Abstract

Beam management is an important technique to improve signal strength and reduce interference in wireless communication systems. Recently, there has been increasing interest in using diverse sensing modalities for beam management. However, it remains a big challenge to process multi-modal data efficiently and extract useful information. On the other hand, the recently emerging multi-modal transformer (MMT) is a promising technique that can process multi-modal data by capturing long-range dependencies. While MMT is highly effective in handling multi-modal data and providing robust beam management, integrating reinforcement learning (RL) further enhances their adaptability in dynamic environments. In this work, we propose a two-step beam management method by combining MMT with RL for dynamic beam index prediction. In the first step, we divide available beam indices into several groups and leverage MMT to process diverse data modalities to predict the optimal beam group. In the second step, we employ RL for fast beam decision-making within each group, which in return maximizes throughput. Our proposed framework is tested on a 6G dataset. 2. Novel Gradient Sparsification Algorithm via Bayesian Inference

Abstract

Error accumulation is an essential component of the Top-$k$ sparsification method in distributed gradient descent. It implicitly scales the learning rate and prevents the slow-down of lateral movement, but it can also deteriorate convergence. This paper proposes a novel sparsification algorithm called regularized Top-$k$ (RegTop-$k$) that controls the learning rate scaling of error accumulation. The algorithm is developed by looking at the gradient sparsification as an inference problem and determining a Bayesian optimal sparsification mask via maximum-a-posteriori estimation. It utilizes past aggregated gradients to evaluate posterior statistics, based on which it prioritizes the local gradient entries. Numerical experiments with ResNet-18 on CIFAR-10 show that at $0.1\%$ sparsification, RegTop-$k$ achieves about $8\%$ higher accuracy than standard Top-$k$., Comment: To appear in Proc. 3. Uplink Over-the-Air Aggregation for Multi-Model Wireless Federated Learning

Abstract

We propose an uplink over-the-air aggregation (OAA) method for wireless federated learning (FL) that simultaneously trains multiple models. To maximize the multi-model training convergence rate, we derive an upper bound on the optimality gap of the global model update, and then, formulate an uplink joint transmit-receive beamforming optimization problem to minimize this upper bound. We solve this problem using the block coordinate descent approach, which admits low-complexity closed-form updates. Simulation results show that our proposed multi-model FL with fast OAA substantially outperforms sequentially training multiple models under the conventional single-model approach., Comment: 5 pages, 5 figures. 4. Generative AI-in-the-loop: Integrating LLMs and GPTs into the Next Generation Networks

Abstract

In recent years, machine learning (ML) techniques have created numerous opportunities for intelligent mobile networks and have accelerated the automation of network operations. However, complex network tasks may involve variables and considerations even beyond the capacity of traditional ML algorithms. On the other hand, large language models (LLMs) have recently emerged, demonstrating near-human-level performance in cognitive tasks across various fields. However, they remain prone to hallucinations and often lack common sense in basic tasks. Therefore, they are regarded as assistive tools for humans. In this work, we propose the concept of "generative AI-in-the-loop" and utilize the semantic understanding, context awareness, and reasoning abilities of LLMs to assist humans in handling complex or unforeseen situations in mobile communication networks. We believe that combining LLMs and ML models allows both to leverage their respective capabilities and achieve better results than either model alone. To support this idea, we begin by analyzing the capabilities of LLMs and compare them with traditional ML algorithms. We then explore potential LLM-based applications in line with the requirements of next-generation networks. We further examine the integration of ML and LLMs, discussing how they can be used together in mobile networks. Unlike existing studies, our research emphasizes the fusion of LLMs with traditional ML-driven next-generation networks and serves as a comprehensive refinement of existing surveys. Finally, we provide a case study to enhance ML-based network intrusion detection with synthesized data generated by LLMs. Our case study further demonstrates the advantages of our proposed idea.

