1. Examination of the Bystander Intervention Model among Middle School Students: A Preliminary Study

Abstract

Researchers have utilized the Bystander Intervention Model to conceptualize bullying bystander behavior. The five-step model includes Notice the Event, Interpret the Event as an Emergency, Accept Responsibility, Know How to Act, and Decision to Intervene. The purpose of this study was to examine outcomes of an evidence-based bystander training within the context of the Bystander Intervention Model among middle school students (N = 79). We used a quasi-experimental design to examine differences in outcomes between bystanders and non-bystanders. We also assessed which of the steps were uniquely associated with post-training defending behavior. Results indicated a significant increase in Know How to Act for both groups. In contrast, we found increases in Notice the Event, Decision to Intervene, and defending behavior among bystanders only. Finally, Notice the Event and Decision to Intervene were uniquely associated with post-training defending behavior. We discuss implications of these findings for counselors.

7. Testing the persuasiveness of meme based arguments by analogy

Abstract

Psychologists have noted that analogical reasoning is pervasive in argumentation (Kuhn, 1992; Holyoak, 1997), but the forms these arguments can take varies substantially. Memes are one common format or argument-by-analogy. Memes are widely recognized images or templates that compares two situations to each other for the purpose of making some (often questionable) point. Even though memes-as-arguments are readily visible on social media, the persuasiveness of this category of argument-by-analogy---and specifically the features that predict their persuasiveness---have not been established. This study investigates whether and in what ways arguments by analogy, delivered in the form of a meme, are persuasive. We develop a large set of memes representing common meme structures, political leaning, and familiarity and examined how these factors predict a meme's perceived clarity, persuasiveness, and memorability, along with these memes effects on beliefs about issues such as climate change, immigration, and racism.

Abstract

Objective Real-life management of patients with hypertension and chronic kidney disease (CKD) among European Society of Hypertension Excellence Centres (ESH-ECs) is unclear : we aimed to investigate it. Methods A survey was conducted in 2023. The questionnaire contained 64 questions asking ESH-ECs representatives to estimate how patients with CKD are managed. Results Overall, 88 ESH-ECS representatives from 27 countries participated. According to the responders, renin-angiotensin system (RAS) blockers, calcium-channel blockers and thiazides were often added when these medications were lacking in CKD patients, but physicians were more prone to initiate RAS blockers (90% [interquartile range: 70–95%]) than MRA (20% [10–30%]), SGLT2i (30% [20–50%]) or (GLP1-RA (10% [5–15%]). Despite treatment optimisation, 30% of responders indicated that hypertension remained uncontrolled (30% (15–40%) vs 18% [10%–25%]) in CKD and CKD patients, respectively). Hyperkalemia was the most frequent barrier to initiate RAS blockers, and dosage reduction was considered in 45% of responders when kalaemia was 5.5–5.9 mmol/L. Conclusions RAS blockers are initiated in most ESH-ECS in CKD patients, but MRA and SGLT2i initiations are less frequent. Hyperkalemia was the main barrier for initiation or adequate dosing of RAS blockade, and RAS blockers’ dosage reduction was the usual management.

10. Development of a Teacher Module for a Brief, Bystander Bullying Intervention for Middle Schools: Perspectives from School Personnel

Abstract

Bullying is a significant problem in the USA, with both school bullying and cyberbullying peaking in middle school. Although 80% of students witness bullying, only half of middle school students report bullying to their teachers. Bystander training is effective in teaching students how to intervene; however, teachers play an instrumental role in shaping bystander behavior. The purpose of this qualitative study was to understand the perspectives of middle school personnel on the content, usefulness, relevance, and feasibility of a teacher training designed as a companion module to a brief, bullying bystander intervention (STAC). School personnel (N = 15) recruited from two schools participated in focus groups to provide feedback on the STAC Teacher Module. Thematic analyses elicited eight key themes. Participants provided specific feedback on ways the program could be improved, including providing more information about cyberbullying. Overall, participants liked the content of the training, but shared they would like built-in discussion time. Participants also indicated the program was useful, relevant, and feasible for middle schools in their communities. Participants indicated their current school offerings are limited and that there is a need for bullying-specific training. Participants also identified implementation challenges, including limited time and financial resources, as well as the need for teacher buy-in. Finally, participants reported liking the flexibility of a technology-based program, but expressed concerns that it would be harder to engage teachers in an online format. This study serves as a first step in developing the STAC Teacher Module for middle schools.

