1. Characteristics of plasma flow profiles in a super-X-divertor-like configuration

Abstract

Plasma flow patterns in a super-X-divertor-like configuration are investigated by using a one-dimensional plasma fluid model with the anisotropic-ion pressure (AIP model). The AIP model enables to treat supersonic plasma flows self-consistently by describing the parallel plasma momentum transport with a hyperbolic equation keeping the finite effect of the parallel viscosity. A supersonic plasma flow in the diverging-magnetic-field divertor region is generated due to the magnetic nozzle effect. It is found that the sonic-transition point has bifurcation characteristics. A numerical solution from the AIP model agrees well with an analytical one. The Braginskii’s plasma fluid model, on the other hand, creates various unphysical profiles in the supersonic plasma flow region for different boundary conditions of the plasma flow at the sheath entrance. It is also found that a particle source/sink in front of the target brings about generations of subsonic/supersonic plasma flow profiles. Moving the target position, it is found that a discontinuous change in the sonic-transition point and corresponding profile of plasma flow can happen due to the bifurcating characteristics of the sonic-transition point. Abstract

The coronavirus outbreak in late 2019 and the subsequent restrictions on mobility and physical contacts caused an extreme collapse of international tourism. Shortly before the pandemic turned the world upside down, one of the most pressing issues in global tourism was a phenomenon that became known as overtourism. It describes massively the negative impacts of tourism on destinations and the frustrated residents protesting against it, with discontent reaching a dimension that could hardly be estimated at the time when Doxey’s Irritation Index was created. Especially in southern European destinations, thousands of people have taken to the streets over their dissatisfaction with the unlimited growth of tourism and its negative effects on their daily lives. Within a few years, small neighbourhood actions morphed into coordinated social movements demanding that politicians make fundamental changes to the socio-economic system. Those events demonstrate a politicizing effect of tourism that has not sufficiently been addressed hitherto in tourism research, which is mainly focused on the attitude of the visited towards tourism itself. This article offers a broader socio-political approach that focuses on tourism as one of the largest industries within a capitalist system that has massive impacts on people’s lives, rather than simply on changing attitudes towards tourism. Twelve problem-centred interviews with actors of the anti-overtourism movements in the Balearic Island of Mallorca were conducted to examine the effects of overtourism and COVID-19-caused tourism breakdown on residents’ socio-political perspectives. Building on the transformative learning theory developed by the American sociologist Jack Mezirow, the analysis of the data revealed far-reaching influences on residents’ personal development, fundamental perspectives and professional decisions.

3. The nexus between an art experience and creative tourism

Abstract

The cultural sector is increasingly seen as a potential driver of (tourism) growth by governments, especially in peripheral sub-regions like Tasmania where the once dominant industries have departed. This sector can be a source of local creativity, social inclusion and an attractor of tourists. Occasionally, the creation of an iconic cultural entity serves this purpose with minimal input of public resources. Such a case is provided with the opening of the privately owned and operated Museum of Old and New Art (MONA) in the state of Tasmania, Australia in 2011. This article analyses the relationship between MONA and its creative tourism experience, and the government of Tasmania. A particular focus is thereby on how those actors use the concept of a place-based creative art experience to attract tourists with events and exhibitions. In this respect, the MONA case shows that the concept of creative tourism is far more complex than just taking a "creative" approach. Moreover, it argues that using creative and cultural tourism experiences for place branding strategies will only be successful if the strategies are mutually agreed upon amongst all stakeholders. In this sense, the article stipulates a discussion on stakeholder relations in the creative tourism sector.

