We study how stronger noise can enhance the entanglement in inhomogeneously monitored quantum systems. We consider a free fermions model composed of two coupled chains - a system chain and an ancilla chain, each subject to its own different noise - and explore the dynamics of entanglement within the system chain under different noise intensities. Our results demonstrate that, contrary to the detrimental effects typically associated with noise, certain regimes of noise on the ancilla can significantly enhance entanglement within the system. Numerical simulations demonstrate the robustness of such entanglement enhancement across various system sizes and noise parameters. This enhancement is found to be highly dependent on the hopping strength in the ancilla, suggesting that the interplay between unitary dynamics and noise can be tuned to optimize the entanglement of a quantum system., Comment: 17 pages, 9 figures

In recent years there has been great interest towards optical cavities as a tool to manipulate the properties and phases of embedded quantum materials. Due to the Purcell effect, a cavity changes the photon phase space and thus the rate of electromagnetic transitions within the material, modifying the exchange rate of heat radiation with the photon environment. Here, I derive a simple expression for the radiative heat power absorbed by the material, investigate how it changes in the presence of a cavity and show that it is enhanced dramatically for appropriate cavity geometries. I compare this effect with typical energy dissipation processes, provide a criterion to establish its impact on the temperature of a material coupled to the cavity and apply it to 1T-TaS$_2$., Comment: 6+6 pages 3+2 figures

Recently there has been an intense effort to understand measurement induced transitions, but we still lack a good understanding of non-Markovian effects on these phenomena. To that end, we consider two coupled chains of free fermions, one acting as the system of interest, and one as a bath. The bath chain is subject to Markovian measurements, resulting in an effective non-Markovian dissipative dynamics acting on the system chain which is still amenable to numerical studies in terms of quantum trajectories. Within this setting, we study the entanglement within the system chain, and use it to characterize the phase diagram depending on the ladder hopping parameters and on the measurement probability. For the case of pure state evolution, the system is in an area law phase when the internal hopping of the bath chain is small, while a non-area law phase appears when the dynamics of the bath is fast. The non-area law exhibits a logarithmic scaling of the entropy compatible with a conformal phase, but also displays linear corrections for the finite system sizes we can study. For the case of mixed state evolution, we instead observe regions with both area, and non-area scaling of the entanglement negativity. We quantify the non-Markovianity of the system chain dynamics and find that for the regimes of parameters we study, a stronger non-Markovianity is associated to a larger entanglement within the system.

We study the quantum dynamics of a many-body system subject to coherent evolution and coupled to a non-Markovian bath. We propose a technique to unravel the non-Markovian dynamics in terms of quantum jumps, a connection that was so far only understood for single-body systems. We develop a systematic method to calculate the probability of a quantum trajectory, and formulate it in a diagrammatic structure. We find that non-Markovianity renormalizes the probability of realizing a quantum trajectory, and that memory effects can be interpreted as a perturbation on top of the Markovian dynamics. We show that the diagrammatic structure is akin to that of a Dyson equation, and that the probability of the trajectories can be calculated analytically. We then apply our results to study the measurement-induced entanglement transition in random unitary circuits. We find that non-Markovianity does not significantly shift the transition, but stabilizes the volume law phase of the entanglement by shielding it from transient strong dissipation.

We consider a model of free fermions in a ladder geometry coupled to a nonuniform cavity mode via Peierls substitution. Since the cavity mode generates a magnetic field, no-go theorems on spontaneous photon condensation do not apply, and we indeed observe a phase transition to a photon condensed phase characterized by finite circulating currents, alternatively referred to as the equilibrium superradiant phase. We consider both square and triangular ladder geometries, and characterize the transition by studying the energy structure of the system, light-matter entanglement, the properties of the photon mode, and chiral currents. The transition is of first order and corresponds to a sudden change in the fermionic band structure as well as the number of its Fermi points. Thanks to the quasi-one dimensional geometry we scrutinize the accuracy of (mean field) cavity-matter decoupling against large scale density-matrix renormalization group simulations. We find that light-matter entanglement is essential for capturing corrections to matter properties at finite sizes and for the description of the correct photon state. We investigate the possibility of a striped inhomoegenous phase occurring as an electronic system with an order parameter linearly coupled to the elastic degrees of freedom is tuned through the electronic phase transition. We find that in finite systems where boundary conditions create an eleastic incompatibility, a stripe pattern may emerge in the vicinity of the electronic transition. Stripes are stabilized when the gained elastic energy overcomes the typical electronic and domain wall energy costs. In thin film geometries, the stripes are found to extend across the entire depth of the system. We also study the behavior of the phase fraction across the spinodal region of a first order phase transition. The orientation of stripes and the possibility of more complicated patterns is also discussed.

