The 130Te(20Ne,20O)130Xe double charge exchange reaction was measured for the first time at very forward angles with the MAGNEX magnetic spectrometer at INFN-LNS. The study, performed at beam energy of 306 MeV, is part of a systematic exploration promoted by the NUMEN project. The last aims to measure specific reaction cross sections to provide experimentally driven information about nuclear matrix elements of interest in the context of neutrinoless double beta decay.

The 40Ca(18O,18F)40K single charge exchange (SCE) reaction is explored at an incident energy of 275 MeV and analyzed consistently by collecting the elastic scattering and inelastic scattering data under the same experimental conditions. Full quantum-mechanical SCE calculations of the direct mechanism are performed by including microscopic nuclear structure inputs and adopting either a bare optical potential or a coupled channel equivalent polarization potential (CCEP) constrained by the elastic and inelastic data. The direct SCE mechanism describes the magnitude and shape of the angular distributions rather well, thus suggesting the suppression of sequential multi-nucleon transfer processes.

NUMEN proposes cross sections measurements of Heavy-Ion double charge exchange reactions as an innovative tool to access the nuclear matrix elements, entering the expression of the life time of Neutrinoless double beta decay (0νββ). A key aspect of the projectis the use at INFN-Laboratori Nazionali del Sud (LNS) of the Superconducting Cyclotron (CS) for the acceleration of the required high resolution and low emittance heavy-ion beams and of MAGNEX large acceptance magnetic spectrometer for the detection of the ejectiles. The experimental measurements of double charge exchange reactions induced by heavy ions present a number of challenging aspects, since such reactions are characterized by very low cross sections. First experimental results give encouraging indication on the capability to access quantitative information towards the determination of the Nuclear Matrix Elements for 0νββ decay.

New experimental measurements of charge state distributions produced by a 20Ne10+ beam at 15 MeV/u colliding on various thin solid targets are presented. The use of the MAGNEX magnetic spectrometer enabled measurements of the 8+ charge state down to fractions of a few 10−5. The use of different post-stripper foils located downstream of the main target is explored, showing that low Z materials are particularly effective to shift the charge state distributions towards fully stripped conditions. The dependence on the foil thickness is also studied and discussed.

Identifying food plant germplasm with superior seed nutritional values is important in helping alleviate nutrient mineral deficiencies. Faba bean (Vicia faba), a highly nutritious, protein-rich legume, is an important crop plant grown in the U.S. and globally. Therefore, the goals of this study were to quantify the levels of K, P, Ca, Mg, S, Zn, Fe, Cu, B, and Mn in the seeds of 90 faba bean genotypes. Additionally, we evaluated percent daily values (%DV) based on U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recommendations. Macro- and micronutrient concentrations varied among faba bean genotypes. Seed Zn was positively correlated with seed P and Cu contents. Moreover, the Mn level was greater in faba beans with the highest concentrations of P, S, and Ca. The results of the present study demonstrate that there is significant variation in seed mineral nutrients among faba beans. We identified a set of faba beans with superior nutrient composition that could be potentially useful in genetic improvement studies and in addressing global future food security challenges. These findings will help global food security by achieving the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal Two, which is to achieve food security, improve nutrition, and promote sustainable agriculture.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the tessellation performance of 8th-grade students and factors affecting their performance. Student performances have been examined in two dimensions: identification and completion of tessellation. In this context, a diagnostic test containing two main questions with the content of determining whether the motifs are tessellations and completing the tessellations was prepared. The test was applied to 40 eighth grade students. The findings show that students exhibited good performances in determining whether a pattern is tessellation and their performances were close to each other according to tessellation types. It was found that students' completion performances of the tessellation varied according to the tessellation types. In addition, the factors affecting these performances were also revealed as a result of the study.

Concern about graduation rates in higher education has led universities to offer courses that help students develop success skills. Scientist Life Skills, a new course for freshman at Florida A&M University, focuses on helping students matriculate into majors via development of growth mindset, grit, and critical thinking. Here, we assessed the outcomes of this course and explored the associations between building life skills and student success. A series of mindset, grit, and critical-thinking assessment measures were used to collect data before and after the course. Our results showed that the new course achieved its intended goals of providing STEM students with a set of tools that help them seamlessly transition into the university and successfully matriculate through their majors. Specifically, the course design significantly moved students toward a growth-mindset, increased their critical thinking, and their second-semester grade point averages (GPAs). This model life skills course can be adopted in non-STEM areas as well.

