Herein we introduce fully modular synthesis leading to three representative examples of rigid molecular rods that are intended to form sturdy monolayers on various surfaces. These molecules contain two triptycene units that are designed to interlock into a compact "double-decker" structure. Two of the three final products provided suitable crystals for X-ray diffraction (analyzed on synchrotron), allowing deeper insight into packing in the 3-D crystal lattice. The acidity of all three compounds were determined by capillary electrophoresis, and the pKa values ranged between 2.06-2.53. All three rigid rods easily formed Langmuir-Blodgett monolayers (LBMs) on the water-air interfaces, with the area per molecule equal to 55-59 Å2 /molecule, suggesting tight intermolecular packing. The thickness of all three films reached ∼19 Å after transfer to a gold (111) surface, meaning that individual molecules are tilted maximally 38° from the axis perpendicular to the surface. The structure of one of these films on a gold (111) surface was visualized by AFM. These geometrically unique molecules represent promising platforms with a wide scope of applicability in the supramolecular architecture.

Pyridine-terminated molecular rods and either (i) the cis-(dppp)(I)Pt(CC-triptycene-CC)Pt(I)(dppp) rod or (ii) the trans-(PEt3)2(I)Pt(CC-biphenyl-CC)Pt(I)(PEt3)2 rod assemble into macrocycles, characterized by NMR, ESI-IMS, and in two cases also single-crystal X-ray diffraction. The former form rectangles with bidentate phosphine-containing cis-coordinated Pt(II)-alkyne corners. In the latter, the preference of the Pt centers for a trans configuration overrules the preference of the triple bonds for linearity and NMR shows that they have oval structures with alternating bent rod and bent trans (CC)Pt(PEt3)2(CC) components, in agreement with density functional theory calculations.

Synthetic options for conversion of indeno[2,1‐c]fluorene‐5,8‐diones into larger polyaromatic compounds with extended π‐conjugated systems were explored. The crucial two‐fold transformation of the five‐membered ketone moieties of indeno[2,1‐c]fluorene‐5,8‐diones was based either on a one‐carbon homologation or on a ring‐expansion reaction which eventually enabled syntheses of compounds possessing substituted tribenzo[a,e,l]indeno[1,2,3‐hi]acephenanthrylenes and [5]helicenes scaffolds. The former was prepared by using a reaction sequence based on Ramirez olefination, intramolecular Heck reaction, and intermolecular Suzuki‐Miyaura cross‐coupling, whereas the latter utilized a sequence comprising Büchner−Curtius−Schlotterbeck reaction and intermolecular Suzuki‐Miyaura cross‐coupling. Scholl reaction of selected [5]helicenes yielded planarized polyaromatic compounds with the tribenzo[a,e,l]indeno[1,2,3‐hi]acephenanthrylene scaffold. Although organometallic porous polymer networks are recognized as promising heterogeneous catalysts, the relationship between ligand/monomer geometry and network parameters is usually not well understood due to the lack of atom-resolved characterization methods for the amorphous network matrix. In this work, a series of copper(II) salen-type metal complexes was synthesized, using trans- and cis-1,2-diaminocyclohexane segments, and thoroughly characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction and solution- and solid-state NMR spectroscopy. Terminal ethynyl groups of the complexes were then transformed into polyacetylene chains by coordination chain-growth homopolymerization, resulting in highly porous (458–655 m2 g−1) organometallic polymer networks with a copper(II) ion content of about 12 wt%. The presence of paramagnetic copper(II) moieties in these complexes and respective polymer networks required the application of tailored NMR techniques, which together with X-ray crystallography and DFT calculations of the paramagnetic NMR shifts made it possible to investigate the differences in the complex geometry in liquid, powder and crystalline form and compare it with the complex geometry in polymer networks. All prepared organometallic polymer networks were also tested as heterogeneous catalysts for styrene oxidation with uncommonly high substrate conversions and compared with their low-molecular-weight analogues. We report the synthesis of a heterogenous silver catalyst stabilized by bidentate N-heterocyclic carbene ligands. The heterogeneous nature of the catalyst is inherently derived from the unprecedented internal structural features observed for the catalyst. X-ray studies show that the silver complex forms a two-dimensional cross-linked