Search

X-ray diffraction gratings play an essential role in high-resolution spectroscopy of astrophysical phenomena. We present some scientific highlights from the X-ray grating spectrometers (XGS) on board of the Chandra and XMM/Newton missions, XGS optical design, and the basic physics of grating diffraction geometry and efficiency. We review design, fabrication, and performance of the currently orbiting transmission and reflection grating elements, followed by descriptions of the state-of-the art of more advanced grating technologies that promise orders-of-magnitude improvements in XGS performance, especially in combination with advanced X-ray telescope mirrors. A few key science questions that require new grating technology are posed, and powerful future mission concepts and recent and approved missions are presented., Comment: 40 pages, 12 figures. The Orion Nebula Cluster (ONC) is the closest site of very young ($\sim$ 1 Myrs) massive star formation. The ONC hosts more than 1600 young and X-ray bright stars with masses ranging from $\sim$ 0.1 to 35 $M_\odot$. The Chandra HETGS Orion Legacy Project observed the ONC with the Chandra high energy transmission grating spectrometer (HETGS) for $2.1\,$Ms. We describe the spectral extraction and cleaning processes necessary to separate overlapping spectra. We obtained 36 high resolution spectra which includes a high brilliance X-ray spectrum of $\theta^1$ Ori C with over 100 highly significant X-ray lines. The lines show Doppler broadening between 300 and $400\;\mathrm{km}\;\mathrm{s}^{-1}$. Higher spectral diffraction orders allow us to resolve line components of high Z He-like triplets in $\theta^1$ Ori C with unprecedented spectral resolution. Long term light curves spanning $\sim$20 years show all stars to be highly variable, including the massive stars. Spectral fitting with thermal coronal emission line models reveals that most sources show column densities of up to a few times $10^{22}\,$cm$^{-2}$ and high coronal temperatures of 10 to 90 MK. We observe a bifurcation of the high temperature component where some stars show a high component of 40 MK, while others show above 60 MK indicating heavy flaring activity. Some lines are resolved with Doppler broadening above our threshold of $\sim200\;\mathrm{km}\;\mathrm{s}^{-1}$, up to $500\;\mathrm{km}\;\mathrm{s}^{-1}$. High-resolution X-ray spectra of $\pi\,$Aqr, a $\gamma\,$Cas-type star, obtained with the Chandra/HETG grating spectrometer, revealed emission lines of H-like ions of Mg, Si, S, and Fe, a strong, hard continuum, and a lack of He-like ions, indicating the presence of very hot thermal plasma. The X-ray light curve showed significant fluctuations, with coherent variability at period of about 3400 seconds in one observation. The hardness ratio was relatively constant except for one observation in which the spectrum was much harder and more absorbed. We interpret the X-ray emission as arising from accretion onto the secondary, which is likely a magnetic white dwarf, an intermediate polar system., Comment: 7 pages, 3 figures, 3 tables

We fit the high resolution \textit{Chandra} X-ray spectra of the O supergiant $\zeta$ Puppis using the variable boundary condition (VBC) line model to test the stability of its mass-loss rate between two epochs of observation: 2000 March and 2018 July -- 2019 August. At issue is whether the observed variations are induced by global changes in the cool (unshocked) wind itself or are isolated to the local pockets of hot gas (i.e., changes in the frequency and location of the shocks). Evidence in the literature favored the possibility of a 40 per cent increase in the mass flux of the entire stellar wind, based on X-ray reabsorption from a line-deshadowing-instability-inspired parameterization, whereas our fit parameters are consistent with a constant mass flux with a change in the velocity variations that determine the locations where shocks form. Our results suggest the shocks in the more recent data are formed at somewhat larger radii, mimicking the enhanced blueshifts and increased line fluxes interpreted in the previous analysis as being due to increases in both the X-ray generation and reabsorption from an overall stronger wind., Comment: 18 pages, 13 figures, 4 tables