This paper introduces a percentage activity based on the context of "Black Friday" discounts. The aim of the study was to reveal the existing and new conceptions of the 7th grade students regarding the topic of percentage calculation. The activity was designed considering the students' prior knowledge in the concept of "Ratio and Proportion" as well as in "Percentages." The participants of the study were 17 seventh grade students attending a state middle school in a province in the Eastern Black Sea region of Turkey during the academic year 2019-2020. The data were collected using a worksheet created by the researchers based on the realistic mathematics education framework. After implementing the activity, a form was completed by the students to find out their views on the activity. As the present study reveals the students' conceptions and mistakes, it offers suggestions for future implementation and development to researchers and teachers.

This research aims to determine the perceptions of middle school pre-service mathematics teachers regarding the concept of "mathematical thinking" through the usage of metaphors. The phenomenology method, which is one of the qualitative research methods, is adopted in this study. Data of the research was obtained by the pre-service mathematics teachers filling the sentences such as "Mathematical thinking is like ... because …". The data was analysed using a content analysis method. The statements of pre-service teachers starting with "because" were coded. Then relevant codes were united together, and eight categories were developed. Some codes were taken as they were, whilst some were combined and thus, 54 features were formed. At the end of the research, it has been determined that the pre-service teachers have produced 156 different metaphors about mathematical thinking. In addition, it was determined that the metaphors, categories, and features concerning mathematical thinking had a positive meaning in general. Besides, it was determined that the perceptions of grades 1st-4th pre-service mathematics teachers centred upon four different categories. Finally, it was concluded that mathematical thinking was considered to be a process-oriented concept by females and a result-oriented concept by males. Metaphors, categories, and features revealed within the scope of the study may guide researchers in their studies on mathematical thinking.

We have investigated the effect of the Ni substitution on the local structure and the valence electronic states of the SrFe2−xNixAs2 (x = 0.00, 0.16, and 0.23) superconductor with a multi-edge extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) and X-ray absorption near edge structure (XANES) spectroscopy. The As K-edge and Fe K-edge EXAFS measurements in the two polarizations (E‖ab and E‖c) show a clear change in the local structure with Ni concentration. The near-neighbor bondlengths and the related mean-square relative displacements (MSRDs) decrease as the Ni content increases. The polarized XANES spectra at the As, Fe and Ni K edges reveal a systematic change in the anisotropy of the valence electronic structure. The results suggest that the quasi 2D electronic structure of this system tends to become more isotropic as the Ni content increases. The local structure and the valence electronic states are discussed in the frame of the evolving electronic transport of the SrFe2−xNixAs2 system.

The purpose of this study is to reveal opinions of prospective teachers about national and universal values specific to mathematics education. 230 prospective teachers attending 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th year Mathematics Teaching Program, Faculty of Education, Giresun University during fall semester of 2015-2016 academic year. The study utilizes the qualitative research approach. The data were analyzed via the descriptive and content analysis methods. Themes were obtained as a result of the data analysis: love and value, righteousness, protecting cultural heritage, placing importance on aesthetics, fairness, patriotism, humility, leadership, creativity and success, sharing, independent and free thinking. It was found as a result of the study that prospective teachers sufficiently internalized national and universal values specific to mathematics education. In conclusion, it is expected that prospective teachers, who will be implementers of the curriculum in near future, possess values specific to mathematics education.

In this study, it is aimed to examine the perceptions of prospective mathematics teacher about the concept of "intelligent games" through metaphors. Phenomenology method was used in the research. The participants of the research consisted of a total of 218 prospective teachers who studied in Department of Elementary School Mathematics Teacher Program during the spring semester of 2016-2017 academic years. Data of the research are obtained by two sentences in the form of "Intelligent games are like ... because …". Data was analysed by a content analysis method. The statements of prospective teachers starting with "because" were coded. Then relevant codes were united together, and seven categories were developed. Some codes were taken as it is, some were combined and thus, 42 features were formed. At the end of the study, it has been determined that the prospective teachers have produced 143 different metaphors about intelligent games. Besides, it was determined that metaphors, categories, and features concerning intelligent games had a positive meaning in general. In addition, it was seen that perceptions of prospective mathematics teachers centered upon a different category in every grade. Finally, it was concluded that intelligent games were considered a rule, stage, accumulation and outcome oriented concept by female prospective teachers and a concept providing/producing knowledge, solving problems and guiding by male prospective teachers. Metaphors can be used as an important tool in determining and revealing the perceptions of the teachers and students about the concept of intelligent games.

