3. Innovative Entrepreneurship: a Source of Economic Growth in the Region

Abstract

This article presents the findings of the study on the role of innovative entrepreneurship in the regional economy. The analysis is based on the methodology developed by Hermann Simon, a German scientist who has coined the term ”hidden champions” describing the phenomenon of little-known successful companies that act as innovative growth engines in the German economy. Today, the economies in different countries are developing amid the ”new normal,” in which no expected recovery followed the global crisis of 2008. This makes it necessary to rethink the role of entrepreneurship during a prolonged recession. The authors proposed and tested the hypothesis that, in this environment, the economic growth in the country and the region is increasingly determined not so much by large businesses, but by many small innovative companies. To identify Russian ”hidden champions,” we studied more than 1247 companies listed in the Innovation and Investment Market, a specialized section of the Moscow Exchange, and included in the specialized Register of Business Entities that use nanotechnology. We identified specifically Russian features of innovative entrepreneurship related to national cultural and historical characteristics and the current policy of import substitution. The authors proposed their own method for assessing the innovative entrepreneurship as a source of economic growth in the Russian regions that defines five groups of innovative entrepreneurs (global market leader, one of the global market leaders, Russian market leader, one of the Russian market leaders, not the leader in the Russian market) and compares them with large companies in terms of turnover and profit dynamics. Based on such criteria as ”number of ”hidden champions” and ”number of large enterprises per 100 thousand organizations,” we built a model for the ratio of ”hidden champions” to major companies in the Russian regions that identifies, for each criterion, three subgroups, including leaders, medium-tier and outsiders, which allowed to identify nine types of Russian regions and substantiate different development strategies for main types of regions. The study confirms that the most justified strategy for the development of innovative entrepreneurship in the region is the strategy of cooperation between different types of companies in order to overcome their weaknesses, enhance existing opportunities and activate the innovation and entrepreneurial capacity.

4. Non-reciprocal hidden degrees of freedom: A unifying perspective on memory, feedback, and activity

Abstract

We show that memory, feedback, and activity are all describable by the same unifying concept, that is non-reciprocal (NR) coupling. We demonstrate that characteristic thermodynamic features of these intrinsically nonequilibrium systems are reproduced by low-dimensional Markovian networks with NR coupling, which we establish as minimal models for such complex systems. NR coupling alone implies a violation of the fluctuation-dissipation relation, which is inevitably connected to entropy production, i.e., irreversibility. Hiding the NR coupled degrees of freedom renders non-Markovian, one-variable Langevin descriptions with complex types of memory, for which we find a generalized second law involving information flow. We demonstrate that non-monotonic memory is inextricably linked to NR coupling. Furthermore, we discuss discrete time delay as the infinite-dimensional limit, and find a divergent entropy production, corresponding to unbounded cost for precisely storing a Brownian trajectory.

5. Transient Kinetic Investigation of Chain Growth and the Accumulation of Surface Carbon During CO Hydrogenation on Cobalt Catalysts.

Abstract

CO hydrogenation is a promising approach for the storage of renewable energy in the form of hydrocarbons via the Fischer–Tropsch synthesis (FTS). Since transient operation of FTS reactors might be necessary and even be beneficial, transient kinetics for a rational catalyst and reactor design are essential. In order to advance the development of such transient kinetics, the periodic transient kinetics (PTK) method was applied to the CO hydrogenation on a Co/TiO2 catalyst under FT‐like conditions. It was revealed that there are two carbon species of different reactivity, Cα and Cβ, present on the catalyst surface during the reaction. Cα forms fast, within a few seconds, and is highly reactive. Whereas Cβ forms slowly, is accumulating on the surface over a longer time, and imposes an inhibiting effect. The results indicate an important role of the Cβ species to chain growth and the formation of C2+ products. Finally, the transient experimental results were evaluated based on a material balance and the amounts of Cα and Cβ present on the catalyst surface during the reaction were determined. 11. Hidden Champions and the Development of Regions

Abstract

Global market leadership is most often associated with large corporations. But in reality, there are thousands of medium-sized global market leaders who are hardly known, the so-called Hidden Champions. This is simply because the number of niche markets is far greater than the number of large markets. Hidden champions are more likely to be located in rural locations than in large cities and in this respect gain outstanding importance for the development of regions. Using the example of German hidden champions, the article shows why these companies are successful and what role their regional roots play. They make decisive contributions to the development of their home regions, not only in terms of economic power and jobs, but also for culture, education and infrastructure. The hidden champions concept can serve as a model for regional development and decentralization of the economy for many countries. This is particularly true for emerging countries, which should seek their future not in a few large corporations, but in numerous internationally competitive SMEs.

Abstract

In the 1970s, marketing science in Germany was limited to the German-speaking world. My early appeal to publish in English and to change the language of German journals to English met with strong opposition from established professors. Today, 40 years later, a considerable number of German-speaking marketing scientists belong to the international top group in the Hirsch-index ranking. German journals are now publishing in English, but the transition came late, and it will be difficult to acquire A-journal status. In terms of inbound internationalization a lot remains to be done.

Abstract

Electrochemical AFM is a powerful tool for the real‐space characterization of catalysts under realistic electrochemical CO2 reduction (CO2RR) conditions. The evolution of structural features ranging from the micrometer to the atomic scale could be resolved during CO2RR. Using Cu(100) as model surface, distinct nanoscale surface morphologies and their potential‐dependent transformations from granular to smoothly curved mound‐pit surfaces or structures with rectangular terraces are revealed during CO2RR in 0.1 m KHCO3. The density of undercoordinated copper sites during CO2RR is shown to increase with decreasing potential. In situ atomic‐scale imaging reveals specific adsorption occurring at distinct cathodic potentials impacting the observed catalyst structure. These results show the complex interrelation of the morphology, structure, defect density, applied potential, and electrolyte in copper CO2RR catalysts.
