This study intended to characterize the Portuguese school professionals' perception on SC, analyzing the connections to the students' DB. Another objective was to explore the differences on SC based on the functions of school professionals and school geographic location. An exploratory study with 333 school professionals was carried out. Concerning SC, the participants were asked about environmental-structural and relationships, while absenteeism, behavior problems, and incivilities were included in the students' DB. Overall, the participants generally reported positive perceptions about SC. Differences were observed on DB, based on SC ratings. The participants rating poorer environmental-structural and relationships tended to report more DB. SC differed according to the school geographic location and to functions of school professionals. Additional research about the implications of SC on students' DB is needed to develop preventive strategies.

6. School Personnel Perception of Parental Involvement and Students' Behavior Problems: Practical Implications

Abstract

School is a privileged context to prevent specific behavior problems. Parental involvement in school activities is crucial to promote social functioning. This study aimed to access the Portuguese school personnel perception of parental involvement and students' behavior problems. A study with 333 school personnel, aged between 29 and 66 (M = 50.84, SD = 7.54), was developed. School personnel's participants rated parental involvement as low and nearly one in five professionals rated student's general behavior as bad. A significant association between parental involvement and the perception of students' general behavior was found. 80% of the professionals rating student's general behavior as bad also rating parental involvement as poor. Additional research into implications of parental involvement in school activities and school students' behavior problems is necessary aiming assessment, prevention, and intervention strategies in this area.

Abstract

Intimate partner violence (IPV) is a serious public health issue and violation of human rights. During 2021–2022, many countries relaxed COVID-19 restrictions. This provided a unique opportunity to understand the prevalence and correlates of IPV during a period of relaxing COVID-19 restrictions. This cross-sectional study examined IPV during this period from the International Sexual HeAlth and REproductive Health (I-SHARE) study conducted from March to July 2022. Mixed-effects modeling was used to determine correlations of physical, sexual, and psychological violence as compared to before the COVID-19 restrictions. The population comprised individuals in 10 countries (Armenia, Brazil, Egypt, Denmark, Germany, Moldova, Nigeria, Portugal, Singapore and Spain). Our sample included 4,464 participants from these countries. In the previous 3 months, a total of 150 (6.1%) and 114 (4.6%) participants experienced physical violence once or multiple times, respectively. A total of 129 (5.1%) and 174 (6.9%) of participants experienced any form of sexual violence once or multiple times, respectively; and 377 (13.7%) and 574 (20.9%) of participants experienced any form of psychological violence once or multiple times, respectively. In general, identifying as a sexual minority and having children at home were associated with higher odds of experiencing IPV. Age, economic situation, cohabitation status, and a country's GDP per capita were associated with recent IPV or a worsening of IPV compared to before the COVID-19 restrictions, although results varied depending on the types of violence. Abstract

In Mozambique, women are the most affected by HIV/AIDS and heterosexual encounters remain the main route for HIV/AIDS. Condom use is the most effective method of HIV/AIDS prevention, and the intention to use and buy/get condoms has a significant role in safe sex behavior. This study aimed to evaluate the efficacy of two psychosocial interventions – the Didactic and ACCENT Interventions – to prevent HIV/AIDS among Mozambican Women. Participants were Mozambican women (n = 150), users of the gynecology clinic of the Central Hospital of Beira. The study design was a randomized controlled trial (RCT) with assignment to three groups: Didactic intervention, ACCENT intervention, and Control group. Measures were from an adaption of the Women's Health Questionnaire, which includes questions about sociodemographic, clinical, and behavioral variables related to HIV prevention/risk. There was a significant group effect on condom use and safer sex preparatory behaviors, F(2, 146) = 6.45, p =.002, with Bonferroni post-hoc tests showing differences between the ACCENT vs. Control groups and ACCENT vs. Didactic groups (all p =.022). There were no statistically significant time effects on both condom use and safer sex preparatory behaviors. Results are promising for HIV/AIDS prevention in Mozambican women at sexual risk, but replication is needed for generalizability of findings. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study is part of the ongoing project “PRIORITY | Prevention to Reduce Incidence Of Sexual Abuse by Reaching Individuals Concerned About Their Risk to Young People” (ISFP-2020-AG-CYBER)”, funded by Funded by the European Union‘s Internal Security Fund – Police. It aims to explore the experiences, opinions, and perceptions of Portuguese, German, and Swedish Criminal Police officers regarding child sexual abuse (CSA). It is also intended to know the barriers and opportunities perceived by the officers regarding the implementation of a prevention program directed to individuals concerned with the risk of involvement with minors (i.e., under 18 years of age). Participants will be enrolled in a focus group format, where they can talk and discuss the issues with other Criminal Police officers.

33. Is campus a place of (in)security and crime?: perceptions and predictors among higher education students

Abstract

This paper addresses subjective insecurity, namely perceptions of (in)security and criminal variables on campus among Portuguese higher education students. Additionally, predictors of perceptions of (in)security and gender differences were also examined. The participants were 775 students and data were collected through the “Diagnosis of Local Security Questionnaire”. Robbery, physical assault, theft, and sexual offenses were the most feared crimes. Additionally, robbery, theft, and public property damage were perceived as the most common on campus. Alcohol/drug consumption and juvenile conflicts/delinquency were the main reasons justifying criminal occurrences. Sociodemographic variables such as gender, age, education, and years of campus attendance, as well as criminal variables (e.g., perceived trend of crime, criminal occurrences, and crime promoters) predicted perceptions of (in)security. Females reported more fear than males of robbery, sexual offenses, physical aggression, and domestic violence. Therefore, preventive measures, including in the social domain and physical spaces, are mandatory to reduce violence on campus.

