The article discusses the role of two United Nations Tribunals, the International Criminal Tribunals for the Former Yugoslavia (ICTY) and for Rwanda (ICTR), in promoting respect for fair trial rights. The tribunals are both cognizant of the fair trial rights provisions of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights of December 16, 1966 (ICCPR). They also guarantee compliance with international human rights standards and assist in the setting of international due process standards via their interpretations of the ICCPR.
