This paper is devoted to studying propagation phenomena in integro-differential equations with a weakly degenerate non-linearity. The reaction term can be seen as an intermediate between the classical logistic (or Fisher-KPP) non-linearity and the standard weak Allee effect one. We study the effect of the tails of the dispersal kernel on the rate of expansion. When the tail of the kernel is sub-exponential, the exact separation between existence and non-existence of travelling waves is exhibited. This, in turn, provides the exact separation between finite speed propagation and acceleration in the Cauchy problem. Moreover, the exact rates of acceleration for dispersal kernels with sub-exponential and algebraic tails are provided. Our approach is generic and covers a large variety of dispersal kernels including those leading to convolution and fractional Laplace operators. We present an extension of results in a previous paper by the first and the last author [PMP, 2022] about macroscopic limits of linear kinetic equations in (potentially) fractional regimes. More precisely, we develop a unified framework inspired by Ellis and Pinsky [J. Math. Pures Appl., 1975] for operators that preserve mass, momentum and energy, and have microscopic equilibrium with heavy tails (typically polynomial). This paper also generalizes one of Hittmeir and Merino [KRM, 2016] in a related framework. The main difficulty, that leads to our main contribution, is the understanding of the spectrum of the generator in the Fourier space, which is significantly complicated by the lack of spectral gap and the fat tails of the equilibrium. Indeed, the scaling of the eigenelements in the suitable macroscopic rescaling is subtle to handle. In particular, our study uncovered an interesting difference in scaling in the fractional regime, where the transversal wave eigenvalues converge faster to zero than the Boussinesq and acoustic wave eigenvalues.

This paper focuses on propagation phenomena in reaction-diffusion equations with a weaklymonostable nonlinearity. The reaction term can be seen as an intermediate between the classicallogistic one (or Fisher-KPP) and the standard weak Allee effect one. We investigate the effect ofthe decay rate of the initial data on the propagation rate. When the right tail of the initial datais sub-exponential, finite speed propagation and acceleration may happen and we derive the exactseparation between the two situations. When the initial data is sub-exponentially unbounded, accel-eration unconditionally occurs. Estimates for the locations of the level sets are expressed in termsof the decay of the initial data. In addition, sharp exponents of acceleration for initial data withsub-exponential and algebraic tails are given. Numerical simulations are presented to illustrate theabove findings.

This contribution deals with $\mathrm L^2$ hypocoercivity methods for kinetic Fokker-Planck equations with integrable local equilibria and a \emph{factorisation} property that relates the Fokker-Planck and the transport operators. Rates of convergence in presence of a global equilibrium, or decay rates otherwise, are estimated either by the corresponding rates in the diffusion limit, or by the rates of convergence to local equilibria, under moment conditions. On the basis of the underlying functional inequalities, we establish a classification of decay and convergence rates for large times, which includes for instance sub-exponential local equilibria and sub-exponential potentials.

Estimates on the asymptotic behaviour of solution to linear integro-differential equations are fundamental in understanding the dynamics occuring in many nonlocal evolution problems. They are usually derived by using precise decay estimates on the heat kernel of the considered diffusion process. In this note, we show that for some generic jump diffusion and particular initial data, one can derive a lower bound of the asymptotic behaviour of the solution using a simple PDE argument. This is viewed as an independant preliminary brick to study invasion phenomena in nonlinear reaction diffusion problems.

In this paper we focus on a spatially extended FitzHugh-Nagumo model with interactions. In the regime where strong and local interactions dominate, we quantify how the probability density of neurons concentrates into a Dirac distribution. Previous work investigating this question have provided relative bounds in integrability spaces. Using a Hopf-Cole framework, we derive precise $L^\infty$ estimates using subtle explicit sub- and super- solutions which prove, with rates of convergence, that the blow up profile is Gaussian.

