WIND speed ,NUCLEAR power plants ,METEOROLOGICAL stations ,AIRPORT terminals ,WATER management - Abstract
The paper deals with the wind speed of strong and extreme wind events in Poland and their descriptions of their effects. Two recent estimation developed by the Institute of Meteorology and Water Management in Warsaw [4] and by Lorenc [3] are presented. Their strong and weak points are briefly described. The 37 annual maximum gusts of wind speeds measured at all meteorological stations between 1971 and 2007 are analysed with extremal probability paper. Based on the measured and estimated wind speeds (taken from existing literature), the authors suggest new estimations for strong and extreme wind that may occur in Poland. In the near future, Poland is going to construct some important structures, such as a central air terminal and some nuclear power plants, so knowledge about strong and extreme winds in our country is very important for engineers who will design these types of structures. In this case, the information given in Section 6 of the ISO 1382 standard for identifying hazards, estimating, evaluating, and treating risk may be applied. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: This report focuses on the treatment histories of 21 patients diagnosed with Dravet syndrome (DRVT) under the care of the Mother and Child Institute in Warsaw. This paper aims to present typical treatment schemes for patients with drug-resistant epilepsy, as well as to highlight the influence of genetic diagnosis on pharmacotherapeutic management and to present an economic analysis of hospitalization costs. This paper will also summarize the effectiveness of the latest drugs used in DRVT. Methods: Clinical data were collected retrospectively from available medical records. The effectiveness of anticonvulsant treatment was assessed based on epileptic seizure diaries and observations by caregivers and pediatric neurologists. Results: The study group (n = 21) consisted of patients aged 3–26 years. Orphan drugs dedicated to Dravet syndrome were introduced in all patients due to the genetic diagnosis, which significantly improved the patients' clinical conditions. The breakthrough drugs were stiripentol (in 16/21) and fenfluramine (in 3/21). Conclusions: In recent years, molecular genetics has rapidly developed in Poland, along with a steady increase in knowledge of Dravet syndrome among the medical profession. Early and precise diagnosis provides the opportunity to target treatment with drugs dedicated to Dravet syndrome with high efficacy. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Purpose: This paper attempts to reveal the potential differences between the portfolios of dividend-paying companies with growth or value potential and the same portfolios fortified with the financial instruments replicating precious metals or real estate price behavior in a turbulent global economy. Design/methodology/approach: The research objective of this paper is accomplished by means of a thorough literature analysis. Moreover, the authors employ comparative analysis methods to explore the features of stock portfolios held by dividend-paying companies with value or growth potential and portfolios of the companies that are fortified with financial instruments replicating the price behavior of precious metals or real estate and uncover the similarities and differences. Research of the characteristics of financial instrument portfolio variants and comparison between them is conducted by means of standard deviation of the rate of return, coefficient of variation, the Pearson correlation coefficient and the Spearman's rank correlation coefficient. It was also assessed whether the estimated correlation coefficients were statistically significant through the use of a non-parametric correlation coefficient significance test. Findings: The results of the empirical analyses conducted here reveal that the average annual return of portfolios held by dividend-paying companies with value and growth potential is lower than ETFs replicating precious metals. Furthermore, during the turbulent economy of 2020, the inclusion of precious metal assets boosted the rates of return of the Polish dividend-paying companies portfolios. Research limitations/implications: The research was carried out on a limited number of the analyzed companies. Therefore, it could be biased, due to the deterministic stock sampling method. Practical implications: Knowledge of the similarities and differences between dividend-paying companies with value or growth potential and the risk diversification of such companies9 stock portfolios by means of instruments replicating the price behavior of precious metals or real estate is of great importance to both the investors and investment funds' boards. Consequently, one can make better investment decisions. Social implications: Among the paper's social implications, the most important appears to be a possible change in the investors' attitude towards dividend-paying companies with value potential and financial instruments replicating the price behavior of precious metals or real estate. Ultimately, investors9 needs could be better addressed. Originality/value: What is new in the paper is the stock comparison of dividend-paying companies' with value and growth potential with precious metals and real estate-based instruments. The paper also attempts to compare efficiency of investing in the portfolio variants, capturing the effect of the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic, thereby filling our knowledge gap. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

