Anti-Müllerian hormone (AMH) is produced by ovarian granulosa cells (GCs)and plays a major role in inhibiting the recruitment of primordial follicles and reducing the sensitivity of growing follicles to follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH). Bone morphogenetic protein 6 (BMP6) has similar spatiotemporal expression to AMH during follicular development, suggesting that BMP6 may regulate AMH expression. However, the specific mechanism by which BMP6 regulates AMH expression remains unclear. The objectives of this study were to examine the molecular pathway by which BMP6 regulates AMH expression. The results showed that BMP6 promoted the secretion and expression of AMH in goat ovarian GCs. Mechanistically, BMP6 upregulated the expression of sex-determining region Y-box 9 (SOX9) and GATA-binding factor 4 (GATA4), which was associated with the transcriptional initiation of AMH. AMH expression was significantly decreased by GATA4 knockdown. Moreover, BMP6 treatment promoted the phosphorylation of SMAD1/5/8, whereas inhibiting the SMAD1/5/8 signaling pathway significantly abolished BMP6-induced upregulation of AMH and GATA4 expression. Interestingly, the activation of SMAD1/5/8 alone did not affect the expression of AMH or GATA4. The results suggested that BMP6 upregulated GATA4 through the SMAD1/5/8 signaling pathway, which in turn promoted AMH expression.

Background: Effective communication between doctors and patients can contribute to a positive therapeutic effect, better patient outcomes and satisfaction. Doctor-patient communication skills are essential skills that all medical students should acquire during their clinical training. This study aimed to explore the doctors-patient communication skills of medical students in China and the potential influence factors. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted in WuHu City, China. Our study was a part of the teaching quality evaluation of Wannan Medical College. Medical students who were in their final year of clinical learning and have finished a series of pre-clinical training were invited to participate in the survey. 607 medical students participated in this study. Students' social demographic, work-related characteristics and doctor-patient communication skills were collected. The doctor-patient communication skills were measured using the doctor-patient Communication Behavior Scale. The influencing factors were explored by univariate analysis and multiple linear regression analysis. Results: Compared with the reference population, medical students reported significantly higher scores in total scores for the doctor-patient Communication Behavior Scale for Medical Students.Medical students without doctor-patient communication experiences (β=-11.87, 95%CI=-17.49,-6.24, ppConclusion: To further promote students’ doctor-patient communication skills, medical universities and colleges should offer students with more practice opportunities and corresponding training, and communication education should run throughout the whole process of medical education.

Isorhamnetin is a natural flavonoid widely distributed in fruits and vegetables. However, the roles of isorhamnetin involved in steroidogenesis, proliferation, and apoptosis in ovarian granulosa cells (GCs) are poorly understood. We found that isorhamnetin promoted the secretion of estrogen and inhibited the secretion of progesterone and testosterone by modulating steroidogenesis-associated proteins and mRNA such as CYP19A1, StAR, and 3β-HSD in ovarian GCs. Mechanistically, isorhamnetin stimulated the expression of the proliferating cell nuclear antigen and C-myc and promoted the proliferation of GCs via the PI3K/Akt signaling pathway. Furthermore, isorhamnetin increased the protein expression of CyclinB, CyclinD, CyclinE, and CyclinA, thereby raising the ratio of S-phase cells in response to GC proliferation. Changes in the expression of apoptosis-associated proteins (Bcl2, Bax, and cytochrome c) and intracellular reactive oxygen species levels showed that isorhamnetin inhibited GC apoptosis. Collectively, these findings indicate that isorhamnetin regulates steroidogenesis through the activation of PI3K/Akt, which promotes proliferation, inhibits apoptosis, and alleviates oxidative stress.