Identifying trends between observational data and the range of physical parameters of massive stars is a critical step to the still-elusive full understanding of the source, structure, and evolution of X-ray emission from the stellar winds, requiring a substantial sample size and systematic analysis methods. The \emph{Chandra} data archive as of 2022 contains 37 high resolution spectra of O, B, and WR stars, observed with the \emph{Chandra}/HETGS and of sufficient quality to fit the continua and emission line profiles. Using a systematic approach to the data analysis, we explore morphological trends in the line profiles (i.e., O, Ne, Mg, Si) and find that the centroid offsets of resolved lines versus wavelength can be separated in three empirically-defined groups based on the amount of line broadening and centroid offset. Using \ion{Fe}{17} (15.01 \AA, 17.05 \AA) and \ion{Ne}{10} $\alpha$ (12.13 \AA) lines which are prevalent among the sample stars, we find a well-correlated linear trend of increasing Full Width Half Maximum (FWHM) with faster wind terminal velocity. The H-like/He-like total line flux ratio for strong lines displays different trends with spectral class depending on ion species. Some of the sources in our sample have peculiar properties (e.g., magnetic and $\gamma$ Cas-analogue stars) and we find that these sources stand out as outliers from more regular trends. Winds of massive stars are suspected to be inhomogeneous (or clumpy), which biases the measures of their mass loss rates. In High Mass X-ray Binaries (HMXBs), the compact object can be used as an orbiting X-ray point source to probe the wind and constrain its clumpiness. We perform spectro-timing analysis of the HMXB OAO 1657-415 with non-simultaneous NuSTAR and NICER observations. We compute the hardness ratio from the energy-resolved light curves, and using an adaptive rebinning technique, we thus select appropriate time segments to search for rapid spectral variations on timescales of a few hundreds to thousands of seconds. Column density and intensity of Iron K$\alpha$ line were strongly correlated, and the recorded spectral variations were consistent with accretion from a clumpy wind. We also illustrate a novel framework to measure clump sizes, masses in HMXBs more accurately based on absorption measurements and orbital parameters of the source. We then discuss the limitations posed by current X-ray spacecrafts in such measurements and present prospects with future X-ray missions. We find that the source pulse profiles show a moderate dependence on energy. We identify a previously undetected dip in the pulse profile visible throughout the NuSTAR observation near spin phase 0.15 possibly caused by intrinsic changes in accretion geometry close to the neutron star. We fit a new line shape model to \textit{Chandra} X-ray spectra of the O supergiant $\zeta$ Puppis to test the robustness of mass-loss rates derived from X-ray wind line profiles against different assumed heating models. Our goal is to track the hot gas by replacing the common assumption that it is proportional to the cool gas emission measure. Instead of assuming a turn-on radius for the hot gas (as appropriate for the line-deshadowing instability internal to the wind), we parametrize the hot gas in terms of a mean-free path for accelerated low-density gas to encounter slower high-density material. This alternative model is equally successful as previous approaches at fitting X-ray spectral lines in the 5 -- 17 \AA\ wavelength range. We find that the characteristic radii where the hottest gas appears is inversely proportional to line formation temperature, suggesting that stronger shocks appear generally closer to the surface. This picture is more consistent with pockets of low-density, rapid acceleration at the lower boundary than with an internally generated wind instability. We also infer an overall wind mass-loss rate from the profile shapes with a technique used previously in the literature. In doing so, we find evidence that the mass-loss rate derived from X-ray wind line profiles is not robust with respect to changes in the specific heating picture used., Comment: 11 Pages, 5 Figures, Published in MNRAS

WR 25 is a colliding-wind binary star system comprised of a very massive O2.5If*/WN6 primary and an O-star secondary in a 208-day period eccentric orbit. These hot stars have strong, highly-supersonic winds which interact to form a bright X-ray source from wind-collision-shocks whose conditions change with stellar separation. Different views through the WR and O star winds are afforded with orbital phase as the stars move about their orbits, allowing for exploration of wind structure in ways not easy or even possible for single stars. We have analyzed an on-axis Chandra/HETGS spectrum of WR 25 obtained shortly before periastron when the X-rays emanating from the system are the brightest. From the on-axis observations, we constrain the line fluxes, centroids, and widths of various emission lines, including He-triplets of Si XIII and Mg XI. We have also been able to include several serendipitous off-axis HETG spectra from the archive and study their flux variation with phase. Analysis of the recent long exposure Chandra X-ray observation of the early-type O star zeta Pup shows clear variability with a period previously reported in optical photometric studies. These 813 ks of HETG observations taken over a roughly one year time span have two signals of periodic variability: a high significance period of 1.7820 +/- 0.0008 day, and a marginal detection of periodic behavior close to either 5 day or 6 day period. A BRITE-Constellation nanosatellite optical photometric monitoring, using near-contemporaneous observations to the Chandra data, confirms a 1.78060 +/- 0.00088 day period for this star. The optical period coincides with the new Chandra period within their error ranges, demonstrating a link between these two wavebands and providing a powerful lever for probing the photosphere/wind connection in this star. The phase lag of the X-ray maximum relative to the optical maximum is approximately phi=0.45, but consideration of secondary maxima in both datasets indicates possibly two hot spots on the star with an X-ray phase lag of phi=0.1 each. The details of this periodic variation of the X-rays are probed by displaying a phased and trailed X-ray spectrum and by constructing phased light curves for wavelength bands within the HETG spectral coverage, ranging down to bands encompassing groups of emission lines. We propose that the 1.78 day period is the stellar rotation period and explore how stellar bright spots and associated co-rotating interacting regions or CIRs could explain the modulation of the optical and X-ray output for this star and their phase difference., Comment: 17 pages; 10 figures

We have obtained a very deep exposure (813 ks) of $\zeta\,$Puppis (O4 supergiant) with the Chandra/HETG Spectrometer. Here we report on analysis of the 1-9 \r{A} region, especially well suited for Chandra, which has a significant contribution from continuum emission between well separated emission lines from high-ionization species. These data allow us to study the hottest plasma present through the continuum shape and emission line strengths. Assuming a powerlaw emission measure distribution which has a high-temperature cut-off, we find that the emission is consistent with a thermal spectrum having a maximum temperature of 12 MK. This implies an effective wind shock velocity of $900\,\mathrm{km\,s^{-1}}$, well below the wind terminal speed of $2250\,\mathrm{km\,s^{-1}}$. For X-ray emission which forms close to the star, the speed and X-ray flux are larger than can be easily reconciled with strictly self-excited line-deshadowing-instability models, suggesting a need for a fraction of the wind to be accelerated extremely rapidly right from the base. The cluster NGC 3603 hosts some of the most massive stars in the Galaxy. With a modest 50 ks exposure with the Chandra High Energy Grating Spectrometer, we have resolved emission lines in spectra of several of the brightest cluster members which are of WNh and O spectral types. This observation provides our first definitive high-resolution spectra of such stars in this nearby starburst region. The stars studied have broadened X-ray emission lines, some with blue-shifted centroids, and are characteristic of massive stellar winds with terminal velocities around 2000--3000 km/s. X-ray luminosities and plasma temperatures are very high for both the WNh and O stars studied. With a deep Chandra/HETGS exposure of WR 6, we have resolved emission lines whose profiles show that the X-rays originate from a uniformly expanding spherical wind of high X-ray-continuum optical depth. The presence of strong helium-like forbidden lines places the source of X-ray emission at tens to hundreds of stellar radii from the photosphere. Variability was present in X-rays and simultaneous optical photometry, but neither were correlated with the known period of the system or with each other. An enhanced abundance of sodium revealed nuclear processed material, a quantity related to the evolutionary state of the star. The characterization of the extent and nature of the hot plasma in WR 6 will help to pave the way to a more fundamental theoretical understanding of the winds and evolution of massive stars., Comment: Accepted by the Astrophysical Journal