Abstract

Collocations are semi-productive word combinations with one word used literally and one other figuratively, characterized by an arbitrary restriction on substitution (kill hope, #murder hope). They are notoriously difficult for L2 speakers to acquire, yet there is no processing model specific to collocations. The present study attempts to explain trends in L2 collocational processing as memory retrieval. Modifying MINERVA2, a frequency-based memory model, we simulate reaction times and compare them to data from 99 L1 and 230 L2 (L1 Portuguese) English speakers involving free combinations (eat cake, ‘comer bolos’), congruent (read minds, ‘ler mentes’) and incongruent collocations (kick habits, no equivalent translation in Portuguese), and nonsense baselines (#read cakes). Under the assumptions that the L2 lexicon develops conditioned on the L1 and that the L2 lexicon is sensitive to L1 frequencies, we report that MINERVA2 can predict processing trends in both L1 and L2 collocational processing.

15. Narcissism in the context of stress: the influence of learned information on attitudes and stress outcomes

Abstract

Previous research indicates narcissism can aid stress management. Nonetheless, its common perception and dissemination as socially aversive may hamper its acknowledgment and use as an asset in the context of stress. This experimental study investigated the effects of receiving positive or negative information (i.e., prompts) about narcissism in the context of stress on attitudes towards this trait's association with stress. It also assessed individuals' experiences of narcissism's stress-coping properties when one believes themselves to be a high narcissism scorer, via an online survey. Hundred and five adults ( [Formula omitted] = 32.0; 22-64 years) completed measures of state-stress, music preferences, and narcissism. They were then randomly assigned to either the positive or negative prompt groups, being shown information highlighting the positive or negative impact of narcissism on stress management, respectively. Participants were then informed they scored above average on narcissism, despite their actual questionnaire scores, and undertook a stress-inducing procedure. Self-reported stress, implicit and explicit attitudes were measured pre- and post-prompt presentation. Results showed that, while prompts did not influence attitudes nor stress outcomes, individuals displayed neutral implicit attitudes towards narcissism's association with stress across measurement timepoints. These findings suggest that people's attitudes towards narcissism in the context of stress have not been deteriorated by this trait's predominant negative depiction outside this context. 17. Learning Relational Rules from Rewards

Abstract

Humans perceive the world in terms of objects and relations between them. In fact, for any given pair of objects, there is a myriad of relations that apply to them. How does the cognitive system learn which relations are useful to characterize the task at hand? And how can it use these representations to build a relational policy to interact effectively with the environment? In this paper we propose that this problem can be understood through the lens of a sub-field of symbolic machine learning called relational reinforcement learning (RRL). To demonstrate the potential of our approach, we build a simple model of relational policy learning based on a function approximator developed in RRL. We trained and tested our model in three Atari games that required to consider an increasingly number of potential relations: Breakout, Pong and Demon Attack. In each game, our model was able to select adequate relational representations and build a relational policy incrementally. We discuss the relationship between our model with models of relational and analogical reasoning, as well as its limitations and future directions of research.

19. Witnessing Cyberbullying and Suicidal Ideation among Middle School Students

Abstract

Suicide is a significant public health concern school-aged youth. Although a growing body of literature has documented the association between cyberbullying and suicidal ideation, and the mediating effect of internalizing symptoms, there is no research to date examining the impact of witnessing cyberbullying and suicidal ideation. To address this gap, we conducted a cross-sectional study with middle school students (N = 130). Students completed questionnaires assessing witnessing cyberbullying, witnessing school bullying, depression, anxiety, and suicidal ideation. We used structural equation modeling to test a mediational model in which we hypothesized internalizing symptoms would mediate the unique relationship between witnessing cyberbullying and suicidal ideation (i.e., controlling for witnessing school bullying). Results supported the mediational model, indicating the frequency of witnessing cyberbullying was positively related to internalizing symptoms, which in turn were related to higher levels of suicidal ideation. Findings suggest the importance of providing programs to support middle school students who witness cyberbullying to reduce the mental health risks (i.e., internalizing symptoms and suicidal ideation) associated with being a cyberbullying bystander.

Abstract

We consider the combinatorial problem where $p$ players aim to a complete set of $N$ different types of items (species) which are uniformly distributed. Let the random variables $T_{N(i)},\,\,i=1,2,\cdots,p$ denoting the number of trials needed until all $N$ types are detected (at least once), respectively for each player. This paper studies the impact of the number $p$ in the asymptotics of the expectation, the second moment, and the variance of the random variable \begin{equation*} M_{N(p)}: = \bigwedge_{i=1}^p T_{N(i)},\,\,\,\,\,\,N\rightarrow \infty. \end{equation*} The main ingredient in the expression of these quantittes are sums involving the Stirling numbers of the second kind; for which the asymptotics are explored. At the end of the paper we conjecture on a remarkable \textit{combinatorial identity}, regarding alternating binomial sums. These sums have been studied (mainly) by P. Flajolet due to their applications to digital search trees and quadtrees.

