SOCIAL status , *SOCIAL integration , *SOCIAL marginality , *SEXUAL intercourse , *SOCIAL norms - Abstract
AbstractWomen’s sexuality as a dimension of embodied identity is shaped and constrained by social norms of gender and age and negotiated by women in complex ways. Discourses of hegemonic bodily normativity ascribe a sexless subjectivity to Russian women in their post-reproductive years, contributing to their social exclusion. At the same time, in modern Russian society a neoliberal concept of “successful active aging” is gradually changing understandings of aging, making later-life sexuality more visible and legitimate. Older women’s sexual activity is often part of a lifestyle involving active care of their appearance and health, allowing them to maintain social inclusion in their post-reproductive years. This article considers how women’s sexuality shifts over time and what alternative (if any) form of sexuality exists besides the “sexless older woman” and the “sexy older woman” in the post-Soviet Russian context. Based on Russian data from the project “Aging and sexuality: transformation of intimacy in a transnational perspective” (The project “Aging and sexuality: transformation of intimacy in a transnational perspective” (under supervision of professor Anna Temkina, EUSPb).), this article discusses growing recognition of the diversity of experiences of later-life sexuality and the vulnerable social position of women in their post-reproductive years outside Western societies. AUTODIDACTICISM ,BILDUNGSROMANS ,INDIVIDUALISM - Abstract
This essay examines how Daphne du Maurier's 1938 novel Rebecca maps the bildungsroman journey of self-development in youth onto the process of self-decline in age, creating an uncanny structure that forfeits the climactic achievement of an ultimate self as bodied forth by the traditional novel. This ultimate self is a fantasy of Western individualism that reflects its historical devaluation of the limitations of the body and the associated necessity of human interdependence and care. The limited selfhood achieved by the narrator undercuts the individualist ideal of perpetual self-expansion and leaves her haunted by its fantasy of aristocratic power, represented by the Manderley estate and its former mistress, the titular first Mrs. de Winter. The concrete losses attributable to the aging process thus double in Rebecca as the subversion of individualism's ideal. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Global mobility is one of the crucial phenomena of our time. Combining the theoretical frameworks of masculinity studies and age studies, the contributors to this volume examine the intersection of cultural exchange, gender and age, exploring ageing masculinities with reference to the key concepts of relationality, kinship and care. The essays analyze transcultural experiences of ageing men from Europe, relationships including the Indian diaspora in the US, Chinese father images in the US-American context and Black British queer kinship, drawing its examples also from Brazilian society and African European contexts.

As social spaces are culturally diverse and digitally networked, the reality of our lives is shaped by processes of globalization and digitization. This leads to the question of whether popular cultures enable or impede (inter-)cultural exchange and global communication. To explore this, the contributors to this volume analyze representations of the intersections of gender and age/ing in cultural and media consumption, such as literature, film, music, and social media. The interconnectedness between gender and aging has been evident since the 1990s and enabled the recognition of age as a cultural category - now is the time to take this intersectional analysis further.