system, where one dimension of the network is formed by inorganic polymer strings and the second direction is formed by the interconnection of these inorganic strings with NHC bidentate ligands. This organized internal arrangement renders the complex insoluble in many common organic solvents and enables its utilization as a reusable heterogeneous catalyst in multicomponent A3 coupling reactions. Notably, propargylic amines were obtained with yields of up to 97%, and the catalyst demonstrated reusability for six cycles. A new hexadentate 1,4,7-triazacyclononane-based ligand bearing three coordinating methylene-(2,2,2-trifluoroethyl)phosphinate pendant arms was synthesized and its coordination behaviour towards selected divalent (Mg2+, Ca2+, Mn2+, Fe2+, Co2+, Ni2+, Cu2+, Zn2+) and trivalent (Cr3+, Fe3+, Co3+) transition metal ions was studied. The ligand forms stable complexes with late divalent transition metal ions (from Co2+ to Zn2+) and the complexes of these metal ions are formed above pH ∼3. A number of complexes with divalent metal ions were structurally characterized by means of single-crystal X-ray diffraction. The complex of the larger Mn2+ ion adopts a twisted trigonally antiprismatic geometry with a larger coordination cavity and smaller torsion of the pendant arms, whereas the smaller ions Ni2+, Cu2+ and Zn2+ form octahedral species with a smaller cavity and larger pendant arm torsion. In the case of the Co2+ complexes, both coordination arrangements were observed. The complexes with paramagnetic metal ions were studied from the point of view of potential utilization in 19F magnetic resonance imaging. A significant shortening of the 19F NMR longitudinal relaxation times was observed: a sub-millisecond range for complexes of Cr3+, Mn2+ and Fe3+ with symmetric electronic states (t2g3 and HS-d5), the millisecond range for the Ni2+ and Cu2+ complexes and tens of milliseconds for the Co2+ complex. Such short relaxation times are consistent with a short distance between the paramagnetic metal ion and the fluorine atoms (∼5.5–6.5 Å). Among the redox-active complexes (Mn3+/Mn2+, Fe3+/Fe2+, Co3+/Co2+, Cu2+/Cu+), the cobalt complexes show sufficient stability and a paramagnetic–diamagnetic changeover with the redox potential lying in a physiologically relevant range. Thus, the Co3+/Co2+ complex pair can be potentially used as a smart redox-responsive contrast agent for 19F MRI. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Hybrid phosphines usually combine a phosphine moiety with another heteroatom secondary donor group in their structures while compounds equipped with hydrocarbyl π–donor moieties remain uncommon. This contribution reports the synthesis and structural characterization of the first P/π-allyl-chelating complexes that were obtained using the structurally flexible and redox-active ferrocene unit as the scaffold, viz. [PdCl(R2PfcCHCHCH2-η3:κP)] (1R; R = Ph and cyclohexyl (Cy); fc = ferrocene-1,1′-diyl). These compounds were synthesized from the respective phosphinoferrocene carboxaldehydes R2PfcCHO via reaction with vinylmagnesium bromide to generate 1-(phosphinoferrocenyl)allyl alcohols, which were subsequently acetylated. The resulting allyl acetates reacted smoothly with [Pd2(dba)3]/[Et3NH]Cl (dba = dibenzylideneacetone) to produce the target compounds. Complexes 1R and their nontethered analogues [PdCl(η3-C3H5)(FcPR2-κP)] (5R; Fc = ferrocenyl) were evaluated as pre-catalysts for the Pd-catalysed allylic amination of cinnamyl acetate with aliphatic amines and Suzuki–Miyaura-type cross-coupling of 4-tolylboronic acid with benzoyl chloride. In these reactions, better results were achieved with compounds 5R (particularly with 5Ph), presumably because they form more stable LPd(0)-type catalysts. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This work reports a biomimetic synthesis of polyarylated fluorene derivatives. The molecules are formed via intramolecular electrophilic aromatic substitution, resembling a cyclization leading towards the natural selaginpulvilins from selaginellins. The scope of the reaction was investigated, and the products were obtained in 60–95 % yields. Some of the compounds decompose to a stable radical. We investigated the nature and the origin of the radical using experimental methods, including EPR or electrochemical measurements, as well as theoretical methods, such as DFT calculations. Based on our observations, we hypothesize, that phenoxy radicals are formed in the first instance, which however undergo internal rearrangement to thermodynamically more stable carbon‐centered radicals.
