'' near quadrature phase. The polarimetric contrast limits are about six to 50 times better than the intensity limits because polarimetric imaging is much more efficient in speckle suppression. Combining the entire 14-month data set to the search for a planet moving on a Keplerian orbit with the K-Stacker software further improves the contrast limits by a factor of about two, to about $8 \cdot 10^{-9}$ at 1''. This would allow the detection of a planet with a radius of about 2.5 Jupiter radii. The surface brightness contrast limits achieved for the polarized intensity from an extended scattering region are about 15 mag arcsec$^{-2}$ at 1'', or up to 3 mag arcsec$^{-2}$ deeper than previous limits. For Eps Eri, these limits exclude the presence of a narrow dust ring and they constrain the dust properties. This study shows that the polarimetric contrast limits for reflecting planets with SPHERE/ZIMPOL can be improved to a level $<10^{-8}$ simply by collecting more data over many nights and using the K-Stacker software., Comment: 26 pages, 20 figures, 5 tables. We used VLT/SPHERE to observe 20 systems in the Cha I cloud in polarized scattered light in the near-infrared. We combined the scattered light observations with existing literature data on stellar properties and with archival ALMA continuum data to study trends with system age and dust mass. We also connected resolved near-infrared observations with the spectral energy distributions of the systems. In 13 of the 20 systems included in this study we detected resolved scattered light signals from circumstellar dust. For the CR Cha, CT Cha, CV Cha, SY Cha, SZ Cha, and VZ Cha systems we present the first detailed descriptions of the disks in scattered light. The observations found typically smooth or faint disks, often with little substructure, with the notable exceptions of SZ Cha, which shows an extended multiple-ringed disk, and WW Cha, which shows interaction with the cloud environment. New high S/N K- band observations of the HD 97048 system in our survey reveal a significant brightness asymmetry that may point to disk misalignment and subsequent shadowing of outer disk regions, possibly related to the suggested planet candidate in the disk. We resolve for the first time the stellar binary in the CS Cha system. Multiple wavelength observations of the disk around CS Cha have revealed that the system contains small, compact dust grains that may be strongly settled, consistent with numerical studies of circumbinary disks. We find in our sample that there is a strong anti-correlation between the presence of a (close) stellar companion and the detection of circumstellar material with five of our seven nondetections located in binary systems., Comment: Accepted by A&A

We discuss the properties of companions to B stars in the Scorpius-Centaurus association (age ~15 Myr, 181 B-stars). We gathered available data combining high contrast imaging samples with evidence of companions from Gaia, from eclipsing binaries, and from spectroscopy. We evaluated the completeness of the binary search and estimated the mass and semi-major axis for all detected companions. These data provide a complete sample of stellar secondaries for separation >3 au, and they are highly informative as to closer companions. We found evidence for 200 companions around 181 stars. The fraction of single star is 15.2\pm 4.1% for stars with M_A>3.5 Msun while it is 31.5\pm 5.9% for lower-mass stars. The median semi-major axis of the orbits of the companions is smaller for B than in A stars, confirming a turn-over previously found for OB stars. The mass distribution of the very wide (a>1000 au) and closer companions is different. Very few companions of massive stars M_A>5.0 Msun have a mass below solar and even fewer are M stars with a semi-major axis <1000 au. The scarcity of low-mass companions extends throughout the whole sample. Most early B stars are in compact systems with massive secondaries, while lower-mass stars are mainly in wider systems with a larger spread in mass ratios. We interpret our results as the formation of secondaries with a semi-major axis <1000 au (about 80% of the total) by fragmentation of the disk of the primary and selective mass accretion on the secondaries. The observed trends with primary mass may be explained by a more prolonged phase of accretion episodes on the disk and by a more effective inward migration. Observational data from space and ground-based campaigns reveal that the 10-30 Ma old V1298 Tau star hosts a compact and massive system of four planets. Mass estimates for the two outer giant planets point to unexpectedly high densities for their young ages. We investigate the formation of these two outermost giant planets, V1298 Tau b and e, and the present dynamical state of V1298 Tau's global architecture to shed light on the history of this young and peculiar extrasolar system. We perform detailed N-body simulations to explore the link between the densities of V1298 Tau b and e and their migration and accretion of planetesimals within the native circumstellar disk. We combine N-body simulations and the normalized angular momentum deficit (NAMD) analysis to characterize V1298 Tau's dynamical state and connect it to the formation history of the system. We search for outer planetary companions to constrain V1298 Tau's architecture and the extension of its primordial circumstellar disk. The high densities of V1298 Tau b and e suggest they formed quite distant from their host star, likely beyond the CO$_2$ snowline. The higher nominal density of V1298 Tau e suggests it formed farther out than V1298 Tau b. The current architecture of V1298 Tau is not characterized by resonant chains. Planet-planet scattering with an outer giant planet is the most likely cause for the instability, but our search for outer companions using SPHERE and GAIA observations excludes only the presence of planets more massive than 2 M$_\textrm{J}$. The most plausible scenario for V1298 Tau's formation is that the system is formed by convergent migration and resonant trapping of planets born in a compact and plausibly massive disk. The migration of V1298 Tau b and e leaves in its wake a dynamically excited protoplanetary disk and creates the conditions for the resonant chain breaking by planet-planet scattering., Comment: 19 pages, 11 figures, 5 tables. Since 2019, the direct imaging B-star Exoplanet Abundance Study (BEAST) at SPHERE@VLT has been scanning the surroundings of young B-type stars in order to ascertain the ultimate frontiers of giant planet formation. Recently, the $17^{+3}_{-4}$ Myr HIP 81208 was found to host a close-in (~50 au) brown dwarf and a wider (~230 au) late M star around the central 2.6Msun primary. Alongside the continuation of the survey, we are undertaking a complete reanalysis of archival data aimed at improving detection performances so as to uncover additional low-mass companions. We present here a new reduction of the observations of HIP 81208 using PACO ASDI, a recent and powerful algorithm dedicated to processing high-contrast imaging datasets, as well as more classical algorithms and a dedicated PSF-subtraction approach. The combination of different techniques allowed for a reliable extraction of astrometric and photometric parameters. A previously undetected source was recovered at a short separation from the C component of the system. Proper motion analysis provided robust evidence for the gravitational bond of the object to HIP 81208 C. Orbiting C at a distance of ~20 au, this 15Mjup brown dwarf becomes the fourth object of the hierarchical HIP 81208 system. Among the several BEAST stars which are being found to host substellar companions, HIP 81208 stands out as a particularly striking system. As the first stellar binary system with substellar companions around each component ever found by direct imaging, it yields exquisite opportunities for thorough formation and dynamical follow-up studies., Comment: 12 pages, 9 figures, 5 tables. This paper outlines the centralised design and production of the Ultra-High-Vacuum sidearm and Laser-Stabilisation systems for the AION Ultra-Cold Strontium Laboratories. Commissioning data on the residual gas and steady-state pressures in the sidearm chambers, on magnetic field quality, on laser stabilisation, and on the loading rate for the 3D Magneto-Optical Trap are presented. Streamlining the design and production of the sidearm and laser stabilisation systems enabled the AION Collaboration to build and equip in parallel five state-of-the-art Ultra-Cold Strontium Laboratories within 24 months by leveraging key expertise in the collaboration. This approach could serve as a model for the development and construction of other cold atom experiments, such as atomic clock experiments and neutral atom quantum computing systems, by establishing dedicated design and production units at national laboratories., Comment: 27 pages, 21 figures