This study is an explanatory study, which follows a qualitative methodology and aims to reveal the explanations of prospective mathematics teachers for the potential misconceptions of secondary school students in relation to the concept of symmetry and the correction of such misconceptions. The study group consisted of a total of 26 prospective middle school mathematics teachers, who were senior students. The data of the study were obtained from the open-ended test prepared by the researchers. Following the data analysis, it was found out that the majority of the participants failed to identify the mistakes of students and suggested the ways to "letter the corners of the shape and measure the distance based on the axis of symmetry" in order to correct these mistakes. Moreover, the study notably observed that the participants adopted practical solutions such as the use of a mirror, paper folding, and the use of unit squares more in teaching the concept of symmetry. It may be stated that the prospective teachers, in this way, overlooked the development of conceptual knowledge in students.

The aim of this study is to reveal the benefits gained from "Special Training Methods II" course and the problems prospective mathematics teachers encountered with it. The case study method was used in the study. The participants in the study were 34 prospective mathematics teachers studying at a Primary School Mathematics Education Department. The data collection tools were a form composed of open-ended questions and semi-structured interviews. Descriptive analysis of the quantitative data was carried out. In the "Special Teaching Methods II" course, beginning in the spring term of the 2015-2016 academic year, teaching activities on "multiple intelligences", "discovery", "group work", "problem-solving", "history of mathematics" and "computer-assisted teaching" were developed and implemented. It was concluded that these activities helped students like mathematics more, understand the importance of helping each other and cooperation and have more enjoyable lessons, as well as aiding their cognitive, social and emotional development. It was also found that through these activities participants improved their belief in themselves and increased their confidence regarding teaching mathematics. The participants also faced with some difficulties during the application process. They mostly mentioned that preparing worksheets was time-consuming, finding a school to perform the activity was hard and students were reluctant.

The present work is inherent to the NUMEN project that aims at providing data-driven information for the nuclear matrix elements of the neutrinoless double beta decay through the study of heavy-ion induced double charge exchange reactions. This is a formidable task since during a nuclear collision, the same final states may be populated through various reaction mechanisms. In this respect, understanding the degree of competition between successive nucleon transfer and charge exchange reactions is crucial for the proper description of the meson-exchange mechanism. To this purpose, the reaction dynamics in the 18O+48Ti collision were sought by measuring a plethora of reaction channels under the same experimental conditions. The 48Ti was chosen as target since it is the daughter nucleus of 48Ca in double beta decay. The relevant experiment was performed at the MAGNEX facility of INFN-LNS in Catania. In this contribution, the status of the analysis for the 48Ti(18O,18F)48Sc single charge exchange reaction will be presented.

The 4He+4He inelastic scattering was experimentally investigated in an exclusive measurement at the MAGNEX facility of INFN - LNS, aiming at characterizing the 0+2 resonant state of 4He. Both the 4He+4He→4He+4He∗→4He+3H+p and 4He+4He→4He+4He∗→4He+3He+n configurations were measured together with an elastic scattering measurement in a wide angular range. In the present article, the experimental setup, the measurement and the data reduction are briefly described, pointing out the significance of an exclusive inelastic scattering measurement to suppress the background originating from other processes.

The search for neutrino-less double beta decay has attracted much interest in the last years due to the extraordinary consequences that could derive from its observation. In the view to provide experimental information on the nuclear matrix elements involved in the expression of neutrino-less double beta decay half-life, the NUMEN project is measuring cross-sections of double charge exchange and other quasi-elastic nuclear reactions using the MAGNEX magnetic spectrometer. In particular, the newly proposed multichannel approach, applied both to the experimental and theoretical analysis, will be discussed.

The study of a network of nuclear reactions populated in the 18O + 12C collision is the main topic of the present paper. It was performed to test nuclear structure and reaction theories in describing the full reaction mechanism occurring in the (18O, 18F) single charge exchange nuclear reaction. From the experimental side, an 18O beam was produced at 275 MeV incident energy by the K800 superconducting cyclotron and the MAGNEX magnetic spectrometer was used at the Laboratori Nazionali del Sud of the Istituto Nazionale di Fisica Nucleare to momentum analyse the ejectiles produced in the nuclear reactions within the same experimental setup. From the theoretical side, the proposed approach consists of analysing the whole network of nuclear reactions in the framework of a unique comprehensive and coherent theoretical calculation. This holistic approach, applied both to the experimental and theoretical analysis, is the main feature and novelty of the work presented here.

The study of single-nucleon transfer reactions for the 18O+48Ti system was pursued at the energy of 275 MeV as part of a more systematic study which is undertaken within the NUMEN and NURE experimental campaigns. The aim is to measure the complete set of available reaction network which are characterized by the same initial and final-state wavefunctions as the more suppressed double charge exchange reactions. Understanding the degree of competition between successive nucleon transfer and double charge exchange reactions is crucial for the description of the meson-exchange mechanism. In this respect, angular distribution measurements for one- and twonucleon transfer reactions for the 18O+48Ti system were carried out at theMAGNEX facility of INFN-LNS in Catania. An overview of the data analysis for the 48Ti(18O,19F)47Sc and 48Ti(18O,17O)49Ti reactions will be presented.

