The $^{26}$Al short-lived radioactive nuclide is the source of the observed galactic diffuse $\gamma$-ray emission at 1.8 MeV. While different sources of $^{26}$Al have been explored, such as AGB stars, massive stars winds, and supernovae, the contribution of very massive stars has never been studied. We study the stellar wind contribution of very massive stars, i.e stars with initial masses between 150 and 300 M$_\odot$, to the enrichment in $^{26}$Al of the galactic interstellar medium. We discuss the production of $^{26}$Al by studying rotating and non-rotating very massive stellar models with initial masses between 150 and 300 M$_\odot$ for metallicities Z=0.006, 0.014, and 0.020. We confront this result to a simple Milky Way model taking into account both the metallicity and the star formation rate gradients. We obtain that very massive stars in the Z=0.006-0.020 metallicity range might be very significant contributors to the $^{26}$Al enrichment of the interstellar medium. Typically, the contribution of the winds of massive stars to the total quantity of $^{26}$Al in the Galaxy increases by 150\% when very massive stars are considered. Very massive stars, despite their rarity, might be important contributors to $^{26}$Al and overall very important actors for nucleosynthesis in the Galaxy., Comment: 10 pages, 6 figures

The evolution of the meteorite flux to the Earth can be studied by determining the terrestrial ages of meteorite collected in hot deserts. We have measured the terrestrial ages of 54 stony meteorites from the El M\'edano area, in the Atacama Desert, using the cosmogenic nuclide chlorine 36. With an average age of 710 ka, this collection is the oldest collection of non fossil meteorites at the Earth's surface. This allows both determining the average meteorite flux intensity over the last 2 Myr (222 meteorites larger than 10 g per km2 per Myr) and discussing its possible compositional variability over the Quaternary period. A change in the flux composition, with more abundant H chondrites, occurred between 0.5 and 1 Ma, possibly due to the direct delivery to Earth of a meteoroid swarm from the asteroid belt., Comment: accepted in Geology

The terrestrial planets and the asteroids dominant in the inner asteroid belt are water poor. However, in the protoplanetary disk the temperature should have decreased below water condensation level well before the disk was photoevaporated. Thus, the global water depletion of the inner Solar System is puzling. We show that, even if the inner disk becomes cold, there cannot be direct condensation of water. This is because the snowline moves towards the Sun more slowly than the gas itself. The appearance of ice in a range of heliocentric distances swept by the snowline can only be due to the radial drift of icy particles from the outer disk. However, if a sufficiently massive planet is present, the radial drift of particles is interrupted, because the disk acquires a superKeplerian rotation just outside of the planetary orbit. From this result, we propose that the precursor of Jupiter achieved about 20 Earth masses when the snowline was still around 3 AU. This effectively fossilized the snowline at that location. Although cooling, the disk inside of the Jovian orbit remained ice-depleted because the flow of icy particles from the outer system was intercepted by the planet. This scenario predicts that planetary systems without giant planets should be much more rich in water in their inner regions than our system. We also show that the inner edge of the planetesimal disk at 0.7AU, required in terrestrial planet formation models to explain the small mass of Mercury and the absence of planets inside of its orbit, could be due to the silicate condensation line, fossilized at the end of the phase of streaming instability that generated the planetesimal seeds. Thus, when the disk cooled, silicate particles started to drift inwards of 0.7AU without being sublimated, but they could not be accreted by any pre-existing planetesimals., Comment: In press in Icarus