We aim at searching for exoplanets on the whole ESO/VLT-SPHERE archive with improved and unsupervised data analysis algorithm that could allow to detect massive giant planets at 5 au. To prepare, test and optimize our approach, we gathered a sample of twenty four solar-type stars observed with SPHERE using angular and spectral differential imaging modes. We use PACO, a new generation algorithm recently developed, that has been shown to outperform classical methods. We also improve the SPHERE pre-reduction pipeline, and optimize the outputs of PACO to enhance the detection performance. We develop custom built spectral prior libraries to optimize the detection capability of the ASDI mode for both IRDIS and IFS. Compared to previous works conducted with more classical algorithms than PACO, the contrast limits we derived are more reliable and significantly better, especially at short angular separations where a gain by a factor ten is obtained between 0.2 and 0.5 arcsec. Under good observing conditions, planets down to 5 MJup, orbiting at 5 au could be detected around stars within 60 parsec. We identified two exoplanet candidates that require follow-up to test for common proper motion. In this work, we demonstrated on a small sample the benefits of PACO in terms of achievable contrast and of control of the confidence levels. Besides, we have developed custom tools to take full benefits of this algorithm and to quantity the total error budget on the estimated astrometry and photometry. This work paves the way towards an end-to-end, homogeneous, and unsupervised massive re-reduction of archival direct imaging surveys in the quest of new exoJupiters., Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A

Birth environments of young stars have strong imprints on the star itself and their surroundings. We present a detailed analysis of the wealthy circumstellar environment around the young Herbig Ae/Be star TCrA. Our aim is to understand the nature of the stellar system and the extended circumstellar structures as seen in scattered light images. We conduct our analysis combining archival data, and new adaptive optics high-contrast and high-resolution images. The scattered light images reveal the presence of a complex environment composed of a bright forward scattering rim of the disk's surface that is seen at very high inclination, a dark lane of the disk midplane, bipolar outflows, and streamer features likely tracing infalling material from the surrounding birth cloud onto the disk. The analysis of the light curve suggests the star is a binary with a period of 29.6yrs. The comparison of the scattered light images with ALMA continuum and 12CO line emission shows the disk is in keplerian rotation, with the northern side of the outflowing material receding, while the southern side approaching the observer. The disk is itself seen edge-on. The direction of the outflows seen in scattered light is in agreement with the direction of the more distant molecular hydrogen emission-line objects (MHOs) associated to the star. Modeling of the SED using a radiative transfer scheme well agrees with the proposed configuration, as well as the hydrodynamical simulation performed using a Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics code. We find evidence of streamers of accreting material around TCrA. These streamers connect the filament along which TCrA is forming with the outer parts of the disk, suggesting that the strong misalignment between the inner and outer disk is due to a change in the direction of the angular momentum of the material accreting on the disk during the late phase of star formation., Comment: 17 pages, 14 figures

[Full abstract in the paper] We aim to better constrain the atmospheric properties of the directly imaged exoplanet 51~Eri~b by using a retrieval approach on higher signal-to-noise data than previously reported. In this context, we also compare the results of using the atmospheric retrieval code \texttt{petitRADTRANS} vs a self-consistent model to fit atmospheric parameters. We present a higher signal-to-noise $YH$ spectrum of the planet and revised $K1K2$ photometry (M$_{K1} = 15.11 \pm 0.04$ mag, M$_{K2} = 17.11 \pm 0.38$ mag). The best-fit parameters obtained using an atmospheric retrieval differ from previous results using self-consistent models. In general, we find that our solutions tend towards cloud-free atmospheres (e.g. log $\tau_{\rm clouds} = -5.20 \pm 1.44$). For our ``nominal'' model with new data, we find a lower metallicity ([Fe/H] $= 0.26\pm$0.30 dex) and C/O ratio ($0.38\pm0.09$), and a slightly higher effective temperature (T$_{\rm{eff}} = 807\pm$45 K) than previous studies. The surface gravity (log $g = 4.05\pm0.37$) is in agreement with the reported values in the literature within uncertainties. We estimate the mass of the planet to be between 2 and 4 M$_{\rm{Jup}}$. When comparing with self-consistent models, we encounter a known correlation between the presence of clouds and the shape of the $P-T$ profiles. We present new optical and near-IR images of debris disk around the F-type star HD 114082. We obtained direct imaging observations and analysed the TESS photometric time series data of this target with a goal to search for planetary companions and to characterise the morphology of the debris disk and the scattering properties of dust particles. HD 114082 was observed with the VLT/SPHERE instrument: the IRDIS camera in the K band together with the IFS in the Y, J and H band using the ADI technique as well as IRDIS in the H band and ZIMPOL in the I_PRIME band using the PDI technique. The scattered light images were fitted with a 3D model for single scattering in an optically thin dust disk. We performed aperture photometry in order to derive the scattering and polarized phase functions, polarization fraction and spectral scattering albedo for the dust particles in the disk. This method was also used to obtain the reflectance spectrum of the disk to retrieve the disk color and study the dust reflectivity in comparison to the debris disk HD 117214. We also performed the modeling of the HD 114082 light curve measured by TESS using the models for planet transit and stellar activity to put constraints on radius of the detected planet and its orbit. The debris disk appears as an axisymmetric debris belt with a radius of ~0.37$"$ (35 au), inclination of ~83$^\circ$ and a wide inner cavity. Dust particles in HD 114082 have a maximum polarization fraction of ~17% and a high reflectivity which results in a spectral scattering albedo of 0.65. The analysis of TESS photometric data reveals a transiting planetary companion to HD 114082 with a radius of $\sim$1~$\rm R_{J}$ on an orbit with a semi-major axis of $0.7 \pm 0.4$ au. Combining different data, we reach deep sensitivity limits in terms of companion masses down to ~5$M_{\rm Jup}$ at 50 au, and ~10 $M_{\rm Jup}$ at 30 au from the central star., Comment: 27 pages

We aim to revisit the system AB Pic which has a known companion at the exoplanet/ brown-dwarf boundary. We based this study on a rich set of observations to investigate the companion's orbit and atmosphere. We composed a spectrum of AB Pic b merging archival VLT/SINFONI K-band data, with published spectra at J and H-band (SINFONI) and Lp-band (Magellan-AO), and photometric measurements (HST and Spitzer). We modeled the spectrum with ForMoSA, based on two atmospheric models: ExoREM and BT-SETTL13. We determined the orbital properties of b fitting the astrometric measurements from NaCo (2003 and 2004) and SPHERE (2015). The orbital solutions favor a semi-major axis of $\sim$190au viewed edge-on. With Exo-REM, we derive a T$_{eff}$ of 1700$\pm$50K and surface gravity of 4.5$\pm$0.3dex, consistent with previous works, and we report for the first time a C/O ratio of 0.58$\pm$0.08 ($\sim$solar). The posteriors are sensitive to the wavelength interval and the family of models used. Given the 2.1hr rotation period and our vsin(i) of $\sim$73km/s, we estimate for the first time the true obliquity to be $\sim$45 or $\sim$135deg, indicating a significant misalignment between the planet's spin and orbit orientations. Finally, a proper motion anomaly between the Hipparcos and Gaia eDR3 compared to our SPHERE detection limits and adapted radial velocity limits indicate the existence of a $\sim$6M$_{Jup}$ inner planet orbiting from 2 to 10au (40-200mas). The possible existence of an inner companion and the likely miss-alignment of the spin axis orientation strongly favor a formation path by gravitational instability or core accretion within a disk closer inside followed by dynamical interactions. Confirmation and characterization of planet c and access to a broader wavelength coverage for planet b will be essential to probe the uncertainties associated with the parameters., Comment: 17 pages, 13 Figures, 6 Tables

