A biography of Christian Herfarth, a German surgeon is presented. He was born on August 11, 1933, in Breslau, now Wroclaw, Poland. He and his family moved to Germany due to World War II, and then the creation of a communist regime drove them to East Germany. He attended several medical schools and obtained his medical doctorate with summa cum laude in 1957. He started his career as surgeon at the Institute of Pathology of the Heidelberg Medical School with liver transplantation as his major.