22. Gender Differences in Defending Behavior among Elementary School Students Trained in a Bullying Bystander Program: Is Self-Esteem a Moderator?

Abstract

This study evaluated the relationship among use defending behaviors, gender, and self-esteem among students trained in a brief, bystander bullying intervention (N = 93). Students were taught four specific strategies to use to defend targets of bullying. We used hierarchical regression analyses to test a moderator model in which we hypothesized females would report using defending behaviors more frequently than males post-training and that baseline self-esteem would moderate this relationship. Findings partially supported our hypotheses. Specifically, for "Turning it Over" (i.e., reporting bullying to an adult) and "Coaching Compassion" (i.e., gently confronting the perpetrator to communicate their behavior is not acceptable), the gender x self-esteem interaction was significant, suggesting that females with high self-esteem were most likely to use these defending behaviors post-training. In contrast, for "Stealing the Show" (i.e., using their sense of humor to distract the peer audience's attention away from the target), high self-esteem was positively associated with frequency of using this defending behavior for both males and females. For "Accompanying Others" (i.e., reaching out to the target to offer support), females used this strategy more frequently than males, and self-esteem was not a significant moderator. Findings highlight the importance of gender and self-esteem as significant factors that influence whether or not bystanders defend targets of bullying post-training. Implications for bystander training in school-based bullying prevention programs are discussed.

Background: Incidence of disability secondary to Parkinson’s disease is increasing faster globally than any other neurological condition. The diverse appearance of symptomatology associated with Parkinson’s, and the degenerative nature and subsequent functional decline, often increase dependence on caregivers for assistance with daily living, most commonly within a care home setting. Yet, primary literature and evidence synthesis surrounding these unique and complex care needs, challenges and the lived experiences of this population living in long-term nursing or residential facilities remains sparce. The aim of this review is to synthesize qualitative literature about the lived experience of people with Parkinson’s disease living in care home settings. Methods: A systematic search of the literature was conducted in October 2023 across six different databases (CINAHL, Medline, EMBASE, PsycINFO, Scopus and Cochrane Library). The Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analysis (PRISMA) was used to guide this review. Results: Five articles met the inclusion criteria. Four themes were identified following evidence synthesis: (1) Unique pharmacological challenges. (2) Transitioning and adapting to care home life and routines. (3) Dignified care within care homes. (4) Multidisciplinary care vacuum in care homes. Conclusion: This review revealed the significant and unique challenges for people with Parkinson’s disease when transitioning into care homes. These are exacerbated by wider social care challenges such as staffing levels, skill mixes and attitudes as well as a lack of disease-specific knowledge surrounding symptomatology and pharmacology. The lack of multi-disciplinary working and risk-adverse practice inhibited person-centred care and autonomy and reduced the quality of life of people living with Parkinson’s disease in care homes. Recommendations for practice highlight training gaps, the need for consistent and improved interdisciplinary working and better person-centred assessment and care delivery.

29. Towards a Model of Visual Reasoning

Abstract

Many tasks that are easy for humans are difficult for machines. Particularly, while humans excel at tasks that require generalising across problems, machine systems notably struggle. One such task is the Synthetic Visual Reasoning Test (SVRT). The SVRT consists of a range of problems where simple visual stimuli must be categorised into one of two categories based on an unknown rule that must be induced. Conventional machine learning approaches perform well only when trained to categorise based on a single rule and are unable to generalise without extensive additional training to tasks with any additional rules. Multiple theories of higher-level cognition posit that humans solve such tasks using structured relational representations. Specifically, people learn rules based on structured representations that generalise to novel instances quickly and easily. We believe it is possible to model this approach in a single system which learns all the required relational representations from scratch and performs tasks such as SVRT in a single run. Here, we present a system which expands the DORA/LISA architecture and augments the existing model with principally novel components, namely a) visual reasoning based on the established theories of recognition by components; b) the process of learning complex relational representations by synthesis (in addition to learning by analysis). The proposed augmented model matches human behaviour on SVRT problems. Moreover, the proposed system stands as a more realistic account of human cognition, wherein rather than using tools that have been shown successful in the machine learning field to inform psychological theorising, we use established psychological theories to inform developing a machine system.