Abstract

Integrated sensing and communications is a key enabler for the 6G wireless communication systems. The multiple sensing modalities will allow the base station to have a more accurate representation of the environment, leading to context-aware communications. Some widely equipped sensors such as cameras and RADAR sensors can provide some environmental perceptions. However, they are not enough to generate precise environmental representations, especially in adverse weather conditions. On the other hand, the LiDAR sensors provide more accurate representations, however, their widespread adoption is hindered by their high cost. This paper proposes a novel approach to enhance the wireless communication systems by synthesizing LiDAR point clouds from images and RADAR data. Specifically, it uses a multimodal transformer architecture and pre-trained encoding models to enable an accurate LiDAR generation. The proposed framework is evaluated on the DeepSense 6G dataset, which is a real-world dataset curated for context-aware wireless applications. Our results demonstrate the efficacy of the proposed approach in accurately generating LiDAR point clouds. We achieve a modified mean squared error of 10.3931. Visual examination of the images indicates that our model can successfully capture the majority of structures present in the LiDAR point cloud for diverse environments. This will enable the base stations to achieve more precise environmental sensing. 6. Large Language Models in Wireless Application Design: In-Context Learning-enhanced Automatic Network Intrusion Detection

Abstract

Large language models (LLMs), especially generative pre-trained transformers (GPTs), have recently demonstrated outstanding ability in information comprehension and problem-solving. This has motivated many studies in applying LLMs to wireless communication networks. In this paper, we propose a pre-trained LLM-empowered framework to perform fully automatic network intrusion detection. Three in-context learning methods are designed and compared to enhance the performance of LLMs. With experiments on a real network intrusion detection dataset, in-context learning proves to be highly beneficial in improving the task processing performance in a way that no further training or fine-tuning of LLMs is required. We show that for GPT-4, testing accuracy and F1-Score can be improved by 90%. Moreover, pre-trained LLMs demonstrate big potential in performing wireless communication-related tasks. Specifically, the proposed framework can reach an accuracy and F1-Score of over 95% on different types of attacks with GPT-4 using only 10 in-context learning examples.

7. Fast Group Scheduling for Downlink Large-Scale Multi-Group Multicast Beamforming

Abstract

Next-generation wireless networks need to handle massive user access effectively. This paper addresses the problem of joint group scheduling and multicast beamforming for downlink transmission with many active user groups. Aiming to maximize the minimum user throughput, we propose a three-phase approach to tackle this difficult joint optimization problem efficiently. In Phase 1, we utilize the optimal multicast beamforming structure obtained recently to find the group-channel directions for all groups. We propose two low-complexity group scheduling algorithms in Phase 2, which determine the subset of groups in each time slot sequentially and the total number of time slots required for all groups. The first algorithm measures the level of spatial separation among groups and selects the dissimilar groups that maximize the minimum user rate into the same time slot. In contrast, the second algorithm first identifies the spatially correlated groups via a learning-based clustering method based on the group-channel directions, and then separates spatially similar groups into different time slots. Finally, the multicast beamformers for the scheduled groups are obtained in each time slot by a computationally efficient method. Simulation results show that our proposed scheduling methods can effectively capture the level of spatial separation among groups to improve the minimum user throughput over the conventional approach that serves all groups in a single time slot or one group per time slot, and can be executed with low computational complexity., Comment: 13 pages, 8 figures

8. Multi-Model Wireless Federated Learning with Downlink Beamforming

Abstract

This paper studies the design of wireless federated learning (FL) for simultaneously training multiple machine learning models. We consider round robin device-model assignment and downlink beamforming for concurrent multiple model updates. After formulating the joint downlink-uplink transmission process, we derive the per-model global update expression over communication rounds, capturing the effect of beamforming and noisy reception. To maximize the multi-model training convergence rate, we derive an upper bound on the optimality gap of the global model update and use it to formulate a multi-group multicast beamforming problem. We show that this problem can be converted to minimizing the sum of inverse received signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratios, which can be solved efficiently by projected gradient descent. Simulation shows that our proposed multi-model FL solution outperforms other alternatives, including conventional single-model sequential training and multi-model zero-forcing beamforming., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures. Abstract

We study joint downlink-uplink beamforming design for wireless federated learning (FL) with a multi-antenna base station. Considering analog transmission over noisy channels and uplink over-the-air aggregation, we derive the global model update expression over communication rounds. We then obtain an upper bound on the expected global loss function, capturing the downlink and uplink beamforming and receiver noise effect. We propose a low-complexity joint beamforming algorithm to minimize this upper bound, which employs alternating optimization to breakdown the problem into three subproblems, each solved via closed-form gradient updates. Simulation under practical wireless system setup shows that our proposed joint beamforming design solution substantially outperforms the conventional separate-link design approach and nearly attains the performance of ideal FL with error-free communication links., Comment: 8 pages, 3 figures. Abstract