Estrogen and its analogues are ubiquitous in agricultural environments, with large biological functions of oocyte development. Gap junction intercellular communications (GJICs) are the structural basis in cumulus-oocyte complexes (COCs) and regulate oocyte maturation and developmental material transport through a number of pathways. This study mainly determines the effect and potential mechanism of estrogen (17β-estradiol) in regulating GJICs in porcine COCs. In our study, 17β-estradiol increased porcine nuclear maturation in a time-dependent manner. The analysis revealed that 17β-estradiol upregulated the autophagy in COCs during in vitro maturation. In contrast with the control, 17β-estradiol decreased GJICs in a time-dependent manner between cumulus cells and oocytes, while it was consistent with the control group at 24 h. Carbenoxolone (CBX) blocks GJICs as a negative control group used in our system. Autophagy inhibitor autophinib decreased oocyte maturation, and the reduced nuclear maturation treated with autophinib was abolished by 17β-estradiol. Besides, the upregulation effect of autophinib on GJICs and transzonal projections (TZPs) was decreased by 17β-estradiol. 17β-Estradiol could reduce serine 368 phosphorylation of connexin 43 (Cx43) protein by autophinib in porcine COCs. These results were dependent upon the MEK/ERK signaling pathway. Furthermore, 17β-estradiol-induced GJICs and Cx43 phosphorylation were inhibited by autophinib or the MEK/ERK pathway inhibitors (Trametinib and FR 180204), indicating that 17β-estradiol regulated GJICs through the MEK/ERK signaling pathway. In conclusion, 17β-estradiol improves the autophagy-mediated nuclear maturation with downregulating GJICs and TZPs in porcine COCs. Such an effect occurs by phosphorylation of Cx43, which was regulated via the MEK/ERK signaling pathway.

Long non-coding RNA (lncRNA) maternally expressed gene 3 (MEG3) has been identified as a regulatory molecule in angiogenesis. The goal of this study was to illustrate how MEG3 affects the angiogenesis of vascular endothelial cells. Expression of MEG3, miR-147 and intracellular cell adhesion molecule-1 (ICAM-1) in human microvascular endothelial cell line (HMEC-1) was altered by transfection, then cell viability, apoptosis, migration, tube formation, as well as the correlation among MEG3, miR-147 and ICAM-1 were explored. MEG3 was down-regulated during tube formation of HMEC-1 cells. MEG3 expression suppressed cells viability, migration and tube formation, while it induced apoptosis. MEG3 could bind with miR-147 and repress miR-147 expression. MiR-147 induced ICAM-1 expression, and contained ICAM-1 target sequences. The anti-atherogenic actions of MEG3 were inhibited by miR-147, and the anti-atherogenic actions of miR-147 suppression were also inhibited when ICAM-1 was overexpressed. Further, ICAM-1 overexpression showed activated roles in Wnt/β-catenin and Jak/Stat signaling pathways. In low-density lipoprotein receptor (Ldlr)−/− mice, MEG3 overexpression reduced CD68+, CD3+ and ICAM-1 areas in lesions and increased collagen content. MEG3 inhibited HMEC-1 cell growth, migration and tube formation. The anti-atherogenic actions of MEG3 might be mediated via sponging miR-147, and thereby repressing the expression of ICAM-1.

Electric field was introduced for ultra-lean methane oxidation over a series of Co3O4/Ce0.75Zr0.25 catalysts. Catalytic activities were significantly promoted by the electric field. It was found that the catalyst with 25% of Co loading showed the highest catalytic activity at 9 mA of electric currency, and the light-off temperature (T50) was as low as 240 °C. The effect of the electric field over the catalysts was examined from the structural and surface point of view (XRD, XRS, BET, H2-TPR). The obtained results demonstrated that the electric field facilitated the release of oxygen from lattice by promoting the reduction of Ce4+ to Ce3+, therefore reinforced the formation of Co3O4 on catalyst surface. Moreover, tetrahedral Co2+ in the Co3O4 spinel were oxidized to Co3+. Besides, electric field enhanced the reducing capacity of the Co3O4 with the newly formed tetrahedral Co3+ easily reduced at low-temperature conditions. The FTIR results revealed that the active sites of methane chemisorption located respectively at tetrahedral Co3+ with active O species from lattice in the electric field, and octahedral Co3+ with pre-adsorbed gaseous O2 formed at relatively higher-temperature in conventional catalytic process. The following dehydrogenation and oxidation processes were accelerated in the electric field with fast conversion rates of intermediates, namely methyl and formates species. Based on experimental results and comprehensive analysis, the mechanism of catalytic oxidation of methane over Co3O4/Ce0.75Zr0.25 catalysts with the assistance of electric field was proposed.

