The article details the programs implemented in North Bend, Washington high schools to improve the academic performance of students. The schools adopted the privileged system, wherein students who are considered able to discipline themselves are given free rein with regards to their activities during study periods. A democratic method of classwork and assignment management is then implemented. The benefits of these programs are discussed by the author.