Abstract

The problem of constructing Monte-Carlo solutions of drift-diffusion systems corresponding to Fokker–Planck equations with sources and sinks is revisited. Firstly, a compact formalism is introduced for the specific problem of stationary solutions. This leads to identification of the dwell time as the key quantity to characterize the system and to obtain a proper normalization for statistical analysis of numerical results. Secondly, the question of appropriate track length estimators for drift-diffusion systems is discussed for a 1D model system. It is found that a simple track length estimator can be given only for pure drift motion without diffusion. The stochastic nature of the diffusive part cannot be appropriately described by the path length of simulation particles. Further analysis of the usual situation with inhomogeneous drift and diffusion coefficients leads to an error estimate based on particle trajectories. The result for limits in grid cell size and time step used for the construction of Monte-Carlo trajectories resembles the Courant-Friedrichs-Lewy and von Neumann conditions for explicit methods.

Abstract

Agritourism is increasing in popularity as more urban residents appreciate the slower paced rural environment and its authenticity. External influences (political crises and pandemics) have recently reduced mobility which makes agritourism an attractive alternative to former more distant holiday destinations. Agritourists are interested in working farms, local production and animal husbandry. Some European regions (e.g., Bavaria and South Tyrol) have successfully developed agritourism whereas the majority of rural regions are left behind. Agritourism diversifies farmers’ business model and increases their income. For our study, we chose Kleve County (Lower Rhine Area, Germany) as an exemplary region for a touristically unknown rural area. Regional opinion leaders, farmers and industry experts were interviewed to share their experiences about factors that could further and contribute to successful development of agritourism. The results of our case study and supplementary market interviews suggest that its success in less known rural regions depends on the geographic location, mutual efforts of local visionary entrepreneurs, regional beneficial networks and on committed political stakeholders to develop a sustainable business model. The results may be useful for other comparable European rural regions to diversify their farming and develop their own business model.

Abstract

The Middle East is one of the fastest growing tourism regions in the world. Especially Dubai (since the 1980s) and Abu Dhabi (since the 1990s) have invested heavily in tourism development to firstly enhance their recognition as international destinations and secondly to diversify their economies away from the oil production. Surprisingly, there is a lack of academic published articles on those two emirates’ international destination image. This paper attempts to fill this gap by studying and comparing the images of Abu Dhabi and Dubai amongst potential first-time visitors from one of their main source markets – Germany. An empirical study amongst 300 respondents from North-Rhine Westphalia, Germany, was conducted to reveal the cognitive image attributes of Dubai and Abu Dhabi for non-visitors. Despite both places having a similar basis for destination development, their images differ. Thus, Abu Dhabi and Dubai are not seen as competitors on the tourism market, instead they could even increase the mutual benefits through highlighting specific images more distinctly. Further, the research identified a missing fit between the desired tourism destination image for both destinations and the perceived destination image. This is especially significant for the aspect of sustainability, which both emirates try to promote. Potential tourists rather perceive both emirates as unsustainable and not environmentally conscious.

Abstract

The arts and cultural sector is recognised as an important driver of urban and regional development, with empirical evidence linking it to economic growth, social inclusion and increased social capital. Despite best efforts, however, government-sponsored cultural tourism policy development has been met with mixed results; researchers and practitioners alike agreeing that there are fundamental issues regarding government policy conceptualisation and implementation in this regard. In order to explore the policy development decisions that underpinned a successful cultural tourism-based economic and social development, this paper examines the relationship between a regional government and the globally renowned Museum of Old and New Art located in Tasmania, Australia. The quasi-longitudinal data revealed four critical interactions underpinning the regional government’s cultural tourism policy development: cooperation between the Tasmanian government and (a) the cultural organisation and (b) related industries; the provision of supportive infrastructure, and; the ability of the cultural organisation to provide immersive experiences.

The chapter contributions in this volume are then discussed, focusing first on those pertaining to Part II—Assessing businesses willingness and ability to engage with CSR 2.0 themes. The second half of the chapter explains how authors engage with the four research themes concerned with the more detailed aspects of implementing initiatives, including how they put into practice business innovations and partnerships consistent with CSR 2.0.