The Chandra High Energy Transmission Gratings (HETG) Orion Legacy Project (HOLP) is the first comprehensive set of observations of a very young massive stellar cluster which provides high resolution X-ray spectra of very young stars over a wide mass range (0.7 - 2.3 Msun). In this paper, we focus on the six brightest X-ray sources with T Tauri stellar counterparts which are well-characterized at optical and infra-red wavelengths. All stars show column densities which are substantially smaller than expected from optical extinction indicating that the sources are located on the near side of the cluster with respect to the observer as well as that these stars are embedded in more dusty environments. Stellar X-ray luminosities are well above $10^{31}$ erg/s, in some cases exceeding $10^{32}$ erg/s for a substantial amount of time. The stars during these observations show no flares but are persistently bright. The spectra can be well fit with two temperature plasma components of 10 MK and 40 MK, of which the latter dominates the flux by a ratio 6:1 on average. The total EMs range between 3 - 8$\times10^{54}$ cm$^{-3}$ and are comparable to active coronal sources. Limits on the forbidden to inter-combination line ratios in the He-Like K-shell lines show that we observe a predominantely optically thin plasma with electron densities below $10^{12}$ cm$^{-3}$. Observed abundances compare well with active coronal sources underlying the coronal nature of these sources. The surface flux in this sample of 0.6 to 2.3 Msun classical T Tauri stars shows that coronal activity and possibly coronal loop size increase significantly between ages 0.1 to 10 Myrs., Comment: 13 pages, 12 figures, submitted to the Astrophysical Journal

X-ray emission from stars much more massive than the Sun was discovered only 35 years ago. Such stars drive fast stellar winds where shocks can develop, and it is commonly assumed that the X-rays emerge from the shock-heated plasma. Many massive stars additionally pulsate. However, hitherto it was neither theoretically predicted nor observed that these pulsations would affect their X-ray emission. Here we report the discovery of pulsating X-rays from the massive B-type star Xi1 Canis Majoris. This star is a variable of beta Cephei type and has a strong magnetic field. Our observations with the XMM-Newton telescope reveal X-ray pulsations with the same period as the fundamental stellar pulsation. This discovery challenges our understanding of stellar winds from massive stars, their X-ray emission, and their magnetism., Comment: manuscript draft. Extensive X-ray and extreme ultraviolet (EUV) photometric observations of the eclipsing RS CVn system AR Lac were obtained over the years 1997 to 2013 with the Chandra X-ray Observatory Extreme Ultraviolet Explorer. During primary eclipse, HRC count rates decrease by ~40%. A similar minimum is seen during one primary eclipse observed by EUVE but not in others owing to intrinsic source variability. Little evidence for secondary eclipses is present in either the X-ray or EUV data, reminiscent of earlier X-ray and EUV observations. Primary eclipses allow us to estimate the extent of a spherically symmetric corona on the primary G star of about 1.3Rsun, or 0.86Rstar, and indicate the G star is likely brighter than the K component by a factor of 2-5. Brightness changes not attributable to eclipses appear to be dominated by stochastic variability and are generally non-repeating. X-ray and EUV light curves cannot therefore be reliably used to reconstruct the spatial distribution of emission assuming only eclipses and rotational modulation are at work. Moderate flaring is observed, where count rates increase by up to a factor of three above quiescence. Combined with older ASCA, Einstein, EXOSAT, ROSAT and Beppo-SAX observations, the data show that the level of quiescent coronal emission at X-ray wavelengths has remained remarkably constant over 33 years, with no sign of variation due to magnetic cycles. Variations in base level X-ray emission seen by Chandra over 13 years are only ~10%, while variations back to pioneering Einstein observations in 1980 amount to a maximum of 45% and more typically about 15%., Comment: To appear in the Astrophysical Journal