The aim of this paper is to unveil how age is represented through characters in the film La flor de mi secreto (PEDRO ALMODÓVAR, 1995). In particular, it examines the character of Leo Macías--and her literary alter ego, Amanda Gris--her sister Rosa, and their mother Jacinta The methodology is based on character analysis (CHATMAN, CASETTI AND DI CHIO, PÉREZ RUFI, GUARINOS) complemented by Seger's idea of conflict, applicable to the character of Leo Macías and a theoretical framework based on Feminist Film Theory (COLAIZZI, 2006), Queer Theory (DE LAURETIS, 1994) as well as studies on age studies in the audiovisual (ZURIAN, MENENDÉZ and GARCÍA-RAMOS, 2019). It is shown that La flor de mi secreto proposes a rupture with the established social patterns in the representation of female aging through the life expectations of characters in which Almodóvar self-represents and self-references. As per the American Petroleum Institute (API) definition, completion fluid is defined as a brine-, oil-, or gas-based fluid that is used as isolation (kill, separation, inhibition functions, etc.) fluid during the completion of a well. Novel magnesium bromide-based completion fluid exhibits high density and solid free. If design completion fluid is not solid free, then it will cause formation damage and plugging and eroding of tubular and completion equipment. The completion fluid must be high density to provide sufficient density for well control and mechanical stabilization of the wellbore. We have investigated the effects of aging on the rheological properties of completion fluid such as plastic viscosity (PV), apparent viscosity (AV), yield point (YP), gel strength, shear stress, pH, and specific gravity. In this experiment, base salt is taken as magnesium bromide in hexahydrate form and the rheology temperature range is considered 85–185 °F. The rheology properties of formulated 12.91-lb/gal, specific gravity 1.55 completion fluid are investigated before heat roll (BHR) at an aging time (hr.) initial 0 h and after heat roll (AHR) at aging time 16 h for hot-rolled (HR) temperature 320 °F using Bingham plastic rheological model. The experimental results showed that the magnesium bromide-based clear completion fluid exhibits high specific gravity of 1.55, 12.91-lb/gal and pH in alkaline region to mitigate the corrosion issues. This study aims to evaluate the effect of rheological behavior under prolonged exposure time, and temperature (aging process) for reservoir conditions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

While aging and the life-course appear to be normalized processes, the complex construction of age at the intersection of biology, society, and culture remains opaque. This study contributes to a deeper understanding of age(ing) by exploring its construction through the analysis of extraordinary cases. Focusing on life narratives of centenarians and children with progeria, Julia Velten analyzes the way in which these people experience age(ing) and shows how these experiences can contribute to our understanding of age. Situated at the intersection of aging studies and medical humanities, the study explores what extraordinary age(ing) can tell us about aging processes in general.

POPULAR fiction , *EXTRATERRESTRIAL life , *MODERN literature , *LIFE spans , *LIFE expectancy - Abstract
This article follows an increased interest in the octopus in both popular science and fiction. Octopuses have long held fascination and are commonly tied to processes of aging: Even though their life expectancy tends to be lower than that of humans, they are often framed as "old", not only by appearing as mythical creatures from an unknown past but also by appearing wise and intelligent. Whereas the octopus has been framed as Other, prominently by inspiring the aesthetics of alien life forms, recent examples have underlined the possibility of inter-species contact and communication. This article traces these moments of contact and investigates the role of aging in such fictional encounters. By focusing on two recent examples, Shelby Van Pelt's Remarkably Bright Creatures (2022) and Gina Chung's Sea Change (2023), it illustrates the ways that contemporary fiction narratively links the octopus to older age and discusses forms of non-human aging. • Octopuses have found increased engagement in popular fiction in recent years • Fictionalized octopuses are commonly related to processes of aging • Shelby Van Pelt's Remarkably Bright Creatures metaphorically links the aging experience of a 70-year-old widow with that of a giant Pacific octopus • In Gina Chung's Sea Change a mutated octopus confounds estimates of a supposed life span and human concepts of aging [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A novel type of resistive plate chamber, based on diamond-like carbon (DLC) electrodes is under development for background identification in the MEG II experiment. The DLC-RPC is required to have a radiation hardness to mass irradiation since it is planned to be placed in a high-intensity and low-momentum muon beam. In this study, the aging test using a high-intensity X-ray beam was conducted to evaluate the radiation hardness of the DLC-RPC. The accumulated charge due to X-ray irradiation reached about 54 