We report the results of the implementation of two vertical mini-beta and horizontally focussing optics at the Diamond light source, the first in August 2010 and the second in March 2011. Commissioning results of the two optics changes and the experimental characterization of the optics are compared with the expected performance and theoretical modelling. Diamond is a 3 GeV low emittance third generation light source recently commissioned in Oxfordshire, UK. During Phase I of the project, seven insertion devices (IDs) have been installed and commissioned: these include 5 in-vacuum permanent magnet undulators, a variable polarization APPLE-II helical device (HU64) and a superconducting wiggler (SCW). We present our experiences commissioning these devices and the results of the investigations of their effects on beam dynamics, including orbit distortion, linear tune shifts, beta-beating and beam lifetime. Alpha-matching with local and global tune compensations, as well as the LOCO algorithm, have been used to compensate the linear optic perturbations. The results are discussed and compared with theoretical predictions. Injection with IDs in operation has also been investigated in view of future top-up operation.

Diamond Light Source is investigating the possibility of increasing the storage ring operating current above the nominal 300 mA. A campaign of measurements and simulations has been carried out in order to understand the extent of the parasitic energy loss and characterise the most important items which build up the machine impedance. In this paper we report on the most recent measurements of the longitudinal loss factor and the present status of the impedance database with an initial comparison between the two. Using a model of the Diamond storage ring which includes displacements and rotationsof the 74 magnet girders an attempt has been made to correlate survey data with thecorrector magnet (CM) strengths required for a zero orbit. We then use the model to deducethe most effective girder movements that will bring about a reduction in corrector strength. We describe the results of these studies, and suggest a test with a deliberatelydisplaced girder and the effect on corrector strengths, aimed at enhancing ourunderstanding of the system. Diamond was commissioned at 3 GeV with seven insertion devices (IDs) already installed. The Phase I IDs include five in-vacuum (IV) pure permanent magnet (ppm) undulators, an APPLE-II variable polarization device, and a superconducting wiggler [1]. Since initial commissioning of the ring, four more in-vacuum undulators have been installed, and another three devices will be installed in the coming year. In this paper, we describe commissioning, characterizing, and operating with these IDs.
