2. Metasurface spectrometers beyond resolution-sensitivity constraints

Abstract

Optical spectroscopy plays an essential role across scientific research and industry for non-contact materials analysis1-3, increasingly through in-situ or portable platforms4-6. However, when considering low-light-level applications, conventional spectrometer designs necessitate a compromise between their resolution and sensitivity7,8, especially as device and detector dimensions are scaled down. Here, we report on a miniaturizable spectrometer platform where light throughput onto the detector is instead enhanced as the resolution is increased. This planar, CMOS-compatible platform is based around metasurface encoders designed to exhibit photonic bound states in the continuum9, where operational range can be altered or extended simply through adjusting geometric parameters. This system can enhance photon collection efficiency by up to two orders of magnitude versus conventional designs; we demonstrate this sensitivity advantage through ultra-low-intensity fluorescent and astrophotonic spectroscopy. This work represents a step forward for the practical utility of spectrometers, affording a route to integrated, chip-based devices that maintain high resolution and SNR without requiring prohibitively long integration times.

3. Gesture recognition system based on CNN-IndRNN and OpenBCI

Abstract

Surface electromyography (sEMG), as a key technology of non-invasive muscle computer interface, is an important method of human-computer interaction. We proposed a CNN-IndRNN (Convolutional Neural Network-Independent Recurrent Neural Network) hybrid algorithm to analyse sEMG signals and classify hand gestures. Ninapro’s dataset of 10 volunteers was used to develop the model, and by using only one time-domain feature (root mean square of sEMG), an average accuracy of 87.43% on 18 gestures is achieved. The proposed algorithm obtains a state-of-the-art classification performance with a significantly reduced model. In order to verify the robustness of the CNN-IndRNN model, a compact real¬time recognition system was constructed. The system was based on open-source hardware (OpenBCI) and a custom Python-based software. Results show that the 10-subject rock-paper-scissors gesture recognition accuracy reaches 99.1%.

8. High electromechanical coupling factor Lamb wave resonator.

Abstract

Lamb wave resonators (LWRs) based on lithium niobate on insulator (LNOI) substrates operating in an A1 mode at frequencies above 5 GHz typically exhibit high electromechanical coupling coefficients (K2) ranging from 20% to 30%. This makes them promising candidates to replace current bulk acoustic wave technology in next-generation broadband RF filters. However, the K2 of conventional LWRs still struggles to meet application requirements for bandwidths exceeding 1 GHz, such as WiFi-6E. This paper presents an analytical optimization approach for rapid and comprehensive scanning of the full 3D Euler space to find the maximum effective K2 of LWR devices. Such a full scan is difficult to achieve by the conventional time-consuming finite element method (FEM). The K2 results for a selected subset of Euler angles obtained through this analytical approach align with FEM simulation results. The optimized results show that LWRs on LNOI can achieve the highest K2 of 59.92% at Euler angles of (0, −151°, −60°), providing bandwidths exceeding 1 GHz at 5 GHz. To validate this optimization approach, LWRs with various orientations were fabricated on both 41° YX-cut and Z-cut LNOI wafers, with measured K2 values at different Euler angles agreeing well with both analytical and FEM results. The proposed K2 optimization method serves as a valuable guideline for selecting substrate cuts and device orientations in the design of ultra-broadband filters for next-generation telecommunications. Abstract

The performance of nanoscale electronic devices based on a two-three dimensional (2D-3D) interface is significantly affected by the electrical contacts that interconnect these materials with external circuitry. This work investigates charge transport effects at the 2D-3D ohmic contact coupled with the thermionic injection model for graphene/Si Schottky junction. Here, w e focus on the intrinsic properties of graphene-metal contacts, paying particular attention to the nature of the contact failure mechanism under high electrical stress. According to our findings, severe current crowding (CC) effects in highly conductive electrical contact significantly affect device failure that can be reduced by spatially varying the contact properties and geometry. The impact of electrical breakdown on material degradation is systematically analyzed by atomic force, Raman, scanning electron, and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopies. Our devices withstand high electrostatic discharge spikes over a longer period, manifesting high robustness and operational stability. This research paves the way towards a highly robust and reliable graphene/Si heterostructure in futuristic on-chip integration in dynamic switching. The methods we employed here can be extended for other nanoscale electronic devices based on 2D-3D interfaces

Abstract

Passive wireless surface acoustic wave (SAW) sensors are very useful for on-site monitoring of the working status of machines in complex environments, such as high-temperature rotating objects. For rotating parts, it is difficult to realize real-time and continuous monitoring because of the unstable sensing signal caused by the continuous change of the relative position of the rotating part to the sensor and shielding of the signal. In our SAW sensing system, we propose a loop antenna integrated with the rotating part to obtain a stable sensing signal owing to its omnidirectional radiation pattern. Methodologies for determining the antenna dimension, system operating frequency, and procedures for designing a SAW sensor tag are discussed in this paper. By fully utilizing the influence of metal rotor on antenna performance, the antenna needs no impedance matching elements while it provides sufficient gain, which equips the antenna with nearly zero temperature drift at a wide temperature-sensing range. Experimental verification results show that this sensing system can greatly improve the stability of the sensing signal significantly and can achieve a temperature sensing accuracy of ~1 °C at different rotational speeds, demonstrated by the feasibility of the loop antenna for monitoring the working status of rotating metal parts.