Las costras físicas (CFS) y biológicas (CBS) del suelo ocupan una gran extensión en zonas áridas y semiáridas de todo el mundo. En estos medios, el encostramiento del suelo tiene una gran influencia sobre los procesos hidrológicos y erosivos. Los objetivos que se persiguen en este trabajo son: analizar las características de las costras que influyen en la infiltración y en la erosión e identificar cuáles de estas características tiene una mayor influencia sobre estos procesos. En dos áreas semiáridas representativas en la provincia de Almería se identificaron los principales tipos de costras físicas y biológicas. Para cada tipo de costra, se analizaron las características físicas y químicas de la propia costra y del material subyacente, así como su rugosidad, hidrofobia, resistencia a la penetración y cobertura de diferentes comunidades de organismos. Para analizar la influencia de las costras sobre la infiltración y la erosión, se llevaron a cabo simulaciones de lluvia en parcelas con la costra intacta y para examinar los efectos de las características del material subyacente a la costra, los experimentos de simulación de lluvia se realizaron tras retirar la costra. La respuesta hidrológica de las áreas encostradas estudiadas se ve afectada no solo por las características de la costra, sino también por las características del suelo sobre el que se desarrollan estas costras y especialmente por la pendiente que aparece como una variable altamente predictiva para la infiltración y la erosión. Entre las características del material subyacente, resalta la influencia de la textura, el contenido en carbono orgánico y la conductividad eléctrica, y entre las características de la costra, la cobertura y rugosidad son las variables más predictivas que explican las diferencias en las tasas de infiltración y erosión entre ambos sitios.

Abstract

Introduction: Polycythemia vera (PV) is one of the myeloproliferative neoplasms (MPN) diagnosed by World Health Organization (WHO) criteria 2016, which requires the presence of 3 major criteria: high hemoglobin/hematocrit, bone marrow findings, and Janus Kinase 2 (JAK2) mutation or two major and one minor criteria, including erythropoietin (EPO) level. However, in clinical practice, difficulties in diagnosis can arise as it may be masked by secondary causes for erythrocytosis such as smoking or obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). Case Presentation: Here, we report a 55-year-old gentleman, morbidly obese with OSA on home continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) machine, who was incidentally found to have polycythemia. Further evaluation confirmed the diagnosis of PV. Conclusion: PV can be masked by the assumption of secondary polycythemia based on history. This underscores the importance of screening such cohort through JAK2 and EPO testing to avoid missing PV.

Abstract

Key Clinical Message This report documents the treatment of a 41‐year‐old male with sickle cell disease (SCD) and repeated stuttering priapism using crizanlizumab, which alleviated the priapism but induced a significant vaso‐occlusive crisis during the second infusion. Encouragingly, no subsequent vaso‐occlusive crises occurred. However, the potential for infusion‐related adverse events warrants close supervision. Further research is necessary to explore its full benefits on priapism management.

This study focuses on the influence of learning approaches on students' critical thinking skills, the lack of teacher diversity in teaching, and the utilization of learning media sources. After applying the environmental approach, the purpose was to determine the effect of critical thinking skills and minimum completeness criteria (KKM). The research design is Quasi-Experimental Design (Time Series Design). The research sample was 20 fifth-grade students at SDN Gondo 01. The pretest and posttest normality tests were normally distributed. Output SPSS pretest column sig. has a value of 0.200 > (0.05) means that the data is normally distributed. The posttest results of the SPSS output are in the sig column. The value 0.155 > (0.05) means the data is normally distributed. The paired sample t-test hypothesis test obtained sig. (2-heads) 0.000. If sig. (2-tailed) 0.000 < (0.05), then Ha is accepted, meaning that there is an influence of the environmental approach on students' critical thinking skills. The results of hypothesis testing two t-tests for one Sample obtained the results of Tcount (0.20) and Ttable (2.09). If Tcount > - Ttable, then Ho is accepted, which means that the student has fulfilled the KKM, which is 70. Key words: Environmental Approach, Critical Thinking, Science Learning.