It is frequently asserted that gastronomic services (or the hospitality sector) in Warsaw during the Occupation was, paradoxically, larger than before 1
st September 1939. The evidence for this assertion, by known and highly respected authors, is argued here to be internally inconsistent even though their conclusions are largely the same. This paper comes to contrary conclusions, namely, that the scale of gastronomic services was smaller than before the war, though it was still surprisingly large, given the terrible conditions existing in the city. (Obviously, in either case, the evidence one draws upon can often be circumstantial and partial). The research draws on an analysis of telephone directories published in Poland from 1930 to 1945, some of which, but not all, are some of the sources used by the authors. For more than a decade, the importance of urban social movements has been systematically increasing in the Polish public sphere. However, available theories of social movements cannot account for the variety of forms of urban mobilization or for the ideological differences between organizations. The aim of this paper is to demonstrate the relevance of Pierre Bourdieu's theory of social class for research on urban movements. Using the concepts of "capital" and "habitus," the paper explores the social vision and process of the emergence of two activist organizations in Warsaw, Poland. The study is based on qualitative research conducted from 2016 to 2019, which included an analysis of secondary resources and individual in-depth interviews with members from each organization. Bourdieu's theory of social class facilitates consideration of different aspects of the functioning of urban social movements, including the role of resources and competences, ideological divisions, and chances of success. The theory also provides an explanation for the importance of class within urban social movements. The article shows that, even though the demands of social movements appear to be values-led, in fact, they are based on the class interests of their members. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

As is widely acknowledged in film studies and beyond, Jewish entrepreneurs and artists contributed significantly to the rise of cinema in the US and many European countries. However, apart from some research in the American and British contexts, the extent to which Jewish cinemagoers attended screenings is largely unknown. To stimulate greater scholarly interest in this topic, this paper discusses the broad applicability of the Historic Jewish Press digital collection, which contains newspapers printed in 16 different languages, reflecting the range of languages used by Jewish communities worldwide. Using the example of the search for Jewish patrons of the Palace Cinema in 1920s Warsaw, the paper shows how digital research can be used to extract information about marginalised Jewish audiences. Finally, it demonstrates how these sources can be used for new investigations and research perspectives. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Reducing the phenomenon of food waste and effective management of already wasted food in the form of post-consumer waste, included in the source-separated organic fraction of municipal solid waste (SS-OFMSW) from households and catering facilities, are some of the key challenges of the circular economy (CE), in particular in highly urbanized areas. The basis for the effective use of this waste is the knowledge of its physical and chemical properties. The main objective of the paper is to identify the key technological and organizational parameters for selective collection determining the characteristics of the SS-OFMSW and, consequently, the optimal path for its management. This paper presents the results of qualitative research of SS-OFMSW generated in the capital of Poland—Warsaw—coming from three sources: multi- and single-family housing and catering facilities. The collection efficiency of this waste was determined in the form of quality in container rate (QCR = 92–97%) and variability in terms of impurities and admixtures present in it (CV = 56–87%). High variability indicates that the system of selective waste collection in Warsaw is immature, which may hinder undertaking activities in the field of waste management planning. The study confirmed the suitability of the tested SS-OFMSW for organic recycling, especially using anaerobic digestion (AD), to which it is predisposed by water content, C/N, and biomethane potential (BMP). All tested food waste is characterized by a high yield of biogas in the range of 384–426 m
3 /Mg VS and an average share of methane in biogas at the level of 52–61%. Fertilizer properties, moisture, and its gas potential show little variability (CV ≤ 16%), which means that these data can be treated as stable data. The obtained results indicate the optimal direction for the collection and processing of SS-OFMSW based on post-consumer food waste in urbanized areas. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]- Published

