The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of resveratrol against fumonisin B1 (FB1)-induced liver toxicity, as, to the best of our knowledge, these effects have not been investigated yet, even though the toxic effects and mechanisms of FB1 and the antioxidative effects of resveratrol are well known. 40 BALB/c mice were divided into control, FB1, resveratrol, and FB1+resveratrol groups. Control received saline for 14 days. The FB1 group received 2.25 mg/kg FB1 every other day for 14 days. The resveratrol group received 10 mg/kg resveratrol for 14 days. The FB1+resveratrol group received 2.25 mg/kg FB1 every other day and 10 mg/kg resveratrol every day for 14 days. All administrations were peritoneal. Alanine aminotransferase (ALT), aspartate aminotransferase (AST), total sialic acid (TSA) levels were analysed in serum samples, while total antioxidant status (TAS) and total oxidant status (TOS) were measured in the liver. Additionally, the liver tissue was examined for histopathological changes. AST, ALT, and TSA were significantly higher in the FB1 group than control. Resveratrol countered FB1 effects for all parameters, including TOS and TAS. Liver histology showed FB1-induced hyperaemia, infiltrations, and megalokaryosis in some hepatocytes. No pathological findings were detected in the control, resveratrol, or FB1+resveratrol group. Our findings confirm resveratrol’s protective effect against liver damage and oxidative stress caused by FB1. In addition, they suggest that increased serum TSA levels can be used as a biomarker of FB1-induced hepatotoxicity.

Objectives: The purpose of this study was to investigate whether 18F-fluorodeoxyglucose (18F-FDG) positron emission tomography/computed tomography (PET/CT) parameters have a role in differentiating invasive mucinous lung adenocarcinoma (IMA) from lepidic predominant lung adenocarcinoma (LPA). Additionally, we compared the 18F-FDG-PET/CT features between survivors and non-survivors. Methods: Tumors were divided into 2 groups according to CT appearance: Group 1: nodular-type tumor; group 2: mass- or pneumonic-type tumor. Unilateral and bilateral multifocal diseases were detected. Clinicopathological characteristics and PET/CT findings were compared between IMAs and LPAs, as well as between survivors and non-survivors. Results: We included 43 patients with IMA and 14 with LPA. Tumor size (p=0.003), incidence of mass/pneumonic type (p=0.011), and bilateral lung involvement (p=0.049) were higher in IMAs than in LPAs. IMAs had more advanced T, M, and Tumor, Node, and Metastasis stages than in LPAs (p=0.048, p=0.049, and p=0.022, respectively). There was no statistically significant difference in maximum standardized uptake value (SUVmax) between the IMA and LPA (p=0.078). The SUV was significantly lower in the nodular group than in the mass/pneumonic-type group (p=0.0001). A total of 11 patients died, of whom SUVmax values were significantly higher in these patients (p=0.031). Male gender (p=0.0001), rate of stage III-IV (p=0.0001), T3-T4 (p=0.021), M1 stages (p=0.0001), multifocality (p=0.0001), and bilateral lung involvement (p=0.0001) were higher in non-survivor. Conclusions: Although CT images were useful for the differential diagnosis of LPAs and IMAs, SUVmax was not helpful for differentiation of these 2 groups. Objective Certain types of bacteria contain lipopolysaccharide (LPS), which can cause widespread inflammation in the body, including the pancreas. Fluvoxamine (FLV), a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) commonly prescribed for psychiatric disorders, has been shown to possess anti-inflammatory properties and may be beneficial in conditions involving tissue damage and inflammation. This study aims to evaluate the potential protective effects of FLV against experimentally induced pancreatic disease in rats using LPS. Material and Method In this experiment, a total of 32 Wistar albino male rats were randomly divided into four groups: control, LPS (5 mg/kg, intraperitoneally (i.p.)), LPS + FLV (50 mg/kg FLV, i.p.) and FLV. The rats were euthanatized 6 hours after the administration of LPS, and serum and pancreas tissue samples were collected during the necropsy for biochemical, histopathological, and immunohistochemical evaluations. Results According to the study findings, LPS lowered blood glucose levels. Histological examination showed that LPS caused edema, mild infiltration of inflammatory cells, increased vacuolization in the cells of the Langerhans islet, and severe hyperemia. Immunohistochemical investigations revealed a reduction in the expression of insulin and amylin. The biochemical, histopathological, and immunohistochemical outcomes were improved by FLV. Conclusion The results of this experimental rat model study indicated that LPS causes damage to the endocrine pancreas. However, FLV demonstrated significant ameliorative effects on the pancreas in rats with LPS- induced pancreatitis. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is a global health problem and it is stated that the use of resveratrol supplement contributes to the protection of kidney health. In this study, it was aimed to evaluate the effect of resveratrol supplementation on kidney function, inflammation and histopathological findings in rats with experimental adenine-induced kidney damage. Three different groups of 10 randomly selected rats were formed. The first group was the negative control group, the second group was the uremic control group (KDG), and the third group was the group in which uremia was created and resveratrol was applied (RG). Kidney damage was induced by administration of 200 mg/kg adenine. Resveratrol supplementation was administered at 20 mg/kg after kidney damage. Serum urea, creatinine, indoxyl sulfate (IS), p-cresol, glomerular filtration rate, C-reactive protein (CRP); interleukin (IL)-6 and tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α gene expression levels and histopathological findings were evaluated. It was determined that resveratrol supplement applied after the formation of connective tissue in renal failure didn't have an improvement effect on the urine amount, kidney function and inflammatory parameters and histopathological changes (p > 0.05). Just, the increase in the CRP value of KDG (p < 0.05) was not observed in RG. The findings suggest that resveratrol administered after kidney damage with adenine has no effect on kidney disease. Artemisinin, an antimalarial drug, has anticancer activity and possesses protective effects against several tissue injuries. The aim of the present study was to investigate the effects of artemisinin on doxorubicin-induced renal and testicular toxicity in rats. Doxorubicin was administered to rats at a single dose of 10 mg/kg body weight (b.w.) as a single intraperitoneal injection. Application of artemisinin was by using oral gavage feeding needle for 14 days at different specified doses (7 mg/kg and 35 mg/kg b.w.). At the end of the experiments, kidney and testis samples were collected and used for histopathological and immunohistochemical examinations. At histopathological examination, while hyperemia was the marked finding in kidney and testis of rats treated with doxorubicin only, no evidence of structural abnormalities showed in other groups. Immunohistochemical examination of the testes and kidneys demonstrated significantly increased expression of caspase-3, TNF-α, iNOS and NF-κB in rats treated with doxorubicin only. Artemisinin decreased the doxorubicin-induced overexpression of NF-κB, iNOS, TNFα and caspase-3 in these tissues of rats. Artemisinin can protect the kidney and testis against doxorubicin-induced nephrotoxicity and testotoxicity, probably through a decrease of caspase-3, TNF-α, iNOS and NF-κB expressions. It may be concluded that artemisinin has a potential for clinical use in the treatment of kidney and testis damage induced by doxorubicin. Further researches are required to determine the appropriate combination of artemisinin with doxorubicin.

We investigated the protective effects of pregabalin (PRG) on kidney and renal endothelial damage in sepsis induced by Lipopolysaccharide (LPS). Rats were randomly divided into three groups as control, LPS and LPS+PRG. Saline solution was administered 30 mg/kg orally and 5 mg/kg intraperitoneally (i.p.) to the control group. LPS was applied as 5 mg/kg, i.p. to the LPS group. In the LPS+PRG group, PRG at 30 mg/kg orally and one hour before LPS administration, one hour later 5 mg/kg i.p. LPS was applied. Rats were sacrificed 6 hours after LPS administration. White Blood Cell (WBC), granulocyte, Blood Urea Nitrogen (BUN), creatinine, uric asid, Total Oxidant Status (TOS) and Oxidative Stress Index (OSI) significantly increased (p<0.05); platelets (PLT), activated partial thromboplastin time (aPTT) and Total Antioxidant Status (TAS) significantly decreased in the LPS group compared to the control group (p<0.05). In the LPS+PRG group WBC, granulocyte, BUN, creatinine, uric asid, TOS and OSI significantly decreased (p<0.05); PLT, aPTT and TAS significantly increased compared to the LPS group(p<0.05). Histopathological examinations showed that kidney and renal endothelial damage in the LPS group decreased in the LPS+PRG group. Immunohistochemically IL1-β, IL-6, IL-10, TNF-α expressions in kidney tissue and Toll-Like Receptors-4 (TLR-4) and NF-κB expressions in the renal endothelial tissue significantly increased in the LPS group compared to the control group and significantly decreased in the LPS+PRG group compared to the LPS group (p<0.001). Sepsis causes kidney and renal endothelial damage and PRG reduces this damage. Therefore PRG can be used in prophylactic treatment in sepsis, supported by more studies. This experimental study aimed to evaluate the effects of injectable platelet-rich fibrin (i-PRF) on mucosal healing and the release of growth factors in rats. 40 rats were used; i-PRF was administered in the right buccal area while saline was injected in the left. Cytokeratin, FGF, PDGF, TGF, and VEGF expressions were determined with immunohistochemistry. Gene expressions of EGF, TGF-β, and VEGF were analysed. Epithelialization started on the 3rd day, and connective tissue maturation was more prominent in the i-PRF-applied group. Also, the releases of VEGF, EGF, TGF-β, PDGF, and FGF were higher in the i-PRF group during the 14 days. Gene expression analysis showed that changes in TGF-β at 14 days after i-PRF injection and VEGF after 21 days were statistically significant. The results of this study suggested that autologous i-PRF application enhanced the healing of oral mucosal wounds by increasing the release of growth factors for 21 days. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Despite having a low fatality rate in monkeys, monkeypox remains an important disease because of its zoonotic potential. The aim of this study is to describe the clinical, pathological, ultrastructural and virological findings of the first monkeypox case diagnosed in a baby monkey in Türkiye with unknown transmission. A monkeypox infection was detected in a 1-month-old, female, baby monkey born in Antalya Zoo and died with skin lesions. It was reported that the baby's mother did not care for and caregivers took care of the cub, and skin lesions on the hands of the caregivers and responsible veterinarian were reported. Necropsy, histopathology, electron microscopy and chorioallantoic membrane (CAM) test were performed. Typical cutaneous and pulmonary poxvirus finding in a baby monkey was described in this case. CAM results firstly reported in a monkeypox case. Because of the zoonotic potential of illness, monkey colonies, particularly in zoos, must be controlled with vigilance.