Disk winds are an important mechanism for accretion and disk evolution around young stars. The accreting intermediate-mass T-Tauri star RY Tau has an active jet and a previously known disk wind. Archival optical and new near-infrared observations of the RY Tau system show two horn-like components stretching out as a cone from RY Tau. Scattered light from the disk around RY Tau is visible in near-infrared but not seen at optical wavelengths. In the near-infrared, dark wedges that separates the horns from the disk, indicating we may see the scattered light from a disk wind. We use archived ALMA and SPHERE/ZIMPOL I-band observations combined with newly acquired SPEHRE/IRDIS H-band observations and available literature to build a simple geometric model of the RY Tau disk and disk wind. We use Monte Carlo radiative transfer modelling \textit{MCMax3D} to create comparable synthetic observations that test the effect of a dusty wind on the optical effect in the observations. We constrain the grain size and dust mass needed in the disk wind to reproduce the effect from the observations. A model geometrically reminiscent of a dusty disk wind with small micron to sub-micron size grains elevated above the disk can reproduce the optical effect seen in the observations. The mass in the obscuring component of the wind has been constrained to $1\times10^{-9} M_{\odot} \leq M \leq 5\times10^{-8} M_{\odot}$ which corresponds to a lower limit mass loss rate in the wind of about $\sim 1\times10^{-8}M_{\odot}\mathrm{yr}^{-1}$. While an illuminate dust cavity cannot be ruled out without measurements of the gas velocity, we argue that a magnetically launched disk wind is the most likely scenario., Comment: 11 pages, 5 figures

SPHERE+ is a proposed upgrade of the SPHERE instrument at the VLT, which is intended to boost the current performances of detection and characterization for exoplanets and disks. SPHERE+ will also serve as a demonstrator for the future planet finder (PCS) of the European ELT. The main science drivers for SPHERE+ are 1/ to access the bulk of the young giant planet population down to the snow line ($3-10$ au), to bridge the gap with complementary techniques (radial velocity, astrometry); 2/ to observe fainter and redder targets in the youngest ($1-10$\,Myr) associations compared to those observed with SPHERE to directly study the formation of giant planets in their birth environment; 3/ to improve the level of characterization of exoplanetary atmospheres by increasing the spectral resolution in order to break degeneracies in giant planet atmosphere models. Achieving these objectives requires to increase the bandwidth of the xAO system (from $\sim$1 to 3\,kHz) as well as the sensitivity in the infrared (2 to 3\,mag). These features will be brought by a second stage AO system optimized in the infrared with a pyramid wavefront sensor. As a new science instrument, a medium resolution integral field spectrograph will provide a spectral resolution from 1000 to 5000 in the J and H bands. HR\,8799 is a young planetary system composed of 4 planets and a double debris belt. Being the first multi-planetary system discovered with the direct imaging technique, it has been observed extensively since 1998. This wide baseline of astrometric measurements, counting over 50 observations in 20 years, permits a detailed orbital and dynamical analysis of the system. To explore the orbital parameters of the planets, their dynamical history, and the planet-to-disk interaction, we made follow-up observations of the system during the VLT/SPHERE GTO program. We obtained 21 observations, most of them in favorable conditions. In addition, we observed HR\,8799 with the instrument LBT/LUCI. All the observations were reduced with state-of-the-art algorithms implemented to apply the spectral and angular differential imaging method. We re-reduced the SPHERE data obtained during the commissioning of the instrument and in 3 open-time programs to have homogeneous astrometry. The precise position of the 4 planets with respect to the host star was calculated by exploiting the fake negative companions method. To improve the orbital fitting, we also took into account all of the astrometric data available in the literature. From the photometric measurements obtained in different wavelengths, we estimated the planets' masses following the evolutionary models. We obtained updated parameters for the orbits with the assumption of coplanarity, relatively small eccentricities, and periods very close to the 2:1 resonance. We also refined the dynamical mass of each planet and the parallax of the system (24.49 $\pm$ 0.07 mas). We also conducted detailed $N$-body simulations indicating possible positions of a~putative fifth innermost planet with a mass below the present detection limits of $\simeq 3$~\MJup., Comment: 27 pages, 15 figures, A&A in press