40. Três ensaios sobre absenteísmo docente na educação básica brasileira

Abstract

A busca por fatores que afetem o desempenho escolar dos alunos é tema de diversos estudos na Economia da Educação. Apesar de haver consenso em pesquisas teóricas sobre a importância do professor em sala de aula, no Brasil, pouco estudos indicaram empiricamente o tamanho deste impacto no desempenho individual e no efeito escola. A partir de um banco de dados inédito representativo a nível nacional, o Estudo Educatel, foi possível reunir características socioeconômicas, de saúde, de vida e condições de trabalho dos professores da educação básica brasileira a dados de proficiência, características da escola e do aluno advindos do Sistema de Avaliação da Educação Básica (Saeb). Entendendo o absenteísmo docente, ou seja, a ausência do professor em sala de aula como um indicador de saúde e condições de trabalho foi possível investigar quais fatores estão relacionados ao afastamento dos docentes considerando os diferentes motivos de falta. Os resultados do primeiro ensaio, a partir de um modelo logit, indicam a necessidade de políticas focalizadas na melhoria das condições de trabalho e de saúde dos professores sendo estes os principais fatores que afetam a chance de ausência, políticas de assistência à saúde ao professor, menores jornadas de trabalho (evitando sobrecarga) e melhoria do ambiente de trabalho podem gerar ganhos para as escolas, reduzindo custos de contratação de temporários e realocação de professores além de garantirem os transbordamentos gerados pela continuidade do projeto pedagógico. Os resultados indicaram que fatores contextuais afetam mais o absenteísmo do que condições individuais o ratificando como um indicador de saúde e condições de trabalho. O segundo ensaio possui como objetivo identificar o impacto da ausência do professor em sala de aula sobre os ganhos individuais dos alunos do 5º e 9º anos da rede pública de educação básica, os resultados obtidos a partir de um modelo de mínimos quadrados em dois estágios indicou que professores efetivos possuem impacto significativo em ambas as disciplinas e, principalmente, com maiores magnitudes para 9º ano em matemática. Por fim, o terceiro ensaio contribui para a literatura do efeito escola a partir da investigação do efeito escola considerando o professor em sala de aula dentro da perspectiva coletiva, ou seja, a nível turma. Os resultados obtidos por meio de um estudo multinível (aluno e turma) para o 5º e 9º ano dos alunos da rede pública de educação básica indicaram a importância da presença do professor e do acompanhamento do professor em sala de aula, corroborando com a premissa do impacto coletivo da presença do professor em sala de aula. Os três ensaios constroem a perspectiva da importância da presença do professor em sala de aula e as políticas públicas que podem ser adotadas garantindo melhoria de qualidade de vida, saúde e condições de trabalho para os profissionais e melhores resultados em proficiência como consequência destas ações individual e coletivamente. The search for factors that affect students achievement is the subject of several studies in the Economics of Education. Although there is a consensus in theoretical research about the importance of the teacher in the classroom, in Brazil, few studies have empirically indicated the size of this impact on individual performance and on the school effect. From an unprecedented nationally representative database, Educatel, it was possible to gather socioeconomic, health, living and working conditions characteristics of Brazilian basic education teachers with data on proficiency, school and student characteristics of the Sistema de Avaliação da Educação Básica. Understanding teacher absenteeism, that is, the absence of the teacher in the classroom as an indicator of health and working conditions, it was possible to investigate which factors are related to the absence of teachers considering the different reasons for absence. The results of the first essay indicate the need for policies focused on improving the working and health conditions of teachers, these being the main factors affecting the chance of absence, teacher health care policies, shorter working hours (avoiding overload) and improvement of the work environment can generate gains for schools, reducing the costs of hiring temporary workers and relocating teachers, in addition to guaranteeing the spillovers generated by the continuity of the pedagogical project. As the results of the second and third essays indicate the absence of the teacher in the classroom has negative impacts on individual and collective results of students. The results indicated that contextual factors affect absenteeism more than individual conditions, confirming it as an indicator of health and working conditions. The second essay aims to identify the impact of the teacher's absence in the classroom on the individual gains of students in the 5th and 9th grades of the public basic education system, the results obtained from a two-stage least squares model indicated that tenured teachers have a significant impact on both subjects and, mainly, with greater magnitudes for the 9th grade in Mathematics. Finally, the third essay contributes to the literature on the school effect based on the investigation of the school effect considering the teacher in the classroom from a collective perspective, that is, at the class level. The results obtained through a multilevel study (student and class) for the 5th and 9th grade of students in the public primary education network indicated the importance of the presence of the teacher and the monitoring of the teacher in the classroom, corroborating the premise of collective impact of the teacher's presence in the classroom. The three essays build the perspective of the importance of the presence of the teacher in the classroom and the public policies that can be adopted ensuring improved quality of life, health and working conditions for professionals and better results in proficiency as a consequence of these individual and collectively.