Steroid hormones are required for normal reproductive function of female. The aim of this study was to investigate the role of Raf-ERK1/2 on steroid hormone synthesis in bovine ovarian granulosa cells. Immunohistochemistry assay showed that both B-Raf and C-Raf were expressed in granulosa cells, theca cells and Sertoli cells. The protein expression of Raf or ERK1/2 was clearly decreased by Raf inhibitor GSK2118436 or ERK1/2 inhibitor SCH772984, respectively (p < 0.05). In addition, western blotting was performed for investigating the crosstalk between Raf and ERK1/2, the data showed that Raf positively regulated ERK1/2, whereas ERK1/2 had a negative feedback effect on Raf. The biosynthesis of oestradiol or testosterone was significantly decreased by treatment with GSK2118436 or SCH772984 (p < 0.05). Conversely, the progesterone biosynthesis was clearly increased by treatment with those inhibitors (p < 0.05). Furthermore, the mRNA expression of STAR, aromatase and CYP17 was blocked by Raf-ERK1/2 signalling inhibition, which oppositely induced the mRNA expression of CYP11. Together, these findings suggested that Raf-ERK1/2 signalling pathways mediate steroid hormone synthesis via affecting the expression of steroidogenic enzymes.

Background MiRNA can be involved in regulating tumor genesis and development through regulating the major genes expression and regulating corresponding pathways. Here, we investigated the function and mechanisms of miR-483-3p in glioma progression. Results We found that miR-483-3p was increased in glioma cells and tissues. Silencing of miR-483-3p attenuated glioma progression and stemness. STAT3 activation which was induced by IL6 mediated the transcription of miR-483-3p gene. Conclusion The present study indicated miR-483-3p acting as a tumorigenesis gene regulated by IL6/STAT3 axis, thus providing more experimental basis for clinical treatment of glioma. Methods qRT-PCR was performed to measure miR-483-3p level. Transwell assay, wound healing assay, flow cytometry and immunofluorescence are used to detect the role of miR-483-3p in migration, invasion, epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) and stemness in glioma cells. Western blot analysis was performed to analyze protein level. Luciferase assay was performed to examine the interaction between miR-483-3p and STAT3.

A novel catalytic system for benzene oxidation at low temperature is constructed by combining electric field with Pt-Ce-Zr nano-catalyst. The 1 wt% Pt/Ce0.75Zr0.25O2 catalyst assisted by electric field shows the best catalytic performance with 90% benzene conversion at 96.5 °C and excellent water resistance. The effect of electric field on catalysts and catalytic process is comprehensively investigated. The results of XRD, TEM, XPS and H2-TPR reveal that the electric field show negligible influence on the crystal structure and surface morphology of the catalyst, but it can lead to more oxygen vacancies. Therefore, more adsorbed oxygen with higher activity will be produced on the catalyst surface. The redox performance is improved due to the fact that valence distribution of Pt is changed in forms of more active sites composed of high valence oxides (PtO) generated in electric field. In situ DRIFTS is used to investigate the oxidation process of benzene and the results prove that electric field could accelerate the production and consumption of intermediate products, and produce new intermediate products such as carboxylic acid species, indicating that the introduction of electric field may open up a new rapid reaction path and promote the activation of benzene at low temperature.

A series of Pd/Co3O4 catalysts were prepared by Self-Propagating High-Temperature Synthesis (SHS) method in this study, and electric field was applied for catalytic combustion of lean methane over Pd/Co3O4 catalysts at low temperature. When electric field was applied, the catalytic combustion performance of Pd/Co3O4 catalysts was greatly improved, and the application of electric field could reduce the load of active element Pd to some extent while maintaining the same efficiency. Based on experimental tests and the analysis results of X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), H2-temperature-programmed reduction (H2-TPR) and in-situ diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy (in-situ DRIFTS), the mechanism of catalytic oxidation of CH4 over Pd/Co3O4 catalysts in electric field was proposed. The catalytic combustion of CH4 occurs only when the temperature is higher than 250 °C normally, but when electric field was applied, the whole process of CH4 oxidation was promoted significantly and the reaction temperature was reduced. Electric field could promote the reduction of the support Co3O4 to release the lattice oxygen, resulting in the increase of PdOx and the surface chemisorbed oxygen, which could provide more active sites for the low-temperature oxidation of CH4. Furthermore, electric field could accelerate the dehydroxylation of CoOOH to further enhance the activity of the catalysts.

