This is an expository-survey on weak stability of bounded linear operators acting on normed spaces in general and, in particular, on Hilbert spaces. The paper gives a comprehensive account of the problem of weak operator stability, containing a few new results and some unanswered questions. It also gives an updated review of the literature on the weak stability of operators over the past sixty years, including present-day research trends. It is verified that the majority of the weak stability literature is concentrated on Hilbert-space operators. We discuss why this preference occurs and also why the weak stability of unitary operators is central to the Hilbert-space stability problem.

The paper proves two results involving a pair (A,B) of P-biisometric or (m,P)-biisometric Hilbert-space operators for arbitrary positive integer m and positive operator P. It is shown that if A and B are power bounded and the pair (A,B) is (m,P)-biisometric for some m, then it is a P-biisometric pair. The important case when P is invertible is treated in detail. It is also shown that if (A,B) is P-biisometric, then there are biorthogonal sequences with respect to the inner product <.;.>_P= that have a shift-like behaviour with respect to this inner product., Comment: Linear and Multilinear Algebra, to appear (2024)

It is known that weak l-sequential supercyclicity implies weak quasistability, and it is still unknown weather weak l-sequential supercyclicity implies weak stability, much less whether weak supercyclicity implies weak stability (although it is known for a long time that strong supercyclicity implies strong stability). It is shown that weak l-sequential supercyclicity implies weak stability under the assumption of boundedly spaced subsequences. It is given an example of a power bounded quasistable operator which is not weakly stable.

It is known that supercyclicity implies strong stability. It is not known whether weak l-sequential supercyclicity implies weak stability. In this paper we prove that weak l-sequential supercyclicity implies weak quasistability. Corollaries concerning the characterisation of (i) weakly l-sequentially supercyclic vectors that are not (strongly) supercyclic, and (ii) weakly l-sequentially supercyclic isometries, are also proved.

A bounded linear operator $A$ on a Hilbert space $\mathcal{H}$ is posinormal if there exists a positive operator $P$ such that $AA^{*} = A^{*}PA$. We show that if $A$ is posinormal with closed range, then $A^n$ is posinormal and has closed range for all integers $n\ge 1$. Because the collection of posinormal operators includes all hyponormal operators, we obtain as a corollary that powers of closed-range hyponormal operators continue to have closed range. We also present a simple example of a closed-range operator $T: \mathcal{H}\to \mathcal{H}$ such that $T^2$ does not have closed range., Comment: 4 pages. Square of a posinormal operator is not necessarily posinormal$.$ But (i) powers of quasiposinormal operators are quasiposinormal and, under closed ranges assumption, powers of (ii) posinormal operators are posinormal, (iii) of operators that are both posinormal and coposinormal are posinormal and coposinormal, and (iv) of semi-Fredholm posinormal operators are posinormal.

The paper deals with extension of bounded bilinear maps$.$ It gives a necessary and sufficient condition for extending a bounded bilinear map on the Cartesian product of subspaces of Banach spaces$.$ This leads to a full characterization for extension of bounded bilinear maps on the Cartesian product of arbitrary subspaces of Hilbert spaces$.$ Applications concerning projective tensor products are also investigated.

This is an expository paper on tensor products where the standard approaches for constructing concrete instances of algebraic tensor products of linear spaces, via quotient spaces or via linear maps of bilinear maps, are reviewed by reducing them to different but isomorphic interpretations of an abstract notion, viz., the universal property, which is based on a pair of axioms.

Every new inner product in a Hilbert space is obtained from the original one by means of a unique positive operator$.$ The first part of the paper is a survey on applications of such a technique, including a characterization of similarity to isometries$.$ The second part focuses on Banach limits for dealing with power bounded operators. It is shown that if a power bounded operator for which the sequence of shifted Ces\`aro means converges (at least in the weak topology) uniformly in the shift parameter, then it has a Ces\`aro asymptotic limit coinciding with its $\varphi$-asymptotic limit for all Banach limits $\varphi$.