Chandra HETG spectra of the coronally active binary stars sigma Gem and HR 1099 are among the highest fluence observations for such systems taken at high spectral resolution in x-rays with this instrument. We compare their properties to solar flare spectra obtained with the Russian CORONAS-F RESIK instrument at similar resolution in an overlapping bandpass. We emphasize the comparisons of the 3.3-6.1 A region from solar flare spectra to the corresponding sigma Gem and HR 1099 spectra. We also model the the HETG spectra from 1.7-25 A to determine coronal temperatures and elemental abundances. Sigma Gem is a single lined coronally active long period binary which has a very hot corona. HR 1099 is a similar, but shorter period, double lined system. In the deep exposures we study emission from some of the weaker species, such as K, Na, and Al, which have the lowest first ionization potentials (FIP). The solar flare temperatures reach ~20 MK, comparable to the sigma Gem and HR 1099 coronae. During the Chandra exposures, sigma Gem was slowly decaying from a flare and its spectrum is well characterized by a collisional ionization equilibrium plasma with a broad temperature distribution ranging from 2-60 MK, peaking near 25 MK, but with substantial emission from 50 MK plasma. We have detected K XVIII and Na XI emission which allow us to set limits on their abundances. HR 1099 was also in a flare state but had no detectable K XVIII. These measurements provide new comparisons of solar and stellar coronal abundances, especially at the lowest FIP values. The low FIP elements do not show enhancement in the stellar coronae as they do in the Sun, except for K in sigma Gem. \mu\ Columbae is a prototypical weak-wind O-star for which we have obtained a high-resolution X-ray spectrum with the Chandra LETG/ACIS-S instrument and a low resolution spectrum with Suzaku. This allows us, for the first time, to investigate the role of X-rays on the wind structure in a bona fide weak-wind system and to determine whether there actually is a massive, hot wind. The X-ray emission measure indicates that the outflow is an order of magnitude greater than that derived from UV lines and is commensurate with the nominal wind-luminosity relationship for O-stars. Therefore, the ``weak-wind problem''---identified from cool wind UV/optical spectra---is largely resolved by accounting for the hot wind seen in X-rays. From X-ray line profiles, Doppler shifts, and relative strengths, we find that this weak-wind star is typical of other late O dwarfs. The X-ray spectra do not suggest a magnetically confined plasma---the spectrum is soft and lines are broadened; Suzaku spectra confirm the lack of emission above 2 keV. Nor do the relative line shifts and widths suggest any wind decoupling by ions. The He-like triplets indicate that the bulk of the X-ray emission is formed rather close to the star, within 5 stellar radii. Our results challenge the idea that some OB stars are ``weak-wind'' stars that deviate from the standard wind-luminosity relationship. We investigate X-ray emission properties of the peculiar X-ray source Theta2 Ori A in the Orion trapezium region using more than 500 ksec of HETGS spectral data in the quiescent state. The amount of exposure provides tight constraints on several important diagnostics involving O, Ne, Mg, and Si line flux ratios from He-like ion triplets, resonance line ratios of the H- and He-like lines and line widths. Accounting for the influence of the strong UV radiation field of the O9.7V star we can now place the He-like line origin well within two stellar radii of the O-star's surface. The lines are resolved with average line widths of 341+-38 km/s confirming a line origin relatively close to the stellar surface. In the framework of standard wind models this implies a rather weak, low opacity wind restricting wind shocks to temperatures not much larger than 2x10^6 K. The emission measure distribution of the X-ray spectrum, as reported previously, includes very high temperature components which are not easily explained in this framework. The X-ray properties are also not consistent with coronal emissions from an unseen low-mass companion nor with typical signatures from colliding wind interactions. The properties are more consistent with X-ray signatures observed in the massive Trapezium star Theta1 Ori C which has recently been successfully modeled with a magnetically confined wind model., Comment: 11 pages, 4 color postscript figures, Submitted to ApJ

We study the spectral and temporal behavior of X-ray flares from the active M-dwarf EV Lac in 200 ks of exposure with the Chandra/HETGS. We derive flare parameters by fitting an empirical function which characterizes the amplitude, shape, and scale. The flares range from very short (<1 ks) to long (10 ks) duration events with a range of shapes and amplitudes for all durations. We extract spectra for composite flares to study their mean evolution and to compare flares of different lengths. Evolution of spectral features in the density-temperature plane shows probable sustained heating. The short flares are significantly hotter than the longer flares. We investigate the structure of the wind in the neutron star X-ray binary system Vela X-1 by analyzing its flaring behavior. Vela X-1 shows constant flaring, with some flares reaching fluxes of more than 3.0 Crab between 20-60 keV for several 100 seconds, while the average flux is around 250 mCrab. We analyzed all archival INTEGRAL data, calculating the brightness distribution in the 20-60 keV band, which, as we show, closely follows a log-normal distribution. Orbital resolved analysis shows that the structure is strongly variable, explainable by shocks and a fluctuating accretion wake. Analysis of RXTE ASM data suggests a strong orbital change of N_H. Accreted clump masses derived from the INTEGRAL data are on the order of 5 x 10^19 -10^21 g. We show that the lightcurve can be described with a model of multiplicative random numbers. In the course of the simulation we calculate the power spectral density of the system in the 20-100 keV energy band and show that it follows a red-noise power law. We suggest that a mixture of a clumpy wind, shocks, and turbulence can explain the measured mass distribution. As the recently discovered class of supergiant fast X-ray transients (SFXT) seems to show the same parameters for the wind, the link between persistent HMXB like Vela X-1 and SFXT is further strengthened., Comment: 8 pages, 6 figures, accepted for publication in A&A

