Enantiospecific total synthesis of the crinipellin mentioned in the title was accomplished. In the present synthesis cyclopentane ring in campholenaldehyde was identified as the B-ring, two intramolecular rhodium carbenoid CH insertion reactions were employed for the construction of the A and C rings, and an intramolecular Michael addition reaction was utilized for the construction of the D-ring of crinipellin.

The enantiospecific first total synthesis of the enantiomer of the irregular sesquiterpene from Ligusticumgrayi allo­thapsenol, starting from the readily available monoterpene (R)-carvone, is described, which confirmed the assumed absolute configuration of the natural product.

Enantiospecific first total synthesis of the angular triquinane sesquiterpene (6S,7R)-silphiperfolan-6-ol has been accomplished, starting from 2-(3-isopropenyl-2-methylene-1-methylcyclopent-1-yl)acetic acid (readily available from (R)-limonene) employing an efficient, regioselective intramolecular rhodium carbenoid insertion into the CH bond of a tertiary methyl group as the key step.

The enantiospecific total synthesis of silphiperfol-6-ene has been accomplished starting from the readily available monoterpene (R)-limonene, employing a rhodium carbenoid insertion into the CH bond of a tertiary methyl group. An enantiospecific formal total synthesis of the 5-8-5 tricyclic diterpene fusicoauritone has been accomplished, starting from 5-isopropyl-2-methylcyclopent-1-enemethanol [available in three steps from (R)-dihydrolimonene] employing two ring-closing-metathesis reactions for the construction of the eight- and five-membered rings.

Enantiospecific synthesis of the tricyclic core structure present in the biologically active natural products tricycloillicinone, ialibinones, and takaneones, starting from the readily available campholenaldehyde employing a transannular RCM reaction as the key step, has been accomplished.

Enantioselective syntheses of bicyclo[3.3.0]octan-3-one, bicyclo[3.2.1]octan-3-one and bicyclo[3.2.1]octan-2-one derivatives were accomplished by employing a chiron based approach, using intramolecular rhodium carbenoid C–H insertion, acid catalysed cyclisation of α-diazo ketone and intramolecular type II carbonyl ene reactions as key steps.

A formal total synthesis of the sesquiterpene (±)-herbertenediol and its dimers mastigophorenes A–D has been accomplished, starting from vanillin via 2,3-dimethoxy-5-methylbenzaldehyde. A combination of Claisen rearrangement and ring-closing metathesis reactions were employed for the generation of the two vicinal quaternary carbons on a cyclopentane ring.

Starting from cyclohexanecarboxylic acid, a combination of an Ireland ester Claisen rearrangement and RCM reactions was exploited for an efficient construction of spiro[5.5]undecanes containing a quaternary carbon atom adjacent to the spirocentre and the methodology was extended to complete total syntheses of three chamigrenes.

The first total synthesis of (±)-lagopodin A and a formal total synthesis of enokipodins A and B is described. The requisite precursors containing two vicinal quaternary carbon atoms were assembled employing Claisen rearrangement and an RCM reaction as key steps starting from 2,5-dimethoxy-4-methylacetophenone.

The first total synthesis of $(+)-2\beta-hydroxysolanascone$, the aglycon of the phytoalexin $2\beta-hydroxysolanascone-\beta-glucopyranoside$ isolated from flue-cured tobacco leaves (N. tabacum L., OCL), and its 2,10-diepi- and $2\propto-epimers$ has been accomplished, starting from the readily available monoterpene (R)-carvone.

An acid catalysed rearrangement was employed for the enantiospecific conversion of isotwistanol to tricyclo5.2.1.0(4.8)]-decanes, which provided support for the proposed biosynthesis of allopupukeananes from pupukeananes. An enantiospecific total synthesis of patchouli alcohol, starting from the readily available monoterpene (R)-carvone, has been accomplished. A tandem double Michael reaction-alkylation sequence and single electron mediated 6-endo trig cyclisation reaction have been employed as key steps.

Enantiospecific total synthesis of the phytoalexins, solavetivone, anhydro-β-rotunol, solanascone, and dehydrosolanascone, starting from the readily available monoterpene, (R)-carvone has been accomplished.

Acid catalysed reaction of carvone epoxide 2 resulted in dimericproducts 3 and 4, in contrast to the expected ring contraction product.Reaction of \beta-methylcarvone epoxides 8 and 11 with acids furnished 2-acetyl-4-isopropenylcyclopentanones 9 and 14 containing a stereodefined quaternary carbon atom. On the other hand, the reaction of epoxides 8 and 11 with boron trifluoride etherate lacks the stereoselectivity and in addition, anti-epoxide 8 furnished lactone 18 via an unusual deep seated rearrangement.