C/ cm 2 , which is approximately half of the one-year irradiation dose expected in the MEG II experiment. As a result, the degradation of the gas gain was observed due to fluorine deposition and insulators formed on the DLC electrodes. In addition, discharges via spacers were also observed repeatedly and interrupted the DLC-RPC operation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A self-declared feminist writer and showrunner, Jenji Kohan is responsible for the acclaimed prison dramedy Orange Is the New Black (Netflix, 2013–2019). One of the most interesting roles within the diverse female ensemble of the show is Galina "Red" Reznikov (Kate Mulgrew). She starts off as the prison chef and a respected mother figure for the young, white inmates as the audience accompanies her in a journey that includes competition for leadership, banishment, negotiation, bartering, disappointment, self-reinvention, revenge, and resistance to personal degradation. Today's media are dominated by the cult of youth and to unrealistic canons of beauty and behavior that particularly impinge on women. In OITNB , Jenji Kohan partially resists the mainstream narrative and offers the possibility of a counter-discourse about aging female figures through some of her characters, most particularly Red. In this paper we dissect Red's evolution with an intersectional feminist approach, to try and demonstrate that Kohan devises the storylines of OITNB within a timidly changing panorama for elderly female characters, making a limited but relevant contribution to the dismantling of static age profiling and negative gender stereotyping. When examining research articles on the aging strategies, four ideals (i.e., successful aging, healthy aging, productive aging and active aging) could be explored by conducting bibliometric analyses. For the literature analysis, general information on the four aging ideals was understood through visualization analysis; the intellectual base and research hotspots were intuitively observed. CiteSpace was used as the method to conduct the co-occurrence analysis of keywords in order to obtain research trends and cutting-edge knowledge in the field of aging-related policies. Subsequently, the study revealed the nature of the link between these four aging ideals and disclosed the connection between their fundamental principles. The study ultimately enhanced the understanding of the diverse contexts that have impacted the way in which these ideals influence policy, which has caused dissimilar strategies for policy development. The study also extended the discussion of the definitions of and relationships between these four ideals with the goal of identifying new directions for aging-related practice and providing innovative insights and references for investigators.

- Abstract
Biosensing by particle motion is a biosensing technology that relies on single-molecule interactions and enables the continuous monitoring of analytes from picomolar to micromolar concentration levels. However, during sensor operation, the signals are observed to change gradually. Here, we present a comprehensive methodology to elucidate the molecular origins of long-term changes in a particle motion sensor, focusing on a competitive sensor design under conditions without flow. Experiments were performed wherein only the particles or only the surfaces were aged in order to clarify how each individual component changes over time. Furthermore, distributions of particle motion patterns and switching activity were studied to reveal how particle populations change over timespans of several days. For a cortisol sensor with anticortisol antibodies on the particles and cortisol analogues on the sensing surface, the leading hypotheses for the long-term changes are (i) that the particles lose antibodies and develop nonspecific interactions and (ii) that analogue molecules dissociate from the sensing surface. The developed methodologies and the acquired insights pave a way for realizing sensors that can operate over long timespans.

Considering the increase in the older population in Turkey, the importance of driving for older people, and the characteristic features of older individuals in traffic settings; a need for identifying and providing solutions to the problems of this special group emerges. For this reason, the current study aims to pinpoint the problematic aspects in traffic for older people and offer solutions to these issues from their perspective through qualitative research methods. In this study, data was collected from 12 male participants who live in Ankara. Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis was chosen as the analytical method. Results of the analysis yielded two superordinate themes named "Three problems of traffic" and "Solutions of traffic" in which older drivers mentioned the factors that threaten traffic safety and the practices that can improve the traffic environment, respectively. Older drivers form a special group due to their mutual/similar characteristics. In the current study, experiences of a sample of this special group are investigated firsthand and as detailed as possible. A number of barriers against older people living a high-quality life through actively engaging in social life are identified and solutions are offered as to how these barriers can be eliminated. As old age garners more attention in the time of COVID-19, this roundtable discussion brings together scholars from three different areas within aging studies to define the field's terms and map out some of its contours and potential future directions. Stephen Katz draws on poststructuralist theory, feminism, and theories of materiality and embodiment in his historically informed work in critical gerontology. Kavita Sivaramakrishnan's research in global public health and South Asian history brought her to the study of physiological old age as it intersects with social histories in the global South, thus critiquing Eurocentric epistemologies of aging. Pat Thane is a social historian interested in old age in relation to gender, labor, inequality, and welfare states, as well as the long arc of the meaning of old age in theWest. Summary: A single‐production batch of commercial LiFePO4‐graphite Li‐ion batteries (2.5 Ah) were investigated using electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). Four batches, consisting of three cells each, were cycled between 100% and 0% state of charge (SoC), with EIS measurements acquired between 90% and 20% SoC. Cell batches were initially investigated at 25°C, stressing the importance of repeatability, reproducibility, careful selection of AC perturbation type and amplitude, frequency range and the need for data quality checks (eg, through calculation of Kramers‐Kronig residuals). Cells were (a) calendar, and (b) cycle aged at 0°C, 25°C and 40°C. Data are presented as Nyquist plots, analyzed by distribution of relaxation time analysis, and fitted using a proposed equivalent circuit. The available literature was evaluated to provide the best experimental parameters for reliable data acquisition. This further provided comments on issues worth considering prior to embarking on an EIS‐based calendar or cycle aging study of commercial Li‐ion batteries. The need for a metrological foundation to such measurements is stressed. This work provides a number of starting‐point parameters for newcomers to these types of investigations.

- Abstract
As part of Cultural Studies, Age/ing Studies in Communication is a quite recent academic discipline in Spain, Europe, and Latin America. In the last decade, the American and British academic influences, as well as the growing awareness and need to focus on age/ing, have allowed academics to start translating their research interest into monographs, specially edited volumes, and articles in scientific journals. In addition, the global pandemic of 2020 brought older people to the forefront of mass media as victims of the COVID-19 disease itself and of another social ailment: ageism in its various manifestations. This article explains this ageism and the progress made in recent years, particularly in Spain, in the fight against ageist stereotypes and the discrimination of older people. It also presents the articles contributing to this special issue, pioneers in the Spanish Age/ ing Studies research field.

This article examines arts-based interventions that seek to explore the ways in which the visual and performing arts can dismantle societal, disciplinary, and cultural barriers and create healthier communities. Guided by Judith Butler's discourse on the ethics of representability, particularly in relation to the representation of fragility and precariousness, and Clare Hemmings' notion of affective solidarity based on dissonance, this article analyzes two socially engaged, arts-based projects. The first took place in a medium-security men's prison in Orlando, Florida, and the second in a community art center serving seniors with dementia in New Smyrna Beach, Florida. Using qualitative data, including surveys and interviews, this article investigates the ways in which collaborative practices enrich student learning and offers scholars a theoretical framework for future research. A study was conducted to determine the potential of linear low‐density polyethylene (LLDPE)‐PET fiber composite films to be used as an agricultural mulching film. Incorporation of 1 wt% PET fiber into the LLDPE matrix improved the tensile strength and percent elongation. The water vapor transmission rate was significantly lowered because of the presence of PET fibers. Also, the effect of continuous exposure of films to pesticide and UV light has been reported in terms of deterioration of mechanical and optical properties of the films. Differential scanning calorimetry shows that there is no effect of the presence of PET fibers on processing temperature of LLDPE at optimized loading; however, it was found that it lowers the latent heat of fusion and crystallization. An attractive tracer of water-surface interactions in humidity exposure experiments are the stable hydrogen and oxygen isotopes in water vapor, though the conventional method of using salt saturated aqueous solutions to control humidity is likely to exert strong effects on the H and O stable isotope composition of the vapor. The magnitude of these effects are virtually unknown for hyper-saline solutions near salt saturation and beyond. Here we explore the hydrogen and oxygen stable isotope effects of