Predicting the adaptation of populations to a changing environment is crucial to assess the impact of human activities on biodiversity. Many theoretical studies have tackled this issue by modeling the evolution of quantitative traits subject to stabilizing selection around an optimum phenotype, whose value is shifted continuously through time. In this context, the population fate results from the equilibrium distribution of the trait, relative to the moving optimum. Such a distribution may vary with the shape of selection, the system of reproduction, the number of loci, the mutation kernel or their interactions. Here, we develop a methodology that provides quantitative measures of population maladaptation and potential of survival directly from the entire profile of the phenotypic distribution, without any a priori on its shape.We investigate two different models of reproduction (asexual and infinitesimal sexual models of inheritance), with general forms of selection.In particular, we recover that fitness functions such that selection weakens away from the optimum lead to evolutionary tipping points, with an abrupt collapse of the population when the speed of environmental change is too high. Our unified framework furthermore allows highlighting the underlying mechanisms that lead to this phenomenon. More generally, it allows discussing similarities and discrepancies between the two reproduction models, the latter being ultimately explained by different constraints on the evolution of the phenotypic variance. We demonstrate that the mean fitness in the population crucially depends on the shape of the selection function in the sexual infinitesimal model, in contrast with the asexual model.In the asexual model, we also investigate the effect of the mutation kernel and we show that kernels with higher kurtosis tend to reduce maladaptation and improve fitness, especially in fast changing environments.

We study acceleration phenomena in monostable integro-differential equations with ignition nonlinearity. Our results cover fractional Laplace operators and standard convolutions in a unified way, which is also a contribution of this paper. To achieve this, we construct a sub-solution that captures the expected dynamics of the accelerating solution, and this is here the main difficulty. We study an acceleration phenomenon arising in monostable integro-differential equations with a weak Allee effect. Previous works have shown its occurrence and have given correct upper bounds on the rate of expansion in some particular cases, but precise lower bounds were still missing. In this paper, we provide a sharp lower bound for this acceleration rate, valid for a large class of dispersion operators. Our results manage to cover fractional Laplace operators and standard convolutions in a unified way, which is new in the literature. A first very important result of the paper is a general flattening estimate of independent interest: this phenomenon appears regularly in acceleration situations, but getting quantitative estimates is most of the time open. This estimate at hand, we construct a very subtle sub-solution that captures the expected dynamics of the accelerating solution (rates of expansion and flattening) and identifies several various regimes that appear in the dynamics depending on the parameters of the problem.

We propose a unified method for the large space-time scaling limit of \emph{linear} collisional kinetic equations in the whole space. The limit is of \emph{fractional} diffusion type for heavy tail equilibria with slow enough decay, and of diffusive type otherwise. The proof is constructive and the fractional/standard diffusion matrix is obtained. The method combines energy estimates and quantitative spectral methods to construct a `fluid mode'. The method is applied to scattering models (without assuming detailed balance conditions), Fokker-Planck operators and L{\'e}vy-Fokker-Planck operators. It proves a series of new results, including the fractional diffusive limit for Fokker-Planck operators in any dimension, for which the formulas for the diffusion coefficient were not known, for L{\'e}vy-Fokker-Planck operators with general equilibria, and for scattering operators including some cases of infinite mass equilibria. It also unifies and generalises the results of previous papers with a quantitative method, and our estimates on the fluid approximation error also seem novel.

We consider a class of reaction-diffusion equations of Fisher-KPP type in which the nonlinearity (reaction term) $f$ is merely $C^1$ at $u=0$ due to a logarithmic competition term. We first derive the asymptotic behavior of (minimal speed) traveling wave solutions that is, we obtain precise estimates on the decay to zero of the traveling wave profile at infinity. We then use this to characterize the Bramson shift between the traveling wave solutions and solutions of the Cauchy problem with localized initial data. We find a phase transition depending on how singular $f$ is near $u=0$ with quite different behavior for more singular $f$. This is in contrast to the smooth case, that is, when $f \in C^{1,\delta}$, where these behaviors are completely determined by $f'(0)$. In the singular case, several scales appear and require new techniques to understand.