This paper presents the development and testing of the AP-NURSE monitoring tool aimed to ease the everyday life of patients with Alzheimer's and Parkinson's diseases as well as those who take care of such patients. It summarises the activities carried out as part of the international Interreg CE niCE-life project. The team of STU designed, developed, constructed, and tested the AP-NURSE intelligent tool. The paper starts with demographic information on Slovakia. It highlights the fact that population aging is a significant issue, which requires measures to mitigate its consequences at local and European levels. The next part describes the final design of AP-NURSE Home and Care devices and their versions, including details on their hardware and software. A significant part of the paper deals with the testing of AP-NURSE in both laboratory and authentic environments. The laboratory testing was carried out directly at STU. The final testing in an authentic environment was conducted in two social and healthcare centres in Bratislava and in Warsaw. After the activities described in this paper, AP-NURSE reached TRL-6. The AP-NURSE Home platform developed based on the ESP microcontrollers demonstrated the best functionality and has the potential to be used in real practice. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

FUSION reactors ,TOKAMAKS ,ELECTRONIC measurements ,ELECTRONIC systems ,PLASMA physics ,LASER plasmas ,SOFT X rays - Abstract
The paper presents developments and significant improvements of the soft X-ray measurement system installed at the WEST tokamak. In the introduction, a brief discussion is carried out in the scope of energy shortage, fusion energy as a remedy, and the necessity of impurities monitoring in the scope of stable and long plasma discharge. This requires high-speed and accurate measurement systems due to the intense data streams that need to be processed online. For that reason, the SXR GEM FPGA-based system was designed by the Institute of Electronic Systems of the Warsaw University of Technology, the Institute of Plasma Physics and Laser Microfusion from Warsaw, and installed at the WEST tokamak in collaboration with the Institute for Magnetic Fusion Research, Commissariat à l'Énergie Atomique. It is the second-generation system, whereas the first was installed at JET tokamak. The article describes the architecture of the designed electronic part of the system. The paper presents an entirely new approach for the data concentration module implemented in FPGA. The main premise is to select only active data and send them chronologically to the embedded computer with high throughput. It is the essential component for long-term plasma operations, about 1 min, now carried out at WEST tokamak during the C3 campaign. The paper describes the laboratory tests under the exploitation of various radiation sources and the implementation of the solution and measurements during tokamak plasmas. Previous and current data acquisition methods are compared. The results show that implementing a new local trigger has significantly improved the system performance compared to the global trigger-based acquisition. The results are approximately 17 times better in the scope of performance and more than 20 times better in terms of data compression. The described design was successfully applied during the most recent 2023 experimental campaign at the WEST tokamak. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A recent research paper from the Warsaw University of Life Sciences highlights the potential threat of mycobacterial infections in cats to humans. The paper emphasizes that mycobacterial infections in cats, including tuberculosis and mycobacteriosis caused by non-tuberculous mycobacteria, should be considered in the diagnosis of clinical signs, particularly skin and ocular symptoms. The risk to humans depends on factors such as the species of mycobacteria, the level of contact between the cat and its owner, and the immune status of the owner. The study concludes that both M. bovis and non-tuberculous mycobacteria infections should be a concern, especially for high-risk groups. [Extracted from the article]

Featured Application: The studies presented in the article are useful for designing secondary vibration isolation. They also show that relying solely on indications from one method of assessing the impact of vibrations on people in buildings, a potential investor or later a manager may be exposed to complaints from residents of buildings located near transportation investments. This research paper delves into the nuanced effects of traffic-induced vibrations on human comfort and perception within residential and commercial buildings. By prioritizing the influence of vehicle types—including metro trains, trams, and cars—over their speed or mass, the study presents a novel perspective on addressing vibrational comfort. Conducted in the urban context of Warsaw's metro line construction, this investigation employs a rigorous methodology, utilizing both the Root Mean Square (RMS) and Vibration Dose Value (VDV) analytical methods to quantify vibrational impacts. The findings illuminate the distinct contributions of various transportation modes to the perceived vibrations, offering significant insights into the complex relationship between the Human Perception of Vibration Index (HPVI) and VDV values. It underscores the necessity of integrating a multifaceted consideration of vehicle type, operational dynamics, and urban infrastructure in the strategic planning and design of buildings. Such