Aims. This work aims at constraining the masses and separations of potential substellar companions to five accelerating stars (HIP 1481, HIP 88399, HIP 96334, HIP 30314 and HIP 116063) using multiple data sets acquired with different techniques. Methods. Our targets were originally observed as part of the SPHERE/SHINE survey, and radial velocity (RV) archive data were also available for four of the five objects. No companions were originally detected in any of these data sets, but the presence of significant proper motion anomalies (PMa) for all the stars strongly suggested the presence of a companion. Combining the information from the PMa with the limits derived from the RV and SPHERE data, we were able to put constraints on the characteristics of the unseen companions. Results. Our analysis led to relatively strong constraints for both HIP 1481 and HIP 88399, narrowing down the companion masses to 2-5 M_Jup and 3-5 M_Jup and separations within 2-15 au and 3-9 au, respectively. Because of the large age uncertainties for HIP 96334, the poor observing conditions for the SPHERE epochs of HIP 30314 and the lack of RV data for HIP 116063, the results for these targets were not as well defined, but we were still able to constrain the properties of the putative companions within a reasonable confidence level. Conclusions. For all five targets, our analysis has revealed that the companions responsible for the PMa signal would be well within reach for future instruments planned for the ELT (e.g., MICADO), which would easily achieve the required contrast and angular resolution. Context. HD 95086 is a young nearby Solar System analog hosting a giant exoplanet orbiting at 57 au from the star between an inner and outer debris belt. The existence of additional planets has been suggested as the mechanism that maintains the broad cavity between the two belts. Aims. We present a dedicated monitoring of HD 95086 with the VLT/SPHERE instrument to refine the orbital and atmospheric properties of HD 95086 b, and to search for additional planets in this system. Methods. SPHERE observations, spread over ten epochs from 2015 to 2019 and including five new datasets, were used. Combined with archival observations, from VLT/NaCo (2012-2013) and Gemini/GPI (2013-2016), the extended set of astrometric measurements allowed us to refine the orbital properties of HD 95086 b. We also investigated the spectral properties and the presence of a circumplanetary disk around HD 95086 b by using the special fitting tool exploring the diversity of several atmospheric models. In addition, we improved our detection limits in order to search for a putative planet c via the K-Stacker algorithm. Results. We extracted for the first time the JH low-resolution spectrum of HD 95086 b by stacking the six best epochs, and confirm its very red spectral energy distribution. Combined with additional datasets from GPI and NaCo, our analysis indicates that this very red color can be explained by the presence of a circumplanetary disk around planet b, with a range of high-temperature solutions (1400-1600 K) and significant extinction (Av > 10 mag), or by a super-solar metallicity atmosphere with lower temperatures (800-1300 K), and small to medium amount of extinction (Av < 10 mag). Virtually all known exoplanets reside around stars with $M<2.3~M_\odot$; to clarify if the dearth of planets around more massive stars is real, we launched the direct-imaging B-star Exoplanet Abundance STudy (BEAST) survey targeting B stars ($M>2.4~M_\odot$) in the young (5-20 Myr) Scorpius-Centaurus association (Sco-Cen). Here we present the case of a massive ($M \sim 9~M_\odot$) BEAST target, $\mu^2$ Sco. Based on kinematic information, we found that $\mu^2$ Sco is a member of a small group which we label Eastern Lower Scorpius, refining in turn the precision on stellar parameters. Around this star we identified a robustly detected substellar companion ($14.4\pm 0.8 M_J$) at a projected separation of $290\pm 10$ au, and a probable second object ($18.5\pm 1.5 M_J$) at $21\pm 1$ au. The planet-to-star mass ratios of these objects are similar to that of Jupiter to the Sun, and their irradiation is similar to those of Jupiter and Mercury, respectively. The two companions of $\mu^2$ Sco are naturally added to the giant planet b Cen b recently discovered by BEAST; although slightly more massive than the deuterium burning limit, their properties resemble those of giant planets around less massive stars and they are better reproduced by a formation under a planet-like, rather than a star-like scenario. Irrespective of the (needed) confirmation of the inner companion, $\mu^2$ Sco is the first star that would end its life as a supernova that hosts such a system. The tentative high frequency of BEAST discoveries shows that giant planets or small-mass brown dwarfs can form around B stars. When putting this finding in the context of core accretion and gravitational instability, we conclude that the current modeling of both mechanisms is not able to produce this kind of companion. To understand how the multitude of planetary systems that have been discovered come to be, we need to study systems at different evolutionary stages, with different central stars but also in different environments. The most challenging environment for planet formation may be the harsh UV radiation field of nearby massive stars which quickly erodes disks by external photo-evaporation. We have observed the AT Pyx system, located in the head of a cometary globule in the Gum Nebula, to search for signs of ongoing planet formation. We used the extreme adaptive optics imager VLT/SPHERE to observe AT Pyx in polarized light as well as total intensity in the J, H and K-band. Additionally we employed VLT/NACO to observe the system in the L-band. We resolve the disk around AT Pyx in scattered light across multiple wavelengths. We find an extended (>126 au) disk, with an intermediate inclination between 35 deg and 42 deg. The disk shows complex sub-structure and we identify 2 and possibly 3 spiral-like features. Depending on the precise geometry of the disk (which we can not unambiguously infer from our data) the disk may be eccentric with an eccentricity of ~0.16 or partially self-shadowed. The spiral features and possible eccentricity are both consistent with signatures of an embedded gas giant planet equal in mass to Jupiter. Our own observations can rule out brown dwarf companions embedded in the resolved disk, but are not sensitive enough to detect gas giants. AT Pyx is the first disk in a cometray globule in the Gum Nebula which is spatially resolved. By comparison with disks in the Orion Nebula Cluster we note that the extension of the disk may be exceptional for this environment if the external UV radiation field is comparable to other cometary globules in the region. Context. Protoplanetary disks around young stars often contain substructures like rings, gaps, and spirals that could be caused by interactions between the disk and forming planets. Aims. We aim to study the young (1-3 Myr) star DR Tau in the near-infrared and characterize its disk, which was previously resolved through sub-millimeter interferometry with ALMA, and to search for possible sub-stellar companions embedded into it. Methods. We observed DR Tau with VLT/SPHERE both in polarized light (H broad band) and total intensity (in Y, J, H, and K spectral bands). We also performed L' band observations with LBTI/LMIRCam on the Large Binocular Telescope (LBT). Results. We found two previously undetected spirals extending north-east and south of the star, respectively. We further detected an arc-like structure north of the star. Finally a bright, compact and elongated structure was detected at separation of 303 +/- 10 mas and position angle 21.2 +/- 3.7 degrees, just at the root of the north-east spiral arm. Since this feature is visible both in polarized light and in total intensity and has a flat spectrum it is likely caused by stellar light scattered by dust. Conclusions. The two spiral arms are at different separation from the star, have very different pitch angles, and are separated by an apparent discontinuity, suggesting they might have a different origin. The very open southern spiral arm might be caused by infalling material from late encounters with cloudlets into the formation environment of the star itself. The compact feature could be caused by interaction with a planet in formation still embedded in its dust envelope and it could be responsible for launching the north-east spiral. Neptune's incomplete ring arcs have been stable since their discovery in 1984 by stellar occultation. Although these structures should be destroyed within a few months through differential Keplerian motion, imaging data over the past couple of decades has shown that these structures are persistent. We present here the first SPHERE near-infrared observations of Neptune's ring arcs taken at 2.2 $\mu$m (BB-Ks) with the IRDIS camera at the Very Large Telescope in August 2016. The images were aligned using the ephemerides of the satellite Proteus and were suitably co-added to enhance ring and satellite signals. We analyse high-angular resolution near-infrared images of Neptune's ring arcs obtained in 2016 at the ESO VLT-UT3 with the adaptive-optics fed camera SPHERE-IRDIS. We derive here accurate mean motion values for the arcs and the nearby satellite Galatea. The trailing arcs Fraternit\'e and Egalit\'e are stable since they were last observed in 2007. Furthermore, we confirm the fading away of the leading arcs Courage and Libert\'e. Finally, we confirm the mismatch between the arcs' position and 42:43 inclined and eccentric corotation resonances with Galatea; thus demonstrating that no 42:43 corotation model works to explain the azimuthal confinement of the arcs' materiel., Comment: 7 pages, 3 figure two of which have 2 subfigures

Measuring the orbits of directly-imaged exoplanets requires precise astrometry at the milliarcsec level over long periods of time due to their wide separation to the stars ($\gtrsim$10 au) and long orbital period ($\gtrsim$20 yr). To reach this challenging goal, a specific strategy was implemented for the instrument Spectro-Polarimetric High-contrast Exoplanet REsearch (SPHERE), the first dedicated exoplanet imaging instrument at the Very Large Telescope of the European Southern Observatory (ESO). A key part of this strategy relies on the astrometric stability of the instrument over time. We monitored for five years the evolution of the optical distortion, pixel scale, and orientation to the True North of SPHERE images using the near-infrared instrument IRDIS. We show that the instrument calibration achieves a positional stability of $\sim$1 mas over 2$"$ field of views. [Full abstract in the paper] In recent years, protoplanetary disks with spiral structures have been detected in scattered light, millimeter continuum, and CO gas emission. The mechanisms causing these structures are still under debate. A popular scenario to drive the spiral arms is the one of a planet perturbing the material in the disk. However, if the disk is massive, gravitational instability is usually the favored explanation. Multiwavelength studies could be helpful to distinguish between the two scenarios. So far, only a handful of disks with spiral arms have been observed in both scattered light and millimeter continuum. We aim to perform an in-depth characterization of the protoplanetary disk morphology around WaOph 6 analyzing data obtained at different wavelengths, as well as to investigate the origin of the spiral features in the disk. We present the first near-infrared polarimetric observations of WaOph 6 obtained with SPHERE at the VLT and compare them to archival millimeter continuum ALMA observations. We traced the spiral features in both data sets and estimated the respective pitch angles. We discuss the different scenarios that can give rise to the spiral arms in WaOph 6. Context. Spiral arms in protoplanetary disks could be shown to be the manifestation of density waves launched by protoplanets and propagating in the gaseous component of the disk. At least two point sources have been identified in the L band in the MWC 758 system as planetary mass object candidates. Aims. We used VLT/SPHERE to search for counterparts of these candidates in the H and K bands, and to characterize the morphology of the spiral arms . Methods. The data were processed with now-standard techniques in high-contrast imaging to determine the limits of detection, and to compare them to the luminosity derived from L band observations. Results. In considering the evolutionary, atmospheric, and opacity models we were not able to confirm the two former detections of point sources performed in the L band. In addition, the analysis of the spiral arms from a dynamical point of view does not support the hypothesis that these candidates comprise the origin of the spirals. Conclusions. Context. Debris disks have commonly been studied around intermediate-mass stars. Their intense radiation fields are believed to efficiently remove the small dust grains that are constantly replenished by collisions. For lower-mass stars, in particular M-stars, the dust removal mechanism needs to be further investigated given the much weaker radiation field produced by these objects. Aims. We present new polarimetric observations of the nearly edge-on disk around the pre-main sequence M-type star GSC 07396-00759, taken with VLT/SPHERE IRDIS, with the aim to better understand the morphology of the disk, its dust properties, and the star-disk interaction via the stellar mass-loss rate. Methods. We model our observations to characterize the location and properties of the dust grains using the Henyey-Greenstein approximation of the polarized phase function and evaluate the strength of the stellar winds. Results. We find that the observations are best described by an extended and highly inclined disk ($i\approx 84.3\,^{\circ}\pm0.3$) with a dust distribution centered at a radius $r_{0}\approx107\pm2$ au. The polarized phase function $S_{12}$ is best reproduced by an anisotropic scattering factor $g\approx0.6$ and small micron-sized dust grains with sizes $s>0.3\,\mathrm{\mu}$m. We furthermore discuss some of the caveats of the approach and a degeneracy between the grain size and the porosity. Conclusions. Even though the radius of the disk may be over-estimated, our results suggest that using a given scattering theory might not be sufficient to fully explain key aspects such as the shape of the phase function, or the dust grain size. With the caveats in mind, we find that the average mass-loss rate of GSC 07396-00759 can be up to 500 times stronger than that of the Sun, supporting the idea that stellar winds from low-mass stars can evacuate small dust grains from the disk., Comment: 22 pages, 17 figures, 4 tables

