Abstract

The naming of prokaryotes is governed by the International Code of Nomenclature of Prokaryotes (ICNP) and partially by the International Code of Nomenclature for Algae, Fungi and Plants (ICN). Such codes must be able to determine names of taxa in a universal and unambiguous manner, thus serving as a common language across different fields and activities. This unity is undermined when a new code of nomenclature emerges that overlaps in scope with an established, time-tested code and uses the same format of names but assigns different nomenclatural status values to the names. The resulting nomenclatural confusion is not beneficial to the wider scientific community. Such ambiguity is expected to result from the establishment of the ‘Code of Nomenclature of Prokaryotes Described from DNA Sequence Data’ (‘SeqCode’), which is in general and specific conflict with the ICNP and the ICN. Shortcomings in the interpretation of the ICNP may have exacerbated the incompatibility between the codes. It is reiterated as to why proposals to accept sequences as nomenclatural types of species and subspecies with validly published names, now implemented in the SeqCode, have not been implemented by the International Committee on Systematics of Prokaryotes (ICSP), which oversees the ICNP. The absence of certain regulations from the ICNP for the naming of as yet uncultivated prokaryotes is an acceptable scientific argument, although it does not justify the establishment of a separate code. Moreover, the proposals rejected by the ICSP are unnecessary to adequately regulate the naming of uncultivated prokaryotes. To provide a better service to the wider scientific community, an alternative proposal to emend the ICNP is presented, which would result in Candidatus names being regulated analogously to validly published names. This proposal is fully consistent with previous ICSP decisions, preserves the essential unity of nomenclature and avoids the expected nomenclatural confusion.

9. EVALUATION OF ENTEROCOCCUS DURANS E1T1 ISOLATED FROM INFANT FECES AS A PROMISING PROBIOTIC FOR CADMIUM DETOXIFICATION.

Abstract

The purpose of the current study was to evaluate the ability of some metal-resistant lactic acid bacteria (LAB) to remove cadmium in order to highlight the importance of probiotic LAB in the detoxification of these pollutants at the level of the digestive tract or in fermented foods. Infant feces samples were used to isolate Cd-resistant LAB, they were screened using the spread plate technique on agar media after being supplemented with cadmium at an initial concentration of 50 mg.L-1. In this research, out of 106 isolates tested for Cdresistance, 11 isolates were selected based on their high capacity to grow in presence of cadmium. After which they were tested for their ability to resist different heavy metals and for probiotic properties. The study was completed using the isolate E1T1 identified as Enterococcus durans based on 16S rRNA gene sequence, which showed the highest cadmium (MIC 600 mg.L-1) and other heavy metals resistance capacity and better probiotic properties. The selected isolate presented strong adhesion ability to epithelial cells, good antibacterial activity, and was non-hemolytic. Furthermore, it had excellent cadmium removal efficiencies, with rates of 65.94% and 28.78% after 96 hours in living and dead cells, respectively. E. durans E1T1 had also high cadmium accumulation efficiencies, with an estimated value of 11.47 mg Cd.g-1 of cells (wet weight). According to the findings from the study, the Cd-resistant E. durans E1T1 may be employed as a promising probiotic isolate for removing cadmium. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

A recently discovered series of inhibitors of the ATPase function of bacterial type IIA topoisomerases featuring a carboxypyrrole component led us to attempt to replace this group with a potentially bioisosteric carboxypyrazole. Accordingly, synthetic pathways to 2-(4-(1H-pyrazole-5-carboxamido)piperidin-1-yl)thiazole-5-carboxylic acids or 2-(4-(N-methyl-1H-pyrazole5-carboxamido)piperidin-1-yl)thiazole-5-carboxylic acids featuring an array of substituents on the pyrazole ring were explored. Unfortunately, none of the analogues made were effective on the ATPase function of Mycobacterium tuberculosis gyrase as well on the DNA supercoiling activity of the whole gyrase of M. tuberculosis and Escherichia coli. However, this work is still providing original insights in chemistry as well as in the structure-activity relationships of this series of inhibitors.