a holistic approach is essential for mitigating the adverse effects of transportation-induced vibrations, thereby enhancing the quality of life and well-being of urban inhabitants. In the last decade, many aerial photographic archives have started to be digitized for multiple purposes, including digital preservation and geoprocessing. This paper analyzes the effects of professional photogrammetric versus consumer-grade scanners on the processing of analog historical aerial photographs. An image block over Warsaw is considered, featuring 38 photographs acquired in 1986 (Wild RC10, Normal Aviogon II lens, 23 × 23 cm format) with a ground sampling distance (GSD) of 4 cm. Aerial triangulation (AT) and dense image matching (DIM) procedures are considered, analyzing how scanning modalities are important in the massive digitization of analog images for georeferencing and 3D product generation. The achieved results show how consumer-grade scanners, unlike more expensive photogrammetric scanners, do not possess adequate recording quality to ensure high accuracy and geometric precision for geoprocessing purposes. However, consumer-grade scanners can be used for time and cost-efficient applications where a partial loss of data quality is not critical. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

ECONOMETRIC models ,AKAIKE information criterion - Abstract
This special issue brings together five methodological contributions and responses to the 16th World Conference of the Spatial Econometric Association held in Warsaw, Poland, in June 2022. Each paper presents a new technique to provide better answers to the different stages of spatial econometric modelling. The first paper develops a method for determining principal components that capture both spatial and temporal dependence. The second paper provides five statistics to measure the extent to which spatial lags are collectively or individually significant in a spatial Durbin model. The third paper provides a roadmap to guide scholars through the specification search to explore spatial dependence underlying regions' resilience. The fourth paper employs the Akaike information criterion to determine the best performing k-nearest neighbour matrix in a spatial econometric model. The fifth paper explores a methodology to determine the best performing spatial weight matrix based on a set of covariates rather than geographical distance-based measures. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this paper we use administrative tabulations from occupation-based income tax (class tax) to estimate income inequality in the Duchy of Warsaw. We start off by estimating income inequality in the Department of Kalisz, and then use the decomposability of the Theil index to estimate national income inequality based on a sample of Theil indices corresponding to different settlement types. According to our results, income inequality in the Duchy was at a moderate level, although in the biggest cities it was relatively high. Income inequality at county level was positively correlated with the mean income of the county. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Immigrant‐run businesses are playing an increasingly important role in the Polish economy. This paper focuses on the patterns of entrepreneurship and ethnic economy employment among Chinese and Vietnamese immigrants residing in the Warsaw metropolitan area (WMA). It uses microdata from a survey of Vietnamese and Chinese residents of the WMA and employs logistic regression analysis in order to assess the factors that affect the odds of entrepreneurship and ethnic economy employment among them. Subsequently, the paper analyses the impact of entrepreneurship and ethnic economy employment on the earnings of Vietnamese and Chinese citizens living in the WMA. Empirical analysis demonstrates that Vietnamese and Chinese immigrants are not pushed to become entrepreneurs by an opportunity structure that blocks alternative options and enjoy significantly higher incomes than native‐born Polish citizens. The ethnic economy becomes a temporary adjustment mechanism for newly arrived migrants but is not lucrative for longer‐term residents of these two origins. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Increased computing power has made it possible to run simulations of the Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) numerical model in high spatial resolution. However, running high-resolution simulations requires a higher-detail mapping of landforms, land use, and land cover. Often, higher-resolution data have limited coverage or availability. This paper presents the feasibility of using CORINE Land Cover (CLC) land use and land cover data and alternative high-resolution global coverage land use/land cover (LULC) data from Copernicus Global Land Service Land Cover Map (CGLS-LC100) V2.0 in high-resolution WRF simulations (100 × 100 m). Global LULC data with a resolution of 100 m are particularly relevant for areas not covered by CLC. This paper presents the method developed by the authors for reclassifying land cover data from CGLS-LC100 to MODIS land use classes with defined parameters in the WRF model and describes the procedure for their implementation into the model. The obtained simulation results of the basic meteorological parameters from the WRF simulation using CLC, CGLS-LC100 and default geographical data from MODIS were compared to observations from 13 meteorological stations in the Warsaw area. The research has indicated noticeable changes in the forecasts of temperature, relative humidity wind speed, and direction after using higher-resolution LULC data. The verification results show a significant difference in weather predictions in terms of CLC and CGLS-LC100 LULC data implementation. Due to the fact that better results were obtained for CLC simulations than for CGLS-LC100, it is suggested that CLC data are first used for simulations in numerical weather prediction models and to use CGLS-LC100 data when the area is outside of CLC coverage. 