This report on research examines how artists united through social justice are working to raise awareness of the current conflict in the Western Sahara, through participation in the International Encounters of Art and Human Rights in Western Sahara (ARTifariti). I address the history and current situation in the area, as it is experienced by the Sahrawi people. With the intention of exploring the events of the Encounters, four art projects will be discussed in which artists have worked with geopolitically significant materials: the remnants of war, sand, clay, oil paint, diesel barrels, clothing, old shoes and the body itself, using disciplines such as painting, sculpture, installation and performance. This report concludes by reflecting on the outcomes of the Encounters, both on a local and a global scale, drawing attention to its main goal: opening the eyes of the world to the situation of the Sahrawi people.
