Art Practice - Abstract
The complexities of an art practice – often incorporating latent methods, questions and influences – can be hard to make sense of, even by the maker. The purpose and validity of messy, iterative, searching enquiries can often only be understood once they have become folded into the artwork. Learning occurs within, and through, practice. A word in your ear: The undoing of an object as a strategy for learning in Fine Art practice aims to develop an approach which captures how an artist learns, seeking to expose the very particular type of learning that occurs through the process of making an artwork. Taking the form of an instruction manual, this project positions the reader precisely in the active space in which an artwork is constructed: a methodology which is intended to liberate the language of making from the need for academic explanation. The use of instruction, and the consequent removal of ‘I’, enables a close and persistent scrutiny of each making task; the form of the project proposes that this knowledge is, in turn, shared with others. As the construction of one artwork is recalled and retold, the manual is generated; the learning that is so intrinsic to the artwork’s creation and form is folded into the object that the manual becomes. Told in reverse, the instructions serve to map the artistic process backwards – from the final point of de-installing the artwork in an exhibition to the very beginning of its construction. This undoing of the process encourages the evocation of sensations of discovery and disorientation in the reader. By retelling the making of the work in this seemingly counter-intuitive order, familiar iterations of the sequence of actions are subverted; knowledge and learning are unfolded both gradually and purposefully. This project sets out to exemplify the active learning necessitated by the process of making an artwork – through the demonstration of the act itself. The manual employs a number of systems in order to reveal the complex process of making an artwork. These devices combine to stage the complexity of an art practice: one probes, reacts, talks, listens, argues, debates and oscillates between holding one’s nerve and feeling apprehension. Each of the constituent elements performs a different role and purpose in the overall function of the manual. Alongside the written and diagrammatic instructions are tangential interruptions: A Word in My Ear and Cautions. These function to give form to the thinking that circulates, penetrates, informs and interrupts the making process, making explicit the unruly and stabilising thinking spaces of art practice that get swallowed up or else occupy a mostly suppressed context or form of knowledge or learning. A Word in My Ear shares the private voice of thinking in making. Running adjacent to the instructional text, it recalls thoughts, conversations, and things read or seen throughout the process. The Cautions function as interruptions throughout the instructional information, drawing attention to particular issues or questions which emerge. This method of interruption aims to enable the reader to access the problems that readily stop the making process in its tracks. Practical, theoretical and contextual issues are treated equally, proposing a flattened hierarchy of information and subsequent learning. The manual uses a tab system in order to help the reader move though its sections. Along with the sections that detail the practical stages of the construction of the artwork, there are eight coloured, tabbed sections. These coloured sections refer to eight significant words that appear frequently throughout the instructional text. As the reader navigates the instructional text, the significant words crop up and are highlighted in the particular colour that denotes their tab. This invites the reader to move out of this text to a parallel relevant section in the manual. By initiating a process of twisting and looping, which is reliant on the inclination of the reader to break from the assembly of instructional parts, a more knotted relationship with the object is suddenly possible – one that is akin to the complexity of making an artwork itself. A particular word is identified as being significant when it holds durational curiosity or endures over time. This criterion for selection is not arbitrary but, rather, belligerently privileges a subjective methodology, pushing for and defending its significance in art practice research. The coloured tab sections include texts, artworks and objects that think through the significant word. No explicit analysis of this material is offered; rather, it is positioned as a form of analysis in its own right, directly acknowledging the significance of other voices in the processes of the research. The inclusion of these encounters is an important function of the manual. Such encounters reveal how a different direction for the work, another preoccupation, a wrong turn or a new way of seeing – a new perspective – is triggered in practice, thereby inviting the reader to make new connections of their own as they navigate the manual’s content. The manual can be activated to produce different types of learning encounters. In its simplest terms, the manual can act as a resource: a medium through which one may think through the key themes that are unveiled or highlighted by the making of the artwork. The instructions can be enacted and realised in order to make the work, thus offering the reader the potential for a direct physical relationship with material in order to generate a haptic, experiential, pedagogic event. However, the primary function of the manual is to take the reader beyond the territory of its own production – and that of the artwork it makes – by contributing more than its content. Pertinently, it should be understood to be the product of an absurdly rational attempt to provide order to the necessarily complex endeavour of making of an artwork. This project sets out to offer a strategy to capture the very particular type of learning that occurs in, and through, art practice. In the form of an instruction manual, this work offers a new form of vital evidence for how artists learn through making. Such evidence affords insights to educators and learners from within the discipline – as well as to those skeptical of the value of this activity. Proposed as a pedagogical tool, the behaviors and thinking that are revealed by the manual are liberated as unique sites of knowledge production and shared as crucial material in making as research. This work was submitted as a printed manual. This PDF is not the intended form for the work. A hard copy of the manual is kept in the Bodleian Library, Oxford or is available by emailing natashakidd.manual@gmail.com