The recently released Chandra Transmission Grating Catalog and Archive, TGCat, presents a fully dynamic on-line catalog allowing users to browse and categorize Chandra gratings observations quickly and easily, generate custom plots of resulting response corrected spectra on-line without the need for special software and to download analysis ready products from multiple observations in one convenient operation. TGCat has been registered as a VO resource with the NVO providing direct access to the catalogs interface. The catalog is supported by a back-end designed to automatically fetch newly public data, process, archive and catalog them, At the same time utilizing an advanced queue system integrated into the archive's MySQL database allowing large processing projects to take advantage of an unlimited number of CPUs across a network for rapid completion. A unique feature of the catalog is that all of the high level functions used to retrieve inputs from the Chandra archive and to generate the final data products are available to the user in an ISIS written library with detailed documentation. Theta 1 Ori E is a young, moderate mass binary system, a rarely observed case of spectral-type G-giants of about 3 Solar masses, which are still collapsing towards the main sequence. We have obtained high resolution X-ray spectra with Chandra and find that the system is very active and similar to coronal sources, having emission typical of magnetically confined plasma: a broad temperature distribution with a hot component and significant high energy continuum; narrow emission lines from H- and He-like ions, as well as a range of Fe ions, and relative luminosity, L_x/L_bol = 0.001. Density, while poorly constrained, is consistent with the low density limits as determined from Mg XI and Ne IX emission lines. Coronal elemental abundances are sub-Solar, with Ne being the highest at about 0.4 times Solar. We find a possible trend in Trapezium hot plasmas towards low relative abundances of Fe, O, and Ne, which is hard to explain in terms of the dust depletion scenarios of low-mass young stars. Variability was unusually low relative to other coronally active stars. The emission is similar to post main-sequence G-stars. Coronal structures could be compact or comparable to the dimensions of the stellar radii. Low-mass pre-main sequence (PMS) stars are strong and variable X-ray emitters, as has been well established by EINSTEIN and ROSAT observatories. It was originally believed that this emission was of thermal nature and primarily originated from coronal activity (magnetically confined loops, in analogy with Solar activity) on contracting young stars. Broadband spectral analysis showed that the emission was not isothermal and that elemental abundances were non-Solar. The resolving power of the Chandra and XMM X-ray gratings spectrometers have provided the first, tantalizing details concerning the physical conditions such as temperatures, densities, and abundances that characterize the X-ray emitting regions of young star. These existing high resolution spectrometers, however, simply do not have the effective area to measure diagnostic lines for a large number of PMS stars over required to answer global questions such as: how does magnetic activity in PMS stars differ from that of main sequence stars, how do they evolve, what determines the population structure and activity in stellar clusters, and how does the activity influence the evolution of protostellar disks. Highly resolved (R>3000) X-ray spectroscopy at orders of magnitude greater efficiency than currently available will provide major advances in answering these questions. Understanding the origins and distribution of matter in the Universe is one of the most important quests in physics and astronomy. Themes range from astro-particle physics to chemical evolution in the Galaxy to cosmic nucleosynthesis and chemistry in an anticipation of a full account of matter in the Universe. Studies of chemical evolution in the early Universe will answer questions about when and where the majority of metals were formed, how they spread and why they appar today as they are. The evolution of matter in our Universe cannot be characterized as a simple path of development. In fact the state of matter today tells us that mass and matter is under constant reformation through on-going star formation, nucleosynthesis and mass loss on stellar and galactic scales. X-ray absorption studies have evolved in recent years into powerful means to probe the various phases of interstellar and intergalactic media. Future observatories such as IXO and Gen-X will provide vast new opportunities to study structure and distribution of matter with high resolution X-ray spectra. Specifically the capabilities of the soft energy gratings with a resolution of R=3000 onboard IXO will provide ground breaking determinations of element abundance, ionization structure, and dispersion velocities of the interstellar and intergalactic media of our Galaxy and the Local Group, Comment: A White Paper Submitted to the Astro2010 Decadal Survey

We present Chandra-HETGS observations of the Herbig Ae star HD 104237 and the associated young stars comprising lower mass stars, in the 0.15-1.75\msol mass range, in their pre-main sequence phase. The brightest X-ray source in the association is the central system harboring the Herbig Ae primary, and a K3 companion. Its X-ray variability indicates modulation possibly on time scales of the rotation period of the Herbig Ae star, and this would imply that the primary significantly contributes to the overall emission. The spectrum of the Herbig Ae+K3 system shows a soft component significantly more pronounced than in other K-type young stars. This soft emission is reminiscent of the unusually soft spectra observed for the single Herbig Ae stars HD 163296 and AB Aur, and therefore we tentatively attribute it to the Herbig Ae of the binary system. The HETGS spectrum shows strong emission lines corresponding to a wide range of plasma temperatures. The He-like triplet of MgXI and NeIX suggest the presence of plasma at densities of about $10^{12}$ cm$^{-3}$, possibly indicating accretion related X-ray production mechanism. The analysis of the zero-order spectra of the other sources indicates X-ray emission characteristics typical of pre-main sequence stars of similar spectral type, with the exception of the T Tauri HD104237-D, whose extremely soft emission is very similar to the emission of the classical T Tauri star TW Hya, and suggests X-ray production by shocked accreting plasma., Comment: accepted for publication on the Astrophysical Journal

We present high-resolution X-ray spectra of the multiple T Tauri star system Hen 3-600, obtained with the High Energy Transmission Grating Spectrograph on the Chandra X-ray Observatory. Two binary components were detected in the zeroth-order image. Hen 3-600-A, which has a large mid-infrared excess, is a 2-3 times fainter in X-rays than Hen 3-600-B, due to a large flare on B. The dispersed X-ray spectra of the two primary components overlap spatially; spectral analysis was performed on the combined system. Analysis of the individual spectra was limited to regions where the contributions of A and B can be disentangled. This analysis results in two lines of evidence indicating that the X-ray emission from Hen 3-600 is derived from accretion processes: line ratios of O VII indicate that the characteristic density of its X-ray-emitting plasma is large; a significant component of low-temperature plasma is present and is stronger in component A. These results are consistent with results obtained from X-ray gratings spectroscopy of more rapidly accreting systems. All of the signatures of Hen 3-600 that are potential diagnostics of accretion activity -- X-ray emission, UV excess, H-alpha emission, and weak infrared excess -- suggest that its components represent a transition phase between rapidly accreting, classical T Tauri stars and non-accreting, weak-lined T Tauri stars., Comment: latex, 27 pages, 12 figures, 6 tables; accepted by ApJ