This study was aimed to investigate whether and how Rutin protects boar sperm against cryoinjury during cryopreservation. Five concentrations of Rutin with 0.2, 0.4, 0.6, 1.0, and 2.0 mM were added to the freezing extender of boar sperm, respectively, and the effects on quality and function of boar sperm after freezing-thawing were assessed. The results showed that the sperm motility, mitochondrial activity, plasma membrane integrity, and acrosomal integrity were significantly improved in 0.4 mM and 0.6 mM Rutin groups (p < .05). Compared with ganoderma lucidum polysaccharide (GLP) or Tanshinone IIA, Rutin exhibited higher rates of mitochondrial activity and acrosome integrity (p < .05). Mechanistically, the addition of Rutin at the concentration of 0.6, 0.8, and 1.0 mM significantly attenuated ROS accumulation and MDA production by improving antioxidant enzymatic activity, including SOD, CAT, and GSH-Px (p < .05). Functionally, a higher penetration rate and the increased total efficiency of fertilization were observed in the 0.4, 0.6, and 1.0 mM Rutin groups than in the control group (p < .05). Moreover, the addition of Rutin (0.6 mM) significantly induced an increase in both the cleavage and blastocyst rates (p < .05). In summary, supplementation with Rutin in cryopreservation medium protects boar sperm against ROS attack by enhancing the antioxidative defense.

Phospholipase C (PLC) can participate in cell proliferation, differentiation and aging. However, whether it has a function in apoptosis in porcine primary granulosa cells is largely uncertain. The objective of this study was to examine the effects of PLC on apoptosis of porcine primary granulosa cells cultured in vitro. The mRNA expression of BAK, BAX and CASP3, were upregulated in the cells treated with U73122 (the PLC inhibitor). The abundance of BCL2 mRNA, was upregulated, while BAX and CASP3 mRNA expression was decreased after treatment with m-3M3FBS (the PLC activator). Both the early and late apoptosis rate were maximized with 0.5 μM U73122 for 4 h. The rate of early apoptosis was the highest at 4 h and the rate of late apoptosis was the highest at 12 h in the m-3M3FBS group. The protein abundance of PLCβ1, protein kinase C β (PKCβ), calmodulin-dependent protein kinaseII α (CAMKIIα) and calcineurinA (CalnA) were decreased by U73122, and CAMKIIα protein abundance was increased by m-3M3FBS. The mRNA expression of several downstream genes (CDC42, NFATc1, and NFκB) was upregulated by PLC. Our results demonstrated that apoptosis can be inhibited by altering PLC signaling in porcine primary granulosa cells cultured in vitro, and several calcium−sensitive targets and several downstream genes might take part in the processes.

The acute exacerbations and progressive deterioration seen in thromboangiitis obliterans (TAO) have been related to poor clinical outcomes. Here, we have studied the association of laboratory biomarkers with the acute phase of TAO (AP-TAO).We conducted a retrospective case-control study on 112 patients with TAO and 98 healthy controls; comparing the neutrophil-to-lymphocyte rate (NLR), lymphocyte-to-monocyte rate (LMR), platelet-to-neutrophil rate (PNR), fibrinogen (FIB), and apolipoprotein A-I (ApoA-I). Significantly higher NLR level, as well as lower LMR, PNR, and ApoA-I levels were observed in patients with TAO, particularly the acute phase. Significantly increased FIB was only observed in AP-TAO. A positive correlation was found between NLR and with C-reactive protein (CRP) in the acute phase (r = 0.817, P 0.001). Moreover, NLR, PNR, and FIB levels of 3.38, 45.12, and 3.69 were shown to be the predictive cut-off values for the AP-TAO (sensitivity 72.5, 82,4, and 66,7%, specificity 92.2, 78.4, and 96.1%; area under the curve [AUC] 0.875, 0.855, and 0.872), respectively. The FIB level was independently associated with the AP-TAO (OR = 11.420, P = 0.007).NLR, PNR, and FIB may be useful markers for the identification of inflammation and the AP-TAO. FIB may be an independent risk factor for the acute phase.

SIRT2, the predominantly cytosolic sirtuin, plays important role in multiple biological processes, including metabolism, stress response, and aging. However, the function of SIRT2 in gap junction intercellular communications (GJICs) of cumulus-oocyte complexes (COCs) is not yet known. The purpose of the present study was to evaluate the effect and underlining mechanism of SIRT2 on GJICs in COCs. Here, we found that treatment with SIRT2 inhibitors (SirReal2 or TM) inhibited bovine oocyte nuclear maturation. Further analysis revealed that SIRT2 inactivation disturbed the GJICs of COCs during in vitro maturation. Correspondingly, both the Cx43 phosphorylation levels and MEK/MER signaling pathways were induced by SIRT2 inhibition. Importantly, SIRT2-mediated Cx43 phosphorylation was completely abolished by treatment with MEK1/2 inhibitor (Trametinib). Furthermore, treatment with SIRT2 inhibitors resulted in the high levels of MEK1/2 acetylation. Functionally, downregulating the MER/ERK pathways with inhibitors (Trametinib or SCH772984) could attenuate the closure of GJICs caused by SIRT2 inactivation in partly. In addition, inhibition of SIRT2 activity significantly decreased the membrane and zona pellucida localization of Cx43 by upregulating the levels of Cx43 acetylation. Taken together, these results demonstrated a novel role that SIRT2 regulates GJICs via modulating the phosphorylation and deacetylation of Cx43 in COCs.

