Abstract

The scanning tunnelling microscope (STM) was used to study carbon monoxide oxidation on an oxygen covered rhodium-110 surface. Samples of rhodium-110 were subjected to 5 langmuirs of oxygen while a level of 650 K was maintained. STM images show oxygen-induced reconstruction along with highdensity step edges, terraces and domain boundaries. These results indicate that carbon monoxide eliminates one-dimensional oxygen atoms. This results demonstrate the importance of STM in observing surface reaction microkinetics.

Abstract

We present a comparative study of Ti02-based and Au catalysts tor the physical vapor deposition of (Bi1-xSbr)2Se3topological insulator nanowires. The standard Au nanoparticle catalyst was compared to live Ti02nanoparticle based catalysts (anatasc, rutile, P-25, high surface area anatase, and Ti02 supported Au particles). The use of Au nanoparticles seriously harms the properties of nanowires. thereby limiting their application. In contrast, Ti02based catalysts lead to the residue-free growth of nanowires with a higher degree of crystallinity. Homogeneous nanowire ensembles are achieved with the mixed phase P-25 catalyst, and a possible growth mechanism is proposed.

44. CO and O2Adsorption on K/Pt(111)

Abstract

We have investigated CO and O2on K promoted Pt(111) using mainly molecular beams and TPD. Surprisingly, CO adsorption is little affected by the presence of potassium on the surface up to around 1/6th of a monolayer promoter coverage (half of the maximum), even though the chemisorbed state in TPD is more strongly adsorbed. This is because the adsorption is dominated by the precursor state kinetics which are little affected by the K. However, as the K coverage increases and the layer changes from ionic to metallic, then the adsorption of CO diminishes to zero, since both CO and K are electron donors. In contrast the opposite is the case for oxygen adsorption. The sticking probability on the clean surface is very low, but is enormously enhanced at even low coverages of K, and oxygen can adsorb strongly onto the metallic layer to high coverage. A number of oxygen states can be identified in TPD, those desorbing in the same temperature range as for clean Pt, those associated with Pt affected by K at low coverage of the latter, and those on the metallic layer. The former is dissociated oxygen while the latter is molecular peroxide.

48. PdZn catalysts for CO2 hydrogenation to methanol using chemical vapour impregnation (CVI).

Abstract

The formation of PdZn bimetallic alloys on ZnO, TiO2 and Al2O3 supports was investigated, together with the effect of alloy formation on the CO2 hydrogenation reaction. The chemical vapour impregnation (CVI) method produced PdZn nanoparticles with diameters of 3–6 nm. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction revealed the changes in the structure of the PdZn alloy that help stabilise formate intermediates during methanol synthesis. PdZn supported on TiO2 exhibits high methanol productivity of 1730 mmol kgcat−1 h−1 that is associated with the high dispersion of the supported PdZn alloy. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