Abstract

Within the EUROfusion MST1 work package, a series of experiments has been conducted on AUG and TCV devices to disentangle the role of plasma fueling and plasma shape for the onset of small ELM regimes. On both devices, small ELM regimes with high confinement are achieved if and only if two conditions are fulfilled at the same time. Firstly, the plasma density at the separatrix must be large enough (), leading to a pressure profile flattening at the separatrix, which stabilizes type-I ELMs. Secondly, the magnetic configuration has to be close to a double null (DN), leading to a reduction of the magnetic shear in the extreme vicinity of the separatrix. Abstract

The expectations of tourists/visitors and the operational parameters of tourism/attraction providers, along with intentions and constraints of both parties, create a complex mixture of challenges that could be alleviated and eventually bring about transition for a more viable future of zoos management with a CSR approach that draws on Humanistic Management principles. In order to argue this point an overview over the topic zoo management set within the context of current CSR and humanistic developments is necessary. In conjunction with human attitudes towards non-human captive animals, they provide the basis to answer the question if humans and zoo management are prepared to alter their approach to those animals to a more humanistic management.

Abstract

Half a century following the birth of environmental policies and authorities worldwide, businesses still argue they can significantly improve their performances voluntarily, based on instruments such as Corporate Social Responsibility. Likewise, having been challenged much earlier by social and labour policies, many corporate leaders are adamant that much has already been achieved and can still be improved voluntarily, in terms of how they interact with employees, stakeholders, local communities and citizens. In this chapter, we review key challenges that are not just outstanding, but continuously emerging for businesses and which require a significantly more proactive and impactful engagement with the world in which firms operate. We provide a brief overview of the milestones in the development of the Corporate Social Responsibility concept and the literature on the critiques regarding how businesses have responded to corporate responsibility calls. A critical analysis of the approaches and progress so far in terms of the scientific investigation of the implementation of this concept is also offered, highlighting areas that would benefit improvement. In the second part of the chapter the concept of Corporate Sustainability and Responsibility (CSR 2.0) is discussed, as proposed by Wayne Vissers and presented most recently in the 2014 book “CSR 2.0: Transforming Corporate Sustainability and Responsibility”. This will help map, in Chap. 2, the CSR 2.0 features discussed by the contributors to this volume. We also articulate a number of research themes to guide progress regarding the implementation of CSR 2.0 and explain how the chapters in this volume contribute to these themes as well.

Abstract

Advanced divertors gain larger plasma wetted area by poloidal or total flux expansion. Qualitative characteristics of supersonic plasma flows which are generated by the magnetic nozzle effect are studied by using a plasma fluid model incorporating anisotropic ion pressure (AIP model). The AIP model can self-consistently simulate supersonic plasma flows because, unlike the widely-used plasma fluid model (the Braginslii equations), the equation of parallel plasma momentum in it is described as a hyperbolic-type and the plasma flow velocity is solved without using explicit boundary conditions at the sheath entrance in front of divertor plates. In comparisons of plasma profiles between the AIP model and the Braginskii equations, it is observed that the plasma flow velocity in the Braginskii equations is forced to the sound speed at the sheath entrance in conditions of decelerating supersonic plasma flowsa#13; leading to qualitative deviations with the AIP model. In an application of the AIP model to a scrape-off layer/divertor region incorporating super-X divertors with various flux-expansion ratios, supersonic plasma flows in divertor regions and highly anisotropic ion temperatures are successfully simulated. It is also demonstrated that it becomes easier with the AIP model to explain the mechanisms of generations of supersonic plasma flows and acceleration/deceleration of them (including stationary shock waves) in flux-expanding divertors from the mirror effect point of view.