We consider a system of two competing populations in two-dimensional heterogeneous environments. The populations are assumed to move horizontally and vertically with different probabilities, but are otherwise identical. We regard these probabilities as dispersal strategies. We show that the evolutionarily stable strategies are to move in one direction only. Our results predict that it is more beneficial for the species to choose the direction with smaller variation in the resource distribution. This finding seems to be in agreement with the classical results of Hasting [15] and Dockery et al. [11] for the evolution of slow dispersal, i.e. random diffusion is selected against in spatially heterogeneous environments. These conclusions also suggest that broader dispersal strategies should be considered regarding the movement in heterogeneous habitats.

Hypocoercivity methods are applied to linear kinetic equations without any space confinement, when local equilibria have a sub-exponential decay. By Nash type estimates, global rates of decay are obtained, which reflect the behavior of the heat equation obtained in the diffusion limit. The method applies to Fokker-Planck and scattering collision operators. The main tools are a weighted Poincar\'e inequality (in the Fokker-Planck case) and norms with various weights. The advantage of weighted Poincar\'e inequalities compared to the more classical weak Poincar\'e inequalities is that the description of the convergence rates to the local equilibrium does not require extra regularity assumptions to cover the transition from super-exponential and exponential local equilibria to sub-exponential local equilibria.

This paper is devoted to kinetic equations without confinement. We investigate the large time behaviour induced by collision operators with fat tailed local equilibria. Such operators have an anomalous diffusion limit. In the appropriate scaling, the macroscopic equation involves a fractional diffusion operator so that the optimal decay rate is determined by a fractional Nash type inequality. At kinetic level we develop an $\mathrm L^2$-hypocoercivity approach and establish a rate of decay compatible with the fractional diffusion limit.

This paper is devoted to Fokker-Planck and linear kinetic equations with very weak confinement corresponding to a potential with an at most logarithmic growth and no integrable stationary state. Our goal is to understand how to measure the decay rates when the diffusion wins over the confinement although the potential diverges at infinity.

This paper is intended to give a characterization of the optimality case in Nash's inequality, based on methods of nonlinear analysis for elliptic equations and techniques of the calculus of variations. By embedding the problem into a family of Gagliardo-Nirenberg inequalities, this approach reveals why optimal functions have compact support and also why optimal constants are determined by a simple spectral problem.

We consider the non-local Fisher-KPP equation modeling a population with individuals competing with each other for resources with a strength related to their distance, and obtain the asymptotics for the position of the invasion front starting from a localized population. Depending on the behavior of the competition kernel at infinity, the location of the front is either $2t - ({3}/2)\log t + O(1)$, as in the local case, or $2t - O(t^\beta)$ for some explicit $\beta \in (0,1)$. Our main tools here are alocal-in-time Harnack inequality and an analysis of the linearized problem with a suitable moving Dirichlet boundary condition. Our analysis also yields, for any $\beta\in(0,1)$, examples of Fisher-KPP type non-linearities $f\_\beta$ such that the front for the localFisher-KPP equation with reaction term $f\_\beta$ is at $2t - O(t^\beta)$.

In this paper, hypocoercivity methods are applied to linear kinetic equations with mass conservation and without confinement, in order to prove that the solutions have an algebraic decay rate in the long-time range, which the same as the rate of the heat equation. Two alternative approaches are developed: an analysis based on decoupled Fourier modes and a direct approach where, instead of the Poincar\'e inequality for the Dirichlet form, Nash's inequality is employed. The first approach is also used to provide a simple proof of exponential decay to equilibrium on the flat torus. The results are obtained on a space with exponential weights and then extended to larger function spaces by a factorization method. The optimality of the rates is discussed. Algebraic rates of decay on the whole space are improved when the initial datum has moment cancellations.