We consider a model of a light-matter system, in which a system of fermions (or bosons) is coupled to a photonic mode that drives a phase transitions in the matter degrees of freedom. Starting from a simplified analytical model, we show that the entanglement between light and matter vanishes at small and large coupling strength, and shows a peak in the proximity of the transition. We perform numerical simulations for a specific model (relevant to both solid state and cold atom platforms), and show that the entanglement displays critical behavior at the transition, and features maximum susceptibility, as demonstrated by a maximal entanglement capacity. Remarkably, light-matter entanglement provides direct access to critical exponents, suggesting a novel approach to measure universal properties without direct matter probes., Comment: 10 pages; 7 figures

Quantum systems evolving unitarily and subject to quantum measurements exhibit various types of non-equilibrium phase transitions, arising from the competition between unitary evolution and measurements. Dissipative phase transitions in steady states of time-independent Liouvillians and measurement induced phase transitions at the level of quantum trajectories are two primary examples of such transitions. Investigating a many-body spin system subject to periodic resetting measurements, we argue that many-body dissipative Floquet dynamics provides a natural framework to analyze both types of transitions. We show that a dissipative phase transition between a ferromagnetic ordered phase and a paramagnetic disordered phase emerges for long-range systems as a function of measurement probabilities. A measurement induced transition of the entanglement entropy between volume law scaling and sub-volume law scaling is also present, and is distinct from the ordering transition. The two phases correspond to an error-correcting and a quantum-Zeno regimes, respectively. The ferromagnetic phase is lost for short range interactions, while the volume law phase of the entanglement is enhanced. An analysis of multifractal properties of wave function in Hilbert space provides a common perspective on both types of transitions in the system. Current-driven insulator-metal transitions are in many cases driven by Joule heating proportional to the square of the applied current. Recent nano-imaging experiments in Ca$_2$RuO$_4$ reveal a metal-insulator phase boundary that depends on the direction of an applied current, suggesting an important non-heating effect. Motivated by these results, we study the effects of an electric current in a system containing interfaces between metallic and insulating phases. Derivation of a heat balance equation from general macroscopic Onsager transport theory, reveals a heating term proportional to the product of the current across the interface and the discontinuity in the Seebeck coefficient, so that heat can either be generated or removed at an interface, depending on the direction of the current relative to the change in material properties. For parameters appropriate to Ca$_2$RuO$_4$, this heating can be comparable to or larger than Joule heating. A simplified model of the relevant experimental geometry is shown to provide results consistent with the experiments. We show that in a model of a metal photoexcited by a transient pump pulse resonant with a phonon mode the absolute dc conductivity may become negative, depending on the interplay between the electronic structure, the phonon frequency and the pump intensity. The analysis includes the effects of inelastic scattering and thermal relaxation. Results for the time evolution of the negative conductivity state are presented; the associated non-equilibrium physics may persist for long times after the pulse. Our findings provide a theoretical justification for previously proposed phenomenology and indicate new routes to the generation and exploration of intrinsically non-equilibrium states., Comment: 5 pages, 3 figure. We present a theoretical investigation of the voltage-driven metal insulator transition based on solving coupled Boltzmann and Hartree-Fock equations to determine the insulating gap and the electron distribution in a model system -- a one dimensional charge density wave. Electric fields that are parametrically small relative to energy gaps can shift the electron distribution away from the momentum-space region where interband relaxation is efficient, leading to a highly non-equilibrium quasiparticle distribution even in the absence of Zener tunneling. The gap equation is found to have regions of multistability; a non-equilibrium analog of the free energy is constructed and used to determine which phase is preferred., Comment: 8 pages, 5 figures