We have investigated the optical thickness of the coronal plasma through the analysis of high-resolution X-ray spectra of a large sample of active stars observed with the High Energy Transmission Grating Spectrometer on Chandra. In particular, we probed for the presence of significant resonant scattering in the strong Lyman series lines arising from hydrogen-like oxygen and neon ions. The active RS CVn-type binaries II Peg and IM Peg and the single M dwarf EV Lac show significant optical depth. For these active coronae, the Lya/Lyb ratios are significantly depleted as compared with theoretical predictions and with the same ratios observed in similar active stars. Interpreting these decrements in terms of resonance scattering of line photons out of the line-of-sight, we are able to derive an estimate for the typical size of coronal structures, and from these we also derive estimates of coronal filling factors. For all three sources we find that the both the photon path length as a fraction of the stellar radius, and the implied surface filling factors are very small and amount to a few percent at most. The measured Lya/Lyb ratios are in good agreement with APED theoretical predictions, thus indicating negligible optical depth, for the other sources in our sample. We discuss the implications for coronal structuring and heating flux requirements. For the stellar sample as a whole, the data suggest increasing quenching of Lya relative to Lyb as function of both L_x/L_bol and the density-sensitive MgXI forbidden to intercombination line ratio, as might generally be expected., Comment: Accepted for publication on the Astrophysical Journal

We analyze a 96 ks Chandra/HETGS observation of the single G-type giant HR 9024. The high flux allows us to examine spectral line and continuum diagnostics at high temporal resolution, to derive plasma parameters. A time-dependent 1D hydrodynamic model of a loop with half-length $L = 5 \times 10^{11}$ cm ($\sim R_{\star}/2$), cross-section radius $r = 4.3 \times 10^{10}$ cm, with a heat pulse of 15 ks and $2 \times 10^{11}$~erg cm$^{-2}$ s$^{-1}$ deposited at the loop footpoints, satisfactorily reproduces the observed evolution of temperature and emission measure, derived from the analysis of the strong continuum emission. For the first time we can compare predictions from the hydrodynamic model with single spectral features, other than with global spectral properties. We find that the model closely matches the observed line emission, especially for the hot ($\sim 10^8$ K) plasma emission of the FeXXV complex at $\sim 1.85$\AA. The model loop has $L/R_{\star} \sim 1/2$ and aspect ratio $r/L \sim 0.1$ as typically derived for flares observed in active stellar coronae, suggesting that the underlying physics is the same for these very dynamic and extreme phenomena in stellar coronae independently on stellar parameters and evolutionary stage., Comment: 26 pages. Massive stars rarely show intrinsic X-ray variability. The only O-stars credited to be intrinsically variable are theta1 Ori C due to effects from magnetic confinement of its wind, and theta2 Ori A suspected of similar activity. Early Chandra observations have shown that the most massive star system in the Orion Trapezium Cluster, theta2 Ori A, shows rapid variability on time scales of hours. We determine X-ray fluxes and find that the star shows very strong variability over the last 5 years. We observed a second large X-ray outburst in November 2004 with the high resolution transmission grating spectrometer on-board Chandra. In the low state X-ray emissivities indicate temperatures well above 25 MK. In the high state we find an extended emissivity distribution with high emissivities in the range from 3 MK to over 100 MK. The outburst event in stellar terms is one of the most powerful ever observed and the most energetic one in the ONC with a lower total energy limit of 1.5x10^37 ergs. The line diagnostics show that under the assumption that the line emitting regions in the low states are as close as within 1 -- 2 stellar radii from the O-star's photosphere, whereas the hard states suggest a distance of 3 -- 5 stellar radii. The two outbursts are very close to the periastron passage of the stars. We argue that the high X-ray states are possibly the result of reconnection events from magnetic interactions of the primary and secondary stars of the spectroscopic binary. Effects from wind collisions seem unlikely for this system. The low state emissivity and R-ratios strengthen the predicament that the X-ray emission is enhanced by magnetic confinement of the primary wind. Short-period binaries represent extreme cases in the generation of stellar coronae via a rotational dynamo. Such stars are important for probing the origin and nature of coronae in the regimes of rapid rotation and activity saturation. VW Cep (P=0.28 d) is a relatively bright, partially eclipsing, and very active object. Light curves made from Chandra/HETGS data show flaring and rotational modulation, but no eclipses. Velocity modulation of emission lines indicates that one component dominates the X-ray emission. The emission measure is highly structured, having three peaks. Helium-like triplet lines give electron densities of about 3.0E+10 - 18.0E+10 /cm^3. Using the Chandra/High Energy Transmission Grating Spectrometer (hereafter HETGS) we have detected Doppler motion of Capella's X-ray emission lines in the 6 -- 25AA wave-band. The observed motion follows the expected orbital motion of Capella's primary. This finding implies that the primary G8 III star, not the secondary G1 III star in the Hertzsprung gap, has been the dominant source of hot 10^{6.8} -- 10^{7}K plasma at least in the last six years. In addition, the results demonstrate the long-term stability of the HETGS and demonstrate small uncertainties of 25 and 33 km/s in the velocity determination with the HEG and MEG, respectively., Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures, accepted by Astrophysical Journal Letters