salt-water mixtures from dilute to the salt saturation point and beyond for BaCl 2 , CaCl 2 , KCl, K 2 SO 4 , MgCl 2 , NaBr, NaCl, and NaI salts, of which the O isotope results on BaCl 2 , K 2 SO 4 , and NaBr are the first to be reported, and the first for H with BaCl 2 . We find that vapor humidity levels, and hydrogen and oxygen isotope effects in the vapor generated from dilute solutions to salt-saturated mixtures increase in magnitude by predictable linear trends. In the case of hydrogen isotope salt effects, the cation identity matters, as the effect becomes stronger with decreasing size and increasing charge (increasing ionic potential) in the sequence of: K < Na < Ba < Ca < Mg. For oxygen, the cation effect becomes stronger with increasing ionic potential, in the order of Na < Ba < K < Ca < Mg (irrespective of sign). Hydrogen and oxygen isotope effects in vapor from salt concentrations greater than the salt saturation point do not behave as systematically, with some of the salts displaying no increase in isotope effects beyond saturation, while others show an increase in isotope effects beyond salt saturation, especially in the case of hydrogen. We make specific recommendations on the salts that exert hydrogen and oxygen isotope effects with the least magnitude and most predictability for humidity levels from 26% to 92%. The use of salt solutions to create vapor at less than 100% and with specific δ 2 H and δ 18 O values that differ from that defined by the global meteoric water relationship also seems possible. Hyper-saline surface waters can exist at and above saturation, and thus these isotope effects may be present in them, as well as in minerals that form from these waters. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In the present investigation, long term service performance of silicone rubber based polymeric insulators under DC stress with controlled climatic conditions is attempted. Simultaneous application of UV, thermal, humidity with DC electrical stress is applied to polymeric insulators enclosed in a specially fabricated climatic chamber. The stresses are applied for 1000 h for an adopted cycle to simulate close service life conditions. The leakage current is regularly monitored and recorded. After the experimentation, samples of the aged specimen are subjected for post analysis and psycho-chemical analysis like Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) to monitor morphological changes, Energy Dispersive X-Ray analysis (EDAX) to observe elemental presence over the surface, Fourier Transform Infra-Red (FTIR) spectroscopy to examine chemical changes in the material, Thermo-gravimetric analysis (TGA) to understand the role of filler in aged insulator specimen and loss of Loss of hydrophobicity was measured. Investigations with long duration DC stress reveal material degradation, depolymerization and loss of ATH; this could result in low thermal stability and accelerate the thermal erosion and early failures. The rapid aging of the U.S. population has brought with it the challenge of preparing effective leaders in aging services/policy. These leaders need a fresh cognitive and empathic understanding of the complex needs of older adults and those who work with them. With its experiential and integrative approach, contemplative pedagogies are ideally suited for preparing aging services leaders. Contemplative pedagogies help learners interact with course material in ways that deeply engage students, disrupt habitual ways of thinking, and encourage innovative approaches to aging services/policy issues. Given the increasing popularity of hybrid and online courses, contemplative pedagogies could enhance learners’ satisfaction with and the quality of learning in these courses. This article provides a description of contemplative pedagogies and embodied cognition research and theory as a theoretical framework for them. The article discusses the ways in that contemplative pedagogies have been incorporated in two undergraduate management of aging services courses. Student responses to the use of contemplative pedagogies and directions for future research are presented. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

British contemporary novelists Penelope Lively and Angela Carter are well known for their contribution to narrative experimentation through which they challenged established cultural discourses in relation to gender and class. This article will focus on Lively's Moon Tiger and Carter's Wise Children with the main aim of analyzing how the fictional narratives of two older female protagonists who have lived throughout the twentieth century contribute to the demythologizing of limiting stereotypes and beliefs attached to female aging and, as an extension, old age. In this sense, the playful and subjective nature of the narrative and the temporal disruptions employed by the authors highlight the constructed pathos of a life divided by stages that follow a number of cultural constructs that are limiting and, ultimately, distant from human nature. Je m’intéresse enfin à certains enjeux de pouvoir qui les traversent ainsi qu’à leur force performative., This doctoral research-creation, one of whose main objectives is to test the heuristic scope of writing as