17. Employment and Training Needs in Texas Agribusiness.

Abstract

Because of the increasing interrelationships in the production, processing, and distribution of agricultural products, many persons require competencies gained through instructional programs of vocational agriculture. While it is not difficult to estimate the potential training requirements in the production sector alone, identification of occupations in allied industries is more complex. To make this determination, the Standard Terminology for Curriculum and Instruction in Local and State School Systems was used as standard reference to define such occupations. This was supplemented by the experience of Texas agricultural and agribusiness specialists who evaluated job titles used in classifying survey employment data from the 1970 Census of Population. Agricultural and related employment was grouped by the following criteria: Group 1--agricultural or related competencies in industry, and Group 2--selected industries or occupations in which only a portion of the work requires agriculture or related competencies. Recommendations for additional training by the Texas labor force in the fields of production agriculture, land economics and real estate, gardeners and groundskeepers are proposed. Abstract

Critical knowledge gaps about environmental fate and unintentional effects of currently used pesticides (CUPs) hamper the understanding and mitigation of their global impacts on ecological processes. We investigated the exposure of earthworms to 31 multiclass CUPs in an arable landscape in France. We highlighted the presence of at least one pesticide in all soils (n=180) and 92% of earthworms (n=155) both in treated crops and nontreated habitats (hedgerows, grasslands, and cereals under organic farming). Mixtures of at least one insecticide, one herbicide, and one fungicide (> limit of quantification) contaminated 90% of soils and 54% of earthworms at levels that could endanger these nontarget beneficial soil organisms. A high risk of chronic toxicity to earthworms was found (46% of samples) both in treated winter cereals and nontreated habitats considered as refuges. This may alter biodiversity, hinder recovery, and impair ecosystem functions. These results provide essential insights for sustainable agriculture and CUP regulation, and highlight the potential of pesticides as agents of global change.

Abstract

Metallic spinel-type CuCo$_{2}$S$_{4}$ nanoparticles were deposited on nanocrystalline TiO$_{2}$ (P25®), forming heterostructure nanocomposites. The nanocomposites were characterized in detail by X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), nitrogen sorption (BET) and UV/Vis spectroscopy. Variation of the CuCo$_{2}$S$_{4}$:TiO$_{2}$ ratio to an optimum value generated a catalyst which shows a very high photocatalytic H$_{2}$ production rate at neutral pH of 32.3 µmol/h (0.72 mLh$^{–1}$), which is much larger than for pure TiO$_{2}$ (traces of H$_{2}$). The catalyst exhibits an extraordinary long-term stability and after 70 h irradiation time about 2 mmol H$_{2}$ were generated. An increased light absorption and an efficient charge separation for the sample with the optimal CuCo$_{2}$S$_{4}$:TiO$_{2}$ ratio is most probably responsible for the high catalytic activity.