1 pressures from dilatometer tests (DMT) and the effective (σ'vo ) and total (σvo ) vertical in situ overburden stress. Additionally, the main advantage of this paper is the proposal of use of a new chart to determine hydraulic permeability and soil fraction, based on DMT tests. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]- Published

Purpose: The main purpose of the survey was to provide assessment of selected marketing instruments used by exhibitors during a chosen trade event Design/methodology/approach: The survey was conducted during a trade event by the observation method and interviews with suppliers in the years 2021-2023. Secondary data was obtained from reports and domestic and foreign publications, among others, those registered in the Web of Science and Scopus Base. Findings: Promotions were found to be the weakest marketing instrument, whereas physical evidence was found to be the best prepared. Research limitations/implications: Relatively few scientific papers in the field of trade events were identified. Practical implications: The results can be used by producers as an indication for optimization of marketing activities. In the overall assessment promotion had the worst score as compared to other marketing instruments. The above result was largely affected by the score of supplemental promotion activities. It seems that at the relatively new market, ecological products especially: samples, tasting, or demonstrations are very important as they allow to get familiar with the products and break the barrier of distrust. Social implications: Effective marketing activity of exhibitors contributes to the promotion and increase of social awareness in relation to organic food. On average, more than 3000 visitors educated themselves in this area during each day of the fair. Originality/value: Lack of studies on trade events in reference to bio industry. RATE of return ,CAPITALIZATION rate ,ERROR correction (Information theory) ,OFFICE buildings - Abstract
This article is a continuation and extension of a previous study which, to the best of the author's knowledge, was the first scientific attempt to identify determinants of the yield rate in the Warsaw office market. The paper is based on the Gordon growth model. In this approach, the yield rate of buildings offering office space to let is a function of the risk-free interest rate, the risk premium and a constant rate of growth of generated cash flows. In the article, five different elements of the risk premium were identified (term structure, alternative investments', market (country) specific, monetary and local office market capacity risk premium). The Error Correction Model was formulated based on quarterly time series data from 2007Q1 to 2021Q2. Most investors in the office market in Poland are financial institutions representing foreign capital. Therefore, the innovation of the paper and its main goal was to define which factors play key roles in determining yield rates in the Warsaw office space market -- national or regional/international. However, the selected group of Polish determinants were indicated as having prevailing an impact on the yield rate in the Warsaw office market than the corresponding determinants from the European Monetary Union and the USA. Based on the model, the lead-lag, as well as asymmetric relations, were depicted. Moreover, the use of dummy variables checks, the Chow test and the Markov switching model indicated the presence of structural breaks and the existence of the two regimes in the model. The ongoing academic debate shows that urban community gardening has diverse governance models with differing roles for governmental organizations, NGOs and local communities. However, the perspective of community gardens governed by the involvement of institutions is rarely explored in academic research. This paper use a two-case study approach to explore the relations between community gardens and cultural institutions. We first identify factors that promote and impede the functioning of community gardens in partnership with cultural institutions. Next, we recognize initial governance models for selected case studies. Finally, we try to identify any changes in these governance structures, depending on the different stages of garden development and determine the reasons behind them. The results show these gardens are characterized by a changing governance model, shifting towards a top-down model, in which community members have no influence on strategic decisions. The involvement of cultural institutions in running community gardens is not assessed in a solely positive light. Although it facilitates their longevity, at the same time it may disempower their viability. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Following the introduction of a commercially available SD-OCT system in 2017, corneal epithelial mapping was incorporated into ophthalmology, particularly refractive surgery, as a valuable, highly diagnostic tool. In physiologically normal conditions, central epithelial thickness is 53-54 µm. Abnormal corneal epithelial thickness is observed in individuals with early keratoconus, in chronic contact lens wearers, and post corneal refractive surgery. In this paper, we present selected clinical cases in which corneal epithelial mapping performed with the Cirrus 5000 HD-OCT system (Zeiss) was used. The study group consisted of patients undergoing assessment of eligibility for refractive and cataract surgery or keratoconus treatment at the LASER Eye Microsurgery Centre in Warsaw. In the reported cases, corneal epithelial mapping contributed to modifying the diagnostic approach. In a patient with keratoconus, the characteristic 'doughnut pattern' was observed in the corneal epithelium. Identification of this symptom during the patient's preoperative evaluation for refractive surgery prevented the irreversible iatrogenic complication of ectasia. A patient who reported a decline in visual acuity following SMILE surgery was diagnosed with an atypical epithelial healing pattern. The patient was advised to continue the prescribed treatment and was subjected to ongoing monitoring. At the follow-up visit, the patient reported an improvement in her visual acuity. A subsequent OCT examination showed normal pattern of epithelial distribution. Epithelial thickness can be a valuable parameter in the assessment of patient eligibility for refractive surgery. In addition, it may help determine the flap size and the depth of laser or keratome incision. This, in turn, contributes to optimal postoperative refractive outcomes. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The paper is a study of risk assessment posed by trees in selected urban woodlands (urban forests) of Warsaw. Two groups of trees were analysed and compared: exhibiting signs of maturity and ageing (hollow-bearing trees with open or hidden cavities and/or caries) and with no signs of decay. 373 individual trees growing near routes frequently or continuously used for recreational purposes were examined using Roloff's vitality classification, and tree risk assessment method, complemented by instrumental studies: a resistance resistograph, pulling tests, and sonic tomography (SoT). The collected data was analysed using the Chi-square test. The results indicate that it is not possible to conclude unequivocally that the presence of hollows in aged trees significantly increases the risk of falling. According to the safety factor results from the SoT and pulling tests, no correlation was demonstrated between the presence of hollow trees and an increase in risk class. The highest proportion of hollow trees (89.42%) was in the low risk group for trunk fracture and uprooting. The results also indicate the coherence of the diagnostic methods to be necessary for providing sufficient information to assess the statics and, ultimately, as our study showed, the protection of hollow trees. The article proposes the notion of a "spectacle of repair," a carefully calibrated social technology of green governance aimed at managing the environmental degradation through control over images in Warsaw, Poland. Using case studies Million Trees for Warsaw project and a candidacy for the Green Capital of Europe and building on political ecology literature that addresses the rise of new opportunities for capitalist expansion through restoration activity, this article claims that the production of the green policy sphere allows for a creation of an array of possible "green" actions in the city that are presented as interchangeable and effectively commensurable. As the municipality heavily invests in greenery and a removal of visible signs of messiness and dirt in the city, the depoliticized spectacle of a clean and green urban space focuses on creating an image of the authorities actively combating the pollution as well as working towards making Warsaw more "livable." At the same time, the two major roots of pollution found in ever-increasing car traffic and old coal-heating systems remain insufficiently addressed amid a lack of political will. The paper argues that mitigation strategy of the city hall thus heavily relies on a management of visibilities; attempting to alleviate the citizens' pressure to tackle the largely invisible air pollution by delivering the tidy greenery desired by the urban elites, keeping the city fit for competing in the global neoliberal economy. Lott–Sturm–Villani theory of curvature on geodesic spaces has been extended to discrete graph spaces by C. Léonard by replacing W 2 -Wasserstein geodesics by Schrödinger bridges in the definition of entropic curvature (Léonard in Discrete Contin Dyn Syst A 34(4):1533–1574, 2014; Ann Probab 44(3):1864–1915, 2016; in: Gigli N (ed) Measure theory in non-smooth spaces. Sciendo Migration,Warsaw, pp 194–242, 2017). As a remarkable fact, as a temperature parameter goes to zero, these Schrödinger bridges are supported by geodesics of the space. We analyse this property on discrete graphs to reach entropic curvature on discrete spaces. Our approach provides lower bounds for the entropic curvature for several examples of graph spaces: the lattice Z n endowed with the counting measure, the discrete cube endowed with product