Abstract

Recent research has focused on assessing either event- or time-based prospective memory (PM) using laboratory tasks. Yet, the findings pertaining to PM performance on laboratory tasks are often inconsistent with the findings on corresponding naturalistic experiments. Ecologically valid neuropsychological tasks resemble the complexity and cognitive demands of everyday tasks, offer an adequate level of experimental control, and allow a generalisation of the findings to everyday performance. The Virtual Reality Everyday Assessment Lab (VR-EAL), an immersive virtual reality neuropsychological battery with enhanced ecological validity, was implemented to comprehensively assess everyday PM (i.e., focal and non-focal event-based, and time-based). The effects of the length of delay between encoding and initiating the PM intention and the type of PM task on everyday PM performance were examined. The results revealed that everyday PM performance was affected by the length of delay rather than the type of PM task. The effect of the length of delay differentially affected performance on the focal, non-focal, and time-based tasks and was proportional to the PM cue focality (i.e., semantic relationship with the intended action). This study also highlighted methodological considerations such as the differentiation between functioning and ability, distinction of cue attributes, and the necessity of ecological validity., Comment: 9 Figures, 4 Tables

Abstract

Virtual reality (VR) head-mounted displays (HMD) appear to be effective research tools, which may address the problem of ecological validity in neuropsychological testing. However, their widespread implementation is hindered by VR induced symptoms and effects (VRISE) and the lack of skills in VR software development. This study offers guidelines for the development of VR software in cognitive neuroscience and neuropsychology, by describing and discussing the stages of the development of Virtual Reality Everyday Assessment Lab (VR-EAL), the first neuropsychological battery in immersive VR. Techniques for evaluating cognitive functions within a realistic storyline are discussed. The utility of various assets in Unity, software development kits, and other software are described so that cognitive scientists can overcome challenges pertinent to VRISE and the quality of the VR software. In addition, this pilot study attempts to evaluate VR-EAL in accordance with the necessary criteria for VR software for research purposes. The VR neuroscience questionnaire (VRNQ; Kourtesis et al., 2019b) was implemented to appraise the quality of the three versions of VR-EAL in terms of user experience, game mechanics, in-game assistance, and VRISE. Twenty-five participants aged between 20 and 45 years with 12-16 years of full-time education evaluated various versions of VR-EAL. The final version of VR-EAL achieved high scores in every sub-score of the VRNQ and exceeded its parsimonious cut-offs. It also appeared to have better in-game assistance and game mechanics, while its improved graphics substantially increased the quality of the user experience and almost eradicated VRISE. Abstract

Research suggests that the duration of a VR session modulates the presence and intensity of VRISE, but there are no suggestions regarding the appropriate maximum duration of VR sessions. The implementation of high-end VR HMDs in conjunction with ergonomic VR software seems to mitigate the presence of VRISE substantially. However, a brief tool does not currently exist to appraise and report both the quality of software features and VRISE intensity quantitatively. The VRNQ was developed to assess the quality of VR software in terms of user experience, game mechanics, in-game assistance, and VRISE. Forty participants aged between 28 and 43 years were recruited (18 gamers and 22 non-gamers) for the study. They participated in 3 different VR sessions until they felt weary or discomfort and subsequently filled in the VRNQ. Our results demonstrated that VRNQ is a valid tool for assessing VR software as it has good convergent, discriminant, and construct validity. The maximum duration of VR sessions should be between 55-70 minutes when the VR software meets or exceeds the parsimonious cut-offs of the VRNQ and the users are familiarized with the VR system. Also. the gaming experience does not seem to affect how long VR sessions should last. Also, while the quality of VR software substantially modulates the maximum duration of VR sessions, age and education do not. Finally, deeper immersion, better quality of graphics and sound, and more helpful in-game instructions and prompts were found to reduce VRISE intensity. The VRNQ facilitates the brief assessment and reporting of the quality of VR software features and/or the intensity of VRISE, while its minimum and parsimonious cut-offs may appraise the suitability of VR software. Abstract

Immersive virtual reality (VR) emerges as a promising research and clinical tool. However, several studies suggest that VR induced adverse symptoms and effects (VRISE) may undermine the health and safety standards, and the reliability of the scientific results. In the current literature review, the technical reasons for the adverse symptomatology are investigated to provide suggestions and technological knowledge for the implementation of VR head-mounted display (HMD) systems in cognitive neuroscience. The technological systematic literature indicated features pertinent to display, sound, motion tracking, navigation, ergonomic interactions, user experience, and computer hardware that should be considered by the researchers. Subsequently, a meta-analysis of 44 neuroscientific or neuropsychological studies involving VR HMD systems was performed. The meta-analysis of the VR studies demonstrated that new generation HMDs induced significantly less VRISE and marginally fewer dropouts.Importantly, the commercial versions of the new generation HMDs with ergonomic interactions had zero incidents of adverse symptomatology and dropouts. HMDs equivalent to or greater than the commercial versions of contemporary HMDs accompanied with ergonomic interactions are suitable for implementation in cognitive neuroscience. Abstract

