The Smithsonian's National Zoo and Conservation Biology Institute in Washington, DC, will be receiving a pair of giant pandas from China by the end of the year. This comes after the National Zoo sent their previous pandas back to China when their hosting agreement expired. China is the only natural habitat for giant pandas, and there are fewer than 1,900 living in the wild. The pandas will be cared for and given opportunities to breed at the US zoos, with any cubs produced being sent back to China within four years. Other zoos in California are also set to receive giant pandas from China this year. The pandas coming to the National Zoo are a 2-year-old male named Bao Li and a 2-year-old female named Qing Bao. They will travel to the US with an animal care team on a flight known as the FedEx Panda Express and will initially live in a private area to adjust to their new environment.