We analyze a Chandra-HETGS observation of the single G-type giant HR 9024. The high flux allows us to examine spectral line and continuum diagnostics at high temporal resolution, to derive plasma parameters (thermal distribution, abundances, temperature, ...). A time-dependent 1D hydrodynamic loop model with semi-length 10$^{12}$cm ($\sim R_{\star}$), and impulsive footpoint heating triggering the flare, satisfactorily reproduces the observed evolution of temperature and emission measure, derived from the analysis of the strong continuum emission. The observed characteristics of the flare appear to be common features in very large flares in active stars (also pre-main sequence stars), possibly indicating some fundamental physics for these very dynamic and extreme phenomena in stellar coronae., Comment: 2 pages, 4 figures. Details of the design, fabrication, ground and flight calibration of the High Energy Transmission Grating, HETG, on the Chandra X-ray Observatory are presented after five years of flight experience. Specifics include the theory of phased transmission gratings as applied to the HETG, the Rowland design of the spectrometer, details of the grating fabrication techniques, and the results of ground testing and calibration of the HETG. High resolution spectral studies were undertaken at orbital phases 0, 0.25 and 0.5 on the high-mass X-ray binary (HMXB) Vela X-1 using archival Chandra data. We present (a) the first detailed analysis of the multiple strong narrow emission lines present in phase 0.5 (b) an analysis of the absorption of the continuum in phase 0.5, and (c) the first detection of narrow emission and absorption lines in phase 0.25. Multiple fluorescent and H-and He-like emission lines in the band 1.6 - 20 Angstrom in eclipse are partially obscured at phase 0.25 by the X-ray continuum. The phase 0.25 spectrum displays 3 triplets, 2 with a blue-shifted resonance (r) line in absorption and the intercombination (i) and forbidden (f) lines in emission, and shows in absorption other blue-shifted lines seen in emission in eclipse. At phase 0.5 the soft X-ray continuum diminishes revealing an "eclipse-like" spectrum, however line flux values are around 13-fold those in eclipse. We conclude the narrow emission lines in Vela X-1 become apparent when the continuum is blocked from line of sight, either by eclipse or by scattering and/or absorption from a wake or cloud. The H-and He-like lines arise in warm photoionised regions in the stellar wind, while the fluorescent lines (including a Ni K alpha line) are produced in cooler clumps of gas outside these regions. Absorption of the 5-13 Angstrom continuum at phase 0.5 may be caused by an accretion wake comprised of dense stagnant photoionized plasma inside a Stromgren zone. The Chandra X-ray Observatory grating spectrometers allow study of stellar spectra at resolutions on the order of 1000. Prior x-ray observatories' low resolution data have shown that nearly all classes of stars emit x-rays. Chandra reveals details of line and continuum contributions to the spectra which can be interpreted through application of plasma models based on atomic databases. For cool stars with hot coronae interpreted in the Solar paradigm, assumption of collisional ionization equilibrium allows derivation of temperature distributions and elemental abundances. Densities can be derived from He-like ion's metastable transition lines. Abundance trends are unlike the Sun, as are the very hot temperature distributions. For young stars, there is evidence of accretion driven x-ray emission, rather than magnetically confined plasma emission. For some hot stars, the expected emission mechanism of shocked winds has been challenged; there is now evidence for magnetically confined thermal plasmas. We present high-resolution X-ray spectra of the multiple (hierarchical quadruple) weak-lined T Tauri star system HD 98800, obtained with the High Energy Transmission Gratings Spectrograph (HETGS) aboard the Chandra X-ray Observatory (CXO). In the zeroth-order CXO/HETGS X-ray image, both principle binary components of HD 98800 (A and B, separation 0.8'') are detected; component A was observed to flare during the observation. The infrared excess (dust disk) component, HD 98800B, is a factor ~4 fainter in X-rays than the apparently ``diskless'' HD 98800A, in quiescence. The line ratios of He-like species (e.g., Ne IX, O VII) in the HD 98800A spectrum indicate that the X-ray-emitting plasma around HD 98800 is in a typical coronal density regime (log n <~ 11). We conclude that the dominant X-ray-emitting component(s) of HD 98800 is (are) coronally active. The sharp spectral differences between HD 98800 and the classical T Tauri star TW Hya demonstrate the potential utility of high-resolution X-ray spectroscopy in providing diagnostics of pre-main sequence accretion processes., Comment: 11 pages, 5 figures; to appear in the Astrophysical Journal (Letters)