Abstract

Tourism-related carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions are a central driver of anthropogenic climate change. At the same time, climate change has both direct and indirect impacts on tourism, varying from damages of tourist assets due to extreme weather events, to losses of biodiversity. Small island developing states (SIDS) heavily depend on international tourism as a source of revenue and income. Therefore, much could be gained by assessing the vulnerability of the SIDS tourism sector and by identifying measures that may assist these islands in their sustainable adaptation efforts. Against this background, this interdisciplinary paper provides a review of tourism development and the implications of its emissions on the global climate, linked with observed and projected influences of climate change in the Pacific region, to explain the growing vulnerability of the overall sector, with a particular focus on SIDS tourism. A description of the effects of COVID-19 on international tourism and its consequences for SIDS complement the analysis. Case studies of two Pacific islands present some evidence of current climate impacts, underscoring the multiple risks small island nations and their tourism sectors face. The paper concludes by stating that some measures may be prioritized by decision-makers, so as to increase the resilience of a transforming tourism sector in SIDS.

Abstract

This book offers essential insights into how the world's second largest industry, tourism, is responding to challenges involved in expanding the corporate social responsibility (CSR) concept to corporate sustainability and responsibility, referred to as CSR 2.0. It analyzes the typical setup of tourism with various types of commercial agents: corporations, small and medium sized enterprises, public-private partnerships, social enterprises and local cooperatives. In addition, the book examines a broad range of voluntary initiatives, the effectiveness of these efforts, and how contextual and wider policy features shape these relationships. The book is divided into three parts, the first of which elaborates on strategic drivers and rationales for CSR. In turn, the second part introduces readers to design approaches for CSR programs and envisaged impacts, while part three focuses on implementation, certification, reporting, and possible outcomes. Each part offers a mixture of theoretical perspectives, synthesis analyses and case studies. The respective chapters tackle a broad spectrum of tourism sub-sectors, e.g. the cruise industry, aviation, gastronomy, nature-based tourism, and urban destinations.

Abstract

The ASDEX Upgrade (AUG) programme, jointly run with the EUROfusion MST1 task force, continues to significantly enhance the physics base of ITER and DEMO. Here, the full tungsten wall is a key asset for extrapolating to future devices. The high overall heating power, flexible heating mix and comprehensive diagnostic set allows studies ranging from mimicking the scrape-off-layer and divertor conditions of ITER and DEMO at high density to fully non-inductive operation (q95 = 5.5, ) at low density. Higher installed electron cyclotron resonance heating power 6 MW, new diagnostics and improved analysis techniques have further enhanced the capabilities of AUG. Stable high-density H-modes with MW m−1 with fully detached strike-points have been demonstrated. The ballooning instability close to the separatrix has been identified as a potential cause leading to the H-mode density limit and is also found to play an important role for the access to small edge-localized modes (ELMs). Density limit disruptions have been successfully avoided using a path-oriented approach to disruption handling and progress has been made in understanding the dissipation and avoidance of runaway electron beams. ELM suppression with resonant magnetic perturbations is now routinely achieved reaching transiently . This gives new insight into the field penetration physics, in particular with respect to plasma flows. Modelling agrees well with plasma response measurements and a helically localised ballooning structure observed prior to the ELM is evidence for the changed edge stability due to the magnetic perturbations. The impact of 3D perturbations on heat load patterns and fast-ion losses have been further elaborated. Progress has also been made in understanding the ELM cycle itself. Here, new fast measurements of and Er allow for inter ELM transport analysis confirming that Er is dominated by the diamagnetic term even for fast timescales. New analysis techniques allow detailed comparison of the ELM crash and are in good agreement with nonlinear MHD modelling. The observation of accelerated ions during the ELM crash can be seen as evidence for the reconnection during the ELM. As type-I ELMs (even mitigated) are likely not a viable operational regime in DEMO studies of 'natural' no ELM regimes have been extended. Stable I-modes up to have been characterised using -feedback. Core physics has been advanced by more detailed characterisation of the turbulence with new measurements such as the eddy tilt angle—measured for the first time—or the cross-phase angle of and fluctuations. These new data put strong constraints on gyro-kinetic turbulence modelling. In addition, carefully executed studies in different main species (H, D and He) and with different heating mixes highlight the importance of the collisional energy exchange for interpreting energy confinement. A new regime with a hollow profile now gives access to regimes mimicking aspects of burning plasma conditions and lead to nonlinear interactions of energetic particle modes despite the sub-Alfvénic beam energy. This will help to validate the fast-ion codes for predicting ITER and DEMO. Abstract