Objectives In SLE, deregulation of haematopoiesis is characterised by inflammatory priming and myeloid skewing of haematopoietic stem and progenitor cells (HSPCs). We sought to investigate the role of extramedullary haematopoiesis (EMH) as a key player for tissue injury in systemic autoimmune disorders.Methods Transcriptomic analysis of bone marrow (BM)-derived HSPCs from patients with SLE and NZBW/F1 lupus-prone mice was performed in combination with DNA methylation profile. Trained immunity (TI) was induced through β-glucan administration to the NZBW/F1 lupus-prone model. Disease activity was assessed through lupus nephritis (LN) histological grading. Colony-forming unit assay and adoptive cell transfer were used to assess HSPCs functionalities.Results Transcriptomic analysis shows that splenic HSPCs carry a higher inflammatory potential compared with their BM counterparts. Further induction of TI, through β-glucan administration, exacerbates splenic EMH, accentuates myeloid skewing and worsens LN. Methylomic analysis of BM-derived HSPCs demonstrates myeloid skewing which is in part driven by epigenetic tinkering. Importantly, transcriptomic analysis of human SLE BM-derived HSPCs demonstrates similar findings to those observed in diseased mice.Conclusions These data support a key role of granulocytes derived from primed HSPCs both at medullary and extramedullary sites in the pathogenesis of LN. EMH and TI contribute to SLE by sustaining the systemic inflammatory response and increasing the risk for flare.

Abstract

Consider a broadcast channel with $n$ users, where different users receive different messages, and suppose that each user has to receive $m$ packets. A quantity of interest here, introduced by Sharif and Hassibi (2006-7) \cite{Sh}, \cite{S-H}, is the (\emph{packet}) \emph{delay} $D_{m,n}$, namely the number of channel uses required to guarantee that all users will receive $m$ packets. For the case of a \emph{homogeneous} network, where in each channel use the transmitter chooses a user at random, i.e. with probability $1/n$, and sends him$/$her a packet, the same quantity $D_{m,n}$ had already appeared in the \emph{coupon collector} context, in the works of Newman and Shepp (1960) \cite{N-S} and of Erd\H{o}s and R\'{e}nyi (1961) \cite{E-R}. A problem of particular interest in wireless communications, related to the delay $D_{m,n}$, is to determine its behavior as $n$ and $m$ grow large. Regarding this problem, Sharif and Hassibi \cite{Sh}, \cite{S-H} managed to calculated the asymptotics of the mean value $\mathbb{E}[D_{m,n}]$, as $n \to \infty$, for the cases (a) $m = \ln n$ and (b) $m = (\ln n)^{\rho}$, $\rho > 1$. It is remarkable that Erd\H{o}s and R\'{e}nyi \cite{E-R} had, also, raised the question of the determination of the asymptotic profile of $D_{m,n}$ for large $m$ and $n$ (in 1961). And in the 1970's the limiting distribution of $D_{m,n}$ for large $m$ and $n$ was determined (in great generality) by Ivchenko \cite{I1} and \cite{I2}. In this article we determine the asymptotics of the moments of $D_{m,n}$ for large $m$ and $n$. We also derive its limiting distribution in the "supercritical case" where $m$ grows faster than $\ln n$ and in the "critical case" $m \sim \beta \ln n$, by an approach which is different from the one used by Ivchenko., Comment: 29 pages

Abstract

Abstract We challenge the hypothesis of enhanced myocardial reperfusion after implanting a left ventricular assist device together with bone marrow mononuclear stem cells in patients with end-stage ischemic cardiomyopathy. Irreversible myocardial loss observed in ischemic cardiomyopathy leads to progressive cardiac remodelling and dysfunction through a complex neurohormonal cascade. New generation assist devices promote myocardial recovery only in patients with dilated or peripartum cardiomyopathy. In the setting of diffuse myocardial ischemia not amenable to revascularization, native myocardial recovery has not been observed after implantation of an assist device as destination therapy. The hybrid approach of implanting autologous bone marrow stem cells during assist device implantation may eventually improve native cardiac function, which may be associated with a better prognosis eventually ameliorating the need for subsequent heart transplantation. The aforementioned hypothesis has to be tested with well-designed prospective multicentre studies.