Abstract

This study endeavours to make a new contribution to knowledge in the field of mathematical learning in schools in challenging circumstances. By combining quantitative advanced secondary data analysis of International Large-Scale Assessment (ILSA) and a qualitative case study for investigating teaching and learning practices, the study aims to establish a methodological framework and a research design that help to harness TIMSS outcomes for school improvement. Availing of TIMSS (2011) data and applying a mixed-methods research design, the research aimed to find out what value-added Palestinian schools provide in teaching mathematics to their students. Furthermore, and moving beyond TIMSS, the research investigated in-depth the teaching-learning practices to improve mathematics education. The secondary data analysis of TIMSS, by applying the multilevel modelling (MLM) methods, formed the first phase of the study and informed the design of the second phase. School practices and characteristics were compared between schools in Palestine on the basis of association to students' performance in mathematics. The first phase findings revealed a weak relationship between students' mathematics performance and school level context, resources, and practices. Nevertheless, students' background, socioeconomic status (SES), self-concept and attitudes evidenced significantly stronger effects. In the light of the first phase study findings, a second phase was conducted. The second phase involved a qualitative case study of one of the schools that had mitigated for background effects and had students with high performance in mathematics. The case study focused on how the staff articulate the processes and practices that have facilitated the high value-added scores in the TIMSS data. The qualitative phase of the study emphasised and explained how efficient and competent staff at school overcame the challenging circumstances and improved learning. In addition to the important key findings from the two research phases, the current study ultimately suggests future theoretical and methodological frameworks that can be used in research at a national level in Palestine or any education system with similar circumstances.

Abstract

ABSTRACTSickle cell disease (SCD) is one of the most common hematological diseases, which results in variable complications. The treatment of SCD is evolving but limited options are available for now. Acute chest syndrome (ACS) is one of the serious complications observed in SCD and a challenging one in prevention. Crizanlizumab is a monoclonal antibody that binds to P-selectin and improves blood flow by preventing sickle cell adhesion to endothelium, resulting in improvement of vaso-oclusive crises (VOC). It is not well evaluated in terms of ACS prevention. Here we report a 23-year-old patient with SCD and recurrent ACS; she was started on Crizanlizumab and she had no more ACS, but once she was off Crizanlizumab she developed ACS again, later Crizanlizumab was re-started, and the patient has improved significantly.

Abstract

In this work, a new transmission scheme, signal space cognitive cooperation, is introduced by applying the idea of signal space diversity in an underlay spectrum sharing decode-and-forward multi-relay cooperative network. In the proposed structure, the secondary source signal is rotated by a certain angle and then the source and the secondary best relay transmit the in-phase and the quadrature components of the rotated signal. As a consequence, two source signals, rather than one, are transmitted in two-time slots which improves data rates considerably, compared to the conventional cognitive cooperative schemes. In this work, proactive relaying mode is used in which the best relay is selected based on the max-min selection criterion before executing the transmission. Considering both statistical and the instantaneous channel state information of the feedback channel between the primary receiver and the secondary network, two power allocation methods are adopted at the source. For both methods, closed-form expressions of error probability are derived. Moreover, asymptotic analysis is performed and diversity gain is obtained to provide further insights about the system performance. Finally, analytical expressions are verified by Monte-Carlo simulations.

Abstract

Background: This study assessed the potential cost-effectiveness of high (80–100%) vs low (21–35%) fraction of inspired oxygen (FiO2) at preventing surgical site infections (SSIs) after abdominal surgery in Nigeria, India, and South Africa. Methods: Decision-analytic models were constructed using best available evidence sourced from unbundled data of an ongoing pilot trial assessing the effectiveness of high FiO2, published literature, and a cost survey in Nigeria, India, and South Africa. Effectiveness was measured as percentage of SSIs at 30 days after surgery, a healthcare perspective was adopted, and costs were reported in US dollars ($). Results: High FiO2 may be cost-effective (cheaper and effective). In Nigeria, the average cost for high FiO2 was $216 compared with $222 for low FiO2 leading to a −$6 (95% confidence interval [CI]: −$13 to −$1) difference in costs. In India, the average cost for high FiO2 was $184 compared with $195 for low FiO2 leading to a −$11 (95% CI: −$15 to −$6) difference in costs. In South Africa, the average cost for high FiO2 was $1164 compared with $1257 for low FiO2 leading to a −$93 (95% CI: −$132 to −$65) difference in costs. The high FiO2 arm had few SSIs, 7.33% compared with 8.38% for low FiO2, leading to a −1.05 (95% CI: −1.14 to −0.90) percentage point reduction in SSIs. Conclusion: High FiO2 could be cost-effective at preventing SSIs in the three countries but further data from large clinical trials are required to confirm this.