Aims Sirtuins have been implicated in the aging process, however, the functions of SIRT2 in post-maturation aging of oocytes are not fully understood. The purpose of the present investigation was to assess the roles of SIRT2 in aged oocytes and mechanisms involved. Main methods The fresh MII oocytes were aging in vitro, and treated with SIRT2 inhibitor (SirReal2), autophagy activator (Rapamycin), and autophagy inhibitor (3-Ma) for 24 h, respectively. Oocyte activation, cytoplasmic fragmentation, and spindle defects, mitochondrial distribution, ROS levels, ATP production, mitochondrial membrane potential, and early apoptosis were investigated. Western blotting was performed to determine LC3-II accumulation, SQSTM1 degradation, and caspase-3 activity. Key findings SIRT2 expression gradually decreased in a time-dependent manner during oocyte aging. Treatment with SirReal2 significantly increased the rates of oocyte activation, cytoplasmic fragmentation, and spindle defects. In particular, the high ROS levels, abnormal mitochondrial distribution, low ATP production, and lost ΔΨm were observed in SirReal2-exposed oocytes. Further analysis revealed that LC3-II accumulation and SQSTM1 degradation were induced by SIRT2 inhibition. By performing early apoptosis analysis showed that oocyte aging was accompanied with cellular apoptosis, and SIRT2 inhibition increased apoptosis rates of aged oocytes. Importantly, upregulating autophagy with Rapamycin could mimic the effects of SIRT2 inhibition on apoptosis by increasing caspase-3 activation, whereas downregulating autophagy with 3-MA could abolish those effects by blocking caspase-3 activation. Significance Our results suggest that SIRT2 inactivation is a key mechanism underlying of cellular aging, and SIRT2 inhibition contributes to autophagy-dependent cellular apoptosis in post-maturation oocytes.

SIRT2, a member of the sirtuin family, has been recently shown to exert important effects on mitosis and/or metabolism. However, its roles in oocyte maturation have not been fully clarified. In this study, SIRT2, located in the cytoplasm and nucleus, was found in abundance in the meiotic stage, and its expression gradually decreased until the blastocyst stage. Treatment with SIRT2 inhibitors resulted in the prevention of oocyte maturation and the formation of poor-quality oocytes. By performing confocal scanning and quantitative analysis, the results showed that SIRT2 inhibition induced prominent defects in spindle/chromosome morphology, and led to the hyperacetylation of &alpha, tubulin and H4K16. In particular, SIRT2 inhibition impeded cytoplasmic maturation by disturbing the normal distribution of cortical granules, endoplasmic reticulum, and mitochondria during oocyte meiosis. Meanwhile, exposure to SirReal2 led to elevated intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS) accumulation, low ATP production, and reduced mitochondrial membrane potential in oocytes. Further analysis revealed that SIRT2 inhibition modulated mitochondrial biogenesis and dynamics via the downregulation of TFAM and Mfn2, and the upregulation of DRP1. Mechanistically, SIRT2 inhibition blocked the nuclear translocation of FoxO3a by increasing FoxO3a acetylation, thereby downregulating the expression of FoxO3a-dependent antioxidant genes SOD2 and Cat. These results provide insights into the potential mechanisms by which SIRT2-dependent deacetylation activity exerts its effects on oocyte quality.

