Abstract

La conservazione e il restauro di manufatti in argento e sue leghe di interesse storico, artistico e archeologico sono uno dei temi di attenzione e dibattito nel campo dei beni culturali. In passato, l’insieme delle operazioni finalizzate al restauro di un qualsivoglia manufatto storico-artistico, non sempre si sono rivelate adeguate a rallentarne il naturale processo di degrado nel tempo. Da qui la consapevolezza di impostare e perfezionare tecniche di restauro sulla base di conoscenze scientifiche sempre più approfondite e con conseguente impiego di metodi d’indagine non distruttivi. La caratterizzazione qualitativa e quantitativa degli elementi e dei composti del manufatto, non solo rappresenta uno strumento prezioso nel campo della ricerca storica (origine, datazione, ecc.), ma è anche di fondamentale importanza per una migliore comprensione e prevenzione dei processi di alterazione cui il manufatto è soggetto. Contemporaneamente lo studio e l’identificazione dei prodotti di corrosione rappresentano un prerequisito essenziale per il corretto restauro di antichi manufatti argentei e un basilare contribuito nel campo della conservazione. Il presente lavoro è finalizzato alla conoscenza approfondita e completa dell’applicabilità e dell’efficacia della tecnica di pulitura di manufatti archeologici in argento e sue leghe usando un laser UV (laser cleaning). A tale scopo gli interventi di pulitura laser sono stati monitorati da indagini di diffrattometria e fluorescenza a raggi X condotte prima, durante e dopo i trattamenti laser. Tali indagini hanno permesso di valutare la concentrazione superficiale degli elementi costituenti le patine e gli effetti fotochimici indotti dal laser.

Abstract

Results on the Rayleigh to Compton ratio (R/C) for elements and compounds with low atomic number (5 6 Z 6 12) are presented. These materials are difficult to identify and characterize with other radiological techniques because of their very close linear attenuation coefficients. A transportable setup for R/C measurements was assembled and tested. This comprises an X-ray tube, in which the output radiation is partially ‘‘converted’’ to monochromatic radiation emitted by a secondary target. The experimental results are compared with theory, determined through coherent and incoherent scattering cross sections.

Abstract

Energy-dispersive x-ray fluorescence (EDXRF) analysis is particularly suited to analyse paintings, because it does not significantly damage the sample and allows the measurement of several elements in a single measurement. The use of portable equipment allows a completely non-destructive analysis, although the interpretation of the measured spectra requires a more accurate approach. EDXRF analysis of paintings generally gives the following information: identification of the elements, and therefore pigments, employed by the artist; possible presence of elements on the surface (sulphur, chlorine) due to pollution effects; identification of previous restoration areas, through the presence of 'modern' elements, such as titanium, zinc, cadmium and others. Recently, the famous Chapel of the Scrovegni, painted by Giotto in Padua in 1303-05, was analysed in detail to obtain the above information and, more specifically, to analyse the golden haloes. In this paper the measurement of sulphur on the surface of the frescoes is described, together with the composition of the golden haloes. Copyright (C) 2004 John Wiley Sons, Ltd.

Abstract

The aim of this paper is the analysis of main elements of the patinas on an outdoor bronze monument, through the use of a portable Energy Dispersive X-Ray Fluorescence (EDXRF) equipment. In particular we investigated the concentration of copper, tin, lead, calcium, iron, sulphur and chlorine on the patinas of a bronze statue dedicated to Sigismondo Castromediano, which was created in 1905 and later placed in Lecce (Apulia, Southern Italy). Thanks to the versatility of the EDXRF portable apparatus we carried out a complete scan of the monument in a relatively short time. This has enabled us to obtain useful information on the patinas in a completely non-invasive way. EDXRF experimental data demonstrated that the two analysed parts of the monument are constituted by different bronzes, whereas the elements that characterize the depositions are equivalent in the two monitored parts. Moreover, multivariate statistical analysis was carried out in order to identify possible correlations and/or differences of elemental composition among the patinas of these two statues. Finally, a X-Ray Diffraction (XRD) analysis was carried out on a sample of deposit collected from an area of the statue not exposed to the washing away, in order to identify the phases of the deposit and to evaluate possible corrosion products. The main results of XRD analysis show that there are not corrosion products and the deposit is due to suspended particulate. The information obtained can be helpful for both archaeological and conservation studies for possible future monitoring and/or restoration work of the statue in object. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