Recent experiments on K$_3$C$_{60}$ and layered copper-oxide materials have reported substantial changes in the optical response following application of an intense THz pulse. These data have been interpreted as the stimulation of a transient superconducting state even at temperatures well above the equilibrium transition temperature. We propose an alternative phenomenology based on the assumption that the pulse creates a non-superconducting, though non-equilibrium situation in which the linear response conductivity is negative. The negative conductivity implies that the spatially uniform pre-pulse state is unstable and evolves to a new state with a spontaneous electric polarization. This state exhibits coupled oscillations of entropy and electric charge whose coupling to incident probe radiation modifies the reflectivity, leading to an apparently superconducting-like response that resembles the data. Dependencies of the reflectivity on polarization and angle of incidence of the probe are predicted and other experimental consequences are discussed., Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures

Cloud detection is the first step of any complex satellite-based cloud retrieval. No instrument detects all clouds, and analyses that use a given satellite climatology can only discuss a specific subset of clouds. We attempt to clarify which subsets of clouds are detected in a robust way by passive sensors, and which require active sensors. To do so, we identify where retrievals of Cloud Amounts (CAs), based on numerous sensors and algorithms, differ the most. We investigate large uncertainties, and confront retrievals from the CALIOP lidar, which detects semitransparent clouds and directly measures their vertical distribution, whatever the surface below. We document the cloud vertical distribution, opacity and seasonal variability where CAs from passive sensors disagree most. CALIOP CAs are larger than the passive average by +0.05 (AM) and +0.07 (PM). Over land, the +0.1 average difference rises to +0.2 over the African desert, Antarctica and Greenland, where large passive disagreements are traced to unfavorable surface conditions. Over oceans, CALIOP retrievals are closer to the average of passive retrievals except over the ITCZ (+0.1). Passive CAs disagree more in tropical areas associated with large-scale subsidence, where CALIOP observes a specific multi-layer cloud population: optically thin, high-level clouds and opaque (z>7km), shallow boundary layer clouds (z<2km). We evaluate the CA and cloud vertical distribution from 8 General Circulation Models where passive retrievals disagree and CALIOP provides new information. We find that modeled clouds are not more realistic where cloud detections from passive observations have long been robust, than where active sensors provide more reliable information.

We study the electronic thermal drag in two different Coulomb-coupled systems, the first one composed of two Coulomb blockaded metallic islands and the second one consisting of two parallel quantum wires. The two conductors of each system are electrically isolated and placed in the two circuits (the drive and the drag) of a four-electrode setup. The systems are biased, either by a temperature $\Delta T$ or a voltage $V$ difference, on the drive circuit, while no biases are present on the drag circuit. In the case of a pair of metallic islands we use a master equation approach to determine the general properties of the dragged heat current $I^{\rm (h)}_{\rm drag}$, accounting also for co-tunneling contributions and the presence of large biases. Analytic results are obtained in the sequential tunneling regime for small biases, finding, in particular, that $I^{\rm (h)}_{\rm drag}$ is quadratic in $\Delta T$ or $V$ and non-monotonous as a function of the inter-island coupling. Finally, by replacing one of the electrodes in the drag circuit with a superconductor, we find that heat can be extracted from the other normal electrode. In the case of the two interacting quantum wires, using the Luttinger liquid theory and the bosonization technique, we derive an analytic expression for the thermal trans-resistivity $\rho^{\rm (h)}_{12}$, in the weak-coupling limit and at low temperatures. $\rho^{\rm (h)}_{12}$ turns out to be proportional to the electric trans-resistivity $\rho^{\rm (c)}_{12}$, in such a way that their ratio (a kind of Wiedemann-Franz law) is proportional to $T^3$. We find that the thermal trans-resistivity is proportional to $T$ for low temperatures and decreases like $1/T$ for intermediate temperatures or like $1/T^3$ for high temperatures. We complete our analyses by performing numerical simulations that confirm the above results and allow to access the strong coupling regime., Comment: 21 pages, 17 figures