The solar system started to form about 4.56 Gyr ago and despite the long intervening time span, there still exist several clues about its formation. The three major sources for this information are meteorites, the present solar system structure and the planet-forming systems around young stars. In this introduction we give an overview of the current understanding of the solar system formation from all these different research fields. This includes the question of the lifetime of the solar protoplanetary disc, the different stages of planet formation, their duration, and their relative importance. We consider whether meteorite evidence and observations of protoplanetary discs point in the same direction. This will tell us whether our solar system had a typical formation history or an exceptional one. There are also many indications that the solar system formed as part of a star cluster. Here we examine the types of cluster the Sun could have formed in, especially whether its stellar density was at any stage high enough to influence the properties of today's solar system. The likelihood of identifying siblings of the Sun is discussed. The radioactive isotope $^{60}$Fe ($T_{1/2} = 1.5 $ Myr) was present in the early solar system. It is unlikely that it was injected directly into the nascent solar system by a single, nearby supernova. It is proposed instead that it was inherited during the molecular cloud stage from several supernovae belonging to previous episodes of star formation. The expected abundance of $^{60}$Fe in star forming regions is estimated taking into account the stochasticity of the star-forming process, and it is showed that many molecular clouds are expected to contain $^{60}$Fe (and possibly $^{26}$Al [$T_{1/2} = 0.74 $ Myr]) at a level compatible with that of the nascent solar system. Gamma-ray production cross sections have been measured for gamma-ray lines copiously emitted in the $^3$He bombardment of $^{16}$O nuclei: the 937, 1042 and 1081 keV lines of $^{18}$F and the 1887 keV line of $^{18}$Ne. Four Ge detectors with BGO shielding for Compton suppression were used to measure the angular distributions of the gamma-rays. The excitation functions have been obtained for $^3$He bombarding energies from 3.7 to 36 MeV. Total cross sections are tabulated for calculations relevant to gamma-ray astronomy. The importance of these lines as diagnosis for the presence and properties of accelerated $^3$He in solar flares is discussed in light of the measured cross sections., Comment: Phys. Rev. We study the effect of long-range elastic interactions in the dynamical behavior of an elastic chain driven quasi-statically in a quenched random pinning potential and in the strong pinning limit. This is a generic situation occuring in solid friction, crack propagation, wetting front motion, ... Tuning the exponent of the algebraic decay of the elastic interaction with the distance is shown to give rise to three regimes: a Mean-Field (MF) regime, a Laplacian (L) regime and an intermediate regime where the critical exponents interpolate continuously between the MF and L limit cases. The Kaidun meteorite is different from all other meteorites [1], consisting largely of a mixture of “incompatible” types of meteoritic material – carbonaceous and enstatite chondrites, i.e. corre-sponding to the most oxidized and the most reduced samples of meteorite materials, including CI1, CM1-2, CV3, EH3-5, and EL3. In addition to these, minor amounts of ordinary and R chondrites are present. In addition, approximately half of the Kaidun lithologies are new materials not known as separate meteorites. Among these are aqueously altered enstatite chondrites [1], which are of considerable interest because they testify that not all reduced asteroids escaped late-stage oxidation, and hydrolysis, and also because hydrated poorly crystalline Si-Fe phase, which in turn is re-placed by serpentine (Figs 3-5). In the end the only indication of the original presence of metal is the re-sidual carbides. In other enstatite chondrite lithogies (of uncertain type) original silicates and metal have been thoroughly replaced by an assemblage of authi-genic plagioclase laths, calcite boxwork, and occasion-al residual grains of silica, Cr-rich troilite, ilmenite, and rare sulfides including heideite (Fig. 6). Fe and S have been largely leached from the rock (Fig. 4). Again the accessory phases are the first clue to the original character of the rock, which can be verified by O isotopes. It is fortunate that Kaidun displays every step of the alteration process.

The Nice model [1&2] describes a scenario whereby the Jovian planets experienced a violent reshuffling event approx.3:9 Ga the giant planets moved, existing small body reservoirs were depleted or eliminated, and new reservoirs were created in particular locations. The Nice model quantitatively explains the orbits of the Jovian planets and Neptune [1], the orbits of bodies in several different small body reservoirs in the outer solar system (e.g., Trojans of Jupiter [2], the Kuiper belt and scattered disk [3], the irregular satellites of the giant planets [4], and the late heavy bombardment on the terrestrial planets approx.3:9 Ga [5]. This model is unique in plausibly explaining all of these phenomena. One issue with the Nice model is that it predicts that transported Kuiper Belt Objects (KBOs) (things looking like D class asteroids) should predominate in the outer asteroid belt, but we know only about 10% of the objects in the outer main asteroid belt appear to be D-class objects [6]. However based upon collisional modeling, Bottke et al. [6] argue that more than 90% of the objects captured in the outer main belt could have been eliminated by impacts if they had been weakly-indurated objects. These disrupted objects should have left behind pieces in the ancient regoliths of other, presumably stronger asteroids. Thus, a derived prediction of the Nice model is that ancient regolith samples (regolith-bearing meteorites) should contain fragments of collisionally-destroyed Kuiper belt objects. In fact KBO pieces might be expected to be present in most ancient regolith- bearing meteorites [7&8].