research, is made up of a collection entitled Murmurations and a reflective essay that I envision as my Carnet de voyage-thèse, or logbook/thesis. These two intertwined components are an outgrowth of the writing experiments in which I engaged with three other women, namely Catherine, Fanie, and France. As part of my thesis, I invited the four of us to “write our agings”. Murmurations is a collection (destined to be published) of eight texts that my co-authors and I produced following in absentia correspondence we set out to pursue with the people we respectively consider to be our fathers. All of them shared the commonality of having been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s or a related illness (generally associated with aging and, more specifically, with brain aging) within the 10 years prior to the start of my research. Below I have reproduced (freely translated into English) the back cover of Murmurations, the collection of writings which I edited, as the researcher and project initiator: Murmurations Multiple and multifaceted writings captured in mid-flight. Collected here are writings by France Brûlé, Fanie Pelletier, Catherine Lépine-Lafrance, and Karine Bellerive, which together make up a captivating choreography. To write our agings. To write our agings, changing relationships with ourselves, our fathers, inheritances and mourning, literature, writing, time, the world... Located at the crossroads of cultural studies and aging studies, I take up in my logbook/thesis the various issues of aging that came to light through my own and my co-authors’ writing experiments. The reflection that I develop in this reflective essay is at odds with strictly chronological, and therefore reductive, conceptions of aging. My entire project is underpinned by a resolutely feminist epistemology and quite conversely sets out to show the heterogeneity and rough edges of aging—beyond outlooks of aging seen a priori as a decline or, at the other end of the spectrum, exhortations of successful aging. I understand aging as being informed by a number of discourses, practices, and power relations, and partaking in multiple temporalities. My logbook/thesis is interspersed with images and divided into six parts, which can be approached in any (dis)order. The Lignes de départ or opening lines, however, offer some keys for reading the text. They are followed by the Station Femmes et littératures (women and literatures station), the Station Deuils (mourning station), Passages et passagers : écrire dans la maison du père (passages and passengers: writing in the father’s house), the Station Héritières et héritage (heiresses and inheritance station), and the Station Écritures (writings station). In the opening lines, I outline my project, i.e., the questions and concerns that gave rise to it, as well as the choices on which its methodology is based. I also give a brief overview of the essay as a whole. This is followed by a presentation of my co-authors, Catherine, Fanie, and France. Finally, I briefly discuss the epistemological, ethical, and political considerations that guided me throughout my research. My work in the Station Femmes et littératures is based on my appropriation of Raymond Williams’ cultural materialism, and more specifically the concept of structure of feeling. I reflect on how our (Catherine’s, Fanie’s, France’s, and my own) literary practices are situated within literature and women’s literatures in particular. At the same time, I also observe the power relations and value systems inhabiting these literatures. In the Station Deuils, I attempt to problematize and historicize the mourning that I have seen Catherine, Fanie, France, and myself face through our writings. I am interested in what constitutes this mourning as grief and how we negotiate this grief through our writings. In Passages et passagers : écrire dans la maison du père, I pose the question of the father. This entire section in a sense places fathers under erasure, in order to ponder them beyond common sense (i.e., largely based on an ideology of blood relations). I then look at fathers and daughter-father relationships that have been written about by women authors during different time periods, as well as the fathers and the daughter-father relationships that Catherine, Fanie, France, and I have written ourselves. I look specifically at what emerges from these writings on fathers. My reflective writing practice in the Station Héritières et héritage is inspired by Maggie Nelson’s practice in Les Argonautes (2015). I examine the work of inheritance: the issues that this work raises, its underlying constraints and freedoms, and how it orients my co-authors and me. I adopt a Derridean perspective in the Station Écritures in order to grasp writing as a trace, as an inscription. I break down the concept to show how different approaches to writing raise different questions and lead me to think about different issues, many of which are connected with issues of aging. I first explain how our (Catherine’s, Fanie’s, France’s, and my own) writing experiments participate in care of the self and others. I then discuss their inherent materiality. Finally, I investigate some of their associated power issues and their performative power.