We have investigated the in-plane local structure of the Ba0.6K0.4Fe2As2 superconductor by polarized Fe K-edge extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) measurements with temperature. The near neighbor bond distances and their stiffness, measured by polarized EXAFS in two orthogonal directions, are different suggesting in-plane anisotropy of the atomic displacements and local orthorhombicity in the title system. The X-ray absorption near edge structure (XANES) spectra reveal anisotropy of valence electronic structure that changes anomalously below ~100 K. The local iron magnetic moment, measured by Fe Kβ X-ray emission spectroscopy (XES), increases below the anomalous temperature and shows a decrease in the vicinity of the superconducting transition temperature (Tc ~ 36 K). The results provide a clear evidence of coupled local lattice, electronic and magnetic degrees of freedom to induce possible nematic fluctuations in an optimally hole doped iron-based superconductor. Objectives Methods Results Proposed Concept Antidepressants used by patients with bipolar disorder have been associated with destabilization with an increase in mania, depression, and cycling. The most commonly proposed mechanism, that antidepressants ‘overshoot’ their antidepressant effect to create a manic or mixed state, is unlikely since antidepressants have actually been found to be ineffective in treating bipolar depression. Beginning with known bipolar‐specific pathophysiologic abnormalities provides the greatest likelihood of insight.PubMed was queried with ‘bipolar’, ‘sodium’, ‘intracellular sodium’, ‘serotonin 3’, ‘5HT3’, ‘5‐hydroxytryptamine type 3 receptors’, and ‘antidepressant’ either individually or in combination.Pathologic mood states (both mania and depression) are associated with increased intracellular sodium (Na) concentrations that depolarize the resting membrane potential to increase cellular excitability (mania) or cause depolarization block (depression). Stimulation of the serotonin (5HT) receptors depolarizes the post‐synaptic neuron. Stimulation of 5HT3 may be of particular importance since it is coupled to a cation channel that directly depolarizes the membrane. These effects directly impact the physiology of patients with bipolar disorder to alter neuronal excitability in a fashion that worsens both mania and depression.The most consistently observed biological abnormality in individuals going through mania or bipolar depression involves a decline in Na pump activity, with consequent elevation of intracellular Na levels. Antidepressant treatment potentiates this, particularly by activation of 5HT3. This hypothesis can be tested by coadministering a 5HT3 antagonist (e.g., vortioxetine or ondansetron) to achieve blockade of that receptor while treating bipolar depression with a serotoninergic antidepressant. Considering the update of curricula and the importance of problem solving skills in mathematics education; the need for examining the problems in mathematics textbooks in the context of presentation, content, and solution becomes a current issue. In this study, it was aimed to designate the problem types used in middle school mathematics textbooks and to determine whether the problem types used are dependent on class levels or not. The study was conducted by using the document analysis method. Data were analyzed by using content analysis method. In terms of presentation, it was observed that textbooks involved the problems rather verbal, not including quantitative data, and short. When contents of the problems were considered, it was observed that the use of the problems routine, not involving missing and irrelevant data, being curriculum dependent, and not being far from daily life is quite high. On the other hand, in terms of solution, it was observed that textbooks included the problem types which are easy, not requiring much calculation, and not involving different strategies more. Types of problems used in the textbooks can be enriched in the context of presentation, content, and solution to improve achievements and problem solving skills of students in mathematics classrooms.

The aim of this study is to determine the 7th grade students' achievements in mathematical patterns presented by figures, tables, number sequences, and word problems. This research is a situation determination study where quantitative methodology is used. The sample of the study consisted of 47 female and 50 male students, totally 97 students from 7th grades in Giresun city on 2015-2016 academic year. Pattern topic oriented 7 questions were used as the data gathering tool. The questions which focused on the attainments of pattern topic were prepared by the researcher. It was determined that students could perform specialization in figural patterns but they couldn't reach a generalization. In other words, it was observed that students could find the required steps according to a given rule and so they could easily reach the situation which involved operational knowledge. Also, it was seen that although students found the number of figures in the next step of the pattern, they couldn't find the general rule that represented the pattern. Another result of the study was that students could recognize patterns of number sequences but they couldn't find the general term of the pattern. Lastly, it was determined that students couldn't understand patterns which were represented as word problems and they failed at these kind of pattern questions but they had success in pattern questions represented by tables. In this context, it can be offered to give much place to representation forms of patterns by figures, tables, number sequences, and word problems while students are given experiences of patterns.