We compared high-contrast near-infrared images of the core of R136 taken by VLT/SPHERE, in two epochs separated by 3.06 years. For the first time we monitored the dynamics of the detected sources in the core of R136 from a ground-based telescope with adaptive optics. The aim of these observations was to search for High prOper Motion cAndidates (HOMAs) in the central region of R136 (r<6") where it has been challenging for other instruments. Two bright sources (K<15mag and V<16mag) are located near R136a1 and R136c (massive WR stars) and have been identified as potential HOMAs. These sources have significantly shifted in the images with respect to the mean shift of all reliable detected sources and their neighbours, and six times their own astrometric errors. We calculate their proper motions to be 1.36\pm0.22 mas/yr (321\pm52 km/s) and 1.15\pm0.11 mas/yr (273\pm26 km/s). We present the multiple stellar systems observed within the SpHere INfrared survey for Exoplanet (SHINE). SHINE searched for substellar companions to young stars using high contrast imaging. Although stars with known stellar companions within SPHERE field of view (<5.5 arcsec) were removed from the original target list, we detected additional stellar companions to 78 of the 463 SHINE targets observed so far. 27% of the systems have three or more components. Given the heterogeneity of the sample in terms of observing conditions and strategy, tailored routines were used for data reduction and analysis, some of which were specifically designed for these data sets. We then combined SPHERE data with literature and archival ones, TESS light curves and Gaia parallaxes and proper motions, to characterise these systems as completely as possible. Combining all data, we were able to constrain the orbits of 25 systems. We carefully assessed the completeness of our sample for the separation range 50-500 mas (period range a few years - a few tens of years), taking into account the initial selection biases and recovering part of the systems excluded from the original list due to their multiplicity. This allowed us to compare the binary frequency for our sample with previous studies and highlight some interesting trends in the mass ratio and period distribution. We also found that, for the few objects for which such estimate was possible, the values of the masses derived from dynamical arguments were in good agreement with the model predictions. Stellar and orbital spins appear fairly well aligned for the 12 stars having enough data, which favour a disk fragmentation origin. Our results highlight the importance of combining different techniques when tackling complex problems such as the formation of binaries and show how large samples can be useful for more than one purpose., Comment: 59 pages, 11 tables, 18 figures

Orbital monitoring of exoplanetary and stellar systems is fundamental for analysing their architecture, dynamical stability and evolution, and mechanisms of formation. Current high-contrast extreme-adaptive optics imagers like SPHERE, GPI, and SCExAO+CHARIS explore the population of giant exoplanets and brown dwarf and stellar companions beyond typically 10 au, covering generally a small fraction of the orbit (<20%) leading to degeneracies and biases in the orbital parameters. Precise and robust measurements over time of the position of the companions are critical, which require good knowledge of the instrumental limitations and dedicated observing strategies. The homogeneous dedicated calibration strategy for astrometry implemented for SPHERE has facilitated high-precision studies by its users since its start of operation in 2014. As the precision of exoplanet imaging instruments is now reaching milliarcseconds and is expected to improve with the upcoming facilities, we initiated a community effort, triggered by the SPHERE experience, to share lessons learned for high-precision astrometry in direct imaging. A homogeneous strategy would strongly benefit the VLT community, in synergy with VLTI instruments like GRAVITY/GRAVITY+, future instruments like ERIS and MAVIS, and in preparation for the exploitation of the ELT's first instruments MICADO, HARMONI, and METIS., Comment: In press for the ESO Messenger. 10 pages, 5 figures, 1 table

The evanescent wave coronagraph uses the principle of frustrated total internal reflection (FTIR) to suppress the light coming from the star and study its close environment. Its focal plane mask is composed of a lens and a prism placed in contact with each other to produce the coronagraphic effect. In this paper, we present the experimental results obtained using an upgraded focal plane mask of the Evanescent Wave Coronagraph (EvWaCo). These experimental results are also compared to the theoretical performance of the coronagraph obtained through simulations. Experimentally, we reach a raw contrast equal to a few $10^{-4}$ at a distance equal to 3 ${\lambda}/D$ over the full I-band (${\lambda}_c =$ $800$ $nm$, ${\Delta}{\lambda}/{\lambda} \approx 20\%$) and equal to 4 ${\lambda}/D$ over the full R-band (${\lambda}_c =$ $650$ $nm$, ${\Delta}{\lambda}/{\lambda} \approx 23\%$) in unpolarized light. However, our simulations show a raw contrast close to $10^{-4}$ over the full I-band and R-band at the same distance, thus, confirming the theoretical achromatic advantage of the coronagraph. We also verify the stability of the mask through a series of contrast measurements over a period of 8 months. We present high-precision photometry and polarimetry for the protoplanetary disk around HD142527, with a focus on determining the light scattering parameters of the dust. We re-reduced polarimetric differential imaging data of HD142527 in the VBB (735 nm) and H-band (1625 nm) from the ZIMPOL and IRDIS subinstruments of SPHERE/VLT. With polarimetry and photometry based on reference star differential imaging, we were able to measure the linearly polarized intensity and the total intensity of the light scattered by the circumstellar disk with high precision. We used simple Monte Carlo simulations of multiple light scattering by the disk surface to derive constraints for three scattering parameters of the dust: the maximum polarization of $P_{\rm max}$, the asymmetry parameter $g$, and the single-scattering albedo $\omega$. We measure a reflected total intensity of $51.4\pm1.5$ mJy and $206\pm12$ mJy and a polarized intensity of $11.3\pm0.3$ mJy and $55.1\pm3.3$ mJy in the VBB and H-band, respectively. We also find in the visual range a degree of polarization that varies between $28\%$ on the far side of the disk and $17\%$ on the near side. The disk shows a red color for the scattered light intensity and the polarized intensity, which are about twice as high in the near-infrared when compared to the visual. We determine with model calculations the scattering properties of the dust particles and find evidence for strong forward scattering ($g\approx 0.5-0.75$), relatively low single-scattering albedo ($\omega \approx 0.2-0.5$), and high maximum polarization ($P_{\rm max} \approx 0.5-0.75$) at the surface on the far side of the disk for both observed wavelengths. The optical parameters indicate the presence of large aggregate dust particles, which are necessary to explain the high maximum polarization, the strong forward-scattering nature of the dust, and the observed red disk color., Comment: 20 pages, 14 figures