Shani and Arad (2014) claimed that tourism scholars tend to endorse the most pessimistic assessments regarding climate change, and that anthropogenic climate change was a "fashionable" and "highly controversial scientific topic". This brief rejoinder provides the balance that is missing from such climate change denial and skepticism studies on climate change and tourism. Recent research provides substantial evidence that reports on anthropogenic climate change are accurate, and that human-induced greenhouse gas emissions, including from the tourism industry, play a significant role in climate change. Some positive net effects may be experienced by some destinations in the short-term, but in the long-term all elements of the tourism system will be impacted. The expansion of tourism emissions at a rate greater than efficiency gains means that it is increasingly urgent that the tourism sector acknowledge, accept and respond to climate change. Debate on tourism-related adaptation and mitigation measures is to be encouraged and welcomed. Climate change denial is not.

Abstract

15th Annual International Conference on Computational Science (ICCS), Reykjavik Univ, Reykjavik, ICELAND, JUN 01-03, 2015; International audience; A multiscale model for an improved description of radial particle transport described by the density continuity equation in large-scale plasma edge simulations for tokamak fusion devices is presented. It includes the effects of mesoscale drift-fluid dynamics on the macroscale profiles and vice versa. The realization of the multiscale model in form of the coupled code system B2-ATTEMPT is outlined. A procedure employed to efficiently determine the averaged mesoscale terms using a nonparametric trend test, the Reverse Arrangements Test, is described. Results of stationary, self-consistent B2-ATTEMPT simulations are compared to prior simulations for experiments at the TEXTOR tokamak, making a first evaluation of the predicted magnitude of radial particle transport possible.

Abstract

Auch wenn sich Australien und Neuseeland seit den 1980er-Jahren zu attraktiven Reisezielen des internationalen Tourismus entwickelt haben und die Tourismusbranche beider Länder mittlerweile eine tragende wirtschaftlichen Säule darstellt, gibt es im deutschsprachigen Raum nahezu keine Abhandlungen zu diesem Thema. Dieses Buch stellt die touristische Entwicklung beider Länder dar und leistet damit einen wichtigen Beitrag zum besseren Verständnis der Tourismusdestinationen. Ziel des Buches ist es, Entwicklungslinien des Tourismus in Australien und Neuseeland zu skizzieren, gegenwärtige Aspekte touristischer Entwicklung zu erörtern und zukünftige Trends aufzuzeigen. Abstract

The analysis in this work essentially addresses the general question to what extent the temporal average of a particular quantity which is a highly nonlinear function of fluctuating quantities can be approximated by using the averages of the fluctuating quantities for its evaluation. The concrete case considered is the line emission intensity from sputtered impurities being a function of fluctuating electron density and temperature in a plasma beam of the PSI-2 device. A three-dimensional fluid model is employed to study the impact of plasma fluctuations on the distribution of particles and line emission in PSI-2 discharges and its interpretation in long-term measurements. In the model presented the solution of a vorticity equation to obtain a self-consistent electric field is avoided and a synthetic turbulent velocity field is included instead. This approach is based on a Langevin model including advection and allows numerically efficient parameter scans by controlling amplitude, correlation length and correlation time of plasma fluctuations known from extended 3D simulations and/or experiment. The synthetic turbulence model considered is an extension of established stochastic models used for studies of passive scalar advection and therefore, it is described in detail in a general framework. Numerical examples of PSI-2 applications show that a double log-normal probability density function for the electrons and impurity ions is likely to occur and that this supports the conclusion that very high levels of intermittency are required to find a significant impact on the experimental evaluation method which is based on temporal averages only. Consequently, for typical PSI-2 experiments the method of evaluation based on averaged plasma parameters is justified.