Follicle stimulating hormone (FSH), composed of FSHα and FSHβ subunits, is essential for female follicle development and male spermatogenesis. The recombinant human FSH (rhFSH) products on the market are mainly generated from mammalian cells and are expensive. Large animal mammary gland bioreactors are urgently needed to produce large amounts of rhFSH. However, there are currently no effective methods to prepare rhFSH by large animals mainly due to the fact that excessive accumulation of FSH might cause many adverse effects in animals. We herein report the development and characterization of functional self-assembled rhFSH produced in goat mammary epithelial cells (GMECs). FSHα and FSHβ stably expressed in Chinese hamster ovary (CHO) cell lines were secreted into culture medium and well glycosylated. Importantly, FSHα and FSHβ expressed apart were able to assemble into functional FSH. We next inserted human FSHα or FSHβ gene separately into goat β-Lactoglobulin locus in GMECs by CRISPR/Cas9. Inactive FSHα and FSHβ subunits expressed from GMECs assembled into rhFSH as analyzed by His-tag pull down assay. Functional assessment of rhFSH by cAMP induction assay, mouse ovulation induction and rat ovarian weight gain experiments showed that the bioactivity of self-assembled rhFSH expressed by GMECs was comparable to that of Gonal-F both in vitro and in vivo. Our study demonstrated that FSHα and FSHβ can be separately expressed and assembled into functional rhFSH, and provided the basis for future preparing FSH by goat mammary gland bioreactor with less health problems on the producing animals.

SIRT2 has been shown to possess NAD+-dependent deacetylase and desuccinylase enzymatic activities, it also regulates metabolism homeostasis in mammals. Previous data has suggested that resveratrol, a potential activator of Sirtuins, played a stimulation role in steroidogenesis. Unfortunately, to date, the physiological roles of SIRT2 in ovarian granular cells (GCs) are largely unknown. Here, we studied the function and molecular mechanisms of SIRT2 on steroid hormone synthesis in GCs from Qinchuan cattle. Immunohistochemistry and western blotting showed that SIRT2 was expressed not only in GCs and cumulus cells, but also in oocytes and theca cells. We found that the secretion of progesterone was induced, whereas that of estrogen and testosterone secretion was suppressed by treatment with the SIRT2 inhibitor (Thiomyristoyl or SirReal2) or siRNA. Additionally, the PPARs/LXRα signaling pathways were suppressed by SIRT2 siRNA or inhibitors. The mRNA expression of CYP17, aromatase and StAR was suppressed, but the abundance of CYP11A1 mRNA was induced by SIRT2 inhibition. Furthermore, the PPARα agonist or PPARγ antagonist could mimic the effects of SIRT2 inhibition on hormones levels and gene expression associated with steroid hormone biosynthesis. In turn, those effects were abolished by the LXRα agonist (LXR-623). Together, these data support the hypothesis that SIRT2 regulates steroid hormone synthesis via the PPARs/LXRα pathways in GCs.

AP and FA were both demonstrated to be high-efficiency antioxidants and had not previously been used to protect sperm from cryodamage. As boar sperm is sensitive to oxidative stress, suitable antioxidants are still needed for improving frozen-thawed sperm quality. With this purpose, semen samples coming from five boars were used in this study. Ejaculates of five boars were mixed and split into 16 aliquots, in which different doses of AP and FA were added separately or together. The motility, the plasma membrane integrity, the mitochondrial activity, the acrosomal integrity, the antioxidase activities and the malondialdehyde concentration of the frozen-thawed boar sperm were assessed. The results suggested that both AP and FA significantly improved the frozen-thawed boar sperm quality in all these aspects when they were added to the freezing extender separately, while the highest improvement was recorded when the extender was supplemented with 0.1 mmol/L AP plus 0.15 mmol/L FA. These findings demonstrated that supplementation of freezing extender with both AP and FA had a combined, beneficial effect on frozen-thawed boar sperm.

The application of electric field promotes benzene oxidation significantly over Pd/CoxCey catalysts. For 1% Pd loading catalysts, the complete oxidation of benzene can be realized at 175 &deg, C with an electric field under an input current of 3 mA, 79 &deg, C lower than the temperature demanded for complete benzene conversion without electric field. The introduction of electric field can save Pd loading in the catalysts while maintaining high benzene conversion. The characterization experiments showed that CeO2 reduction was accelerated with electric field and created more active oxygen, promoting the formation of active sites on the catalyst surface. The OH removal ability of PdO was enhanced by forming CoO(OH) species, which can easily dehydroxylate since the reduction of Co3+ was promoted by the electric field. The optimized Ce/Co ratio is a balance between oxygen availability and OH removal ability.