The detection of a wide range of substructures such as rings, cavities and spirals has become a common outcome of high spatial resolution imaging of protoplanetary disks, both in the near-infrared scattered light and in the thermal millimetre continuum emission. The most frequent interpretation of their origin is the presence of planetary-mass companions perturbing the gas and dust distribution in the disk (perturbers), but so far the only bona-fide detection has been the two giant planets around PDS 70. Here, we collect a sample of 15 protoplanetary disks showing substructures in SPHERE scattered light images and present a homogeneous derivation of planet detection limits in these systems. We also estimate the mass of these perturbers through a Hill radius prescription and a comparison to ALMA data. Assuming that one single planet carves each substructure in scattered light, we find that more massive perturbers are needed to create gaps within cavities than rings, and that we might be close to a detection in the cavities of RX J1604, RX J1615, Sz Cha, HD 135344B and HD 34282. We reach typical mass limits in these cavities of 3-10 Mjup. For planets in the gaps between rings, we find that the detection limits of SPHERE are about an order of magnitude away in mass, and that the gaps of PDS 66 and HD 97048 seem to be the most promising structures for planet searches. The proposed presence of massive planets causing spiral features in HD 135344B and HD 36112 are also within SPHERE's reach assuming hot-start models.These results suggest that current detection limits are able to detect hot-start planets in cavities, under the assumption that they are formed by a single perturber located at the centre of the cavity. More realistic planet mass constraints would help to clarify whether this is actually the case, which might point to perturbers not being the only way of creating substructures., Comment: 26 pages, 33 figures, accepted for publication in A&A

Large surveys with new-generation high-contrast imaging instruments are needed to derive the frequency and properties of exoplanet populations with separations from $\sim$5 to 300 AU. A careful assessment of the stellar properties is crucial for a proper understanding of when, where, and how frequently planets form, and how they evolve. The sensitivity of detection limits to stellar age makes this a key parameter for direct imaging surveys. We describe the SpHere INfrared survey for Exoplanets (SHINE), the largest direct imaging planet-search campaign initiated at the VLT in 2015 in the context of the SPHERE Guaranteed Time Observations of the SPHERE consortium. In this first paper we present the selection and the properties of the complete sample of stars surveyed with SHINE, focusing on the targets observed during the first phase of the survey (from February 2015 to February 2017). This early sample composed of 150 stars is used to perform a preliminary statistical analysis of the SHINE data, deferred to two companion papers presenting the survey performance, main discoveries, and the preliminary statistical constraints set by SHINE. Based on a large database collecting the stellar properties of all young nearby stars in the solar vicinity (including kinematics, membership to moving groups, isochrones, lithium abundance, rotation, and activity), we selected the original sample of 800 stars that were ranked in order of priority according to their sensitivity for planet detection in direct imaging with SPHERE. The properties of the stars that are part of the early statistical sample were revisited, including for instance measurements from the GAIA Data Release 2.

Over the past decades, direct imaging has confirmed the existence of substellar companions (exoplanets or brown dwarfs) on wide orbits (>10 au) from their host stars. To understand their formation and evolution mechanisms, we have initiated in 2015 the SPHERE infrared survey for exoplanets (SHINE), a systematic direct imaging survey of young, nearby stars to explore their demographics.} {We aim to detect and characterize the population of giant planets and brown dwarfs beyond the snow line around young, nearby stars. Combined with the survey completeness, our observations offer the opportunity to constrain the statistical properties (occurrence, mass and orbital distributions, dependency on the stellar mass) of these young giant planets.} {In this study, we present the observing and data analysis strategy, the ranking process of the detected candidates, and the survey performances for a subsample of 150 stars, which are representative of the full SHINE sample. The observations were conducted in an homogeneous way from February 2015 to February 2017 with the dedicated ground-based VLT/SPHERE instrument equipped with the IFS integral field spectrograph and the IRDIS dual-band imager covering a spectral range between 0.9 and 2.3 $\mu$m. We used coronographic, angular and spectral differential imaging techniques to reach the best detection performances for this study down to the planetary mass regime.}

Recent observations of resolved cold debris disks at tens of au have revealed that gaps could be a common feature in these Kuiper belt analogues. Such gaps could be evidence for the presence of planets within the gaps or closer-in near the edges of the disk. We present SPHERE observations of HD 92945 and HD 107146, two systems with detected gaps. We constrained the mass of possible companions responsible for the gap to 1-2 M Jup for planets located inside the gap and to less than 5 M Jup for separations down to 20 au from the host star. These limits allow us to exclude some of the possible configurations of the planetary systems proposed to explain the shape of the disks around these two stars. In order to put tighter limits on the mass at very short separations from the star, where direct imaging data are less effective, we also combined our data with astrometric measurements from Hipparcos and Gaia and radial velocity measurements. We were able to limit the separation and the mass of the companion potentially responsible for the proper motion anomaly of HD 107146 to values of 2-7 au and 2-5 M Jup , respectively., Comment: 17 pages, 14 Figures, accepted for publication on MNRAS

Young giant planets and brown dwarf companions emit near-infrared radiation that can be linearly polarized up to several percent. This polarization can reveal the presence of a circumsubstellar accretion disk, rotation-induced oblateness of the atmosphere, or an inhomogeneous distribution of atmospheric dust clouds. We measured the near-infrared linear polarization of 20 known directly imaged exoplanets and brown dwarf companions with the high-contrast imager SPHERE-IRDIS at the VLT. We reduced the data using the IRDAP pipeline to correct for the instrumental polarization and crosstalk with an absolute polarimetric accuracy <0.1% in the degree of polarization. We report the first detection of polarization originating from substellar companions, with a polarization of several tenths of a percent for DH Tau B and GSC 6214-210 B in H-band. By comparing the measured polarization with that of nearby stars, we find that the polarization is unlikely to be caused by interstellar dust. Because the companions have previously measured hydrogen emission lines and red colors, the polarization most likely originates from circumsubstellar disks. Through radiative transfer modeling, we constrain the position angles of the disks and find that the disks must have high inclinations. The presence of these disks as well as the misalignment of the disk of DH Tau B with the disk around its primary star suggest in situ formation of the companions. For the 18 other companions, we do not detect significant polarization and place subpercent upper limits on their degree of polarization. These non-detections may indicate the absence of circumsubstellar disks, a slow rotation rate of young companions, the upper atmospheres containing primarily submicron-sized dust grains, and/or limited cloud inhomogeneity. Large scale atom interferometers promise unrivaled strain sensitivity to midband (0.1 - 10 Hz) gravitational waves, and will probe a new parameter space in the search for ultra-light scalar dark matter. These atom interferometers require a momentum separation above 10^4 \hbar k between interferometer arms in order to reach the target sensitivity. Prohibitively high optical intensity and wavefront flatness requirements have thus far limited the maximum achievable momentum splitting. We propose a scheme for optical cavity enhanced atom interferometry, using circulating, spatially resolved pulses, and intracavity frequency modulation to overcome these limitations and reach 10^4 \hbar k momentum separation. We present parameters suitable for the experimental realization of 10^4 \hbar k splitting in a 1 km interferometer using the 698 nm clock transition in 87Sr, and describe performance enhancements in 10 m scale devices operating on the 689 nm intercombination line in 87Sr. Although technically challenging to implement, the laser and cloud requirements are within the reach of upcoming cold-atom based interferometers. Sirius-like systems are wide binaries composed of a white dwarf (WD) and a companion of a spectral type earlier than M0. The WD progenitor evolves in isolation, but its wind during the AGB phase pollutes the companion surface and transfers some angular momentum. Within SHINE survey that uses SPHERE at the VLT, we acquired images of HD2133, HD114174, and CD-567708 and combined this data with high resolution spectra of the primaries, TESS, and literature data. We performed accurate abundance analyses for the MS. We found brighter J and K magnitudes for HD114174B than obtained previously and extended the photometry down to 0.95 micron. Our new data indicate a higher temperature and then shorter cooling age (5.57+/-0.02 Gyr) and larger mass (0.75+/-0.03 Mo) for this WD than previously assumed. This solved the discrepancy previously found with the age of the MS star. The two other WDs are less massive, indicating progenitors of ~1.3 Mo and 1.5-1.8 Mo for HD2133B and CD-56 7708B, respectively. We were able to derive constraints on the orbit for HD114174 and CD-56 7708. The composition of the MS stars agrees fairly well with expectations from pollution by the AGB progenitors of the WDs: HD2133A has a small enrichment of n-capture elements, which is as expected for pollution by an AGB star with a mass <1.5 Mo; CD-56 7708A is a previously unrecognized mild Ba-star, which is expected due to pollution by an AGB star with a mass in the range of 1.5-3.0 Mo; and HD114174 has a very moderate excess of n-capture elements, which is in agreement with the expectation for a massive AGB star to have a mass >3.0 Mo. On the other hand, none of these stars show the excesses of C that are expected to go along with those of n-capture elements. T Tauri remains an enigmatic triple star for which neither the evolutionary state of the stars themselves, nor the geometry of the complex outflow system is completely understood. Eight-meter class telescopes equipped with state-of-the-art adaptive optics provide the spatial resolution necessary to trace tangential motion of features over a timescale of a few years, and they help to associate them with the different outflows. We used J-, H-, and K-band high-contrast coronagraphic imaging with VLT-SPHERE recorded between 2016 and 2018 to map reflection nebulosities and obtain high precision near-infrared (NIR) photometry of the triple star. We also present molecular hydrogen emission maps of the 1-0 S(1) line at 2.122 micron obtained with LBT-LUCI during its commissioning period at the end of 2016. The data reveal a number of new features in the system, some of which are seen in reflected light and some are seen in H2 emission; furthermore, they can all be associated with the main outflows. The tangential motion of the features provides compelling evidence that T Tauri Sb drives the southeast-northwest outflow. T Tauri Sb has recently faded probably because of increased extinction as it passes through the southern circumbinary disk. While T Tauri Sb is approaching periastron, T Tauri Sa instead has brightened and is detected in all our J-band imagery for the first time., Comment: 10 pages, 9 figures, accepted for publication in A&A