Following the completion in May 2011 of the shutdown for the installation of the beryllium wall and the tungsten divertor, the first set of JET campaigns have addressed the investigation of the retention properties and the development of operational scenarios with the new plasma-facing materials. The large reduction in the carbon content (more than a factor ten) led to a much lower Zeff (1.2-1.4) during L- and H-mode plasmas, and radiation during the burn-through phase of the plasma initiation with the consequence that breakdown failures are almost absent. Gas balance experiments have shown that the fuel retention rate with the new wall is substantially reduced with respect to the C wall. The re-establishment of the baseline H-mode and hybrid scenarios compatible with the new wall has required an optimization of the control of metallic impurity sources and heat loads. Stable type-I ELMy H-mode regimes with H98,y2 close to 1 and βN ∼ 1.6 have been achieved using gas injection. ELM frequency is a key factor for the control of the metallic impurity accumulation. Pedestal temperatures tend to be lower with the new wall, leading to reduced confinement, but nitrogen seeding restores high pedestal temperatures and confinement. Compared with the carbon wall, major disruptions with the new wall show a lower radiated power and a slower current quench. The higher heat loads on Be wall plasma-facing components due to lower radiation made the routine use of massive gas injection for disruption mitigation essential. © 2013 IAEA, Vienna.

The first tokamak discharges with deuterium-tritium mixtures have been carried out in the Joint European Torus (JET). The main objectives were to produce more than IMW of fusion power in a controlled way, to determine tritium retention in torus systems and to establish effective means of tritium removal. The experiments were undertaken within limits imposed by restrictions on vessel activation and tritium usage. Deuterium plasmas were heated by high power deuterium neutral beams from fourteen sources and fuelled by two neural beam sources injecting tritium. In the best (D-T discharge), the tritium concentration was about 11% at peak performance, when total neutron emission rate was 6.0*1017 s-1, with 1.7 MW of fusion power. The fusion amplification factor QDT was 0.15. With optimum tritium concentration, this pulse would have produced a fusion power approximately=5 MW and nominal QDT=0.46. The same extrapolation for the best pure deuterium discharge gives about 11 MW and a nominal QDT=1.14. Techniques for introducing, tracking, monitoring and recovering tritium were highly effective.

fungi - Abstract
1. Ecologists concerned with life-history strategies of parasitoid wasps have recently focused on interspecific variation in the fraction of the maximum potential lifetime egg complement that is mature when the female emerges into the environment. Species that have all of this complement mature upon emergence are termed 'pro-ovigenic', while those that do not are termed 'synovigenic'. We document and quantify the diversity of egg maturation patterns among 638 species of parasitoid wasps from 28 families. 2. We test a series of hypotheses concerning variation in 'ovigeny' and likely life- history correlates by devising a quantitative index - the proportion of the maximum potential lifetime complement that is mature upon female emergence. 3. Synovigeny, which we define as emerging with at least some immature eggs, was found to be by far the predominant egg maturation pattern (98.12% of species). Even allowing for some taxonomic bias in our sample of species, pro-ovigeny is rare among parasitoid wasps. 4. There is strong evidence for a predicted continuum in ovigeny index among parasitoid wasps, from pro-ovigenic (ovigeny index = 1) to extremely synovigenic species (ovigeny index = 0). 5. As predicted, synovigenic species are longer-lived than pro- ovigenic ones, and ovigeny index and life span are negatively correlated across parasitoid taxa, suggesting a life span cost of concentrating reproductive effort early in adult life. 6. There is equivocal evidence that host feeding (i.e, consumption of host haemolymph and/or tissues by adult wasps) is confined to synovigenic parasitoid wasps. It is also not certain from our analyses whether host feeding is associated with a relatively low ovigeny index. 7. As predicted, egg resorption capability is concentrated among producers of yolk-rich eggs. Also, the hypothesis that it is associated with a tendency towards a low ovigeny index is supported. Parasitoid species that produce yolk-rich eggs also exhibit a lower ovigeny index than species that produce yolk-deficient eggs. 8. Ovigeny index appears to be linked to parasitoid development mode (koinobiosis-idiobiosis). 9. We conclude that 'ovigeny' is a concept applicable to insects generally. - Abstract
We consider the model-checking problem for C programs with (1) data ranging over very large domains, (2) (recursive) procedure calls, and (3) concurrent parallel components that communicate via synchronizing actions. We model such programs using communicating pushdown systems, and reduce the reachability problem for this model to deciding the emptiness of the intersection of two context-free languages L1 and L2. We tackle this undecidable problem using a CounterExample Guided Abstraction Refinement (CEGAR) scheme. We implemented our technique in the model checker MAGIC and found a previously unknown bug in a version of a Windows NT Bluetooth driver. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
This paper presents a toolset for model checking x86 executables. The members of the toolset are CodeSurfer/x86, WPDS++, and the Path Inspector. CodeSurfer/x86 is used to extract a model from an executable in the form of a weighted pushdown system. WPDS++ is a library for answering generalized reachability queries on weighted pushdown systems. The Path Inspector is a software model checker built on top of CodeSurfer and WPDS++ that supports safety queries about the program's possible control configurations. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