Electric field was applied into the catalytic oxidation for the naphthalene over m% Cu/Ce0.55Zr0.45O2 catalysts. It was found that catalysts with 2% Cu loading exhibit the best catalytic performance and complete naphthalene conversion was achieved at low temperature of 150 °C. The effect of Cu modification and electric field were thoroughly investigated with various characterization technologies. It was found that the doping of Cu to Ce0.55Zr0.45O2 support is beneficial for the oxygen availability and regeneration capability, but suppressive for the naphthalene adsorption. Without electric field, the oxygen availability is the rate determining factor since the oxidation of adsorbed naphthalene on the catalyst surface is the lowest compared with the adsorption and oxygen regeneration process. Under the electric field, the conduction of electricity is through the occupation and reformation of oxygen vacancies by O ion, leading to highly improved oxygen mobility in the catalyst lattice. In addition, the formed Ce3+ in the electric field can easily be re-oxidized by the adjacent CuO, making oxygen species in CuO available for the naphthalene oxidation. Thus the catalytic performance was promoted due to the improved oxygen availability in the electric field and the optimized Cu loading is a balance between the adsorption ability and regeneration capability.

Petroleum hydrocarbons such as crude oil are important environmental contaminants. This study aims to isolate and identify bacterial strains from crude-oil contaminated environments with the capacity to produce biosurfactants when grown on a hydrophobic phase as well as to degrade petroleum hydrocarbons. Three strains were screened out using a combination of blood nutrient agar (NA) plate screening and crude oil mineral salt medium (MSM) plate tests. Grown on waste frying oil, all three strains were shown to produce rhamnolipids as biosurfactants. The three strains could also degrade n -alkanes up to n -C 40 . The removal efficiency of crude oil of each strain after 7 days of aerobic cultivation ranged from 36.0% to 46.4%, among which strain Z41 performed best. Gas chromatographic analysis of the residual oil showed that the degradation characteristics of the three strains differed from each other. The three strains behaved similarly in terms of glycolipid production as in crude oil degradation, suggesting biosurfactant production played a vital role in petroleum degradation. Using morphological, biochemical and physiological characterization and 16S rRNA sequencing, the three strains were identified as Pseudomonas aeruginosa , however producing very little amounts of pyocyanin. In this study, an efficient and simple protocol to screen out biosurfactant producing and crude oil degrading bacterial stains was developed. The reason why P . aeruginosa is often employed as biosurfactant-producing or oil-degrading strain may be found in its wide spread occurrence in contaminated environments, rapid growth, the ease of isolation and screening as well as the high biosurfactant production and crude oil degradation capacity.

We report a simple chemical vapor deposition method to fabricate Cu-doped ZnO hemispherical shell structures with room-temperature ferromagnetism (RTFM). Through a series of controlled experiments by changing the growth temperature and reaction time, we observe the evolution of product morphology from whole spherical structures into partially broken shells and hemispherical shells at different temperatures together with the reinforced hemispherical shells with the reaction time extended. The growth mechanism of the ZnO:Cu hemispherical shell structures has been proposed to involve the synthesis of Cu-doped Zn sphere, surface oxidation, and sublimation of the inner Zn from the broken shell. Background Unprovoked venous thromboembolism (VTE), generally divided into single and recurrent categories, is a common leading cause of morbidity and mortality in a real-world population. This study was aimed to explore the similarities and differences in the mechanisms of single and recurrent VTE. Methods Gene expression data (GSE19151) generated from 63 healthy controls, 32 single, and 38 recurrent VTE patients were analyzed. Differentially expressed genes (DEGs) were screened by Affy package and Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes and Gene Ontology enrichment analysis were performed using database for annotation, visualization, and integrated discovery. Based on the Search Tool for the Retrieval of Interacting Genes/Proteins database, protein–protein interaction network was visualized by Cytoscape, and modules were identified by CFinder. Finally, transcription factor regulatory networks were constructed. Results Totally, 559 and 294 DEGs were obtained from recurrent and single VTE, respectively. There were 202 upregulated and 58 downregulated genes overlapped between them. Terms of regulation of actin cytoskeleton enriched by downregulated genes and oxidative phosphorylation enriched by upregulated genes were found in 2 types of VTE. Leukocyte transendothelial migration and Jak-STAT signaling pathway were found related with recurrent VTE. In addition, genes including signal transducer and activator of transcription 3 (STAT3) involving in the Jak-STAT signaling pathway were highly connected nodes. Conclusions Actin cytoskeleton and oxidative phosphorylation may be involved in the common mechanisms of recurrent VTE and single VTE. Leukocyte migration and Jak-STAT signaling pathway and their related genes may be important for the development and recurrence of VTE.