The purpose of this paper is to characterize weak supercyclicity for Hilbert-space contractions, which is shown to be equivalent to characterizing weak supercyclicity for unitary operators$.$ This is naturally motivated by an open question that asks whether every weakly supercyclic power bounded operator is weakly stable (which in turn is naturally motivated by a result that asserts that every supercyclic power bounded operator is strongly stable)$.$ Precisely, weakly supercyclicity is investigated in light of boundedly spaced subsequences as discussed in Lemma 3.1$.$ The main result in Theorem 4.1 characterizes weakly l-sequentially supercyclic unitary operators $U\!$ that are weakly unstable in terms of boundedly spaced subsequences of the power sequence $\{U^n\}.$ Remark 4.1 shows that characterizing any form of weak super\-cyclicity for weakly unstable unitary operators is equivalent to characterizing any form of weak supercyclicity for weakly unstable contractions after the Nagy--Foia\c s--Langer decomposition.

There is no supercyclic power bounded operator of class $C_{1{\textstyle\cdot}}.$ There exist, however, weakly l-sequentially supercyclic unitary operators$.$ We show that if $T$ is a weakly l-sequentially supercyclic power bounded operator of class $C_{1{\textstyle\cdot}}$, then it has an extension $\widehat T$ which is a weakly l-sequentially supercyclic singular-continuous unitary (and $\widehat T$ has a Rajchman scalar spectral measure whenever $T$ is weakly stable)$.$ The above result implies $\sigma_{\kern-1ptP}(T)=\sigma_{\kern-1ptP}(T^*)=\varnothing$, and also that if a weakly l-sequentially supercyclic operator is similar to an isometry, then it is similar to a unitary operator.

A Hilbert space operator $S\in\B$ is left $m$-invertible by $T\in\B$ if $$\sum_{j=0}^m{(-1)^{m-j}\left(\begin{array}{clcr}m\\j\end{array}\right)T^jS^j}=0,$$ $S$ is $m$-isometric if $$\sum_{j=0}^m{(-1)^{m-j}\left(\begin{array}{clcr}m\\j\end{array}\right){S^*}^jS^j}=0$$ and $S$ is $(m,C)$-isometric for some conjugation $C$ of $\H$ if $$\sum_{j=0}^m{(-1)^{m-j}\left(\begin{array}{clcr}m\\j\end{array}\right){S^*}^jCS^jC}=0.$$ If a power bounded operator $S$ is left invertible by a power bounded operator $T$, then $S$ (also, $T^*$) is similar to an isometry. Translated to $m$-isometric and $(m,C)$-isometric operators $S$ this implies that $S$ is $1$-isometric, equivalently isometric, and (respectively) $(1,C)$-isometric., Comment: 10

The residual spectrum of a power bounded operator lies in the open unit disk.

The purpose of this paper is to give a survey on the notions of distance between subsets either of a metric space or of a measure space, including definitions, a classification, and a discussion of the best-known distance functions, which is followed by a review on applications used in many areas of knowledge, ranging from theoretical to practical applications.

If a Banach-space operator has a complemented range, then its normed-space adjoint has a complemented kernel and the converse holds on a reflexive Banach space. It is also shown when complemented kernel for an operator is equivalent to complemented range for its normed-space adjoint. This is applied to compact operators and to compact perturbations. In particular, compact perturbations of semi-Fredholm operators have complemented range and kernel for both the perturbed operator and its normed-space adjoint

The sets of strongly supercyclic, weakly l-sequentially supercyclic, weakly sequentially supercyclic, and weakly supercyclic vectors for an arbitrary normed-space operator are all dense in the normed space, regardless the notion of denseness one is considering, provided they are nonempty.

This paper considers weak supercyclicity for bounded linear operators on a normed space. On the one hand, weak supercyclicity is investigated for classes of Hilbert-space operators: (i) self-adjoint operators are not weakly supercyclic, (ii) diagonalizable operators are not weakly l-sequentially supercyclic, and (iii) weak l-sequential supercyclicity is preserved between a unitary operator and its adjoint. On the other hand, weak supercyclicity is investigated for classes of normed-space operators: (iv) the point spectrum of the normed-space adjoint of a power bounded supercyclic operator is either empty or is a singleton in the open unit disk, (v) weak l-sequential supercyclicity coincides with supercyclicity for compact operators, and (vi) every compact weakly l-sequentially supercyclic operator is quasinilpotent.