Spectroscopy with the Chandra High Energy Transmission Grating Spectrometer provides details on X-ray emission and activity from young and cool stars through resolution of emission lines from a variety of ions. We are beginning to see trends in activity regarding abundances, emission measures, and variability. Here we contrast spectra of TV Crt, a weak-lined T Tauri star, with TW Hya, a Classical T Tauri star. TV Crt has a spectrum more like magnetic activity driven coronae, relative to the TW Hya spectrum, which we have interpreted as due to accretion-produced X-rays. We have also observed the long period system, IM Pegasi to search for rotational modulation, and to compare activity in a long period active binary to shorter period systems and to the pre-main sequence stars. We observed the coronally active eclipsing binary, AR Lac, with the High Energy Transmission Grating on Chandra for a total of 97 ks, spaced over five orbits, at quadratures and conjunctions. Contemporaneous and simultaneous EUV spectra and photometry were also obtained with the Extreme Ultraviolet Explorer. Significant variability in both X-ray and EUV fluxes were observed, dominated by at least one X-ray flare and one EUV flare. We saw no evidence of primary or secondary eclipses. X-ray flux modulation was largest at high temperature, indicative of flare heating of coronal plasma. Line widths interpreted in terms of Doppler broadening suggest that both binary stellar components are active. From line fluxes obtained from total integrated spectra, we have modeled the emission measure and abundance distributions. A strong maximum was found in the differential emission measure, characterized by peaks at log T = 6.9 and 7.4, together with a weak but significant cooler maximum near log T=6.2, and a moderately strong hot tail from log T= 7.6-8.2. Coronal abundances have a broad distribution and show no simple correlation with first ionization potential. While the resulting model spectrum generally agrees very well with the observed spectrum, there are some significant discrepancies, especially among the many Fe L-lines. Both the emission measure and abundance distributions are qualitatively similar to prior determinations from other X-ray and ultraviolet spectra, indicating some long-term stability in the overall coronal structure., Comment: 31 pages, 8 figures, 3 tables; Accepted for publication in the Astrophysical Journal (tentatively October 1, 2003)

We present high resolution X-ray spectra of the X-ray bright classical T Tauri star, TW Hydrae, covering the wavelength range of 1.5-25 AA. The differential emission measure derived from fluxes of temperature-sensitive emission lines shows a plasma with a sharply peaked temperature distribution, peaking at log T = 6.5. Abundance anomalies are apparent, with iron very deficient relative to oxygen, while neon is enhanced relative to oxygen. Density-sensitive line ratios of Ne IX and O VII indicate densities near log n_e = 13. A flare with rapid (~1 ks) rise time was detected during our 48 ksec observation; however, based on analysis of the emission-line spectrum during quiescent and flaring states, the derived plasma parameters do not appear strongly time-dependent. The inferred plasma temperature distribution and densities are consistent with a model in which the bulk of the X-ray emission from TW Hya is generated via mass accretion from its circumstellar disk. Assuming accretion powers the X-ray emission, our results for log n_e suggest an accretion rate of ~10^{-8} M_sun yr^{-1}., Comment: 14 pages, 6 figures; to appear in the Astrophysical Journal, March 1, 2002

We observed AR Lac, an eclipsing RS CVn binary star, with the Chandra High Energy Grating Spectrometer for a total of 100 ks divided into six intervals covering both quadratures and eclipses. We repeated observations at each phase. At least two flares were seen, in which the flux increased by factors of two and four. The flares occurred near eclipse phases and compromised detection of eclipse modulation. The quadrature fluxes were the most stable, but they also show non-repeating trends. Quadrature line profiles are broadened relative to eclipse profiles, presumably due to orbital velocity Doppler shifted emission from each binary component. The spectrum appears to be iron poor and neon rich, similar to HR 1099, but not as extreme as II Pegasi. We will examine line strengths, widths, and positions vs. phase, and present preliminary differential emission measure models and abundance determinations using the APED emissivity database. We have obtained high resolution X-ray spectra of the coronally active binary, II Pegasi (HD 224085), covering the wavelength range of 1.5-25 Angstroms. For the first half of our 44 ksec observation, the source was in a quiescent state with constant X-ray flux, after which it flared, reaching twice the quiescent flux in 12 ksec, then decreasing. We analyze the emission-line spectrum and continuum during quiescent and flaring states. The differential emission measure derived from lines fluxes shows a hot corona with a continuous distribution in temperature. During the non-flare state, the distribution peaks near log T = 7.2, and when flaring, near 7.6. High-temperature lines are enhanced slightly during the flare, but most of the change occurs in the continuum. Coronal abundance anomalies are apparent, with iron very deficient relative to oxygen and significantly weaker than expected from photospheric measurements, while neon is enhanced relative to oxygen. We find no evidence of appreciable resonant scattering optical depth in line ratios of iron and oxygen. The flare light curve is consistent with Solar two-ribbon flare models, but with a very long reconnection time-constant of about 65 ks. We infer loop lengths of about 0.05 stellar radii, to about 0.25 in the flare, if the flare emission originated from a single, low-density loop., Comment: 25 pages, 5 figures, 3 tables, accepted by ApJ (scheduled for the v559 n2 p1 Oct 1, 2001 issue)

We present ASCA and ROSAT X-ray observations of the classical T Tauri star TW Hya, the namesake of a small association that, at a distance of ~ 50 pc, represents the nearest known region of recent star formation. Analysis of ASCA and ROSAT spectra indicates characteristic temperatures of ~ 1.7 MK and ~ 9.7 MK for the X-ray emitting region(s) of TW Hya, with emission lines of highly ionized Fe dominating the spectrum at energies ~1 keV. The X-ray data show variations in X-ray flux on <~ 1 hr timescales as well as indications of changes in X-ray absorbing column on timescales of several years, suggesting that flares and variable obscuration are responsible for the large amplitude optical variability of TW Hya on short and long timescales, respectively. The ASCA spectra of TW Hya, which is ~ 20 Myr old, has a mass of ~ 0.7 M_sun, and is surrounded by a dusty circumstellar disk, offer perhaps the best indication yet of the X-ray spectrum of the young Sun during the epoch of Jovian planet building. Comparison with model calculations suggests that TW Hya produces sufficient hard X-ray flux to produce significant ionization of molecular gas within its circumstellar disk; such X-ray ionization may regulate both protoplanetary accretion and protoplanetary chemistry.