carbonaceous chondrites are of the major interest since they contain one of the most primitive organic matters. However, aqueous alteration has more or less overprinted their original features in a way that needed to be assessed. That was done in the present study by comparing the mineralogy of the most altered CR1 chondrite, GRO 95577, to a less altered CR2, Renazzo. Their modal analyses were achieved thanks to a new method, based on X-ray elemental maps acquired on electron microprobe, and on IDL image treatment. It allowed the collection of new data on the composition of Renazzo and confirmed the classification of GRO 95577 as a CR1. New alteration products for CRs, vermiculite and clinochlore, were observed. The homogeneity of the Fe-poor clays in the CR1 and the distinctive matrix composition in the two chondrites suggest a wide-range of aqueous alteration on CRs. The preservation of the outlines of the chondrules in GRO 95577 and the elemental transfers of Al, Fe and Ca throughout the chondrule and of Fe and S from the matrix to the chondrule favor the idea of an asteroidal location of the aqueous alteration. From their mineralogical descriptions and modal abundances, the element repartitions in Renazzo and GRO 95577 were computed. It indicates a possible relationship between these two chondrites via an isochemical alteration process. Knowing the chemical reactions that occurred during the alteration, it was thus possible to decipher the mineralogical modal abundances in the unaltered CR body.

Micrometeorites with sizes below 1 mm are collected in a diversity of environments such as deep-sea sediments and polar caps. Chemical, mineralogical and isotopic studies indicate that micrometeorites are closely related to primitive carbonaceous chondrites that amount to only approximately 2% of meteorite falls. While thousands of micrometeorites have been studied in detail, no micrometeorite has been found so far with an unambiguous achondritic composition and texture. One melted cosmic spherule has a low Fe/Mn ratio similar to that of eucrites, the most common basaltic meteorite group. Here we report on the texture, mineralogy, Rare Earth Elements (REEs) abundance and oxygen isotopic composition of the unmelted Antarctic micrometeorite 99-21-40 that has an unambiguous basaltic origin.

The origin of the Antarctic micrometeorites (AMMs) is still a matter of debate. Their closest meteoritic counterparts are the C2 chondrites, but the match is not perfect, and the parent body(ies) of the AMMs is(are) still to be identified. Tagish Lake is a new meteorite fall which bears similarity with CI1 and CM2 chondrites, but is distinct from both. Based on the mineralogy of phyllosilicates, Noguchi et al. proposed that the phyllosilicate-rich AMMs and the Tagish Lake meteorites could derive from similar asteroids. The hydrogen isotopic compositions of extra-terrestrial samples can be used to get some insight on their origin. The D/H ratios of AMMs and of Tagish Lake have been measured, but using different analytical techniques. They are therefore not directly comparable. We performed additional hydrogen isotopic analyses of fragments of Tagish Lake using the same experimental setup previously used for the measurement of the hydrogen isotopic composition of AMMs. In this work, we could also analyze separately both lithologies of Tagish Lake (carbonate-poor and -rich). The distributions of delta D values measured in the two lithologies of Tagish Lake are very similar, indicating that fluids with similar hydrogen isotopic compositions altered the meteorite on the parent body for the two lithologies. Yet, the hydrogen isotopic composition of Tagish Lake is different from that of AMMs, suggesting that they do not derive from the same parent body.

We measured the oxygen isotopic composition of individual minerals in Tagish Lake. The relationship with carbonaceous chondrites is confirmed. We found very O-16 enriched olivines. The carbonates will require a dedicated study of their C and O isotopes. Additional information is contained in the original extended abstract.

Noble gas composition and mineralogy of Sayama meteorite, that fell in Japan and recently identified as a CM2 chondrite, revealed many unique features, indicating that it experienced extensive aqueous alteration under highly oxidized condition compared with typical CMs. Additional information is contained in the original extended abstract.

We have identified in Tagish Lake an abondant carbonate-poor lithology and a less common carbonate-rich lithology. Tagish Lake shows similarities and differences with CMs and CI1s. It is a unique carbonaceous chondrite recording specific aqueous alteration conditions. Additional information is contained in the original extended abstract.