probability measures, the circle, the complete graph, the Bernoulli–Laplace model. Our general results also apply to a large class of graphs which are not specifically studied in this paper. As opposed to Erbar–Maas results on graphs (Erbar and Maas in Arch Ration Mech Anal 206(3):997–1038, 2012; Discrete Contin Dyn Syst A 34(4):1355–1374, 2014; Maas in J Funct Anal 261(8):2250–2292, 2011), entropic curvature results of this paper imply new Prékopa–Leindler type of inequalities on discrete spaces, and new transport-entropy inequalities related to refined concentration properties for the graphs mentioned above. For example on the discrete hypercube { 0 , 1 } n and for the Bernoulli Laplace model, a new W 2 - W 1 transport-entropy inequality is reached, that can not be derived by usual induction arguments over the dimension n. As a surprising fact, our method also gives improvements of weak transport-entropy inequalities (see Gozlan et al. in J Funct Anal 273(11):3327–3405, 2017) associated to the so-called convex-hull method by Talagrand (Publ Math l'Inst Hautes Etudes Sci 81(1):73–205, 1995). The aim of this study is to extract impervious surfaces and show their spatial distribution, using different machine learning algorithms. For this purpose, geoprocessing and remote sensing techniques were used and three classification methods for digital images were compared, namely Support Vector Machines (SVM), Maximum Likelihood (ML) and Random Trees (RT) classifiers. The study area is one of the most prestigious and the largest housing estates in Warsaw (Poland), the Fort Bema housing complex, which is also an exemplary model for hydrological solutions. The study was prepared on the Geographic Information System platform (GIS) using aerial optical images, orthorectified and thus provided with a suitable coordinate system. The use of these data is therefore supported by the accuracy of the resulting infrared channel product with a pixel size of 0.25 m, making the results much more accurate compared to satellite imagery. The results of the SVM, ML and RT classifiers were compared using the confusion matrix, accuracy (Root Mean Square Error /RMSE/) and kappa index. This showed that the three algorithms were able to successfully discriminate between targets. Overall, the three classifiers had errors, but specifically for impervious surfaces, the highest accuracy was achieved with the SVM classifier (the highest percentage of overall accuracy), followed by ML and RT with 91.51%, 91.35% and 84.52% of the results, respectively. A comparison of the visual results and the confusion matrix shows that although visually the RT method appears to be the most detailed classification into pervious and impervious surfaces, the results were not always correct, e.g., water/shadow was detected as an impervious surface. The NDVI index was also mapped for the same spatial study area and its application in the evaluation of pervious surfaces was explained. The results obtained with the GIS platform, presented in this paper, provide a better understanding of how these advanced classifiers work, which in turn can provide insightful guidance for their selection and combination in real-world applications. The paper also provides an overview of the main works/studies dealing with impervious surface mapping, with different methods for their assessment (including the use of conventional remote sensing, NDVI, multisensory and cross-source data, 'social sensing' and classification methods such as SVM, ML and RT), as well as an overview of the research results. The following paper is devoted to research on the types of forms of skyscrapers built in Warsaw from 1989 to 2022. The research focuses on defining the architectural typology of such forms as elements of the image of the city. The research was carried out in the following stages: defining the character of international examples of skyscrapers, research on types of forms of high-rise buildings realized in Warsaw and their formal classification, determination of typological features of twenty-four high-rise buildings under study, and their changes over time. The characteristic elements of the image of the city and urban composition related to the examined buildings were determined. As a result of the research, it was determined that the most common types of forms found in the study group were free forms—41.6%, polygonal forms—25%, and obelisk forms—20.8%. In individual cases, there are tapered, aerodynamic, and regional forms. The research showed a trend in the latest projects, dating back to the last five years, consisting of an increase in the number of buildings constructed, an increase their scale, a lowering of their slenderness, and a tendency to implement polygonal forms more often than free forms. High-rise buildings are landmarks in the urban composition and the image of Warsaw. Most often, they designate paths and nodes with which they are associated. The types of forms of high-rise buildings in Warsaw vary; there is no uniform type of form of high-rise building implemented in the period. For this reason, the research should be updated and carried out using the methodology presented in the paper. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Accurate registration of 3D scans is crucial in creating precise and detailed 3D models for various applications in cultural heritage. The dataset used in this study comprised numerous point clouds collected from different rooms in the Museum of King Jan III's Palace in Warsaw using a structured light scanner. Point clouds from three relatively small rooms at Wilanow Palace: The King's Chinese Cabinet, The King's Wardrobe, and The Queen's Antecabinet exhibit intricate geometric and decorative surfaces with diverse colour and reflective properties. As a result, creating a high-resolution full 3D model require a complex and time-consuming registration process. This process often consists of several steps: data preparation, registering point clouds, final relaxation, and evaluation of the resulting model. Registering two-point clouds is the most fundamental part of this process; therefore, an effective registration workflow capable of precisely registering two-point clouds representing various cultural heritage interiors is proposed in this paper. Fast Adaptive Multimodal Feature Registration (FAMFR) workflow is based on two different handcrafted features, utilising the colour and shape of the object to accurately register point clouds with extensive surface geometry details or geometrically deficient but with rich colour decorations. Furthermore, this work emphasises the challenges associated with high-resolution point clouds registration, providing an overview of various registration techniques ranging from feature-based classic approaches to new ones based on deep learning. A comparison shows that the algorithm explicitly created for this data achieved much better results than traditional feature-based or deep learning methods by at least 35%. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objective: To present signs and symptoms and clinical course in cystic fibrosis patients with false-negative newborn screening (CF NBS). Materials and methods: All children presented in this paper were covered by CF NBS. The group of 1.869.246 newborns was screened in the Institute of Mother and Child in Warsaw within a period of 01.01.1999 - 31.05.2019. Screening protocols evolved over time from IRT/IRT to IRT/DNA/EGA. Results: The authors identified 11 patients with false-negative NBS, in whom CF was diagnosed based on clinical symptoms or the examination of siblings with positive CF NBS. In the study group, the diagnosis was made significantly later in comparison to positive CF NBS patients ranging from 2 months to 15 years of age. CF NBS strategy does not significantly affect the sensitivity of the screening. Conclusion: In the presence of clinical symptoms, additional diagnostics must be implemented, in spite of the negative screening results. At first, the sweat test should be conducted, followed by a DNA analysis of the most common mutations in the given population. The diagnostic process requires searching for CFTR mutations not typically associated with a high chloride concentration in sweat. Repetition of sweat chloride concentration enables the diagnosis in children whose initial chloride values in sweat are borderline, and no CF-causing mutations are detected. In strong clinical indications, the extension of DNA analysis (EGA) is recommended in order to identify rare CF variants. In children with meconium ileus, genetic analysis is mandatory. An electric turnout heating (ETH) system is an essential technical and economic issue. Uninterrupted operation of the turnouts is crucial to maintaining railway transport safety. The classic heating system is characterized by high energy consumption. The usage of it is extremely expensive, so the need to optimize the current system becomes more and more critical. At the same time, the progress in the contactless heating method has become a promising alternative. The paper presents the results of tests performed for electric turnout heating systems for two types of heaters. In the first place, the analysis of heat distribution was performed using the ANSYS Fluent v.16. The temperature fields in the turnout models filled with a model of semi-melting snow were analyzed. Thanks to cooperation with the Railway Institute in Warsaw the second stage of the research was possible to be completed. In this part, the models were implemented in the real world using the 49E1 railway turnout. The numerical solutions were validated by the experiments. The verification showed a high level of agreement among the results. The obtained results indicate the need for further tests of heating systems, to validate an optimal method of turnout heating. It was found that in the classic ETH, the working space area consumes a tremendous amount of energy. To ensure a higher efficiency of the heating process, the contactless heater is proposed as an alternative. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This article examines the sources of foreign policy decisions made by Polish leaders in the period between 1918 and 1921. Reappearing on the map of Europe after more than a century of absence, Warsaw controlled a territory devastated by war, formerly owned by three different empires, in need of a unified administration. Despite a clear incentive to aspire to a stable security environment, Poland engaged in conflicts with most of its neighbors. Developing a case study in foreign policy analysis, this paper reveals how ideological motives prevailed in the minds of the rulers formulating Warsaw's approach to external affairs, thus involving the Second Republic in hostilities for the first three years of its existence.