In recent decades, thousands of substellar companions have been discovered with both indirect and direct methods of detection. In this paper, we focus our attention on substellar companions detected with the direct imaging technique, with the primary goal of investigating their close surroundings and looking for additional companions and satellites, as well as disks and rings. Any such discovery would shed light on many unresolved questions, particularly with regard to their possible formation mechanisms. To reveal bound features of directly imaged companions we need to suppress the contribution from the source itself. Therefore, we developed a method based on the negative fake companion (NEGFC) technique that first estimates the position in the field of view (FoV) and the flux of the imaged companion, then subtracts a rescaled model point spread function (PSF) from the imaged companion. Next it performs techniques, such as angular differential imaging (ADI), to further remove quasi-static patterns of the star. We applied the method to the sample of substellar objects observed with SPHERE during the SHINE GTO survey. Among the 27 planets and brown dwarfs we analyzed, we detected a possible point source close to DH Tau B. This candidate companion was detected in four different SPHERE observations, with an estimated mass of $\sim 1$ M\textsubscript{Jup}, and a mass ratio with respect to the brown dwarf of $1/10$. This binary system, if confirmed, would be the first of its kind, opening up interesting questions for the formation mechanism, evolution, and frequency of such pairs. In order to address the latter, the residuals and contrasts reached for 25 companions in the sample of substellar objects observed with SPHERE were derived. If the DH Tau Bb companion is real, the binary fraction obtained is $\sim 7\%$, which is in good agreement with the results obtained for field brown dwarfs., Comment: 19 pages, 17 figures

The SHINE project is a 500-star survey performed with SPHERE on the VLT for the purpose of directly detecting new substellar companions and understanding their formation and early evolution. Here we present an initial statistical analysis for a subsample of 150 stars that are representative of the full SHINE sample. Our goal is to constrain the frequency of substellar companions with masses between 1 and 75 MJup and semimajor axes between 5 and 300 au. We adopt detection limits as a function of angular separation from the survey data for all stars converted into mass and projected orbital separation using the BEX-COND-hot evolutionary tracks and known distance to each system. Based on the results obtained for each star and on the 13 detections in the sample, we use a MCMC tool to compare our observations to two different types of models. The first is a parametric model based on observational constraints, and the second type are numerical models that combine advanced core accretion and gravitational instability planet population synthesis. Using the parametric model, we show that the frequencies of systems with at least one substellar companion are $23.0_{-9.7}^{+13.5}\%$, $5.8_{-2.8}^{+4.7}\%$, and $12.6_{-7.1}^{+12.9}\%$ for BA, FGK, and M stars, respectively. We also demonstrate that a planet-like formation pathway probably dominates the mass range from 1-75 MJup for companions around BA stars, while for M dwarfs, brown dwarf binaries dominate detections. In contrast, a combination of binary star-like and planet-like formation is required to best fit the observations for FGK stars. Using our population model and restricting our sample to FGK stars, we derive a frequency of $5.7_{-2.8}^{+3.8}\%$, consistent with predictions from the parametric model. To understand the formation of planetary systems, one needs to understand the initial conditions of planet formation, i.e. the young gas-rich planet forming disks. Spatially resolved high-contrast observations are of particular interest, since substructures in disks, linked to planet formation, can be detected and close companions or even planets in formation embedded in the disk can be revealed. In this study we present the first result of the DESTINYS survey (Disk Evolution Study Through Imaging of Nearby Young Stars). DESTINYS is an ESO/SPHERE large program that aims at studying disk evolution in scattered light, mainly focusing on a sample of low-mass stars (<1$M_\odot$) in nearby (~200 pc) star-forming regions. In this particular study we present the observations of the ET Cha (RECX 15) system, a nearby 'old' classical T Tauri star (5-8 Myr, ~100 pc), which is still strongly accreting. We use SPHERE/IRDIS in H-band polarimetric imaging mode to obtain high contrast images of the ET Cha system to search for scattered light from the circumstellar disk as well as thermal emission from close companions. We additionally employ VLT/NACO total intensity archival data taken in 2003. We report here the discovery of a low-mass (sub)stellar companion with SPHERE/IRDIS to ET Cha. We are estimating the mass of this new companion based on photometry. Depending on the system age it is a 5 Myr, 50 $M_{Jup}$ brown dwarf or an 8 Myr, 0.10 $M_\odot$ M-type pre-main-sequence star. We explore possible orbital solutions and discuss the recent dynamic history of the system. Independent of the precise companion mass we find that the presence of the companion likely explains the small size of the disk around ET Cha. The small separation of the binary pair indicates that the disk around the primary component is likely clearing from the outside in, explaining the high accretion rate of the system., Comment: 14 pages, 9 figures, accepted for publication in A&A on 09-07-2020

