With our recently proposed effective Hamiltonian via Monte Carlo, we are able to compute low energy physics of quantum systems. The advantage is that we can obtain not only the spectrum of ground and excited states, but also wave functions. 18. Analyzing the Size and Affecting Factors of Household Food Waste in China

Abstract

Although food waste has become an increasingly important issue in China, little attention has been given to its scale and determining factors in the related literature of food waste. This study uses the China Health and Nutrition Survey (CHNS) data surveyed in 1991, 2000 and 2009 to investigate the food waste behavior of Chinese households over the twenty years. In addition, the factors affecting food waste at home were identified and evaluated using the double hurdle model. The survey results show that the food waste amount at home per household has declined over the study span, likely due to the increase of outside-dining, while the percentage of households incurring food waste was on the rise. Also, among the factors associated with household food waste, the household size and regional differences in dietary habits were found positively correlated with food waste over time. In addition, the high-income families tended to generate more waste than low-income families after 2000. The age, education and employment characteristics of the main female member were also related with household food waste although the impact on food waste varied over time. 19. Circular RNA circ-ABCB10 promotes the proliferation and invasion of thyroid cancer by targeting KLF6.

Abstract

OBJECTIVE: Recent researches have proved that circular RNAs (circRNAs) play important roles in many diseases. Thyroid cancer is one of the most common malignant tumors worldwide. Therefore, the aim of this study was to investigate the role of circ-ABCB10 in thyroid cancer. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Circ-ABCB10 expression in 40 paired thyroid cancer tissues and adjacent normal tissues was monitored by Real Time-quantitative Polymerase Chain Reaction (RT-qPCR). Subsequently, circ-ABCB10 was silenced or overexpressed in thyroid cancer cells. Function assays were conducted to explore the role of circ-ABCB10 in the proliferation and invasion of thyroid cancer in vitro. Furthermore, RT-qPCR and Western blot assay were performed to elucidate the potential underlying mechanism. RESULTS: Circ-ABCB10 expression was significantly higher in thyroid cancer tissues than that in adjacent tissues. The growth ability of thyroid cancer cells was significantly inhibited after circ-ABCB10 silence. However, the growth ability of thyroid cancer cells was remarkably promoted after circ-ABCB10 was overexpressed in vitro. Similarly, the invasion of thyroid cancer cells was significantly inhibited or promoted after circ-ABCB10 silence or overexpression, respectively. Besides, the expression of KLF6 was markedly up-regulated by the silence of circ-ABCB10. However, KLF6 expression was down-regulated by overexpression of circ-ABCB10. CONCLUSIONS: Circ-ABCB10 was first identified as a novel oncogene in thyroid cancer. Furthermore, it significantly enhanced the proliferation and invasion of thyroid cancer by targeting KLF6. 22. Experimental study on oral sulfhydryl as an adjuvant for improving nitrate ester tolerance in an animal model.

Abstract

OBJECTIVE: As an initial step in exploring the feasibility of oral sulfhydryl as an adjuvant for improving nitrate ester tolerance, this study was designed to experimentally test the adjuvant therapy in a rabbit model of atherosclerosis (AS). MATERIALS AND METHODS: New Zealand white rabbits with induced AS were randomly divided into four groups: AS group, AS + nitrate ester group, AS + nitrate ester tolerance group, and AS + drug combination group. Additionally, four equivalent groups with healthy New Zealand white rabbits without AS were also conformed. After feeding the animals for 5 days, the concentrations of superoxide anion (•O2-), superoxide dismutase (SOD), malondialdehyde (MDA), nitric oxide (NO), and endothelin-1 (ET-1) in blood and the relaxation response of the aortic ring were determined in each subject. The vascular plaques in different treatment groups were assessed by Hematoxylin and eosin (HE) staining to investigate the therapeutic value of sulfhydryl as coadjuvant for improving nitrate ester tolerance, and changes in blood vessels in different treatment groups were studied by immunohistochemical assays. RESULTS: Our results showed no significant differences through time in the concentrations of •O2-, SOD, MDA, NO, ET-1 between the healthy control and the nitrate ester groups (p > 0.05). The levels of SOD and MDA in the nitrate ester tolerance group increased with time, however, the levels of •O2-, NO and ET-1 decreased gradually (p < 0.05). The NO, •O2- and ET-1 levels in both the AS and AS + nitrate ester tolerance groups were significantly decreased, but SOD and MDA were significantly increased (p < 0.05). SOD and MDA in the AS + nitrate ester group decreased gradually with time, but •O2-, NO- and ET-1 levels increased (p < 0.05). The levels of SOD and MDA in the AS + drug combination and the drug combination group decreased significantly with time, in contrast, those of •O2-, NOand ET-1 increased (p < 0.05). The results of HE staining proved that the atherosclerosis model was established successfully. CONCLUSIONS: We conclude the use of a sulfhydryl compound as an adjuvant significantly reduced nitrate ester tolerance, and this strategy was safe and looks promising for humans. Abstract

To investigate the chemical constituents from Hedyotis diffusa.The compounds were isolated and purified by various chromatographic techniques and identified by their physicochemical properties and spectral data.Eight compounds had been reported in last paper, and this time eight more compounds were isolated and identified as 6-hydroxystigmasta-4,22-dien-3-one (1), 3-hydroxystigmasta-4,22-dien-7-one (2), 2-hydroxy-3-methylanthraquinone (3), 2,6-dihydroxy-3-methyl-4-methoxyanthraquinone (4), iso-scutellarein (5), isoetin (6), aesculetin (7), gypsogenic acid (8).Compounds 1-3, 5-8 were obtained from the genus Hedyotis for the first time.

26. Designing superhard, self-toughening CrAlN coatings through grain boundary engineering

Abstract

One of the toughest challenges that hinders the application of ceramic coatings is their poor damage tolerance. Addressing this problem requires the development of novel micro- or nanostructures that would impart to these coatings both high hardness and high toughness. In this paper, CrAlN coatings, with varying Al contents up to 30 at.%, were engineered onto steel substrates using the magnetron sputtering technique. Whilst the addition of Al does not significantly alter the columnar microstructure, it does change the preferred grain orientation and increase the compressive residual stress. Moreover, the hardness, elastic strain to failure (H/E) and plastic deformation resistance (H 3/E 2) of the resultant CrAlN coating with the highest Al content were found to increase ∼47, ∼29 and ∼140%, respectively, as compared to CrN. Evidence collected from transmission electron microscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy experiments shows that AlN, existing in an amorphous state at the columnar CrN grain boundaries, has a crucial role in providing the unusual combination of high hardness and exceptional damage resistance. The results provide a new pathway to developing durable ceramic coatings suitable for applications involving severe loading conditions.

Abstract

In the present work, AISI M2 high speed steel is produced by the horizontal continuous casting process. The difference of solidification microstructure in ingots by mould casting and continuous casting has been examined by means of scanning electron microscope (SEM), electron back-scatter diffraction (EBSD), transmission electron microscope (TEM) and high resolution electron microscope (HREM). The results show that the as-cast structure consists of iron matrix and networks of M2C eutectic carbides, which are greatly refined in the continuous casting ingot compared to the case of ingot by mould casting. Meanwhile, the morphology of M2C eutectic carbides changes from the plate-like shape into the fibrous one. Micro-twining and stacking faults are observed in the plate-like M2C, whereas they are rarely identified in the fibrous M2C. Based on the characteristic of morphology and microstructure, it is expected that the plate-like M2C is a faceted phase while the fibrous M2C is a non-faceted phase. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