Abstract

Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) is a heterogeneous genetic disorder, most often caused by sarcomeric gene mutations, with a small proportion due to variants in non-sarcomeric loci. Phospholamban (PLN) is a phosphoprotein associated with the cardiac sarcoplasmic reticulum, a major determinant of cardiac contractility and relaxation. We conducted a retrospective study to determine the prevalence, phenotypical spectrum and clinical course of patients carrying the PLN p.Leu39* variant. A cohort including 11 PLN patients was identified among all patients with HCM (9/189, 4.8%) and DCM (2/62, 3.2%) who underwent genetic testing from two tertiary centers and five more were detected through cascade screening. Complete phenotyping was performed. PLN p.Leu39* variant-driven cardiomyopathy presented mostly as hypertrophic, with frequent progression to end-stage dilated HCM. We proceeded to compare these results to a similar analysis of a control cohort consisting of age-matched individuals that inherited pathogenic or likely pathogenic variants in common sarcomeric genes (MYBPC3/MYH7). Overall, the clinical characteristics and examination findings of patients carrying PLN p.Leu39* were not different from patients with cardiomyopathy related to sarcomeric mutations except for the presence of pathological Q waves and the incidence of non-sustained ventricular arrhythmias, which were higher in PLN patients than in those with MYBPC3/MYH7-related diseases.

Abstract

As this research is being concluded in September 2017, four milestones in the subjugation of Palestinians are commemorated: 2017 marks one century since the Balfour Declaration, seven decades since the Partition Plan, five decades since the Six Day War, and one decade since the siege on Gaza. The colonization, occupation, and besiegement of Palestinians deepen with impunity, while diplomacy and significant portions of academia and civil society continue to feed an illusory recipe for peace. It was to me a timely endeavour to demystify the abstraction of peace by foregrounding the intersection between justice and reconciliation. I position the justice-reconciliation nexus as the core marker of transitional justice and of conflict transformation in Palestine/Israel, indicative of the repair needed to transcend the impasse. Though justice and reconciliation emerge in the literature as mostly post-settlement concerns and are normatively assumed as synergistic, I evidence both justice and reconciliation are prominent pre-settlement in my site of focus and they exhibit significant incongruences. This exploratory investigation seeks to map the multifaceted, nonlinear meanings surrounding justice and reconciliation presently. To capture this spectrum of idea(l)s and actions, three areas are examined around the justice-reconciliation nexus: its conceptualization, its contextualization, and its operationalization. Conceptualization-wise, I demonstrate the justice-reconciliation nexus is bound to the magnitude of structural violence in Israel/Palestine, one transitional justice has limited capacity to engage. Contextualization-wise, I situate this nexus within a settler colonial structure and track the continuities between this foundational crime and its additional layers of harm: ethnic cleansing, the military occupation, apartheid, protracted non-resolution, third party interventionism, and a culture of pervasive moral apathy. Operationalization-wise, I position civil society as an epistemic community engaged in transitional/transformative efforts amid a non-transitional site. Mapping activism around the justice-reconciliation nexus, I document one stream fixated on justice, working on the citizen vs. state, vertical axis, and another one advancing reconciliation along the people-to-people, horizontal axis. This concept-contextpraxis continuum surfaces the fractures between justice and reconciliation, offering a telescopic view of the difficulty to bridge transitional justice theory to settler colonial studies.

Abstract

Abstract A 48‐year‐old male diagnosed with acute promyelocytic leukemia (APL) started on all‐trans‐retinoic acid and arsenic trioxide, developed typical symptoms of differentiation syndrome, and improved dramatically on steroids. Hence, any APL patient started on chemotherapy, needs to be monitored closely for developing differentiation syndrome and to start steroid upon suspicion.

50. A double-edged sword: the role of pornography in learning about BDSM.

Abstract

Increasing depictions of kink in mainstream society are leading to a rise in people seeking to learn about and participate in bondage/discipline, domination/submission, and sadism/masochism (BDSM). For many, this initial education process is likely to focus on the Internet and pornography specifically. Existing research into the impact of pornography on sex education has been mixed, though predominantly negative. However, pornography's role in BDSM education has yet to be explored. To address this gap, 18 semi-structured interviews were conducted with BDSM community leaders in Canada and the USA to examine from where and what practitioners learn about BDSM. Participants drew upon their personal experiences and those they interacted with in their capacity as a community leader. Interviewees identified the benefits and risks associated with using pornography as a learning tool for BDSM participation. They stressed how pornography's value as a learning tool has evolved over time, how it can normalise BDSM and increase self-acceptance, teach skills, and reinforce negotiation and consent practices. However, if consumers cannot separate fantasy from reality, pornography can have negative effects. The impact of BDSM-themed pornography for education, especially in adolescents and young people, is discussed, as are directions for more in-depth investigations of this topic.