We present observations of the young multiple system UX Tauri to look for circumstellar disks and for signs of dynamical interactions. We obtained SPHERE/IRDIS deep differential polarization images in the J and H bands. We also used ALMA archival CO data. Large extended spirals are well detected in scattered light coming out of the disk of UX Tau A. The southern spiral forms a bridge between UX Tau A and C. These spirals, including the bridge connecting the two stars, all have a CO (3-2) counterpart seen by ALMA. The disk of UX Tau C is detected in scattered light. It is much smaller than the disk of UX Tau A and has a major axis along a different position angle, suggesting a misalignment. We performed PHANTOM SPH hydrodynamical models to interpret the data. The scattered light spirals, CO emission spirals and velocity patterns of the rotating disks, and the compactness of the disk of UX Tau C all point to a scenario in which UX Tau A has been perturbed very recently (about 1000 years) by the close passage of UX Tau C., Comment: Accepted for publication in Astronomy & Astrophysics Letters. Context. Detecting and characterizing substellar companions for which the luminosity, mass, and age can be determined independently is of utter importance to test and calibrate the evolutionary models due to uncertainties in their formation mechanisms. HD 19467 is a bright and nearby star hosting a cool brown dwarf companion detected with RV and imaging, making it a valuable object for such studies. Aims. We aim to further characterize the orbital, spectral, and physical properties of the HD 19467 system. Methods. We present new high-contrast imaging data with the SPHERE and NaCo instruments. We also analyze archival data from HARPS, NaCo, HIRES, UVES, and ASAS. We also use proper motion data of the star from Hipparcos and Gaia. Results. We refine the properties of the host star and derive an age of 8.0$^{+2.0}_{-1.0}$ Gyr based on isochrones, gyrochronology, and chemical and kinematic arguments. This estimate is slightly younger than previous estimates of ~9-11 Gyr. No orbital curvature is seen in the current imaging, RV, and astrometric data. From a joint fit of the data, we refine the orbital parameters for HD 19467B: period 398$^{+95}_{-93}$ yr, inclination 129.8$^{+8.1}_{-5.1}$ deg, eccentricity 0.56$\pm$0.09, longitude of the ascending node 134.8$\pm$4.5 deg, and argument of the periastron 64.2$^{+5.5}_{-6.3}$ deg. We assess a dynamical mass of 74$^{+12}_{-9}$ MJ. The fit with atmospheric models of the spectrophotometric data of HD 19467B indicates an atmosphere without clouds or with very thin clouds, an effective temperature of 1042$^{+77}_{-71}$ K, and a large surface gravity of 5.34$^{+0.08}_{-0.09}$ dex. The comparison to model predictions of the bolometric luminosity and dynamical mass of HD 19467B, assuming our system age estimate, indicates a better agreement with the Burrows et al. models; whereas the other evolutionary models used tend to underestimate its cooling rate., Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A, 25 pages, 23 figures, 9 tables. A large fraction of stars is found to be part of binary or higher-order multiple systems. The ubiquity of planets found around single stars raises the question if and how planets in binary systems may form. Protoplanetary disks are the birthplaces of planets, and their characterization is crucial in order to understand the planet formation process. Our aim is to characterize the morphology of the GG Tau A disk, one of the largest and most massive circumbinary disks, and trace evidence for binary-disk interactions. We obtained observations in polarized scattered light of GG Tau A using the SPHERE/IRDIS instrument in the H-band filter. We analyze the observed disk morphology and substructures. We run 2D hydrodynamical models simulating the evolution of the circumbinary ring over the lifetime of the disk. The disk, as well as the cavity and the inner region are highly structured with several shadowed regions, spiral structures, and streamer-like filaments, some of them detected for the first time. The streamer-like filaments appear to connect the outer ring with the northern arc. Their azimuthal spacing suggests that they may be generated by periodic perturbations by the binary, tearing off material from the inner edge of the outer disk once during each orbit. By comparing observations to hydrodynamical simulations we find that the main features, in particular the gap size, as well as the spiral and streamer filaments, can be qualitatively explained by the gravitational interactions of a binary with semi-major axis of $\sim$35 au on an orbit coplanar with the circumbinary ring., Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A

Recent high-contrast imaging surveys, looking for planets in young, nearby systems showed evidence of a small number of giant planets at relatively large separation beyond typically 20 au where those surveys are the most sensitive. Access to smaller physical separations between 5 and 20 au is the next step for future planet imagers on 10 m telescopes and ELTs in order to bridge the gap with indirect techniques (radial velocity, transit, astrometry with Gaia). In that context, we recently proposed a new algorithm, Keplerian-Stacker, combining multiple observations acquired at different epochs and taking into account the orbital motion of a potential planet present in the images to boost the ultimate detection limit. We showed that this algorithm is able to find planets in time series of simulated images of SPHERE even when a planet remains undetected at one epoch. Here, we validate the K-Stacker algorithm performances on real SPHERE datasets, to demonstrate its resilience to instrumental speckles and the gain offered in terms of true detection. This will motivate future dedicated multi-epoch observation campaigns in high-contrast imaging to search for planets in emitted and reflected light. Results. We show that K-Stacker achieves high success rate when the SNR of the planet in the stacked image reaches 7. The improvement of the SNR ratio goes as the square root of the total exposure time. During the blind test and the redetection of HD 95086 b, and betaPic b, we highlight the ability of K-Stacker to find orbital solutions consistent with the ones derived by the state of the art MCMC orbital fitting techniques, confirming that in addition to the detection gain, K-Stacker offers the opportunity to characterize the most probable orbital solutions of the exoplanets recovered at low signal to noise., Comment: Astronomy & Astrophysics accepted, 13 Pages, 11 Figures

Proxima Centauri is known to host an earth-like planet in its habitable zone; very recently a second candidate planet was proposed based on radial velocities. At quadrature, the expected projected separation of this new candidate is larger than 1 arcsec, making it a potentially interesting target for direct imaging. While difficult, identification of the optical counterpart of this planet would allow detailed characterization of the closest planetary system. We searched for a counterpart in SPHERE images acquired during four years through the SHINE survey. In order to account for the large orbital motion of the planet, we used a method that assumes the circular orbit obtained from radial velocities and exploits the sequence of observations acquired close to quadrature in the orbit. We checked this with a more general approach that considers keplerian motion, K-stacker. We did not obtain a clear detection. The best candidate has S/N=6.1 in the combined image. A statistical test suggests that the probability that this detection is due to random fluctuation of noise is < 1% but this result depends on the assumption that distribution of noise is uniform over the image. The position of this candidate and the orientation of its orbital plane fit well with observations in the ALMA 12m array image. However, the astrometric signal expected from the orbit of the candidate we detected is 3-sigma away from the astrometric motion of Proxima as measured from early Gaia data. This, together with the unexpectedly high flux associated with our direct imaging detection, means we cannot confirm that our candidate is indeed Proxima c. On the other hand, if confirmed, this would be the first observation in imaging of a planet discovered from radial velocities and the second one (after Fomalhaut b) of reflecting circumplanetary material. SPHERE (Beuzit et al,. 2019) has now been in operation at the VLT for more than 5 years, demonstrating a high level of performance. SPHERE has produced outstanding results using a variety of operating modes, primarily in the field of direct imaging of exoplanetary systems, focusing on exoplanets as point sources and circumstellar disks as extended objects. The achievements obtained thus far with SPHERE (~200 refereed publications) in different areas (exoplanets, disks, solar system, stellar physics...) have motivated a large consortium to propose an even more ambitious set of science cases, and its corresponding technical implementation in the form of an upgrade. The SPHERE+ project capitalizes on the expertise and lessons learned from SPHERE to push high contrast imaging performance to its limits on the VLT 8m-telescope. The scientific program of SPHERE+ described in this document will open a new and compelling scientific window for the upcoming decade in strong synergy with ground-based facilities (VLT/I, ELT, ALMA, and SKA) and space missions (Gaia, JWST, PLATO and WFIRST). While SPHERE has sampled the outer parts of planetary systems beyond a few tens of AU, SPHERE+ will dig into the inner regions around stars to reveal and characterize by mean of spectroscopy the giant planet population down to the snow line. Building on SPHERE's scientific heritage and resounding success, SPHERE+ will be a dedicated survey instrument which will strengthen the leadership of ESO and the European community in the very competitive field of direct imaging of exoplanetary systems.
